good morning, thanks for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. >> and i'm matt keller. a look at the accuweather forecast. how is it looking, lisa? >> most of the activity has been along the coast, light showers in the south bay and as we check out live doppler 7, rain, m moderate to palo alto over into the east bay, 680 and 880 have been wet and down around mon monterey and santa cruz heavier showers offshore. we widen the perspective. you can see these are rotating to the east. so we're keeping the chaps of showers in the forecast throughout the day today. in fact, we could even see a thunderstorm. pretty shot here for you. that's mt. diablo.

low to mid-60s for highs today and isolated showers are possible mixed in with some sunshine and we'll look for a much drier sunday. all the details coming up. chris and matt? the glow of another world series championship is still settling over the bay area. hundreds of thousands of people came out to celebrate their heroes the. as fans celebrated they left behind a mess, and there was another mess trying to get out of the city. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana has details. i've been standing in line for about an hour. >> reporter: from sky 7 hd you can see how far downtown the line of people extended. according to cal trans, ridership may have set a record. how long have you been in line? >> i don't even know. an hour, maybe longer. >> reporter: where did you get in line? >> around 8th street. >> reporter: some people lost

their patience. this argument caused people to be temporarily booted from the line by sheriff's deputies. three hours proved to be too line so they turned to this superhero driver and others. taxis, uber and lift cars shuttle people down the peninsula. this couple called in their daughter for a ride. >> we were expecting to take the train. i had tickets. i bought ticket, but there's no way i'm waiting in that. >> reporter: just after the parade, street sweepers with brooms and on wheels moved in fast to clear up the streets. confetti was everywhere. union employees had to clear the lines by hand before street cars and buses could resume service. the nightmarish rush of the people out of the city did end and city hall is nearly all dismantled. what is still here is the orange afterglow of another world series championship. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. some giants fans had a tough time catching an uber ride

because the service was overloaded. here is video of what users saw yesterday, just a blue dot on they are mobile devices. they reported the outage at around 6:30 last night. even if fans were able to get a ride, it cost them four times the normal rate because of surge pricing. we saw a the lot of kids at yesterday's victory parade even though it was a school day. according to the san francisco unified school district, more than 11% of students took the day off. that's up from about 7% on an average day. district officials tell us the majority of those absences were from high school students. for those of us who went to the parade it was quite an experience. >> fans waited in the cold and rain for hours, but many told us it was all worth it. elissa harrington has more. >> reporter: a mix of confetti and rain showered the streets of san francisco making for a soggy world series celebration. >> even on a rainy day, can't

keep the spirits down around here. >> reporter: thousands of fans in ponchos and umbrellas lined the streets of the city for the giants victory parade. >> we're here. we are freezing, we're cold, we're hungry, but we're here to support. >> reporter: this fan shows his support in ink. >> 2010 world championship. >> reporter: players waved from the top of double decker buses. manager bruce bochy carried the team trophy while pitcher madison bumgarner proudly held up his mvp award. this is the team's third world series title in five years, but -- >> it never gets old, let's put it that way. >> reporter: also on the parade route, legends from the past, willie mays and barry bonds. ed lee has been the mayor of san francisco for the past two world series wins. >> i can't believe it's three in five years. it's fascinating how this was the most torturous series we could could ever experience. i think it's all about teamwork. >> reporter: the rally ended at a decorated city hall for a

ceremony on stage. mayor ed lee gave the team a key to the city. the giants thanked fans. >> this is the best moment of our lives and our baseball careers. you couldn't ask for anything better than this. >> world champ quons. >> yes, yes, yes! >> can we do it again? >> yes, yes, yes! >> reporter: the band train played them out capping off another magical season. ♪ kuz we are the champions of the world ♪ >> reporter: and some not so familiar faces were also included in the parade like some season ticket holders and ve vendors, staff members including one man who has been selling souvenirs for the giants since 1961. in the newsroom, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. well, one of the reasons this team has so many fans, they're relatable. they're regular guys. here is proof of that. a touching moment during the ceremony. shortstop brandon crawford holding his daughter, sharing this day with her. and it even appeared the young one was playing with his old championship ring from the last

time the giants won the world series. and here is our mvp, pitcher madison bumgarner, taking time out of the parade to hop on a horse with some of san franci o francisco's finest. look at the officers, of course, wearing giants hats. did you make it to the victory parade? if so go to our abc 7 news facebook page and share this victory badge. it reads i was there there 2014 giants victory parade. even if you didn't make it in person you can still share it if you watched the parade on abc 7 news. turning to other news across the bay, two men treated for severe burns suffered when their apartment exploded in walnut creek. it happened on sunnyvale avenue not too far from the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station. the men turned their unit into a lab to make hash oil, and as abc 7 news reporter alan wang explains, about 50 people had to be evacuated. >> i just got out of the shower. all i heard was a huge boom and looked out my front door, saw that thing in flames.

>> reporter: melanie mcdonald is one of several residents trying to get back into had their homes after this walnut creek apartment blew up. the explosions were caught on this cell phone camera. >> but it kept going off over and over again, kind of these fireballs kept going up. >> reporter: the impact blew out w windows across the street. four units were destroyed. eight others are uninhabitable for now. trick-or-treaters worked walked by the horrific site while crews stabilize what was left of the apartment. >> i saw him in flames scream. >> reporter: richard green blatt says he saw one of two men who occupied the unit that exploded. 30 he lease say both were critically burned while using hundreds of butane canisters to turn marijuana into hash oil. >> this has become the new drug of recent choice. >> reporter: now a contra county prosecutor is thinking of using enhanced charges for manufacturing drugs around children who lived nearby.

police in southern california are on the hunt for a driver after three trick-or-treaters were killed in a hit-and-run. the girls all aged 13 were crossing the street when the driver slammed into them. the car was going at a high rate of speed in a 25-mile-per-hour

school zone. a witness says two men abandoned it and took off running. the chp officer accused of stealing racy photos were a woman's cell phone has resigned a. source has confirmed to abc 7 news that harrington no longer works at the agency. yesterday they filed two felony charges against harrington. a surprise discovery when they searched the home of someone taunting a chp officer. about 50 motorcycle stunt riders taunting the officer and interstate 680. the person who allegedly took the video was arrested wednesday and charged with two fell nice. officers found 90 marijuana plants and a loaded rifle.

prosecutors have dismissed charges against one of the suspects in september's arson fires in alameda. the d.a.'s office announced it didn't have enough evidence to support charges against steven peterson released from jail two weeks ago. they will move forward with charges against the other suspect seen in this surveillance video taken the night of the fires. they amended charges. a man accused of hittinging a mrafr is in the hospital after a dramatic chase. you're looking at sky 7 hd video. police say it began when officers tried to stop a car near turk and levin worth. they chase d the car for about six blocks until it crashed in a another car at around 3:30. three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the officer was not seriously injured.

turning now to that deadly crash, the virgin galactic spaceship. one of the pilots killed and the second disaster to hit the private space industry this week after that rocket exploded on takeoff in virginia a few days a ago. david curly is in washington with more. >> reporter: these photos capture the very end, the release of the mothership and debris from spaceship two. the craft starting to break up. all of it falling to earth, a parachute, one pilot carried to a helicopter. the second pilot died. >> space is hard. today was a tough day. >> reporter: this and earlier test flights, the mothership carries a spacecraft at 50,000 feet, releases it and the craft fires its own rocket, part of the dream of richard branson to take a half dozen passengers at a time to space.

he has deposits on 700 tickets including some of hollywood's elite, pitt, carey, dicaprio. it is one of the most difficult trips i've ever had to make but he wants to be with the teams now in shock at the devastating loss. observers say the rocket wasn't getting the craft high enough. this flight was the first to use a new fuel which had only been tested on the ground. >> obviously it failed spectacularly. >> reporter: a documentation of spaceship two and knows many who work on the program. >> they were concerned about the pace of the program. >> reporter: this was the second syrupous setback for the space industry. tuesday a cargo rocket exploded after liftoff. after the failure of spaceship two, what will those hollywood stars and hundreds of others this morning think about riding that rocket? >> customers weren't necessarily paying attention. this might have been a wake-up call for them. >> reporter: ntsb investigators

and richard branson should be on the site today trying to figure out what went wrong with that space plane. david kerley, abc news, washington. 35 members of the city's 170th police recruit academy graduated yesterday. the department says the diver diversity is reflected in this class. many speak a second language including spanish, japanese, korean and russian. it includes 15 college gradua s graduates. san francisco police will host a gun buyback program. it is it is anonymous with no questions asked. $100 will be paid out for each firearm and rifle and up to $200 for an assault rifle. they must be unloaded and in working condition. the event held rain or shine at the glenn eagle golf course in mclaren park.

residents in in northeastern pennsylvania are vetting anger against eric frein. frein showed no emotion yesterday as he was led into the courthouse in milford, 135 miles north of philadelphia. authorities captured the 31-year-old thursday ending a seven-week manhunt. he's charged with fers-degree murder after state police corporal and critically wounding a trooper. he did not enter a plea. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty. a judge in maine has given nurse kaci hickox the okay to go where she pleases. it's a victory for her. she challenged state officials trying to restrict her movements for 21 days. she now has to self-monitor her health, coordinate travel, and let state officials know if her health changes. but she's no longer to forced to stay isolated. the governor of maine has described the ruling as unfortunate but says he will not challenge it. happening today what might

be a last-ditch effort to prevent the sale of the historic downtown berkeley post office. a group called the berkeley post office defenders vow to use their bodies in protest. a similar pro-it test held earlier this year. federal officials confirmed that a contracted sale exists between an unnamed buyer and the postal service are for the building. the postal service says the building no longer fits its needs. protesters say the sale of public property in private hands must stop. the history of transit in san francisco will be on display today as part of muni heritage weekend. this is a must for those with an interest in early transit. vintage motor and trolley buses running along with historic street cars rarely in service. these are scenes from last weekend. it takes place between noon and two from the market street railway museum. so if people are heading out in the city today, maybe bring a jacket just in case.

half a foot of snow. so most of the snow has been falling south around south lake. picking up more snow along highway 50 and looking at the winter storm warning right through about noon. here is a look at another vantage point looking at 56. low to mid-50s on this panel but take a look here where numbers are at the about 40 degrees. you've had some breaks in the overcast with the clearing and the colder air. by the delta a little bit of rain this morning. 48 and 50 in concord so overall behind the front the cooler air filtering in. still that trough and the possibility of showers. you see a little bit of sunshine there. scattered showers, maybe a thunderstorm. the time change tonight. we gain an hour of sleep. more sunshine, dry conditions

tomorrow. that sets the stage for a warming trend. the south bay, maybe a few pop-ups over mt. diablo and anywhere from nothing to about .01 to maybe a third of an inch of rain and some of the wetter locations of the santa cruz mountains, maybe up to half an inch. really much of the south bay and peninsula looking at some bonus rain this morning. elsewhere a cool high today with 64 in san rafael. that seems to be the popular number from palo alto to san jose and morgan hill. 63 in oakland. low 60s in half moon bay. we'll warm it up with drier conditions tomorrow. high pressure slowly builds in. warmer weather and mid and upper 60s along the coast through midweek. and then we'll climb to the upper 70s which will be above average for wednesday and thursday. so abc 7 news is another great weather resource for you to

parts of the central coast and south bay, davenport wet as well as big sur. as we head outside right now san francisco has been dry. chilly conditions in the north bay. just 40 in napa right now. low to mid-60s. a possibility of more showers and isolated thunderstorms and throughout the day we'll continue to see the rain shift south and we will dry out. i'll talk about the rest of the weekend, a dry drier, warmer week ahead. thanks, lisa. now to the release of a veteran who spent seven months behind bars in mexico. he says it was all because he made a wrong turn on the highway and round up south of the border. this morning he's on his way home. >> reporter: overnight images of relief and joy. an american veteran back on american soil at last. the sergeant released from a

mexican jail on friday after 214 days of cap sift. a mexican judge citing his mental state. >> the mexicans made it clear to us they wanted their judicial process to con clues and it did. and they made the right choice. >> this experience in the last seven months is in a lot of ways retraumatized him. >> reporter: the 6:00-year-old seen here boarding a plane, returning to his hometown early this morning. averagely detained for crossing the border with a loaded gun. telling an operator that he ended up at the border where he couldn't turn around. >> i got to the border by accident and i have three guns in my truck and they're trying

blaring. >> reporter: as the commoners squeezed up against each other, the employees at liftopia, the discount ski website, opened their doors for a few guests and served up the refreshments. they joined hundreds of office workers perched in windows and on ledges, many holding up the hunter pence signs. it's probably good he was up on the double decker bus. the ceo remembers what it was like to watch down there. >> i couldn't get within ten rows of the front. i didn't see much. >> being down there in the trenches horrible. up here we have a perfect view. >> reporter: the celebration wasn't a complete surprise. they were setting up for a party that happened to involve orange and black. >> reporter: zombies aren't the best at remembering but this is the second time the world series victory parade has happened on halloween.

it might have given players a scare. >> good job anyway. >> reporter: i should probably back away slowly. >> you look like you're pretty tasty. >> reporter: but superheroes came to the rescue as fans covered in rain and wet confetti, the warm, dry office might have made it easier. in san francisco jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. what a great view. social media was certainly abuzz. hunter pence tweeted out this picture saying the belt, the dream. thank you. even the main library in san francisco got into the spirit of hunter pence signs. this sign encouraged people to return their books on time.

with the help from a man, the mau seem of history is a 200,000 square fat museum and will likely be different from any other you've visited. the culmination of a bay area man's lifetime of giving back. images still as haunting today as when the world first saw them six decades ago. hitler's final solution. nowhere was the plan more devastating than in poland. 90% eliminated. one person escaped the holocaust but many in his family did not. he came to this country as a young boy, attended stanford and built a successful real estate business turning his attention to philanthropy, he's been part of a project about the other side of poe lib jews. why has it been so important for you directly? >> i think the history of how jews lived for 1,000 years prior to the holocaust is virtually

unknown. and we felt that's a very important story to tell. >> to tell the story, a state-of-the-art facility that sits on the site of the warsaw ghetto where hundreds of thousands of jews were forced to live before being taken to the death camps. i visited with several holocaust survivors including linda who spent three years at the notorious auschwitz. 60 years after she walked out of auschwitz, she walked in again with me. when you stand here at auschwitz, linda, now 60 years later, do images, emotions run through your mind? >> i have no emotions here. >> no emotions here? >> no emotions here. >> later on our trip, understandably, the emotions came. we stayed in touch until lyindas death a few years ago. i saw with my own eyes how jews were killed. what you're saying this museum is about how jews lived long

before the holocaust. >> that's right. it's a very, very important history because during that 1,000-year period most of the elements of western culture evolves. the revival of jewish life in a country that became a graveyard for millions. comprised of eight salons they take visitors through the different periods of jewish life in poland. when people leave this museum what do you hope they will walk away with? >> well, first and foremost they're going to walk away with a much deeper understand iing o what jewish people globally are all about. the first reaction is almost tund. you're so saturated with things one never knew about. >> and that was dan ashley

reporting. the museum expects to attract a million from around the world. many will come from this country where 80% of all jews are of polish descent. coming up 7 on your side's michael finney takes a close look at a new government lawsuit claiming millions of smartphone users have been misled. what a beautiful shot this morning from our abc 7 roof camera. the bay bridge it there and showers in the south bay, rain as well. lisa argen will let you know how long it's going to last and what you can expe the united states population is going to grow by over 90 million peoplever the next 40 years and almost all the growth is going to be in cities. what's the healthiest and best way for them to grow so that they really become cauldrons of prosperity

and cities of opportunity? what we have found is that if that family is moved info safe, clean, affordable housing, places that have access to great school systems, access to jobs and multiple transportation modes then neighborhood begins to thrive and really really take off. the oxygen of community redevelopment is financing and all this rebuilding that happened could not have happened without organizations like citi. citi has formed a partnership with our company so that we can take all the lessons from the revitalization of urban america to other cities so we are now working in chicago, and in washington d.c., and newark. it's amazing how important safe affordable housing is to the future of our society.

federal regulators are accusing at&t moebltd of not giving customers the unlimited data plan they purchased. michael finney reports on a first of its kind lawsuit filed by the federal trade commission. >> reporter: the numbers are staggering. 3.5 million individual customers throttled by at&t more than 25 million times. matthew gold is the federal trade commission attorney who filed the case in san francisco. they are promising unlimited data to smartphone customers and not providing the unlimited data as promised.

>> reporter: by e-mail the senior vice president and general counsel told 7 on your side we informed all unlimited data plan customers that resulted in nearly 2,000 news stories well before the proem was implemented. the program has affected only about 3% of our customers. the ftc says the language was not understandable and they failed to disclose. the timing of at that ti&t's disclosures. >> they haven't done a single thing that they should have done which is tell consumers at the point of sale that they were going to be throttled. >> reporter: the electronic frontier foundation applauded the lawsuit and questions how at&t goes about throttling.

is throttling saying we're going to throttle you. >> reporter: at&t called it baseless and says its practiceses are fully transparent. at&t discontinued its unlimited data plan. 4 million customers currently on the plan were grand fathered in. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. lisa is here now and, you know, we've the showers sticking around which is a good thing for us. >> yes, especially in the south bay and the peninsula picking up more rain. moisture and instability is the name of the game. offshore, a shower here. looking gray in the 50s now so a cooler day and showers not for everyone. i'll explain next. also ahead, his heart is in san francisco. will panda's bat be here next year? larry beil has your saturday morning sports report after the break.

welcome back. a live look outside this morning from our camera just atop the abc 7 studios. you see the bay bridge in the distance there. the sun trying to peek through and the flags, too. a slight breeze on this saturday morning. >> in the south bay still getting showers. >> along the central coast highway one.

you can see a lot of green. this will be rotating throughout the morning hours and a portion of the afternoon. so you can see the green here. this is all pushing to the south. through san mateo and redwood city you've seen wet weather here from belmont to redwood city some light rain further west. heavier cells and we go to morgan hill, a hill rain shower effect going on to the west of you. looking at the rain in the south bay. look at the heavier showers, highway 1 from monterey down to big sur, this continues further south into san luis obispo. there still is more moisture offshore. the chance of showers through the morning hours and the possibility right through the early evening hours. the snow has been more concentrated from the southern sierra in yosemite, around

kirkwood they've picked up about 8 inches. in the northern sierra we are still getting snow. that winter storm warning in effect for the next couple of hours. here's the view from mt. tamm with the cloud top out there making for a pretty sight. temperatures have been much warm earp with the cloud cover, san carlos 55. 64 half moon bay. but you head to the north bay where you have some holes in the overcast, it is really cool. a little bit of fog with just 40 in napa. 43 in santa rosa. and this is shower camera showing some clearing here but we are still look iing at the possibility of maybe a scattered shower. look how cold we are compared to yet. as much as 20 degrees colder in napa. even with the rain showers, a chilly start. colder in mt. view. here is emeryville. a pretty shot and the atmosphere continues to be unstable today for the possibility of a shower, maybe a thunderstorm. we have this to look forward to getting an extra hour of sleep

and tomorrow high pressure builds in allowing for a drying trend. there is the trend for the rest of the morning. notice the afternoon trends mostly dry and we'll look from nothing in your neighborhood to about a half inch in it's going to be a cool day today statewide and looking at rain showers and snow showers. 63 in monterey with the scattered showers. and temperatures around the bay in a narrow range to about 65 in fremont and livermore. we gain an extra hour of sleep, most of us. upper 60s tomorrow with dry conditions. low to mid-60s. that time change makes no difference with little kids. >> i have two young ones. everybody loses an hour.
