there's sunny conditions. there's rain in the outlook and we will talk about it coming up, chris. >> thank you so much. passengers flying out of oakland international were put on another flight after a bird strike forced their original plane to make an emergency landing. you see it had to loop around shortly after takeoff. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has more. >> minutes into alaska airlines flight 349, this transmission if air-traffic control. progress on the south field. >> you can see the alaska airlines plane back on the ground at oakland international. according to a spokesperson for the airline, a bird smashed into the nodes of of the plane. a passenger took this picture as he and the other 150 people aboard left the plane. i talked with him through the airport paging system. he said we didn't notice the plane do anything. pilot came on the p. a. and said we had a bird strike. the captain also announced that the impact knocked out an

electronic panel inside the cockpit but his first officer equipment was fine so they safely landed. by phone the airline said their pilots are trained for those emergencies. >> they have training and every year they do training where they come back and fly in our simulators, which are state of the or the, designed to exactly replicate the flight deck of a 737. >> she also said the flight will resume with the replacement plane. the damaged plane will stay ground for further inspections. at oakland international, abc7 news. >> the napa earthquake is still causing problems more than two months later. a water main broke near highways 12 and 29. it ruptured around dinnertime last night alan wang has more from the site of yet another main break in napa that happened last week. >> the latest water main break is just north of highway 12 and

highway 29 in napa. city officials say it's so close to a creek that crews were unable to fix it. it's the second break along the same 36-inch main this week. it's putting a damper on christie's wine country vacation with her friends. >> it's been kind of a problem getting to our house. it's causing a lot of slow traffic and it's just been -- it's a little of an announce for us. >> meanwhile construction on another main break continues along browns valley road. until both ruptures of repaired, napa city officials say residence could see fluctuations in their water fresh along foster and browns valley road. >> when the girls were showering today because there was a lot of us here, but for all of us to shower and rotate, it wasn't good because the pressure was low and i think because the water main broke. >> people are being asked to conserve and avoid unnecessary water use. this is a delayed result, they say, from the august 24th earthquake. public works has seen more than

150 breaks and leaks since the quake. in napa, alan wang, abc7 news. >> it's been a week since a 16-year-old gorilla died at the san francisco zoo, crushed under an electronic door. but as the abc7 eye team reports, due administrators have heard warnings about that very same door for years. dan investigated operations at the zoo before. he has a story you will see only on abc7 news. >> this team the zoo released a note from the zookeeper about the death of the gorilla. her grandmother was carrying her into room 4 for the night and keep he were writes i began to close electric door 4 and when i looked at it it was closed and she was caught in the door closer chest. but documents obtained by the zoo show a long history with the operation of that same door.

a log entry that january 27, 2010 notes, a gorilla that was about the same age when she died, got hand caught in electric door 4. not using it but of at first but mildly favoring it. a doucepere said avoid shipping her into electric doors that are hard to see gorillas through. the door that killed her is the farthest away from the control panel. in may, 2010, a different door trapped her again. the doucepere worked i didn't catch the door in time. he screamed. looked like there was a gash in left middle knuckle. knuckle swollen. he illustrated where it happened on his hand. >> there's a lot of issues in that building. there's visibility issues, there's lighting issues. the configuration of the rooms is not ideal. >> they are bringing in a zoo expert from florida. he said one obvious solution would be to have a second set of eyes when transferring the gorillas past those doors. >> if there are two of you

operating the system and one person doesn't see something, the other can say, hey, look at this. there's something going on, there you need to stop. >> but almost a year to the day before she died, a zookeeper e-mailed management asking for a second employee, a gate keep are available for all shifting. shifting is when the zookeepers move the gorillas after the door. >> if they had taken action after the e-mail after one year ago, there's a chance she could be alive today. a source said she's gas stayed by with a happened and hasn't worked since then. she feels the zoo is trying to blame her as a way to deflect attention. a spokesperson said they will not have any comment until the investigation is over. for the i-team, dan noyes. abc7 news. >> the city council is to deliver the oakland zoo a key victory in its effort to expand.

the council will consider their request to expand a conservation zone into nolan park and create agonad law ride. they have raised concerns over the attempt to spread into the park sag it would reduce public open space and threaten prime habitat. >> a man who owns dozen of horses will face animal cruelty charges after of. neighbors said the horses were starving. the da decided to press charges. the owner, huberto is currently in jail on an unrelated charge. he will be arraigned. more than 30 of his horses have been seized this week. they will be put up for adoption. we have a link on our website, abc7news.com. new this morning, a chp officer and a sonoma county

sheriffs deputy are recovering from injuries after their car slammed into a tree. it happened last night. unmarked car that the two were riding in hit some furniture in the road. the car spun off the highway and slammed into a tree. the car was totaled. both the chp hospital and the sheriff's office were taken to santa rosa memorial hospital with injuries that aren't considered to be life-threatening. three men whose job it is to uphold the law are accused of break by smuggling illegal contraband into jail for gang members. the two were arrested thursday. they are accused of bringing cell phones into the correctional facility in redwood city. ishmael, seen here in court yesterday, is also accused of smuggling the drug oxycodone into the jail. this man, jerry phong, is in jail this morning accused of harassing two girls in separate incidents outside the san mateo

high school. police saw him driving around the school. he matched the description the girls gave. right now police are trying to find another man who approached a teenage at the san mateo adult school, offering her money to go with him >> take a look at this man. he went up to a two-year-old girl in a crowded costco, patted the child on the head and tried to get the child it leave with him. he started walking away when he noticed the girl's mother. this happened in south san francisco last sunday. police just released this picture of him yesterday. a surgeon working in sierra leone who is diagnosed with ebola is on his way to the u.s. for treatment. dr. martin solea could arrive today. once he does he will be taken to the hospital in omaha. he's a general surgeon working in free town, the capital. no word on how he contacted the virus. he's a citizen of sierra leone

but he's a permanent resident of the united states and lives in misdemeanor. a stanford doctor who went to west africa to fight the virus is now free from quarantine. he left his home for the first name three weeks yesterday. state guidelines require precautionary isolation. after getting errands run he returned to work with he checked out the new ebola lab. tracking and documenting ebola patients is easier with a new app. smartphones will get into the hands of aid workers in west africa. we have the story. >> i landed here on the third day. and on friday we said, okay, we want to help. >> app developers phillip and his brother just moved from south africa to palo alto to do business. but what they have been doing the past month isn't make them any money. >> the biggest issue the aid

>> developing news out of colorado where authorities are looking for someone who shot a police officer during a traffic stop. in happened in the city of aurara east of denver. the first officer was taken to the hospital. there's no word on his condition. a strong undersea earthquake triggered a small tsunami in eastern india this morning. it did not cause any major damage following the 7.1 magnitude quake. the quake was strongly felt in several cities in the eastern part of the country but so far no reports of injuries. indonesia is prone to earthquakes do to their location on the pacific ring of fire and

the fault lines in the pacific basin. this morning officials in hawaii continue to monitor the lava flow that's been threatening one community. 2,000-degree river ever lava from the volcano has been inches toward the town since june 27th. video shows the lava burning through the fence yesterday. civil against and public safety workers are keeping watch on the lava flow around the clock. kilauea has been an active volcano since 1993. there have been no signals from the comet lander when they tried communication after it landed. the solar panels couldn't get enough sunlight to power their batteries after it land near a cliff. it was supposed to stay up longer. the next best move might be next year when the comet gets closer to the sun.

a flotation device for infants that has long been used in asia is starting to catch on in the u.s. too. a bay area woman is actually behind it. sportfishermen are reporting a lot of big crabs so far this year. a lost people are excited to get their hands on one. those crabs. >> certainly. it is the time of year. also, it's feeling pretty cool out there, lip in the north bay. some fog and temperatures near 40 there. it is a different story in san francisco but by the afternoon all of us will be really enjoying a partly sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 60s. so everyone kind of has the similar conditions throughout the afternoon, but this morning starting out quite differently. so low clouds and fog settling into the north bay valleys. here's a look at our sutro tower camera. see good visibility. it's 52 in mountain view. good morning san jose, 51. 50 half moon bay and about 54 in the city. overall it's a cooler start for just about everyone. emeryville this morning waking up to temperatures in the upper 40s. it's 41 in napa. that's where the fog is, as well as santa rosa. we are looking at fairfield at 45. 50 in livermore.

so this gives you an indication that it is cooler, especially in the north bay. 11 degrees cooler this morning compared to yesterday whereas much as the peninsula and parts of the south bay really not feeling too different out there. it is cloudy, though. mountain view and san jose. visibility has been reduced to about three quarters of a mile out toward the delta and napa. at about 5 miles right along the coast. exploratorium camera, another vantage point downtown. looks good out there, although we wish we could see more rain that. is in the outlook. first things first, though. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy in spots in morning. then we look for not only sunny condition this afternoon but it switches to an offshore component for the second half of the weekend. temperatures a little bit warmer tomorrow and then the rain comes in late tuesday into wednesday. and once again, not looking like really impressive system. so high pressure sits off the coast. that will allow for dry conditions. a few high clouds later on today, but overall this is what we are anticipating.

and with the cloud cover on tuesday, it will be cooler. tuesday night into wednesday here comes the next system. anywhere from .2 to maybe a third of an inch and then we dry out after that. highs today looking at numbers from about 62 up in point reyes, 64 san francisco. looking for mid-60s san mateo, and if you head inland, slightly warmer. partly cloudy skies, 68 in concord, 67 in san jose with mid-60s on the coast down toward santa cruz. so with that offshore flow not only for the bay area tomorrow, high fire danger returns for parts of southern california. it's only a short-lived event and by the time we get past the weekend we are looking at some increasing clouds. by tuesday highs still on the mild side, near 70 around the bay. but the rain comes our way tuesday night into wednesday and then look for more sun and clouds with seasonal temperatures thursday and friday. abc7 news has another great weather resource for you to follow. follow live doppler 7hd on

policyholders renew their coverage within the next month. and persuade hundreds of thousands more to sign up by february 15th. that's when the enrollment window closes again. this three month sign-up period is half the time of the first open enrollment. california expects 15% of their existing enroll lease will find coverage elsewhere or drop out all together. the band that prohibits gay men from donating blood in the u.s. may be loosened but not enough from satisfying all gay rights activists. an advisory committee has recommended allowing gay and bisexual men to donate blood if they have abstained from sex with men for at least one year. the ban was put in effect after 1983 when doctors realized the a.i.d.s. virus could be transmitted through blood transfusions. they say donors should be screened for risky behavior rather than sexual orientation. a final decision is expected on

december continued. san jose state university's president has announced the resignation of board member wanda ginner and vice president rebecca dukes. someone complained ginner made racist comments about latino students in february. dukes was included in the complaint because she was at the meeting and did not intervene. students found out about the comment and organized a protest on campus monday. the university is still looking over the results of an investigation into the incident. a former california highway patrol officer has pleaded not guilty to stealing and sharing semi nude cell phone pictures of women he arrested. our media partner, the bay area news group, shared this photo of sean harrington in the croom yesterday afternoon. harrington resigned from the patrol last week. investigators say he stopped a 23-year-old woman from dui, then went into her phone after she asked him to get a number for

her. he forward her personal photos to himself and other officers. he's facing a felony charge and more than three years in prison. a heads up for the people nook navigate the golden gate bridge in the new year. it would be closed january 10th and expected to be closed for about 52 hours to install a new barrier. it will reopen january 12th with the barrier in place. prep work for the barrier got underway for last week. officials say it's designed to prevent head-on collisions. the jack london square ferry terminal in oakland will be closed this weekend for refurbish meant. crews will build a new gangway and a security gate. you are encouraged to take the ferry from the almeda jack street terminal. it is expected to open in time for the monday morning commute. one year ago today

san francisco was preparing to become goth emcity. miles scott, a leukemia survivor would become bat kid and save the city. make a wish greater bay area made miles' wish snapped we have a clear picture that's come from the one wish being granted. here's abc7 news anchor ama daetz. >> pint-sized and packed with klunk, miles scott took goth emcity by storm when he saved the city from evildoers. the then five-year-old had spent much of his life battling leukemia. but on this day he instead fought off villains like the penguins and even rescued a damsel in distress. carefully orchestrated event brought approximately 20,000 people out to the streets of san francisco on friday, november caught, 2013. millions watched online and shared the event on social media. our city truly felt like the center of a very positive uplifting universe. now, a year later, the men who

delta. 45 for you in livermore checking in at 50. coolest numbers in the north bay from santa rosa to napa. here's a look at our 24 hour temperature change where we have the pockets of clear sky. it's much chillier in and around the north pay, but also some fog settling into the low-lying valleys. two degrees cooler, the san carlos airport. and overall it's napa where we are looking at some dense pockets of fog. five mile visibility on the coast and also by the delta. exploratorium camera this morning, temperatures in the 50s. this afternoon in the mid-60s downtown and the fog will lift. we have a dry pattern this weekend with an offshore flow taking shape by tomorrow. so it will be breezy in the sierra nevada, but overall for us maybe a degree or too warmer tomorrow afternoon. not a whole lot of change. the change comes our way on tuesday when the ridge breaks down and we are looking at a chance of showers late tuesday into wednesday. here's the pacific satellite picture we see the cloud cover offshore and it's going stay

there. some high clouds will infiltrate the ridge from time to time. but it is a dry weekend with temperatures fairly seasonal. right now it's in the 20s in the sierra nevada. 49 later on today in lake tahoe. 62 in the southern sierra and the offshore flow creating a high fire danger all the way down through san diego. los angeles 69 today. so here's a look at what we have to look forward to. 5:00 tuesday night we've got cloudy skies and rain is offshore. it moves in through the overnight hours. your wednesday morning will be wet. once again this looks like a fairly weak system with anywhere from .2 to perhaps a third of an inch. it pushes out of here by late wednesday. then we are dry thursday and friday. 53% of normal at the airport. we are just over an inch of rain. 54% of normal, not even an inch for mountain view. elsewhere we are looking at over an inch in san jose since the season started with 61% of normal. look at santa rosa.
