we'll sort through it all with the nation's top disease expert. >> that is just ahead. but right to the developing story out of hawaii. the red-hot lava threatening to wipe out a town on the big island. some families evacuating as the flow closes in on homes and key roads. and rob marciano was just on the front lines in pahoa, hawaii. good morning, rob. >> reporter: robin, look at this laf have flow behind me. it just broke out from underneath what was crusted over lava. we're still three miles from the lava front. this is blistering hot, taking over this street. unimaginable if this was coming through your neighborhood. blistering hot and unstoppable. this morning, residents fleeing the scenic town of pahoa, hawaii, powerless to stop the river of lava creeping towards their homes. >> we don't know what we're going to do. i mean, it's -- it's really scary. >> reporter: this is the aerial view as the lava burns its way through the land. the trail of lava from the

kilauea volcano, it's traveled 12 miles since it began erupting in june. at times, speeding up erratically. even worse, the flow has now fanned out, covering more ground. and follow the steepest route, pahoa is right there in the literal hot zone. officials say there is no way to stop the lava, but they're working to protect power poles from burning and create detours in case the main road is hit, which would cut off access for thousands. structures can catch fire being near the 2,000-degree hot lava. it's not the first time the island was hit by one of the world's most active volcanos. in the '90s, more than 200 homes were destroyed from the lava flow. now residents are bracing for the worst hoping it's not a repeat of the past. the homes threatened are just a few miles downstream from us. and it's imminent that those houses are likely to go up like this tree is. back to you guys. we gotta get out of here. >> i bet you do. thanks, rob. the latest on the ebola

scare. nurse kaci hickox back in maine, released from the mandatory quarantine in new jersey after showing no symptoms of the deadly disease. and overnight, the cdc issuing new guidelines for treating health care workers. linzie janis is in fort kent. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. kaci hickox back in her home state, and despite twice testing negative for ebola, she will be required to be quarantined for roughly another 17 days. during that time, she'll be actively monitored by health officials. this morning, kaci hickox is back in maine where she can finally swap the tent she was quarantined in in a new jersey hospital parking lot for her own bed. the nurse who says she was treated like a criminal when she returned to the u.s. after treating ebola patients in sierra leone, leaving the hospital monday in an suv provided by doctors without borders.

governor chris christie insisting the release not a change in the state's policy. >> i didn't reverse the decision. why are you saying i reversed a decision? if she was continuing to be ill, he would have to stay. >> reporter: and the lawyer talking to his client through a plastic window in the tent with no heating, no shower, and a box for a toilet. telling abc news overnight she may still sue the state of new jersey. >> her civil rights were violated. in a minimum, she can bring an action for damages. but i think her goal is to try to revise the current policies with regard to mandatory quarantine. >> reporter: hickox will now continue her quarantine at an undisclosed location. maine among nine states that announced some type of quarantine above and beyond federal guidelines. in fact, the cdc revised guidelines overnight to eliminate the word quarantine altogether. recommending restricted travel and public activity for those at

highest risk, plus active monitoring by public health officials. an organization not following the cdc guidelines, the u.s. army, placing a two-star general and a dozen other soldiers in controlled monitoring isolation in italy after they returned from liberia. the army says they will remain there for 21 days despite the fact they've shown no signs of the illness. the thought of kaci hickox being back in this small town near the border with canada has many people here concerned, particularly at the university where her boyfriend, ted wilbur, is a nursing student. an official at that college telling a local newspaper that if wilbur has direct contact with hickox during her quarantine, then he would not be allowed back on campus until he, too, has been cleared of any health risk. george? >> thank you, linzie. for more, we are joined by dr. anthony fauci from the national institute of health. thank you for joining us.

you have the federal government recommending one course of action, states taking another, the military taking another. isn't this kind of confusion a recipe for panic? >> i don't think so, george. what it is, the federal what it is, the federal government, the cdc, is setting a certain level, a level beneath which you don't want to go. and it's based on solid science. the states always have the option of being a little bit more stringent than the lower level of recommendation. and in some cases, they're doing that. there will be states that might want to do more. but the cdc and the government feels what we're putting forth are things based on solid science. >> that would suggest that what the military is doing and the states are doing is not based on the science. when you have the military going further than the federal government is recommending, who is the public supposed to trust? >> well, the military is doing that. they can and are going more than you absolutely need to. the military culture and the ability to put someone in the barracks.

the fact that people can be and are confined to barracks in a very comfortable way is a different, really, situation than the culture of the civilian population. >> but was it a mistake for the state of new jersey to quarantine kaci hickox, was that based on science? >> george, i don't want to use the word mistake. because i think when people do things, the governors of new york, the governor of new jersey, they're doing it in good faith to try to do what they feel is the best for their constituents. we're trying to set the bar based on scientific data. but that's not to criticize or put down a decision that an official might make wanting to go the extra mile. that's just judgment on their part. >> i was struck by something governor chris christie has said. he's said he had no contact with the administration. how is that possible? >> i can't explain that, george. that's not the level that i work at. but i can tell you that the cdc and the administration is reaching out very actively to

the state and local health officials. >> finally, you know there's so much anxiety out there. what's the most important thing you can do right now to reassure americans? >> what we can do is reassure the americans of what the facts are over and over again. we understand the fear. this virus is not spread by anything other than direct contact with the body fluids of someone who is sick. if you look at what's gone on in the united states, the only two cases that we've had that were infected in this country were two brave nurses taking care of a very sick person. >> dr. fauci, thank you very much for your time this morning. >> good to be with you. >> and we've just learned that the second brave nurse, amber vinson, of course, from dallas, is being released from emory university hospital this morning. she is ebola-free. >> great news. news that her family and fiance were waiting to hear.

now to the war on isis and a shocking new propaganda video. it shows a british hostage in the middle of a syrian city, on top of a building, essentially taunting the u.s., that's been bombing the terror group in that city for weeks. martha raddatz has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the video is clearly an effort to try to humiliate the u.s. by making this hostage spout isis propaganda in a critical syrian city that the u.s. has been trying to save. the u.s. has conducted more than 170 air strikes in kobani alone, trying to desperately to keep it out of the hands of isis. but in this new video, which has not been authenticated, isis attempts to show that despite the bombings, the reconnaissance flights, it can place this hostage british journalist, john cantlie, on a rooftop, in broad daylight, surrounded by cameras. >> hello, i'm john cantlie, and today we're in the city of kobani.

on the syrian-turkish border. >> reporter: in the video, isis has cantlie saying that isis is about to overtake the entire city. the video even purports to show aerial footage of kobani taken from an isis drone, pinpointing the location where cantlie was videotaped. and if you compare the video and the aerial video with independent satellite views, you can see the same silver silos in the background. the same cluster of trees behind cantlie. and because of the references that he makes in the tape to particular air drops and statements by u.s. officials -- >> good old john kerry. >> reporter: -- it was likely shot just about a week ago or even less. of course, in terms of finding cantlie and other hostages, a week-old tape might as well be a month old. there are lots of clues. but isis has almost certainly moved cantlie far from that spot

by now. george? politics now. midterm elections just one week away. stakes are high. and republicans trying to take back congress. as americans head to the poll, they're in a sour mood. more than two-thirds of americans think we're on the wrong track. abc's jon karl is at the white house. the country down on washington, and down on president obama. >> reporter: yeah, and the problems for democrats, george, go beyond a low presidential approval rating. president obama came into office seeking to restore people's faith in government to make their lives better. but look at our poll. a full 60% say they have little or no trust in the federal government to do what's right. and even worse for democrats, 63% say that the ability of government to deal with people's problems has worsened since president obama has been in office. now, will voters blame both sides for this, george? a far larger percentage blame the white house and democrats in congress than republicans. >> and that's one of the things giving republicans an edge in the fight for the senate.

they need to take six seats to get control. >> reporter: and nate silver of espn's five thirty-eight has crunched the numbers. and he says that republicans have a 63% chance of winning the control of the senate. but george, i have to tell you, in virtually all of the top races we have been tracking, this is very close. these races are all within the margin of error. it's going to be a very interesting election night. >> it sure is. jon, thanks very much. now to amy and the other top stories. >> all right, george. good morning. good morning, everyone. we begin with a major development with the highway guardrails blamed for slicing through cars and causing serious injuries and deaths in crashes. virginia is now planning to remove the guardrails from its highways, becoming the first state to do so. and texas is now the 14th state to stop buying the guardrails. the manufacturer, trinity industries, was recently ordered to pay $175 million for failing to tell the government about a design change that may prevent the rails from working properly. new revelations about

another government surveillance program. the postal service says it has approved nearly 50,000 requests in the last year to monitor the mail of ordinary americans for criminal and national security investigations. "the new york times" say the program is more extensive than previously disclosed and oversight is lacking. the post office insists it only records what's on the outside of envelopes, not what's on the inside. police north of seattle say the teenager who opened fire on friday if his high school has texted his friends and relatives to lure them to lunch before killing two of them and injuring three others. they say the murder weapon was purchased legally by one of jaylen fryberg's relatives. there was word that fryberg may have been upset over a girl. a dramatic scene off south florida. 11 people believed to be cuban

his stepson, jarod, and friends, just before the 53-year-old's first broncos game. >> his son up here with him. his first game. he was in a good mood. he was happy. >> reporter: but at halftime, they were separate when had jarod went to the bathroom. when he came back, his stepfather was gone. >> we have been searching the stadium, the hospitals. going all over the place. >> reporter: kittleman is a rancher who hails from kremmling. friends say he's more comfortable at home on the range than in the big city. he carried $50 in cash and left the rest at home. >> positive, real, simple man. he lives his life. has his family and friends and close-knit group. keeps in touch. >> reporter: the stadium is sorting through hours of surveillance footage for clues, asking any fans who may have seen kitterman to come forward. denver police say a stadium employee was the last to see him sometime during the third quarter. but for now there's no evidence to suggest any crime.

"the palm beach post" reporting an alleged arrest for jury tampering monday. sources saying a individual allegedly sent a text to

goodman's friend, chris campson, seen here testifying last week, offering to sway a jury member in exchange for cash. it sparked an investigation. it's the latest jury drama to rock the high-profile retrial of the multimillionaire whose first conviction and 16-year instance was thrown out due to juror misconduct. inside the courtroom on monday, the defense using closing arguments to make an impassioned final push for goodman's freedom. >> a tragic, terrible accident occurred. but there were no crimes committed by mr. goodman. >> reporter: arguing that goodman, who has pleaded not guilty, wasn't drunk when he t-boned 23-year-old scott wilson's car into a canal. but that the brakes on his $200,000 bentley failed. and the defense also insisting he only left the scene because he was disoriented. >> he wasn't thinking about the canal. >> reporter: prosecutors striking back. >> if he had stayed at the

scene, perhaps, miracle of miracles, scott wilson might be alive today. >> reporter: saying goodman was drunk from a night of partying at an exclusive club. and he was clearly intoxicated when had he made this 911 call nearly an hour after the crash. >> i stopped and pulled out in front and i didn't see a car and -- where am i? >> reporter: his team claims he was drunk after the accident and wouldn't have called 911 if he had something to hide. >> there was no encouragement or pleading to get john goodman to call 911. >> reporter: for "good morning america," tom llamas, abc news, new york. >> all right, tom, thank you. now the latest on the high profile murder trial in pittsburgh, a profeser accused of killing his wife by lacing her drink with cyanide and telling her it was a fertility treatment. playing the dramatic 911 call when she collapsed. ryan smith has the story.

>> please, please, please, i think my wife is having a stroke. >> reporter: this morning prosecutors making their case against the man heard in this dramatic 911 call, renowned university of pittsburgh researcher dr. robert ferrante, accused of murdering his wife, dr. autumn klein, with a cyanide-laced energy drink. >> what makes you think she's having a stroke? >> she's just staring and can't answer. >> reporter: on monday, police detectives testifying they found at least one container of the poisonous drug in his lab. the same drug prosecutors say he bought just two days before his wife's collapse. >> he hasn't reacted at all. through the course of the trial. we've seen no emotion out of him. >> reporter: prosecutors believe the couple considered having a second child, and that the 66-year-old ferrante told his 41-year-old wife to drink the tainted cocktail, saying it helped with fertility. >> my wife was trying to get pregnant again. so there's all these -- >> getting injections? >> all kinds of drugs, yes. all kinds of drugs.

>> reporter: dr. klein was a prominent neurologist, her work shown in this video. this newly released surveillance video showing her leaving her job. 30 minutes later, collapsing at home. the motive? prosecutors say ferrante didn't really want to have more kids and suspected his wife was having an affair. he has pleaded not guilty. his defense arguing there's no proof he gave his wife a lethal cocktail. the cause of her death, they say, either suicide or a mystery. police seized his laptop which showed google searches, one asking how to remove toxins from flood. and another asking how the remove a google search history. if convicted, he could face life in prison. >> thanks so much. and again with the weather. chicago and now this. >> chicago was bikini weather. then they chill out today. look at that steamboat ski and resort in colorado. makes snow look good. and so does the video.

and health news now. a new study revealing the best way to treat coughs in young children. cough medicine can be dangerous for kids under 4. but there's something surprisingly easy parents can do. abc news chief health and medical editor dr. richard besser is here to tell us about it. this is the spoonful of sugar study? >> yeah. this is really interesting. kids under 4, can't use cold and cough medicine. too dangerous to use. but as a pediatrician, you want to be able to do something. and we've known that honey can be useful in treating a cough. but in kids under 1, you can't use it because of botulism. they decided to see if agave nectar worked. and in the study, they looked the same. and one group nothing. the parents rated them. and the kids who got the agave nectar and the colored water, the cough got better, less stuffy nose, slept better. they were equally effective compared to those who got nothing. it was really pretty incredible. >> you are all parents. do you feel like, you just want to do something?

and there's limited data for extreme exercise. but if you look at what we do know about exercise and pregnancy, the benefits for the mother and the baby far outweigh any risks. >> so if you're the average non-professional athlete, what is your recommendation? >> look at a couple of things when you talk about the physiology between the mom and the baby. this is during pregnancy. we care about the mom's core temperature, so we don't like things where you can get overheated. we care about the maternal heart rate. there's loose ligaments, so it can make sprains a little more easy to happen. and obviously, later in pregnancy, there's a big change in the center of gravity. so some take-home tips. again, this is for the average woman who wants to stay active. check with your doctor, your obstetrician, midwife before starting anything. obviously you want to stay cool when you work out. this is not the time for hot yoga, robin. >> got you. >> you want to say well-hydrated. and lastly, listen to your body. you heard the elite athletes say it. you know your body better than anyone. if something doesn't feel right,

good morning, i'm kristen sze. the reward has grown for information leading to an arrest in a possible road rage shooting that claimed the life of a young woman. police have raised the reward to $30,000 for information in a shooting death of pearla avina. the 30-year-old mother of four was riding in a car on 98th avenue in oakland sunday afternoon when someone in another car shot her. an update on your morning commute. where are the trouble spots? >> one trouble spot is in san jose. a two-car crash is blocking a lane southbound on the nimitz right on 101. so you'll be met with a ton of traffic. northbound side is a tough go. there's another crash, 22 miles per hour is your top speed. once you pass the accident, traffic is slow and go all the way to sfo.
