we have a terrific ending to a story we shared with you a couple of months ago here on abc 7 news. a local high school band's instruments vanished in august when they were at at & t park to play the national anthem. well, those instruments are back where they belong tonight. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at the high school with the story. great news. >> reporter: great news. credit goes to a good samaritan

but i have always been one to give credit where credit is due. so i'm going to give abc 7 news also a pat on the back. now, listen, this story has a lot of twists and turns before it becomes a happy ending. here's how it all unfolded. >> i don't really have the words to describe it. i don't know. just feels amazing. >> reporter: annabelle got her flute back, one of 14 musical instruments of the high school band that went missing two months ago. it happened after they played the national anthem at a giants game. the instruments were accidentally left in a bin at the stadium parking lot. when the band instructors realized they were gone, they went back but the instruments had disappeared. most of them belonged to the students. >> my mom had it since she started playing the flute which was when she was in fifth grade. so we've had it in our family
5:13 pm
for about 35 years. >> reporter: no one thought they would ever see the instruments again. >> they thought they were gone for good considering it's san francisco and a lot of things happen there. >> reporter: one thing did happen. on thursday, the band director got a phone call from a woman called jack. she had the instruments. >> i just couldn't believe it. it was, i mean, mind-blowing. >> reporter: jack's friend, a homeless man who collects tin cans at the stadium parking lot, found the bin with the instruments. he stayed with it for an hour thinking someone would retrieve them. no one did. he stashed them in his hovel near at & t park for safekeeping. eventually, he brought the instruments to jack, asking if she could keep them. >> this is a band. he goes i know, but i don't know whose and i don't know what to do with it. i can't keep it on the street. >> reporter: jack began searching the internet to find the rightful owners. bingo. she found my colleague, wayne freedman's story which she did shortly after the instruments were missing.
5:14 pm
>> she watched the story and figured out that it was that high school and how to find us. >> reporter: there were hugs and thank yous when band members got their prized possessions back. the students wanted to personally thank their homeless hero, but he could not be found. >> if he's out there, i would really just like to personally thank him for getting these back to us. it's such a nice thing to do. >> reporter: vic lee, abc 7 news. we have new information this afternoon on the number of californians targeted by hackers. a report from the attorney general says personal information on more than 18.5 million californians was hacked last year. a third of those people will become victims of fraud. the report says retailers, banks, health care providers and other organizations reported 167 different breaches during 2003. there were 131 breaches in 2012 but the number of hacked accounts was much smaller at two and a half million. according to gallup, what people fear most nowadays is not assaults or thefts but having their personal data ripped off
5:15 pm
by virtual bad guys. 69% of those surveyed say they worry about hackers making off with their credit card information from stores. the second most feared crime is having a phone or computer hacked. the two crimes are far more worrying than home burglaries, car break-ins or muggings, according to this survey. one out of four people say they or a member of their household had their credit card information stolen from a store. that's what they worry about the most. >> it's happened to most of us. b.a.r.t. is asking for your feedback on how to improve two of its most overcrowded stations. workers were at the embarcadero station passing out survey cards, asking riders what b.a.r.t.'s biggest priority should be. they are considering redesigning the embarcadero and montgomery street stations in order to keep up with the increase in ridership. >> i think the crowds around the escalators, elevators, but there are ways to manage that operation.
5:16 pm
it will take some effort. >> b.a.r.t. is also considering safety, access, appearance and the overall customer experience at the stations. workers will be at montgomery station thursday to ask riders for their input. to give b.a.r.t. your feedback, visit b.a.r.t..gov and click on the survey link. reclining seats. that's what i want. >> that would be lovely. if you need a quick pick-me-up to keep your house looking nice, listen to this. >> consumer reports is partnering exclusively with 7 on your side's michael finney to check it out. >> these are lightweight. they are a big deal right now. stick vacuums, they are called, weighing less than ten pounds. many cost under $100. there are some new ones that promise to be better cleaners but they cost a whole lot more. consumer reports put them to the test. >> need a quick pick-me-up to keep your house looking nice for the holidays?
5:17 pm
new lightweight stick vacuums from shark and dyson promise to not only do the trick but promise to be as good or better than full-sized vacuums. so consumer reports challenged them with this deep cleaning test, where dirt is poured on and pressed in, a test normally reserved for full sized vacuums. the stick vacs couldn't keep up. >> suction alone isn't enough. vacuum needs to have some weight and a powerful brush roll. stick vacs are generally under ten pounds and just won't do the job. >> don't count them out. when compared to others, they actually took the top three spots in consumer reports' tests. number one is this dyson dc-59 animal that does an excellent job on pet hair, light carpet cleaning and bare floors. but the animal is a beast when it comes to noise. one of the loudest stick vacuums tested. another dyson, the dc-59 motor head, came in a close second. it's a little quieter but wasn't quite as good on bare floors.
5:18 pm
both are cordless but at maximum power, only run about seven minutes before they need recharging. at $500, they cost far more than most decent uprights. if you don't mind a cord, the shark rocket is a more reasonable $180. the way it's designed prevents it from cleaning well along the left edge. but it sucks up pet hair like a champ. if you prefer a full size vacuum cleaner, consumer reports named a $100 hoover a best buy. the bagless hoover wind tunnel t series rewind offers impressive cleaning and superb pet hair pickup plus does really well as deep cleaning carpets and has a really long cool name. there you go. >> what more do you want? >> thank you. let's talk about the weather forecast. obviously people outside at civic center park trying to enjoy the giants game tonight. >> perfect for the season, right, sandhya? >> absolutely. it is just mild for the viewing.
