this is the deadliest attack in jerusalem in years. four people killed. israeli police now confirming three are american citizens and one brit. this comes as tensions are sky high. the fact that this took place in a synagogue where ultra orthodox people were praying is fueling the fears of a religious war. just after 8:00 this morning, surrounding a synagogue after shots rang out. >> we were coming into the synagogue. and we heard gunshots from downstairs. we heard one shot, two shots, then a flurry of shots. at least five or six or seven shots. >> reporter: four worshippers dead at the hands of two palestinian attackers. armed with axes, knives, and a pistol. minutes after the rampage started, the attackers, cousins from east jerusalem were shot dead by police. >> an act of pure terror and senseless brutality and murder. >> reporter: the attack comes amidst the worst tension in the city in years.

centered around the mosque on a site that's one of the holiest places in both islam and judaism. palestinians accuse israelis of provocations. and they say they have been inciting religious violence, which has led to several recent deadly attacks against israelis. no palestinian group claimed responsibility, but hamas applauded the attack. calling it a quality development in confrontation with israeli occupation. palestinian president mahmoud abbas condemned the attack, but he also accused israel of inciting violence. prime minister benjamin netanyahu called an emergency security meeting and has vowed, as he says, to respond with a heavy hand to the brutal murder of jews who came to pray. >> thank you. and freeze warnings from

overnight, record snow and whipping winds. plunging much of the country into a virtual whiteout. 50% of the country blanketed in snow. to put it in perspective, on the average christmas day, usually only 33% of the states are covered. in grand rapids, michigan, harsh, near-zero windchills and intense lake-effect snow making it almost impossible to see the icy, dangerous roads. snow up to a foot high. in buffalo, new york, 3 inches an hour, making for a dangerous and unpredictable drive. and i just want you to take a look. the winds have really picked up. whiteout conditions as we're driving. this isn't going to be easy. and look at this, icy conditions in oklahoma forcing this semi truck off the road, where it jackknifed into the barrier. the cab away from the vehicle. this ambulance in kentucky, rolling over multiple times. two members of the crew

hijack peaceful protests around the country. and the mayor has called a state of emergency. pierre thomas is tracking it all from washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, that's right. today the fbi is concerned that agitators will use crowds of peaceful protesters as cover to incite violence. worried about the violence past, and with new intelligence coming in, the fbi sent a bulletin to police across the country. warning that violent individuals will likely try to exploit peaceful protests and attack law enforcement in ferguson and possibly nationwide. according to the bulletin, suspects could be armed with knives and guns and tactical gear like tear gas masks and bullet-proof vests. [ sirens blaring ] the warning citing recent intelligence causing concern, including threatening messages. november 9th, an unidentified black separatist group offered a $5,000 bounty for officer

wilson's location on a social media site. four days earlier, a georgia police officer receives a pamphlet saying, keep calm and kill cops, clearly referencing the brown shooting. and there may be cyber attacks against police, posting their personal information and shutting down computer networks. so a state of emergency declared, the national guard on stand-by, and this new warning from the fbi. you can see why they're also planning to close schools in ferguson once that decision comes down. robin? >> totally understandable. all right, pierre, thank you. now to the desperate hunt for the isis terrorists holding an american woman hostage. the latest brutal video may offer important clues about her fate. and abc's brian ross is staying on top of this, has the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. u.s. officials are holding out hope that isis will treat the last american hostage, that 26-year-old woman, differently than peter kassig and the two

other american hostages that were beheaded. it is significant that the latest isis video for the shocking images does not show the young american woman being paraded in front of cameras. the woman who went to syria as an aid worker, was captured more than a year ago. because of the sensitive of the situation, her family asked we not identify her by name. but her plight is known to the parents peter kassig, ed and paula. and as they asked for prayers for their murdered son on monday, they make a clear reference to the other isis hostages. >> pray for all people in syria and iraq and around the world that are held against their will. >> reporter: isis had ignored the kassigs' pleas for mercy. but they say they'll try to forgive them. >> our hearts are battered. but they will mend. the world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. >> please allow our small family the time and privacy to mourn, cry, and, yes, forgive. >> reporter: but for u.s. officials, there is no forgiveness for isis.

air strikes, they say, continue to target with increasing precision, top leadership. the inclusion of the unmasked faces in the latest isis video allowed french authorities to identify one of them as a 22-year-old french citizen. and a large team is now dedicated to tracking down and killing or capturing the masked executioner who has prestided over the murders, now, of three americans. >> every effort is being made to identify him and find where he's located. it's absolutely essential we bring this individual to justice. >> reporter: overnight the white house revealed that president obama ordered a full-scale review of the american policy with hostages. it comes by sharp criticism of the families who claimed that the government did not do enough to prevept their -- to prevent their sons from being murdered by isis. >> thank you. and health news now, an aspirin a day may not help as much as we thought.

any benefits may be offset by risks. dr. richard besser is here. this challenges conventional wisdom. >> it was. this is a very important study. it's a large study out of japan. more than 14,000 people who never had a heart attack but were at risk for heart disease. they gave half a low dose of aspirin and half not. they found that the aspirin failed to prevent deaths from heart disease. there were fewer heart attacks, but it was offset by a significant amount of bleeding. the conclusion is for this group of people, aspirin probably not worth it. >> so many of us have the doctors say take an aspirin a day. what should we do? >> anyone who's had a heart attack before, aspirin is indicated, it saves lives. and another group of people at a greatly increased risk for heart disease, so don't stop your aspirin without talking to your doctor. for many people at low risk, aspirin probably won't be the way to go. >> and news of new benefits

for anti-statin drugs. >> these are drugs called vytorin and zetia. these were added to the regimen of people on statins who needed lower cholesterol. and adding the drugs reduced the chances of a fatal or severe heart attack by 6%. it's the first study to show that. other studies showed it lowers cholesterol. this one shows it really works. >> so a double benefit. thanks very much. and amy with the other top stories. >> good morning. a terrifying scene in chicago right now. a small plane crashing right into that house overnight. the twin engine cargo plane slamming through the roof of the home shortly after taking off from midway airport around 3:00 a.m. the pilot reported engine trouble. two people inside the house were rescued. they were not injured. but the pilot's condition remains unknown at this hour. crews are making sure there is no gas spilled. we will have more information as it becomes available. and a showdown on capitol

hill. the senate is expected to vote on the controversial keystone oil pipeline. all 45 republicans as well as 14 democrats and independents are expected to approve the project. that leaves them scrambling for one more vote. it's unclear with the president will go along. he denied claims that the project will be a major job creator. and with oil production booming, gas prices are dropping once again. falling another five cents in the last week. prices at the pump this thanksgiving will be the lowest in five years. and forget gas. toyota says next year, it will sell a car that runs on hydro general. it claims the car can travel 300 mile on a single tank emitting only water vapor. it will cost about $60,000. a legal case in california is making history. a rapper could face life in prison because prosecutors claim his lyrics promote gang violence.

brandon duncan, aka tiny do, is facing attempted murder charges in connection with nine shootings, even though he's not directly linked to the violence. he doesn't even have a criminal record. but prosecutors are citing a little-known state law claiming duncan with the charged because he benefitted from the violence. the shootings raised the gang's profile, helping him sell albums. his lawyer says it's a violation of free speech. the nfl star accused of child abuse has been suspended for the rest of the season. adrian peterson pleaded no contest on the charges. he says he was disciplining his son with a switch. he can appeal. finally, calling all daredevils. would you take a ride on this? it's called the skyscraper. it's being built in orlando and will be the world's tallest roller coaster. taking you more than 500 feet into the sky before dropping you to earth through endless
