e people of san francisco thrive and succeed, we'll find it. that's the power of local connections. that's bank of america. flames rip through a century-old church in the south bay. smoke and flames powder from the holy cross parish church. we're going to take you live to the firefight right now. lillian kim nissan he -- is in san jose. >> several blocks in the area have been closed to traffic. this four alarm fire brought in 100 firefighters. they say it spread so fast there was no way to save the church.

holy cross parish church was completed in 1920. currently serves 600 families. the fire depth says the building is made of heavy timber chris why the flames spread quickly. crews went from offensive to defensive mode, meaning they're objective was to save the nearby area. no one was in the building when the fire broke out. the church has just finished mass. >> we had just finished 1:00 mass, and then close the church, and five minutes you could see the smoke, and then i went inside, i could see some fire, so when i turn off the electricity, and we call the fire company, the fire guys, and we are very sorry to see that property is a complete loss for our church. >> while the sanctuary was destroyed the rectory is okay.

the pastor wanted everybody to know that 6:00 mass is cancelled. >> the robbery capital of the nation is here in the bay area, with an average of one robbery for every 82 residents. federal numbers obtained by our media partner, the bay area news group, show oakland had nearly 5,000 robberies in 2013. that compares to just more than 4200 in san francisco, and nearly 1100 robberies in san jose. two bay area cities with more than double oakland's population. cornell bernard is live tonight with a look at what oakland plans to do to reduce the robberies. reporter: we talked to oakland's new mayor today. she calls these crime stats outrageous and has a plan to make oakland safer, but others aren't so sure. >> i do want to move back because i really feel like there's good here, but it's

becoming kind of scary also. >> rising crime in oakland sent her packing but she comes back for church on sundays, maybe not for long, though. >> a lady from my church was walking to church and a gun was pulled on her and they texas her money. >> this woman was robbed while shopping on grand avenue. >> i lost my wallet and phone. it set me back. it really set me back. >> new data shows robberies shot up to historic levels in last year. 201 was the worst year for robberies in decades. >> other. >> these crime numbers are completely unacceptable. >> the mayor elect is out of town but spoke to us by phone. she says crime bill be her top priority in office. she wants more cops on the street doing more community-based policing. >> we want to not only make sure that oaklanders are confident that a cop will come when they call, but we want to create an

environment where people make the decision to not commit crimes in the first place. >> people are out and about in droves. they're happy to be here, out on the streets-not scared to be out here. >> lake shore business improvement district director says don't for forget the good news. robberies are actually down by 36% compared to 2013. >> the stats tend to send people scurrying when the real reality is we're getting a handle on the crime. >> but drake still wants to see regular police officers assigned to shopping districts where crime can occur. in oakland, abc7 news. >> the san francisco 49ers got an unexpected visit from federal drug agents today. the 49ers were one of six teams questioned and inspected today. the team was not specifically targeted. it's part of an investigation into prescription drug abuse in the national football league. retired nfl players, including former 49er jeremy newberry are suing the league, claiming

medical staff routinely violate federal and said laws to help players continue playing after they get hurt. >> details on a hit-and-run case in napa county that is now a possible homocide investigation. the chp responded to report of a woman lying in the road. the victim described as a woman in her 50s died at the hospital later. it was initially considered a possible hit-and-run. but investigators now due to the rural area, the homocide task force has been called in to determine what happened. highway 29 its closed in both directions for the investigation. >> at least one person was stabbed during a fight at a soccer game in san francisco today. police were called to the crocker amazon playground around 1:30 this afternoon on the report of a large fight. officers found one person with a stab wound in their side. a possible second victim showed up at san francisco general

hospital with a slash wound on the neck. no word on what started the fight or if anyone has been arrived. the islamic terror group isis is claiming responsible for murdering another american. in a new familiar pattern they release eat group video apparently documenting the crime. this is the third time isis has executed an american hostage. here's the latest. >> the latest american victim of isis approve dality is peter kassig, 26-year-old aide worker from indiana. a former army ranger who served in iraq lived in the middle east where he founded a medical aid organization serving victims of the syrian civil war. >> are able to share a little bit of hope and comfort with some people. >> since his capture a year ago, kassig converted to islam and changed his name to abdul-rahman. isis showed their captive in a previous video, threatening to kill him in retaliation for u.s. military action in iraq and

syria: kassig's parents publicly pleaded with his cappers to spare their son, fellow muslim. >> we imblow those holding you to show mercy and use their power to let you go. >> yet in their new video isis shows kassig's purported execution 'er claiming to be in a syrian city with what appears to be kassig's severed head at his feet. he taunts president obama saying we are burying the first american crusader, eagerly waiting for the remainder of your armies to arrive. his parents say they want their son to be remembered for the love he shared with friends and family. in a letter to his parents smuggled out, peter kassig said if i do die, at least you and i can seek refuge and comfort knowing i went out as a result of trying to alleve yet suffering and helping those in need. abc news, washington, dc. >> the state department has taken the unprecedented step of shutting down its entire

new details on the super shuttle shortage in its second day at three major airports. officials say super shuttle is till not running at normal capacity and have asked other shuttle services to pick up the slack. the company's call center says a computer outage wiped out reassurer e sir vacations for sfo, oakland, and manetta. >> we don't know what occurred other than this apparent computer problem. right now we're just working to support our customers and hopefully they'll have these issues taken care of by tomorrow. >> abc7 news tried to contact super shuttle since yesterday but no one has spendded. >> some b.a.r.t. riders will start paying a new fee tomorrow.

beginning monday it will cost you a dollar a day to park at the coliseum oakland airport b.a.r.t. station. hayward will be the only station where parking is free but a dollar fee goes into effect there in december. b.a.r.t. says is has to charge to cover expenses for 400,000 readers a day. >> the ferry terminal at jack london square is scheduled to re-open tomorrow morning. it's been closed this weekend so crews could build a new gangway with an oning and repair and relocate a security gate. passengers have been using the alameda terminal. the upgrade is part of a $3 million renovation project. >> next, an update on breaking news. the church fire in san jose. also, sending a little love. the local effort to provide soldiers a piece of home this holy season. >> taking a live look outside, dry, mile weekend, but change is coming, including some rain. we'll fine out when

an update on the breaking news we brought you at the top of the newscast, that fire at holy cross parish in san jose, evening mass is cancelled after flames destroyed the church on east back andson street. the fire broke out around 2:30 this afternoon, just after mass. no one was inside. crews are on the scene as they launch an investigation into the cause. we'll have a live update for you at 6:00. soldiers overseas will soon be getting a little piece of home, hopefully in time for thanksgiving. more than 250 volunteers,

including service men and women, joined the 12th annual operation care and comfort event today at san jose municipal stadium. each helped sort, pack, and ship a variety of items like halloween candy, christmas stockings, mike row wavable meals and hygiene products for troops away from home. >> the troops oversees may not receive mail and the box wes slip may be the only thing they receive in a year. >> the candy, the goodies, stuff from home, it just comforts you when you're over there. >> volunteers get together once a month to create these care packages. organizers estimate today's massive effort resulted in more than 300 boxes at about 15,000-pound of goodies. if you're looking for a way to make a difference this holiday season, we invite you to help feed the hungry. abc7 news partnered with bay area food banks for the 23rd 23rd annual give where you live thanksgiving food drive.

supplying supplying the beautiful sunrise and the clouds above are giving us rain showers. live doppler 7hd, inland is dry but on the pacific we're tracking moisture. the showers are hitting a roadblock and that roadblock is dryer air over the bay area. so the showers are falling apart as they try move endland. akind of prepping our atmosphere so rain will reach the ground. a live like from east bay hills, the cloud cover still over us, and generally overcast skies throughout the overnight period. the forecast calls for frosty conditions-especially in the valleys. temperatures could possibly drop into the 30s. if you have sensitive vegetation, bring them inside. occasional sunshine on monday, and the first chance of rain is tuesday evening. the first chance because you have several chances. right now, temperature-wise, 60 outside, san francisco, 58, oakland. 58, san jose, napa, 58.

satellite and radar, what we're seeing, those clouds are streaming in from west to east so we'll have the clouds with us for our monday. but we're watching a large cloud cover. that's a cold front moving in tuesday night and wednesday, drop our temperatures and bring us in moisture with that front. so, the forecast as we go into monday afternoon, breaks of sunshine here and there but generally the rule is clouds dominate. then the rain starts build though west. by tuesday morning, we're dry. overcast skies, but the evening rush on tuesday, that's when we'll see the first sprinkles start to fall. generally in the north bay. then gets overreaching with heavier showers in cloverdale, santa rosa, and then by wednesday morning, wet one. grab the extra time and umbrella because we're looking at on and off periods of rain on wes. how much rain? generally .02 to .04 through the bay area. not be surprised to see isolated

pockets over half an inch of rain. we'll fine tune the forecast tuesday night and win. overnight, cool in the north bay, generally around 52 in san francisco, tomorrow, breaks of sunshine, and 66 in san francisco, 67 in richmond, 70, san jose. so, the accuweather seven-day forecast calls for breaks of sunshine. first chance of rain comes decision, and the second chance is wednesday morning and then a third chance saturday. so a good pattern with rain chances. >> great. a whole lot of green we haven't seen on live doppler 7hd in a while. >> yes. >> you're excited. >> i am. >> meteorologist's dream. >> yes. >> thanks, drew. >> doesn't take much. the raiders would win, that me dream. but they keep fining ways to lose game. they fell to 0-10 with the loss to san diego, and don't ask me how the 49ers are winning games.
