and good monday morning to you all. we begin with the bitter weather either heading your way right now or it's already there. >> a result of massive cold air from the north pole headed to most of the u.s. expected to put 42 states into the deep freeze. tahman bradley now on the early winter that has already started. >> reporter: this morning, frigid arctic air is barreling into the u.s., sending temperatures plunging. overnight, snow in bismarck, north dakota. in soda springs, california, this is what people are waking up to. after ten inches of snow. in wisconsin and minnesota, where a foot of snow is expected, salt trucks and plows are standing by. >> we're getting ready before the snow. >> got the plows on the trucks. we've got the salt in the salt sheds. so we're ready. >> reporter: with temperatures expected to stay below 30 degrees, shelters are filling up. >> we have one room open tonight. but we'll be full tomorrow morning. >> reporter: in the chicago area, signs of the approaching holiday season.

and the winter storm season. >> is that the polar vortex of 2014-2015? and i prepared for the winter? not mentally. definitely not mentally. >> reporter: this cold snap is not the result of the polar vortex, but rather a big dip in the secret stream. last week, one of the most powerful storms every recorded, typhoon nuri, 800 miles wide, battered the alaska islands, kicking up winds and waves. >> we don't need to get anybody hurt. just get home safe. >> reporter: typhoon nuri's size and strength helped push the jet stream over the eastern part of the u.s. forecasters say this week, many places will struggle to top the freezing mark. making november feel more like january. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> and check this out. one state not impacted by this? alaska. for millions of us, low temperatures will stick around for quite some time. >> accuweather meteorologist jim dickey has details. good morning, jim. >> good morning, t.j. and tai.

a wintry week lies ahead of us. we start things off here today with some snowfall. that across the dakotas and on to the great lakes. disrupting snow in many locations. a stripe of snow from montana into minnesota and wisconsin. it includes the twin cities. a good 6 to 12 inches by the time all is said and done. this brings in a shot of arctic air to the eastern seaboard by friday. again, it will feel more like january than november. a good 10 to 20 degrees below average. another way to visualize this. it will be ten-plus days in many of these locations, northern plains, upper midwest, before temperatures rise back above the freezing point. t.j. and tai, back to you. >> thank you, jim, as always. breaking overnight, a well-known evangelical minister has died in a plane crash. myles monroe was killed in a plane crash in the bahamas. on his way to a leadership conference he was hosting. his learjet clipped a crane on the way in. the plane exploded when it hit the ground, killing all nine on board. there was heavy rain at the time. it's not known if that contributed to the crash.

monroe was 60 years old. president obama is in china this morning trying to strengthen economic ties with asia. at a high-level summit. >> vladimir putin is also there, but no official talks are on the agenda thus far. abc's mary bruce traveling with the president, and she joins us from beijing, mary? >> reporter: good morning, tai, good morning, t.j. or i guess i should say good afternoon from here in beijing. the president touched down here last night. kicking off a dizzying week of summit meetings here in asia. the president coming off those bruising midterm losses is trying to shift his focus to foreign policy. it's been three years since the obama administration said it would pivot its focus to asia. then, of course, it got distracted by a host of international and domestic crises. with just two years left in office, this week, in many ways, presents the best final chance for the president to cement his foreign policy legacy here in asia.

he'll meet with the president of china, the two world's largest economies colliding here. next, the president goes to burma for his second trip to the fledgling democracy as president. and the trip, of course, wraps up down under in brisbane, australia, where president obama will likely come face to face with russian president putin at the g-20 summit. the president will attend three international summits in eight days, traveling to three countries and 16 time zones. buckle up, it will be quite a trip. tai and t.j.? >> thank you, mary. now a bit of mystery this morning, surrounding the fate of the leader of isis. iraqi officials are saying that abu bakar al bagdadi was critically wounded in an air strike this week. the pentagon says they have no information on whether that is true. the u.s. has put a $10 million price tag on his head. sfwlmplt breaking news. a horrific scene at a high school in nigeria. a suicide bomb er dressed as a

student set off a bomb. we'll be following this story throughout the morning. meantime, in germany, tens of thousands of people marked the anniversary of the end of another war. some 8,000 l.e.d.-illuminated helium balloons stretched for nine miles reimagining the berlin wall. they were released into the sky marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the berlin wall. two americans held by north korea are back in the u.s. this morning. after their weekend release. kenneth bae who had been held for two years, celebrated his freedom how else? having pizza with the family. his sister says he's in good spirits and doing remarkably well. >> he holds court. and he just regales people with funny stories. that's just who he is as a person to begin with. so you could tell, he was so hungry for that. he still has a tremendous heart for the people of north korea. he wants to see things well.

he only has the best wishes and intentions for that country still. >> meanwhile, the other captive, matthew todd miller, he served eight months before his release. he was arrested in april after entering the country on a tourist visa and then tearing it up asking for asylum. the cdc has ordered $2.7 million worth of protective gear to help deal with any new cases of ebola in america. the supplies will be divided into 50 kits for u.s. hospitals. they will include special gowns and coveralls. with demand so high in africa, the cdc placed the order ahead of time before supplies run out. and today is the last one nurse kaci hickox will have to monitor herself for ebola. the 21-day incubation period ends at midnight. she says she's looking forward to going out to dinner with her boyfriend. she's worried about the

reception she'll get. the couple says they're moving out of town soon. three crew members from the international space station are back on earth. >> they pushed off in a tiny capsule at 7:30 eastern time last night. they landed three hours later in a russian snowy field. ground crews carried them to waiting chairs. the crew included american reed wiseman. they traveled more than 70 million miles. coming up, doritos-flavored soda. plus, breaking business news overnight. the report showing just how harmful those detergent pods can be. and the action in the stands that has the seahawk nation talking.

there's new evidence general motors was aware of the ignition switch defect much earlier than it has admitted. there are reports that they ordered replacement switches almost two months before it notified safety regulators about the problem. the switches are linked to at least 30 deaths. nissan now announcing recalls because of potentially dangerous air bags. they could send shrapnel flying. a study released overnight are raising alarms about the colorful laundry detergent pods. accidental poisonings sent more than 700 children to the

moment for this family. >> there was a man in my home. and he took my 5-year-old daughter. and, i happened to wake up. >> reporter: that 5-year-old girl snatched from her bed in sandy, utah, and carried out through her front door by a stringer. >> e just bolted because i heard the screen door. we were both ran. >> reporter: her step father, running outside, confronting the accused abductor on the family's lawn who then let the girl go. experts telling us that quick reaction is one example of chat that family did right. and some lessons in this for everyone. the suspect first tried to break into several other homes but couldn't get in. it wasn't until he found a side door unlocked at this home that he found his opportunity. >> not only should the doors be locked, but the skreer doors, the windows. >> reporter: experts suggest having lights jour door. and they recommend parents have

sharp curve, hit a truck, and went air borne. the driver only suffered minor injuries. the family inside was not hurt. the car was removed. a brown university student has tested positive for a date rape drug she says was in the punch at a fraternity party. test results from a second student are still pending. one of the students also reported being sexually assaulted. the university has suspended the fraternity. the fraternity says they're confident that the fraternity is innocent. look at this. the team's mascot got lost. flew up into the stands. usually, the handler lets this hawk go. it flies around the stadium. it's supposed to go back to the handler. it landed on the guy as you
