>> narrator: one by one, san francisco's baseball heroes took the stage at civic center plaza as those who normally take center age? politics could only sit back and -- center stage at politics could only sit back and enjoy. >> san francisco, all right! >> we had a sea of orange, and you guys stood behind these guys. you are a force. these guys, they feed off this force. i feed off that force. >> our shirts say "kiss the ring." there's no way we would be here without you guys. you made it fun for us to play in front of you every night. and it's been awesome. >> reporter: theization was about san francisco and the giant -- the celebration was about san francisco and the giants' fans and gave the players a chance to show their appreciation for the fans who support them not just now but earlier in the season when it seemed like just making the playoffs was a long shot.

>> i've waited a long damn time for this. and i thank you all for being behind us. ♪ >> reporter: in san francisco, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> what a moment. let's turn to abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman also at the civic center. wayne, you had a front row seat today. >> reporter: it's been quite a day. you've got to ask the question going in, there was a question -- are three world series championship in five years, is that enough to make a jaded san francisco audience go blase especially in weather like this? the answer would be no. take a look at what we saw this morning. if it had been a baseball game instead of a parade, this would have been a rainout. they poured out of buses, buildings, cars. they spilled into civic center plaza, the celebrating mass of fans and all for one last hurrah. and why not -- you know the back story. the significance of the numbers be 3, 5, and 7 as in the seventh game win and all that comes with it. we like the way we look this

starting to head home. b.a.r.t reports ridership down 20% from 2012. >> there's a big problem on cal train tonight. they just tweeted this message -- there is no practical way to handle the number of people coming out of san francisco right now. >> a problem. we have live break tonight at the th street -- like breaking news tonight at the 4th street station. >> reporter: there's a major backup of people waiting to hop aboard cal train. right as you see, this muni bus passing by reveal the cal train station. you can see people outside the station right now. that still has to loop all the way in front of the building. to the other side, then snakes around three or four times. that's not the long part of the line. i was talking to people around here who were telling me that they are in an hour and a half wait time right here midway. that's because the end of the line is all the way down to 7th street. i don't know if you can see in

the distance, there's a little red a. that is adobe headquarters. that is 7th street. it's about a quarter of a mile away from me. socal train says they are really working hard to make sure they can get everyone aboard these trains. in talking to people in line, they're not expecting to get home to their destinations on the peninsula and a little further south until will about 8:30 or 9:00 tonight if even then. there's going to be a lot of people trying to get home waitinging in lines. reporting live if san francisco, abc7 news. >> that is brutal. >> it is. thank you very much. the celebration started with a parade at midday, of course, as you know. >> the confetti started to fall on market street just after noon. and people were lined up ten deep at least to cheer on their favorite players. >> posey. >> posey. >> panic. >> panic. >> pence. >> posey.

>> posey. >> hunter pence. >> hunter pence. >> posey. >> abc 7 has more live on the parade highlights. >> reporter: i got a little -- [ inaudible ] >> i love it. i can't have enough. i want more. >> reporter: it was a feeling shared by every fan as members of the giants trickled down the parade route, showered with confetti. anyone who shows up at 3:00 in the morning to claim a spot is sure to have a tattoo of the giants or two or three. >> the 2010 world champions. i got the no hitter, both no hitters, the perfect game, and the 2014 -- 2012 championships signed by both teams. >> reporter: would you call yourself a fan? >> oh, yeah. diehard. >> reporter: in previous years lots of players walked and

greeted fans. this year, they mostly stayed on their designated double-decker buses. still, fan gs got to acknowledg the force -- acknowledge the team. >> we fought and got it. >> it's awesome. we got to meet the players and celebrate because they won the world series. >> seeing all the players, seeing all the confetti, the crowds cheering. electric. >> reporter: the parade included some of the heavy hitters and star pitchers of the past like juan marachal, willie mays, and barry bonds. tell me about the team. what do you think of it? >> oh, outstanding. outstanding. every one of them's outstanding. >> reporter: do you ever wish you would have been in a victory parade yourself? >> i am in one now. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the giants organization did not forget those who provide support for the team. this parade was for them, too.

an explosion jolted a walnut creek apartment complex sending two people to the hospital. it happened on sunnyvale avenue. as cowe report, authorities sayt was not caused by a gas leak.

>> reporter: that's right. the explosion of so loud, it was heard as far away as concord. sunnyvale avenue just reopened. the police investigation just beginning tonight. two people suspected of making drugs are in critical condition after something went wrong. a startling wake-up call for people on sunnyvale avenue. a fire and several explosions caught on this smart iphone camera at the exact moment this apartment blew up. the blast so strong it shattered windows across the street. >> i hear it, a big explosion. yes. >> reporter: what did it sound like? >> like a bomb. >> and i woke up with the noise and just the rattle of it. then i heard her yelling at me like, yet out, get out. >> reporter: zerrell saw two victim running from the explosion. >> two people teamwo, two guys fwi fire in their shirt and everything. >> reporter: the people, their clothes were on fire?

>> yeah. some still had the shirt on. and of it like on fire. so he was just going for water. >> reporter: two tenants who suffered critical burn in the blast are hospitalized. a search dog was brought in to look through the rubble for a third tenant possibly missing, but the k-9 found nothing. police say this of not a gas explosion but a drug lab making hash or honey oil. a concentrated form of pot. dozen of these highly explosive butane can were found near the blast used to make the drugs. fire investigators say it's not the first time. >> internet terms it's gone viral. in the contra costa fire jurisdiction we're experiencing five to six explosions and fires due to back to you you tape and hash oil a year. >> reporter: four units in this apartment building were so badly damaged they couldn't be red tagged. a temporary shelter has been set up at this nearby methodist church. in walnut creek, abc7 news. alameda county prosecutors dismissed charges today against one of the suspects in last

month's arson fires in almead arch the d.a.'s office announce -- alameda. the d.a.'s office announced it didn't have enough charges. prosecutors will move forward with felony arson charge against the other suspect, 22-year-old andrew gutierrez. police say he's the man seen in this surveillance video taken the night of the fires. in fact, they amended their complaint today to include charges originally filed against peterson. a man accused of hitting a police officer with his car is in the hospital after a dramatic chase. take a look at sky 7 h.d. video of the aftermath near geary and steiner. police say it began when officers tried to stop a car. suspect hit one of the officers and took off. police chased the car for six blocks until it crashed into another car around 3:30. three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the officer of not seriously injured. wet weather of behind several crashes today in sonoma

county. a pickup truck overturned into a ditch in sonoma county after noon on highway 101 near river road. no one of injured. no injuries in this crash in santa rosa. this happened around 10:00 this morning. a truck went off highway 12 off the off ramp on 101 and crashed into mud and grass. if forestville, a big rig -- in forestville, a big rig crashed. workers had to remove the tree for concern it would come down after the accident. >> we've talked for bhths ne neneed -- for months about needing the rain. ashame it came down on halloween. >> from the reporting i've seen, i don't think most of the fans in the parade cared at all. the players certainly didn't. >> great time anyway. >> right now, a little break for trick-or-treaters. the timinging is -- don't change -- >> good job, spencer. >> thank you very much. live doppler h.d., most of the rain is to the south and

east. cloudy skies. most of the bay area from the mid peninsula northward to the east is dry at the moment. but parts of the south bay, the santa cruz mountains and monterey bay getting a good dose of rainfall still. at least moisture moving through the atmosphere. here's a live view from the emrowville camera looking at -- emeryville camera looking at the sudan sky. lots of clouds overhead. almost everywhere, san francisco, oakland, san carlos, 55 apiece at san jose, morgan hill. 57 at half moon bay. here's another view of the northwestern sky from our towercamera. current temperature reading, 60 at santa rosa. 5 at napa. 57 in petaluma, fairfield. and a view of clouds and bright hughes of orange and yellow off in the distance. these are the forecast interests. a brief break for trick-or-treating. scattered showers will return later tonight and continue into tomorrow. then we'll have a sunny and mild

pattern for next week. satellite image shows the frontal system that brought us today's nice welcome dose of rainfall which is still occurring in spots mainly over in the central valley and parts of the monterey bay region. showers aimed almost directly, trailing showers, at monterey. some will pass through the bay area overnight. here the forecast animation starting at 7:00 this evening. notice later before midnight, even after midnight we'll see spokt of shower activity -- spokts of shower activity until the early morning hours. a heavier dose in the mid to late morning hours tomorrow. then it will taper off and wind down by early tomorrow evening. so additional rainfall totals, we project will reach maybe up to.-1 inch in the north bay -- up to .1 inch in the north bay. in the south bay mountain, another half inch to inch. in the sierraa, we have a winter storm warning in effect until tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. we're expecting four to eight inch of snow above 6,000 feet.

a chp officer accused of stealing nude photos from a woman's cell phone has resigned. sean harrington turned in his badge after being formally charged with stealing those explicit pictures. they were taken from a phone of a woman he arrested for drunk driving. he told authorities stealing nude photos is a game among officers at the california highway patrol office in dublin. two other officers who received copies of the pictures will not be charged. today investigators announced a surprise discovery when they searched the home of a man accused of videotaping stunt

motorcycle riders. youtube video from october 11th shows about 50 rider taunting a chp officer on highway 6 0 in milpitas. a 30-year-old was arrested after recording the video. he's been charged with two felonies. yesterday, officers searched his home in brentwood and found a marijuana grow operation with about 90 plants. they will pursue extra charges. oakland'sa efforts to improve public safety took a step forward. 5 members of the 170th -- 75 member of the 170th academy graduated. many speak a second language including spanish, kacantonese, and russian. 15 college graduates included four women and ten oakland residents. kids are out trick-or-treating. youngsters in one san francisco

one people was killed and another seriously injured when a virgin galactic spacecraft sflo exploded over the mojave desert today. we have the story. my husband sensed that there

was something wrong. he saw there was something wrong. i said, no, it's okay. >> reporter: she says when spaceship two broke apart in the air, she and her husband knowbo knew something terrible had happened. living in the mojave, they had seen numerous rocket ships and this of the worst. one was killed, another seriously injured when the spaceship two suffered an anomlano anomaly in midair and crashed. the surviving pilot ejected before it went down. mojave air and spaceport's ceo and manager said he witnessed it after 9:00 this morning. >> i will tell you from my eyes and my ears, i detected nothing that appeared abnormal. >> reporter: the rocket had detached from the motor ship some 5,000 feet in the air -- 45,000 feet in the air. they were using a new fuel along with a new motor, scaled composites built the rocketship, and virgin galactic operates the

ship. >> we were flying in a rocket motor today that had been thoroughly tested on the ground and had been through a qualification series. and of course we expected no anomalies with the motor. this motor configuration had flown a few time in the past. there was our fourth flight. >> reporter: the spacecraft two is the second accident involving a commercial spaceflight. ant deres blew up. >> it hasn't been an easy week, it's been a challenge. but from where i'm from, this is where you find out your true character. >> reporter: the neational transportation safety board is investigating what caused the tragic crash of spaceship two. residents of a rural community in northeastern pennsylvania vented their anger today against eric frein. the suspect in september's fatal ambush outside a state police

barracks. he showed no emotion as he was led into the court rouse in milford, 135 miles north of philadelphia. authorities captured the 31-year-old yesterday, ending a seven-week manhunt. he's charged with first-degree murder of a state police corporal and critically wounding a trooper. he did not enter a plea today. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty. a maine judge has given nurse case-- nurse caci hickox ability to self-monitor her health and coordinate travel and let officials know if anything changes. she's no longer forced to stay isolated in her house. the governor of maine described the ruling as unfortunate, but he won't challenge it. if you were caught sleeping on the job and arrested for driving under the influence, what do you think would happen to you? >> yeah, what do you think would happen if you were an armed peace officer.

tonight the i-team investigators what happened to a state park ranger picture bed here passed out if his vehicle with a beer in his lap. >> the i-team has an exclusive report on this tonight. we expect law enforcement officers to follow the rules. and when they break the law in such a public way, it's fair to examine whether they were treated as you and i would be. tonight we'll hear from the man who took the picture. august 15th, around 3:00 in the afternoon. just another workday for trucker jack her sst. he spot this california state park pickup, lights on, engine running, in gear, with the ranger passed out at the wheel. >> i yelled, sir, sir? no response. >> reporter: he was worried the ranger may have had a medical episode. he tried to wake him by pushing up and the down the bumper, banging on the fender, but it didn't work. >> i grab the him and his head

was bobbling. no response. i looked in, and there was alcohol between his legs. >> reporter: a keystone light beer. he called 911. >> i'm on the old highway. and there's a state parks guy, and i can't wake the guy up. >> reporter: hurst snapped that photo with his iphone? why did you take that picture? >> because no one believed me. the chp couldn't believe what i was saying. it was just hard to comprehend, i would say. >> reporter: but the chp could arrive, the ranger, 33-year-old tyson young, drove away. officers reported he was swerving over the center lane. a commander tells me it was a difficult case for officers. >> normally, an impaired driver is a citizen. we hope it they're not normally armed. now we have a park ranger on duty in uniform as a suspected dui driver -- >> reporter: the lieutenant would not give details of the arrest. but the misdemeanor complaint filed by prosecutors charged young with driving under the

there's been so much talk recently about head injuries in sports. that's going to make skiing safe this winter. >> yeah. we're that is michael finney.

>> reporter: as you said, we've heard a lot of concern over football players and others involved in team sports, as well. the work looking to make them safer is showing up on the ski slope this winter. concerns over football head injuries have led to major studies, legal settlements, and a closer look at other sports like soccer. >> i struggled with intense, piercing headaches that were so bad that by evening it was all i could do not to cry myself to sleep. >> reporter: the consideration conversation has changed as our awareness has been elevated. >> i think the difference between now and ten years ago is awareness. >> reporter: those concerns sparked scientific studies, the results of which are showing up on our local ski slopes. what started out as headwear for kids and snowboarders are now you common for skier, too. this winter, helmets are better than ever before. >> it has this rotating ear shell -- >> reporter: that's an editor with "outside" magazine.

the weather outside may have been frightful, but for some lucky fans, some had a

delightful place to watch the parade, the office buildings along market street. we have a report from what may have been the best seats in the house. [ cheers ] >> reporter: on any other day, it's just an office. on this day, it's transformed into a luxury box like the one at the ballpark. >> dead center, bird's eye view. not too high so you still feel part of it with the window open and music blaring. >> reporter: as the commoners squeezed up against each other, employees at liftopua opened their doors for guests and served up refreshments. they joined workers perched on windows and ledges, many holding up hunter pence sign. it's roybal good he was usual on the double-decker boss. some remember what it was like from down there two years ago. >> i couldn't get within ten rows of the front. i didn't see much other than trying to squeeze through. >> being in the trenches, horrible.

up here, we have a perfect view. >> reporter: the celebration wasn't a complete surprise. the folks were already setting up for a party that happened to involve orange and black. >> this is a once in a lifetime -- well, maybe several lifetimes if you're a zombie opportunity. >> reporter: zombies aren't the best at remembering. but this is actually the second time the world series victory parade happened on halloween. it might have given players a scare. >> good job. >> i should probably be back away slowly. >> yeah. you look like you're tasty. >> reporter: but you super heroes came to the rescue. and the fans outside stood covered in rain and wet confetti. the warm, dry office might have made it easier for these folk in the ski business to look on the bright side. >> raining outside, it mean it's snowing in tahoe. >> reporter: in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> they remind us that today's halloween, too.

>> good costumes there. pretty good timing actually for trick-or-treaters this evening. work ed out well. >> yes. it rained on the parade but stopped. here's live doppler 7 h.d. most of the rain is toward the central valley now. a few drops falling in parts of the santa cruz mountains. a nice break here for trick-or-treaters in the central part of the bay area. meanwhile, rainfall continue to surge into the monterey bay area and toward the central valley. tomorrow's november 1th. we'll look at the almanac for san francisco. the average high for the 1st of november, 68. we won't hit that tomorrow. the average at the end of the month is 61. that's more like tomorrow's weather. the highest ever temperature recorded in san francisco in november, 86. the lowest, 38. the average rainfall totalled 3.16 inches. we'd like to see that happen. showers moving southward but away from the bay area. in the bay area, we'll see maybe scattered showers earl willy and tapering off in the late afternoon.

[ cheers ] >> yes, yes, yes. pay the panda. while the giants try to work something out with sandoval, the warriors got a deal done with the star shooting guard, clay thompson. a max deal, four-year extension worth about $70 million. remember, the summer it looked like thompson might be part of a trade package for kevin love. the warriors did not want to give clay up. thompson averaged 18 points a game last year. one of the top shooter in the nba. terrific defender, as well. the splash brothers will remain together. the warriors home opener tomorrow again the lakers. one more baseball note. now that the world series is over, the cubs fired rick renteria and hired joe madden as their new manager. madden opted out of his deal with the low-budget tampa bay rays knowing that he would have other, more lucrative offers. madden facing quite a challenge, though. the cubs have not won the world series since 1908. spencer did the broadcast. 106 years and counting.

giants and another world series championship. you don't have to care just about baseball to understand what a moment like this means to and does from a community. by defining, a community is a unified body of individuals, a group of people with a common interest. and that's exactly what we saw on the streets of san francisco and at city hall today. the celebration of about so much more than baseball. it transcends sports in every way. in a world so contentious, so divided sometimes, we relish the chance. we need the chance to come together if even for a day or world series. the jeans gave us something far more important than a sports title. they gave us a moment of unity, joy, and community pride. a welcome break from isis, ebola, and election-year politics. a reminder that what really matters is not whether you win or lose but how you enjoy the game. from the giants and city on this halloween, no trick. only one wonderful treat.
