making news in america this morning -- breaking overnight, shots ring out on the campus of florida state university. students in the library barricading doors as the s.w.a.t. team moves in. we have the very latest. bracing for round two with the second wave of a monster storm. snow falling again in western new york, adding to the feet of snow as icy temperatures settle in for others. new this morning, an on-camera exchange between a reporter and bill cosby sitting next to his wife. the comments made by the embattled comic getting a lot of attention this morning. and second choice? chris hemsworth was named sexiest man alive but did someone else turn it down more than once?

good thursday morning, i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. and we begin with the breaking news, a shooting incident in the middle of florida state university's campus in tallahassee. >> took place inside and around the school's library just after midnight. the library's quiet shattered by gunfire. >> there has been a shooting in the library. stay where you are. >> that's what fsu students huddled among library shelves heard from police speaking over the intercom. >> if anybody has a victim, if anybody has been shot, call 911 on your cell phone. >> at least three people had been shot, wounded and taken to a nearby hospital. photos posted online show the dramatic scene. students, hands raised as a s.w.a.t team enters an officer armed with a rifle in the lobby. a makeshift barricade, tables overturned, blocking a second floor door. >> whole commotion, total chaos.

>> florida state shooter, guillermo page was in the libra library. >> people started yelling about a shooter. basically we were told to gather all of our stuff, not even told, it was just like screamed. we ran upstairs. by the time we got up to the third floor, we heard another six or seven shots in quick succession outside the building. >> police flooded the campus, engaged the gunman who was killed. still no one was taking any chances. clearing students one by one from inside the library. taken to another building and interviewed by authorities. much of their belongings left behind. fsu says all classes have been canceled for this morning. but the library will be closed. we will have updates and a full report on "good morning america." also on, phil nickels has died. having been married to diane sawyer for 26 years. he's one of the most successful movie directors in history for films like "the graduate." he was also a prolific broadway

director. mike nickels was 83 years old. now to the snow. western new york getting hammered again by another round of heavy snow. give you a bird's eye view of buffalo, where some areas could see a total of eight feet of snow. the storm is being blamed for at least seven deaths and the cleanup is expected to drag into next week. our coverage begins now with abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: overnight, round two. a second wave of heavy lake effect snow started falling in western new york. buffalo is getting pummelled, snow is piling high and breaking doors. >> winter knocked and let itself in. >> reporter: by friday the area could get 8 feet of snow. >> i believe when it's all said and done, this snowfall may break all sorts of records. >> reporter: at least seven people have been killed. hundreds trapped on highways. but this morning thanks to help from the national guard, officials say everyone is now safe. including the niagara women's basketball team. caitlyn bataliia was also stuck

on the highway for over 30 hours. >> no food, no water. literally surrounded by about, you know, 4 to 5 feet of snow. >> reporter: the city is trying to dig out even as the snow continues. the buffalo bills are offering $10 an hour plus game tickets for anyone who can help shovel at the stadium ahead of sunday's game. shovels are out in other parts of new york, but it could take days to clear the snow. >> running out of snacks and drinks. just trying to survive right now. >> reporter: from wisconsin to michigan, millions are buried in snow. >> it's cold. it's crazy. it's fun. once you get used to it, i'm sure we all like it, but ready for it to be done. >> reporter: the rest of the country is still coping with brutally cold temperatures. more than a dozen record lows tied or broken from the gulf coast to new england. but there's good news, warmer weather is on the way. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> but that warmer weather is not moving in just yet. it looks like things will get a lot worse before they get better. >> and accuweather meteorologist jim dickey is tracking it all. good morning, jim. good morning reena and t.j.

now to round two of lake effect snow for the buffalo area. winds picking up once again, allowing the band to form. it will drift its way southward here through the day. but under the band, whiteout conditions. snowfall rates, 5 inches an hour. an additional 1 to 2 feet in addition to what's on the ground. and across the great lakes, holding on to that lake effect snow. downwind of the lake, 6 to 12 inches. locally up to 2 feet. reena and t.j., back to you. >> all right, thank you so much. president obama heads for a showdown with republicans in congress as he prepares to speak to the nation tonight on immigration. the white house photo you're seeing here showing him huddled with staff, working on the plan to allow up to 5 million illegal immigrants to remain in the country. abc's devin dwyer with the preview. >> reporter: for millions of american immigrants, today's announcement could be life-changing. >> we have a lot of children suffering as a result of this deportation. >> reporter: after years of

inaction, president obama will offer temporary legal status and work permits to up to 5 million undocumented immigrants. >> everybody agrees that our immigration system is broken. >> reporter: sources familiar with the president's plan tell abc news that the focus is on keeping families united. lifting the threat of deportation from students who came to the u.s. as children and undocumented parents of kids who were born here. >> all of a sudden they could be separated from you because i'm here and this is my home, but they're not legal. >> reporter: it may be welcome relief, but it's only temporary and does not include a pathway to citizenship or access to federal health care benefits. the president's plan is expected to include more visas for high-skilled workers and beefed up security along the southwest border. in the latest abc news/"washington post" poll, a majority of americans support the presidential action on immigration. >> and the country is going to go nuts. >> reporter: congressional

republicans warn the president's move could spark violence. >> hopefully not. but you could see instances of anarchy. >> reporter: for now both sides waiting to hear directly from the president. preparing to raise their voices in the streets and in the courts. devin dwyer, abc news, the white house. there's been another alarming incident near the white house. the secret service arrested a 41-year-old iowa man one block away after a search of his car uncovered a rifle and ammunition. the man told officers someone in iowa told me to go to the white house. since he made no threats, the man is charged only with having an unregistered gun. both the fbi and the faa are investigating recent scares when pilot saw drones flying too close to the planes. two incidents at jfk. st. louis county, 9 white, 3 black, the grand jury for fwroun, the family said the system favors officer darren

well, people around buffalo, new york, could be snowed in for days as you can see from these drone images. and they're getting slammed this morning with up to 2 feet of additional snow. and a total 8 feet could be on the ground by the time it's over. could take to next week to clear roads. and that storm is creating whiteout conditions and treacherous roads into michigan. a slick commute across south florida. wet highways in the northern rockies. and recapping the breaking news, chaotic scene this is morning at florida state university where a gunman wounded at least three people. it happened at the library just after midnight. >> police shot and killed the gunman after the suspect shot at them. the school says the campus has been secured and classes will be held this morning. now i want to turn to the newly released interview with bill cosby, reacting to questions about recent sex abuse claims. >> coming as two more cosby projects are canceled, and

a lie. but his attempted comeback is faltering. nbc is scrapping a sitcom, and tv land pulling the cosby show off the air. but the show will go on tomorrow for his sold out comedy performance in florida. a former district attorney in pennsylvania who investigates one of the sex vault claims said cosby got away with it because there was not enough evidence. and bono is more seriously injured than we thought after a bicycle injury in new york. an orthopedic trauma surgeon said he had multiple fractures to his eye socket and left shoulder. they inserted metal plates and 18 screws into his arm with a bone went through the skin, breaking into six pieces. and in honduras, they have arrested two men for the murder of the reigning miss honduras and her sister. the bodies of jose maria alva ray doe, seen there, and her sister, were found buries near

a spa where they had been celebrating her boyfriend's birthday next week. he confessed to shooting both women in a jealous rage after seeing her dancing with another man. and health insurance, baby reese was born while her parents were vacationing in hawaii. she spent two months in intensive care for $950,000. reese's mom bought insurance from blue cross and got the okay from her doctor before traveling. but blue cross is refusing to pay one penny. >> it makes you sick to your stomach. who can pay a million dollar medical bill? who can afford that? >> blue cross argues the mom had a pre-existing condition not covered by the policy. but they insist even the fine print said nothing about pre-existing conditions. and now they may have to declare bankruptcy. well, it's time for week 12 in the nfl. kicking off tonight with the chiefs visiting the winless raiders. and last night's nba highlights, the guys from espn.

have reduced visibility. so far, no big issues. >> this morning, happening right now, angry cal students are staging an all-night sit in to protest a vote on a series of tuition hikes. tensions boiled identify yesterday leading to a scuffle. amy hollyfield is at cal with more. they protesting at wheeler hall. they have a good crowd. they lost a few people overnight but people are filling the lobby. there is a rome -- room where it is dark where you can sleep. some are sleeping. some are studying. they hope to make a power of statement. last night this iswhat it looked like when it started. it was nice. calm. democratic. they voted to declare what their demands are. the main demand is the uc regents reject tuition hikes

with the proposal to increase tuition 5 percent each year for five years. >> this is not just the fight for us but public education for the future and the 12-year-old kids at him who have no power. either the student has a riff to protest this which is why i need to. that is how a lot people feel. >> the land is to continue the sit in until their demands are met. the uc regents are set to vote today on the tuition hike, a key committee for the competent voting to support the hikes and today the full before votes. what are the constitutes going to do after the vote? they have not reached this point they are taking it on a minute by minute basis and for now they will continue the sit in. we will watch this
