as the doctor diagnosed with ebola in new york. that doctor now in a more serious stage of his illness. so many eyes are on this picture right here. the nurse in mandatory quarantine in new jersey who does not have ebola. she's saying her human rights have been violated. >> kaci hickox. at university hospital in newark, new jersey. we have full team coverage this morning starting with linsey davis at the hospital. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. we're just learning that nurse kaci hickox will be released today and heading back to maine. she tested negative from ebola on friday and remained symptom-free ever since. >> the situation is a little bit out of control. >> reporter: overnight, kaci's boyfriend telling us that the tent is let o set up in the parking lot of new arc new jersey's hospital parking lot, it's unheated, with no shower, and only a box for a toilet. she does have a cell phone, which she used sunday for this interview with cnn.

calling her treatment inhumane. >> i feel like my basic human rights have been violated. >> reporter: she had been treating ebola patients in sierra leone. when she landed newark airport friday, officials said she had a fever, something hickox deanywayed. saying she was worn out, from hours of being detained, with only a protein bar to eat. chris christie, the new jersey governor, continued to defend the decision. >> i'm sorry that she's uncomfortable. the fact is i have the people of new jersey as my first and foremost responsibility to protect their public health. >> reporter: overnight, christie and new york governor andrew cuomo reiterating their stance that only health workers who do not have symptoms can self-quarantine at home. something hickox's boyfriend said she planned to do when she returned to their home in maine. >> my nearest neighbor is 500 meters away. and there's no reason to run into anyone. nothing was going to happen. >> reporter: her attorney, seen

here talking to his client through a tent window, says he plans to file a federal lawsuit if she's not released soon. >> the medical people that we have talked to will be recommending that there's no reason medically to keep her quarantined. >> reporter: according to doctors without borders, 20 health care workers are scheduled to return to the states from west africa in the next four weeks. with florida, illinois, new jersey, and new york enforcing mandatory quarantine orders, the question remain, will those workers get the same treatment hickox is now enduring in that tent. >> over the last several months, since i got myself involved in this outbreak and i reflect back on concerns and fears that i have had, it's interesting that i'm more much anxious about returning to the united states than i ever was about treating patients with ebola here. >> reporter: when asked about >> reporter: we're also learning more about a 5-year-old boy who remains in isolation and is

tested for ebola. we're expected to have the results within the next 12 hours. robin? >> he could be released later today. thank you very much. dr. richard besser is here. this is such a hot topic. these restrictions. what this nurse is facing. your take? >> i think it's unnecessary. i've been texting with kaci. there have been hundreds of health care workers who have gone and taken care of patients. and there's never been one, not one, who spread it to anyone when they returned. that's because they know how to take their temperature. i worry this will discourage people from going over there to work to knock out ebola. that's what will make it safer here. we need these people to do this work. >> you say that. people in new york city see the bowling alley where the doctor was, shut down. the meatball shop where he was, shut down. and people are saying, if there's no fear, why are these steps being taken? >> i think that's a good question. they are mixed messages. you can't say dr. spencer posed no risk and treat every place

he's been to like it's risky. because it wasn't risky. you hear the politicians saying we're doing this out of an abundance of caution, when do you that, you notify hundreds of people on an airplane, or a cruise ship, or meatball shop, it scares people. it doesn't reassure them because those settings were not risky and you have to treat them that way. >> politicians and medical experts are not on the same page at all. the cdc is now, and constantly changing the guidelines. they're saying there will be daily monitoring of anyone coming back from west africa. >> i think this is a middle ground. it will reassure people to know that every day, these people will be in touch with someone from public health, checking their temperature. if they have an elevated temperature, they can be taken in and tested and evaluated. that way, again, they can't spread it at that point. it will keep people safe. hopefully, they'll sleep better. >> i know. there's still so many question and you can understand the public being concerned. you'll be on twitter, dr. richard besser, taking questions right now. all right. let's take this to the white house. president obama meeting with his

ebola team yesterday as they consider new guidelines for health care workers from returning from west africa. abc's jon karl is at the white house. the president is concerned about these quarantines. >> reporter: they're concerned. they see them as unnecessary, not based in the science. the real fear is what you heard from dr. besser. they will discourage health care workers from going to west africa, where they're desperately needed. and the key to fighting this disease, the view from the white house, is fighting it in west africa. getting control of the epidemic there. and, jon, on a different note, on politic, you had a revealing interview with jeb bush's son, george p., over the weekend. it showed the bush family closing ranks around a possible presidential run. >> reporter: no question. george p. bush says he believes it is more likely than not that his father, jeb bush, will run for president. i also spoke to a bush family friend over the weekend, who recently visited with george herbert walk irbush, the 41st president, he said he's very

active in encouraging his son to run. it looks like his family is fully on board. we haven't heard from the man himself. i'm told that will happen after the midterm elections. >> barbara bush reported to be concerned but will keep it quiet. >> reporter: the one skeptic in the family. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. all right, george. now to the red hot river of lava flowing on hawaii's big island. threatening one small town. dozens of families on high alert, ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. the red cross is opening a shelter to help them. clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: this morning, the small town of pahoa is feeling the heat. officials on the big island of hawaii believe it is only matter of time. lava close enough that residents can see the 2,000-degree glow from their houses at night. those in the direct path, about 50 families, must be ready to flee as early as tomorrow. >> we have lived here all our lives. it will be very difficult.

>> reporter: this lava erupted from the kilauea volcano. back in june, flowing downhill about 12 miles. now, moving ten yards per hour. and it's less than half a mile from pahoa. we were there a few days ago as the lava closed in. standing here is extremely hot. almost like standing inside an oven. where will the lava go? experts predict it will take one of these paths, homes, and the main highway through town would be lost. a slow-motion disaster that now seems inevitable. for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. breaking news on the school shooting in washington state. a second victim has died. 14-year-old gia soriano. we're learning more about the hero teacher that kept this from becoming a much bigger tragedy. abc's neal karlinsky has the story. >> reporter: first year social studies teacher and soccer enthusiast megan silberberger. hailed as a hero this morning. >> for some reason, her instinct

was to run into the cafeteria. >> reporter: possibly preventing more victims after she confronted alleged 16-year-old shooter. jalen fryberg in the cafeteria as he attempted to reload his gun. she grabbed fryberg's arm in a two-second struggle before fryberg turned the gun on himself. she has asked for privacy. but issued a statement that she was in an office next to the cafeteria and heard shots. she ran in and confronted the shooter until security arrived. overnight, 14-year-old gia soriano died of her injuries. the second victim to pass away since friday, when fryberg, who had recently been crowned homecoming prince, allegedly pulled the gun out of a black bag in the cafeteria and methodically shot five of his best friends in what may have been a dispute over a girl. >> our hearts and prayers go out to the entire soriano family. they will never heal from this. >> reporter: two are still in the hospital fighting for their lives this morning as hundreds gathered at the school for a

community meeting. for "good morning america," neal karlinski, abc news, marysville, washington. >> such a sad situation there. now to amy with today's other top stories. >> good morning, george, good morning, everyone. we begin with great news for your morning commute. gas prices are plummeting. national average, now 3:04 a gallon down 18 cents in two weeks. thanks to falling oil prices. new information on the attack on the canadian parliament last week. overnight, police revealed the gunman, michael zehaf-bibeau, recorded a video before the attack. police are not releasing that video yet. they say it proves that the rampage was planned and driven by the gunman's ideological and political motives. one of the top rising stars in major league baseball has and the oh oscar pistorius will appeal his case.

but he could be out in ten months. one of the top rising stars in major league baseball has been killed in a car crash. oscar taveras was just 22 years old. he had just finished his rookie season with the cardinals. his girlfriend also died in the crash in the dominican republic. witnesses say speed was a factor. and some dramatic video from virginia, a man trapped in a burning car, three people rushed in to help him. one grabbed a hammer, breaks the sunroof, so they can pull him out of the flames. listen to how it all unfolded. >> are you by yourself? >> is anybody else in there? anybody else in there? >> watch his feet! >> wow. there was not a moment to spare. a few seconds later, the fire would have made it impossible for the rescuers to reach him. the driver is recovering from his injuries. a big scare in the air as this plane was coming in for a landing in heavy winds. you see the plane rocking back and forth just seconds away from the runway. this is on the island of madeira off portugal. the pilots pull it off. look at that. touching down safely. you know how you get that big applause?

and underage drinking in january. a violation of ncaa recruiting rules. tom re oeder, blue the scandal wide open. >> these 14 recruits and 20 cadet escorts were handed $40 apiece, put on a bus, and sent to the palisades mall. everybody ordered a bunch of beer with the money from the football team. >> reporter: west point never made the incident public, but it did self-report the recruiting violations to the ncaa and says, it's punished the 20 cadets involved, including the starting quarterback, angel santiago. >> this is not like any college you would see in the ncaa. this is a military academy. these cadets are members of the military. they're on the payroll. every single one of these athletes is paid. they also agree to live under the uniform code of military justice. underage drinking is a crime in the military. >> reporter: the controversy doesn't end there. "the gazette" claims to have

obtained a west point internal report, a portion of which they shared with us. including a separate incident in february in which a lot colonel lieutenant /* asked female athletes to be dinner dates for recruits, telling at least one cadet, quote, we want recruits to see that there are pretty girls that go here and not just masculine women who attend west point. west point's superintendent issued a statement saying at no time did west point arrange a dinner date with female cadets. according to west point, two officers and coaches have been reprimanded. as for the players, they're expected to be eligible to play the big game this weekend against air force. >> some story. >> sure is. what a game last night with the world series. >> what a game, robin. wow. we turn to the world series. the giants are now one win away from winning it all after beating the royals last night. but the most talked about moment from the game happened before

leave until thursday. we begin with the latest on the retrial of john goodman for dui manslaughter. critical testimony this weekend focused on his bentley. matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: a $200,000 bentley. front and center in the retrial of multimillionaire polo mogul john goodman. >> pretty car. >> it's a very nice car. >> reporter: he's charged with dui manslaughter after crashing into 23-year-old scott wilson's hyundai in 2010, plowing it into a canal where the engineering graduate drowned. >> i went to grab my gear shift. that's the last thing i remember. >> reporter: he claims he didn't crash because he was drunk but because his luxury car malfunctioned, preventing him from braking popperly. >> you believe that your bentley malfunctioned that night?

what is this case going to turn on? >> it's less about the bentley and more about was he drunk? if he was drunk, it is hard to see how -- >> he says he got drunk after the accident. >> he says he wept to this man cave. hard to cruise that term without smiling. he went to an empty home of a friend of his and chugged alcohol after the crash. that's hi he had such a high blood alcohol number. he's not disputing that he was drunk when they took his blood alcohol. he's saying the only run i was drunk was because i drank after the crash, not before it. that, to me, becomes the key question. >> it appears he's come up for the retrial with a more plausible story. >> a little bit. a little bit of a different count. on the first trial, they focused on the idea that the bentley lurched forward. this time, they're saying it was more an issue with the brakes.

i think it's a great choice, l'oreal, for whatever that's worth. puppies with a serious purpose. the nonprofit group, the canine war -- warrior canine connection held the graduation ceremony in maryland over the weekend. just love this group. they celebrate the placement of six more dogs into the work force, ready to serve their duty, helping injured combat veterans. the class of 2014, all of them golden retrievers and labs, will assist their human partners, many of them suffer from ptsd. and would not be able to leave the house if it were not for their dog. they help others that have lost a limb, fetch medicines for them, assist in daily life. the other thing is a potential career path for the veterans who will become service dog trainers. congratulations to the veterans and to the dogs. >> cannot say enough about that program.

and the problem is that teens want to feel included. this is a time in their life where they want to feel like they're doing something that their peers approve of. and not everybody can get into this club, of course. and we know that they feel like a slap in the face if they're not getting enough likes. >> what are your suggestions? we showed that clip, that commercial, and amy and george both chiming in that their daughters are part of that, wanting to be that. what are your suggestions to parents? >> when i'm speaking to teens and parents, i talk to them about breaking that like habit. so find out, is your teen posting photos just to get likes? because if they are, it's a really slippery slope. it's a self-esteem trap. make sure your child is out there getting involved, sports, drama clubs, meaningful things where they can create meaningful goals.
