home. >> reporter: sheriffs identify anderson as the driver of a maroon saturn that sped through the intersection at east 14th and ashland near san leandro tuesday night. the car was traveling south in the northbound lane at high speed. just before it hit ivan, who was in the crosswalk riding a scooter. >> we spent considerable amount of time looking through all of the evidence, all of the reports, and today, we charge sonny joseph anderson with murder as well as multiple other felonies. >> we just wanted to say thank you to the community and to everyone who helped get this person off the street before he injured another innocent person. >> reporter: anderson will be arraigned tuesday afternoon in hayward. if convicted, he faces life in prison. ivan's funeral services are set for next tuesday in san leandro. laura anthony, abc 7 news.

sonny anderson's previous animal cruelty case, the one laura mentioned, involved a brutal attack on animals at the kennedy park petting zoo in hayward back in 1999. he was accused of mutilating a goat and pony and three other animals with a knife. some breaking news, authorities are asking for the public's help to find a kidnapped teenager. an amber alert was issued for 14-year-old sergio vazquez. investigators say he was abducted by two men in a white van in san andreas in east stockton. he is 5'10" tall, weighs about 170 pounds. he was last seen wearing a black teeshirt, jeans and black snow-type boots. investigators say the men may have taken him to the east bay or perhaps the sacramento area. police say a woman high on marijuana ran over an 84-year-old woman in san mateo and now they are asking for witnesses to please come forward. the accident happened at the walgreens parking lot on east third avenue last friday. abc 7 news reporter cornell

bernard is there now with more. >> reporter: that terrible accident happened at this very busy walgreens drive-through window on third avenue in san mateo. now, on friday, 21-year-old sonia toure was in line and also high on marijuana and possibly other drugs. when she suddenly changed her mind about being there, and backed her nissan mini van up quickly, striking 84-year-old nina foulk who was crossing the parking lot at the time. she died from her injuries saturday at the hospital. the suspect was arrested at the scene. neighbors around here are shocked. they say this parking lot can be very busy and very dangerous, no matter who is behind the wheel. >> you see it every day. they are distracted and not just on medication but the phone, whatever. >> it's devastating, especially for the community, to have a thing like that happen. hopefully they, you know, punish her really good for this and nobody else will do it.

make it a little more safer around here for the elderly. >> police say the suspect was arrested for felony dui. police are hoping to talk to anyone who may have witnessed this terrible accident on friday. live in san mateo, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> it is terrible. thanks very much. one person is dead after a car struck a pillar and another vehicle before catching fire in a san jose parking garage. it happened this morning just across the street from santa clara county superior court. firefighters say the driver was just not able to get out of that burning car. the fire spread to three other vehicles before it was finally put out. investigators are looking into whether the driver had a heart attack or some other medical emergency perhaps before the crash. firefighters were able to save a large cross that was in holy cross church in san jose. the church that was destroyed by a roaring fire on sunday. everyone is calling it amazing that the crucifix survived and you know what?

some are even calling it a miracle. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at the church now with the story. >> reporter: if you look at the church, it looks like it's destroyed but firefighters tell us that much of the foundation is still intact so it's possible to rebuild that church and that's exactly what the priests and parishioners want to do, because they have witnessed signs that tell them that this church will have a new life. it was an emotional moment for parishioners. >> we all believe in god and god is helping us, everybody. >> reporter: water from fire hoses dripping from the roof that caved in, like tears falling over the large crucifix still standing pristine, untouched by these flames that roared through this century old church on sunday. a fire so hot, it devoured the roof, collapsing the two spires. through it all, the cross survived.

>> we have been able to rescue the cross of jesus, jesus dead on the cross. this is an experience of jesus being dead for three days. >> reporter: today, fire crews carefully lifted the crew fix from the altar and brought it outside, resting it on the church driveway. it was a challenge and task the urban search and rescue team was called in to help. >> they have special knowledge in ropes and knots so they were able to get that cross secured and raised up very gently and set down to where it was safe. >> reporter: many, like catalina, saw this as prophetic. >> amazing that the cross is intact. that gives me a sign that he wants to be up there again. it is amazing. >> reporter: other sacred belongings of the church were saved. among them, statues of saints, bibles and hymnals. >> we save the holy oils which we are celebrate the sackmerame of holy oil.

>> reporter: even the fire captain said saving all this, especially the large cross, was more than amazing. some people call it a miracle. would you agree? >> i agree it is a miracle. absolutely. >> reporter: you know, on a personal note, if i may, i have been very fortunate to have seen that great mural by davinci the last supper when i visited milan, italy. incredibly, that last supper, that mural was the only thing that survived the church during world war ii when the church was bombed. i remember standing before it, looking at that mural intact and wondering just how it happened. so you know, i do understand how the priest and the parishioners felt when they saw unscathed by the fire. it was an emotional moment and i certainly understand that. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> absolutely. they have so much faith. we have to thank you so much for that story. another fire forced 15 people in berkeley to find a new

place to stay tonight. nobody was injured in the early morning fire that tore through a three story victorian home. investigators say the fire started near a heating vent. several people who lived here are uc berkeley students. the red cross is helping the victims. we are learning more about the bay area soldiers who will take part in an ebola support mission next spring. six members of a national guard intelligence unit based in san francisco will serve as interpreters and translators in west africa. none of the soldiers will provide direct medical care to ebola patients. they will be quarantined for three weeks upon their return. the soldiers are part of a 2100 strong u.s. force being deployed to fight the deadly ebola virus. ninth circuit court of appeals heard a challenge today of sunnyvale's gun law which makes it illegal to possess large capacity ammunition magazines, even in a home. gun owners say the ban is unconstitutional because it denies them the right to protect their homes from intruders. today an international animal rights group called for

improved equipment and safety procedures at the san francisco zoo after the death of a baby gorilla. 16 month old was crushed by a hydraulic door november 7th. it's automatic, and not designed to stop. the group in defense of animals issued a statement today calling those doors quote, inherently dangerous. they have asked the zoo to not use what it considers outdated and unsafe technology. frequent visitors to the zoo still upset by the loss of the young gorilla but hope it doesn't put the zoo in a negative light. >> you can tell it's an old zoo but i think they are doing a good job with what they have and making improvements. >> much of the zoo seems pretty old but it's, you know, there are some great parts of it and the animals seem well cared for. we always really love coming here. >> a gorilla expert is in san francisco investigating the cause of the death. dr. terry maples spent last night checking tout gorilla

structure and hydraulic door. researchers have figured out what is killing millions of sea stars along the pacific coast. cornell university scientists are blaming the deaths on a type of parvo virus. researchers began noticing the mystery disease last year which caused the sea stars to dissolve and their arms to fall off. experts say they believe the virus has been smoeldering at a low level for decades. it was spotted in museum samples as far back as 1942 and now has been coming to a head like this. still ahead tonight, the big push, the issue that has the bay area technology companies standing together. also, on defense, 49er coach jim harbaugh reacts to the new trouble for the nfl. federal drug agents launching surprise raids. i'm michael finney live in the 7 on your side office, where our affordable care act hotline is well under way. give us a call. we will be here until 8:00. 415-954-7621.

scan cares. - i don't know a better way to say it than, the heart of scan. - scan, for your health and independence. sdz one day after federal drug enforcement agents conducted surprise inspections on the 49ers and three other nfl teams, head coach jim harbaugh insists his team is an open book when it comes to how it handles painkillers and other team medication. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is live at 49ers headquarters in santa clara tonight with the story. wayne? >> reporter: good evening. it's been a bad year for the nfl in terms of image. if the nfl had its way, teams would talk about games and

players, not possible drug problems. the 49ers find themselves right in the middle of this. we had to ask jim harbaugh about it today at his press conference. >> i don't know anything about it. i don't know. i have no idea. i don't know anything about it. >> reporter: for a coach with all the answers about xs and os, this was unfamiliar territory. jim harbaugh and the san francisco 49ers entered that territory yesterday afternoon following their victory over the new york giants. federal drug enforcement agents went through the players' bags and medical supplies looking for abuse or mishandling of prescription drugs by nfl teams. here's 49ers spokesman bob lang yesterday. >> they are random checks to team physicians as they travel to see if anybody is transferring controlled substances across state lines. that's all the information we have. >> reporter: if there's smoke, could there be fire? the niners say absolutely not. >> all medications are documented, to my knowledge. any medication that we have,

those are checked. >> reporter: the inspections may stem from a lawsuit filed on behalf of 1200 members of the nfl players association. they include former 49er and raider jeremy newbury. that suit claims teams handed out pain killers quote, like candy at halloween, leading to addiction, and health issues. what may be most interesting is the dea is turning its attention from performance-enhancing drugs to painkillers. here's paula canny, a defense attorney who fought the fedz in t the falco case. >> it's the beginning of better regulated treatment of professional athletes. >> reporter: assuming there is any mistreatment at all. is it expected by a player to do that, take that stuff? >> no, there's no expectation of that. >> reporter: is it suggested to a player and he doesn't take it, what's the response? >> it's not suggested.

>> reporter: as to what the drug enforcement agents did or did not find yesterday, unknown. from santa clara, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. many of the world's largest tech companies have put pressure on congress to pass surveillance reform. google, apple, twitter and microsoft issued a letter to the senate today urging support of the usa freedom act. the letter said the act would prevent the bulk collection of internet metadata and make the government's demands for user information a lot more transparent. here's a look at the letter that was submitted. the tech giants said the act does not go far enough. they want to prevent data requests without a proper legal process. open enrollment is under way for health insurance coverage under the affordable care act or obamacare, and 7 on your side's michael finney is standing by our phone bank with a panel of experts ready to take your calls. i know a lot of people have a lot of questions about this. >> boy, they do. they are busy here. as you said, this year you only get three months to sign up from october 15th to february 15th.

livermore in the 50s. santa rosa, 60 degrees. as we take a look at a gorgeous view looking toward telegraph hill, chilly for inland valleys tonight. high clouds and sunshine tomorrow with chances of rain. wednesday through saturday. let's take a look at the first opportunity for rain. satellite radar showing you the cold front that's working its way towards us. we are seeing all these clouds out ahead of it but the problem is we have this dome of dry air keeping the rain away for now. here's what's going to happen. we need some time to moisten up the atmosphere so tomorrow, look for high clouds throughout the day. we will call it increasing cloudiness leading up to a chance of some showers in the north bay wednesday morning during the commute. then afternoon, evening, we could see some spotty light showers across the rest of the bay area. we are looking at another chance of some more rain coming in on thursday, so as you take a look at the rain totals for the wednesday system, up to a quarter inch in the north bay, most of the rest of the area,

a united airlines flight bound for san francisco blew a tire on takeoff from washington's dulles international airport late this afternoon. an airline spokesperson says united flight 1564 circled back to dulles and landed safely, but the boeing 757 aircraft could not taxi back to the gate because of mechanical problems. emergency vehicles surrounded the plane as it sat on the runway. the passengers were taken off the plane and the airport had to close the runway. san francisco-based square is partnering with snapchat so people can pay friends through that app. the payment system is called snap cash. snap cash lets you message cash to friends once you entered your debit card. all the transactions are handled
