this is the deadliest attack in jerusalem in years. four people killed. israeli police now confirming three are american citizens and one brit. this comes as tensions are sky high. the fact that this took place in a synagogue where ultra orthodox people were praying is fueling the fears of a religious war. just after 8:00 this morning, surrounding a synagogue after shots rang out. >> we were coming into the synagogue. and we heard gunshots from downstairs. we heard one shot, two shots, then a flurry of shots. at least five or six or seven shots. >> reporter: four worshippers dead at the hands of two palestinian attackers. armed with axes, knives, and a pistol. minutes after the rampage started, the attackers, cousins from east jerusalem were shot dead by police. >> an act of pure terror and senseless brutality and murder. >> reporter: the attack comes amidst the worst tension in the city in years.

centered around the mosque on a site that's one of the holiest places in both islam and judaism. palestinians accuse israelis of provocations. and they say they have been inciting religious violence, which has led to several recent deadly attacks against israelis. no palestinian group claimed responsibility, but hamas applauded the attack. calling it a quality development in confrontation with israeli occupation. palestinian president mahmoud abbas condemned the attack, but he also accused israel of inciting violence. prime minister benjamin netanyahu called an emergency security meeting and has vowed, as he says, to respond with a heavy hand to the brutal murder of jews who came to pray. >> thank you. and freeze warnings from

[ sirens blaring ] the warning citing recent intelligence causing concern, including threatening messages. november 9th, an unidentified black separatist group offered a $5,000 bounty for officer

wilson's location on a social media site. four days earlier, a georgia police officer receives a pamphlet saying, keep calm and kill cops, clearly referencing the brown shooting. and there may be cyber attacks against police, posting their personal information and shutting down computer networks. so a state of emergency declared, the national guard on stand-by, and this new warning from the fbi. you can see why they're also planning to close schools in ferguson once that decision comes down. robin? >> totally understandable. all right, pierre, thank you. now to the desperate hunt for the isis terrorists holding an american woman hostage. the latest brutal video may offer important clues about her fate. and abc's brian ross is staying on top of this, has the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. u.s. officials are holding out hope that isis will treat the last american hostage, that 26-year-old woman, differently than peter kassig and the two

other american hostages that were beheaded. it is significant that the latest isis video for the shocking images does not show the young american woman being paraded in front of cameras. the woman who went to syria as an aid worker, was captured more than a year ago. because of the sensitive of the situation, her family asked we not identify her by name. but her plight is known to the parents peter kassig, ed and paula. and as they asked for prayers for their murdered son on monday, they make a clear reference to the other isis hostages. >> pray for all people in syria and iraq and around the world that are held against their will. >> reporter: isis had ignored the kassigs' pleas for mercy. but they say they'll try to forgive them. >> our hearts are battered. but they will mend. the world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. >> please allow our small family the time and privacy to mourn, cry, and, yes, forgive. >> reporter: but for u.s. officials, there is no forgiveness for isis.

problems, and as you're about to hear, he tried to return to midway shortly after takeoff. >> i'd like to come back and land. i'm having trouble with the left engine. >> you are clear to land. you still with me? >> he went down. >> he did not make it to the field. it looks like he just went down just short of 31 center. >> and that's right. the plane down just blocks from the airport. sadly, the pilot did not survive. the top boss in the u.s. air force said every job open to men will soon be open to women, as well. secretary debra lee james said that women are currently barred from seven positions, including some in combat, which employ 4600 people. she says the air force is now developing standards to make all those jobs gender neutral over the next year and a half. and an update on the jewelry heist in new york city's famous diamond district. the robbery was apparently an inside job. police have arrested an employee of that jewelry store. but the two robbers are still at large. so far so are the half a million dollars worth of jewels they stole.
