that's when he met the woman who would change everything. spirited, hilarious, beloved. father, grandfather and husband. it has been said by many that sitting next to mike nichols at a dinner table was like winning the lottery. his genius, his laughter, his heart. and diane and mike enjoyed entertaining. when you were in their home. and you often ended up on the floor and looking up at mike. his humor, his intellect, the stories. and i would watch diane watching mike. and she would always say to me, that's my guy. >> oh. >> that's my guy. yeah. >> it is incredible. but picking up on what you say, you feel smarter and funnier just being next to him. an incredible, incredible man. and, boy, what a career. >> what a career and so generous. just -- and would talk about anything with you. i remember on "gma" way back when, we would say what's your favorite place to be? we would say, locations, wearing one of mike's warm shirts and

sitting on his lap. that's a true love story. he knew what was important most, his family. >> never stopped working either. was working on "masterclass" with meryl streep. that was going to be for hbo. i love what the famous playwright said about mike nichols. he called him the best of america. he improves every signing hour and brightens the dark ones. >> yes. as does diane. >> we're thinking of you diane. we're glad you have your beautiful family surrounding you. >> all our love to you. we are going to move on now. ginger that blast of cold air, hitting so much of the country. >> not just the places we have been seeing the incredible pictures from, buffalo, new york. but look at this, this photo from atlanta. we're talking freezing all the way down into the southeast. that frozen fountain grabs your attention and says, wait, this is not just the north. no, records broken this morning from jacksonville to tallahassee. freeze warnings down to almost central florida.

the numbers are cold from portland, oregon, to rapid city, windchill in chicago is 4. yes, there's more snow to come in the great lakes. and that includes west michigan to our friends in buffalo. that is where we find our gio benitez again this morning. gio, how's it going? >> reporter: oh, well, for the first time in three days, ginger, i can see the camera. here's that headline, here we go again. overnight, we saw lightning, there was thunder, there was freezing fog. and just as we come on the air this morning, word that an eighth person has died because of these storms. this morning, another round of heavy snow pounding the northeast. south buffalo slammed, tow trucks going in to rescue stuck cars and getting stuck themselves. hard hits of lightning and loud thunder snow shaking the city. booming warnings that this arctic blast is not over yet. just this week alone the buffalo area expected to reach similar amounts of snow to what is

usually the total for the whole year. >> it's going to get, in some ways, worse before it gets better. but when we say stay home, really, stay home. >> reporter: leaving the house, not a choice for many. this garage door opening to a blanket of snow. cars lost under the massive mounds of white. somewhere under here there's a car. it is way down there. the roads still a mess. hundreds of cars left abandoned on those snow-clogged highways. officials saying it could take days to clear them. the main road to the hospital, snowed in for hours. this baby girl taking her first breath inside a fire station after the snow made it impossible for her mother to get to the hospital. snowmobiles, becoming the main means of transportation for emergency personnel. so this is the hardest hit region. this is the only way into south buffalo. look at all the cars here. residents working to clean the damage and start digging out. the buffalo bills racing to

shovel the 220,000 tons of snow covering ralph wilson stadium in time for sunday's game, even offering $10 an hour and free game tickets for volunteers. and right now there is another massive snowstorm over parts south of here. but the roads are so treacherous, not even we can get there. >> be safe. thanks so much. now to the news breaking overnight. a shooting on the florida state campus. three students wounded, the shooter was killed in the showdown. abc's reena ninan is here with the latest for us. >> good morning, 300 to 400 students packed inside that library. and the chaos and uncertainty. students told to hide. some students leaving behind farewell messages to their families on white boards in the library. a daughter texting her father, there's a man with a gun in the library, i love you. all these students just hours ago, unsure of what to expect. >> there has been a shooting in the library. >> reporter: overnight a terrifying scene on the campus of florida state university.

students huddled in the library on lockdown after gunshots are fired. >> if anybody has been shot call 911. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: three people injured in the gunfire. one in critical condition after police say the shooter, acting alone, opened fire overnight. senior alex levine took this dramatic video from inside the locked down library. >> it was very stressed. everybody was traumatized. crying. >> reporter: it began around 12:30 a.m. the university putting out this alert online. warning students of a dangerous situation and to seek shelter. guillermo page, a junior, was in the starbucks, located in the lobby of the library when he said chaos erupted nearby. >> there was total commotion and chaos, people yelling about a shooter. >> reporter: page said at least 30 to 40 students were huddled around him, waiting for an hour,

unsure of the shooter's location. one student recalled seeing the shooter just moments before. >> a kid who was up with me, he told me he walked past the shooter. he said it was a 6-foot tall man with a red sweater. he saw him walk right by him, he saw him pull out his gun, and that's when he ran upstairs. >> >> reporter: police flooding the scene, securing the building. >> he was challenged by the officers. to drop the weapon. >> reporter: less than an hour later, authorities confirming the shooter was killed by police. >> all of a sudden, 20 cop cars surrounding the library, and then they started screaming, like, put the weapon down, put the gun down, and they probably shot him 20 to 30 times. >> reporter: university officials say all three victims were students. classes are cancelled. while police believe this was an isolated incident, campus security will be stepped up today. >> no doubt. >> thank you. we move now to new concerns about safety in the skies. alarming reports from one of the nation's busiest airports. pilots spotting unmanned drones flying too close to their jets as they prepare to land. david kerley has the story. >> reporter: less than 24 hours

ago, a jetblue on final approach in new york's busy air space, sees something. >> about two miles out on the final, maybe around 400 to 300 feet. looks like one of those unmanned drones flying right on the final. >> two mile final, 3-400 feet? >> that's right. >> reporter: the second sighting of a drone at jfk in two days. sunday's, involving two jets was even closer. >> we had something over us, a drone or a balloon. it just came real quick. >> yeah, i'm not showing anything over there. >> reporter: that's a virgin atlantic 747, about ten miles from the airport, at 8:00 at night, preparing to land, seeing the drone flying above 2,000 feet, far above the legal level. then one minute later, a delta 737 says a drone misses its wing by just one foot, a foot. none of these aircraft had to take evasive action, all landed safely.

but this is part of an alarming trend of drones that cost a couple of hundred dollars flying illegally in the air space of multi-million dollar aircraft carrying passengers. >> if you fly things with significant weight, two, three, four pounds, near an airplane, it's very vul early as they come in on final approach. >> reporter: the faa is researching and writing new rules, but their explosive growth is far ahead that have rule-making. and those flying these small drones are playing a dangerous game at times. >> people are being incredibly irresponsible by flying these drones anywhere near where there might be airplanes. >> reporter: we first reported this past summer about this new program asking pilots to report these close encounters. there's an faa and fbi task force to look into these. but so far, they haven't been able to stop. drones getting too close to passenger planes. >> they might have to take more action. thanks very much. we move now to the battle over immigration. president obama set to announce his plans tonight. an executive order granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants.

critics already calling it presidential overreach. they are planning to fight it in congress and the courts. jon karl has the latest from the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president will announce this with a primetime address tonight. granting legal status to up to 5 million people in the united states right now illegally. republicans saying the president does not have the legal authority to do that. so, they are already preparing to go to court to try to stop him there. and you can expect that the new republican-dominated congress will try to stop him through legislation. and george, ted cruz, the senator that led the way to the shutdown two years ago said they should block all of the president's nominees until this is undone. but what's interesting here, george, you don't hear anybody, not even ted cruz, threatening a shutdown over it. >> that's one thing off the table. one thing on the table, jon karl, it appears overnight, we have our first official presidential candidate, 2016. >> that's right. we have jim web, the former senator from virginia.

he announced that he is going to launch a presidential exploratory committee. he's a democrat and served under ronald reagan. as a navy secretary. he is a vietnam veteran. he is a serious political figure. but, george, he will certainly be a longshot for the democratic nomination. >> hillary clinton the front runner right now. thank you very much. to amy with the top stories. good morning. we begin with the new showdown over those exploding air bags blamed for at least five deaths and millions of recalled cars. today lawmakers on capitol hill are expecting to grill executives from takata. the air bag manufacturer is resisting calls to expand that recall nationwide, insisting only cars with states with high humidity are affected. the company is accused of using a cheaper propellant despite engineer's safety concerns. and one of america's most popular vehicles, the minivan anyway may not be as safe as you think. front crash tests revealed overnight show make percent

structural damage. the nissan quest, dodge caravan and chrysler town and country all scored the lowest rating. the toyota sienna was rated acceptable. the honda odyssey rated best overall. also, breaking overnight, tensions flaring in ferguson, missouri, as anxious residents await the grand jury decision in the michael brown shooting case. six protesters were arrested for trying to block a street while demanding police officer darren wilson be indicted. and the secret service arrested an iowa man acting oddly one block from the white house. agents says man, who claims someone had told him to go to the white house, had a rifle and ammunition in his car, but since he made no specific threat, he's charged only with having an unregistered gun. in the wake of recent security breaches, the secret service is considering make the fence taller. one congressman suggested digging a mote might be a better idea. a texas man faces 25 years

in prison after he was caught on this police dash cam crashing into a patrol car. he then tries to get away after injuring an officer. the officer fired more than a dozen rounds to stop the suspect before backup arrived to eventually cuff, wow, that passenger. another airline is raising fees and reducing leg room. jetblue says beginning next year, they'll charge some passengers bag fees, leaving southwest as the only carrier that lets you check your bags for free. jetblue is also adding seats to planes in the hopes of raising more cash. and finally, meet the grizzly bear with a budding career in photography. he spotted a man taking pictures in canada and you can see, he decided to see what all the fuss was about looking through the lens. and just in case this photo doesn't look real, there's actual video to prove that really happened. the bear walking up along the road, sniffing around. and then, yes, standing up. here he goes, perfect posture,

anywhere. >> okay. i appreciate what you've asked. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> and we thought, by the way, because it was ap -- >> uh-huh. >> -- that it wouldn't be necessary to go over that question with you. >> i know. >> reporter: this as a famous face joins that growing list of accusers. former supermodel janice dickenson saying cosby sexually assaulted her in 1982. though a lawyer for cosby says her story conflicts with other statements and is an outrageous lie. in 2005 another woman sued by cosby claiming he drugged and assaulted her. she said 13 others with similar stories offered to testify. the case settled out of court for an undisclosed amount with no admission of wrong-doing. criminal charges were never brought against him. in a statement that cosby's lawyer says does not refer to that settled case, they call one woman's claims old and

discredited. cosby's team said he will perform as planned friday in florida but this morning, his comedic empire taking a hit. >> i knew something was wrong. >> reporter: tvland will no longer air "the cosby show" reruns. and nbc canceling a cosby sitcom netflix postponing a stand-up performance. >> i think they felt like it won't be worth the risk. >> dan abrams is here. this cascade of charges. but is cosby in any legal jeopardy? >> probably not. i think that both the criminal and civil statutes of limitations have probably expired. remember, we're talking about two different paths that are the possibility. one could be civil action, one could be criminal action. there's a theoretical argument on criminal. if there's a crime, face up to life in prison, no statute of limitations. but i think that's theoretical. i think the real issue for him is going to be his career and

his legacy. >> and we have seen the statements coming out from him and his lawyers. there's been a mixed bag of what he said. >> this is the problem for him. when it comes to janice dickenson, it's an unambiguous denial. it did not happen. 2005 case. it did not happen. yet with some of the other cases, he's just issuing a blanket denial saying they're old and discredititied. i think that's a problem for him. i think if his position is none of this happened. these are all lies, he's got to come out and call them lies. i mean, a lot of people -- >> if he believes they're lives, does he have legal recourse? >> that's what i was going to say, if this isn't true, there's nothing more defamatory that someone could say. that he ought to be suing. if all of these people are literally making these things up about him, there's nothing more defamatory than that. when you're talking about someone who's career and legacy are now in jeopardy, if these are lies, a, he's got to get out there and call them that. unambiguously.

every single case, lie, lie, lie. and, b, you know, you probably want to be thinking very seriously about a lawsuit. >> you don't think the strategy which he's tried up to now of basically trying not to say anything, or refuse to answer the questions -- >> because of the numbers. because of the numbers. because new people keep coming forward. that's the problem he's got. if it's just one person as in the civil case that he settled, or maybe even two, you can say, we're not going to discuss it. but the problem is he's selectively responding to cases. and that's what he can't do. he can't come out with janice dickinson and be so specific that that didn't happen. and yet, when it comes to some of these other case, say, well, it's old and discredited. that's the big problem for him. >> thanks very much. and to ginger with the weather. >> so many of us feeling like we have fast forwarded right into winter, right through there. we're going to blame it on mother nature. we start in chicago. another cold morning. earlier this week, tied a record

the road, stuck in cold snow in freezing cold weather. we have seen it happen to so many people this week. and rob marciano is in minneapolis with the story. good morning to you, rob. >> reporter: hi, lara. as you know, it's been an unusually early start to the winter weather this year. we have more than twice as much snow covering the country than has been typical. it has been dangerous driving for millions of americans and getting stuck or stranded in a situation like this is a very real and life-threatening possibility. it can happen in an instant. >> we aren't going anywhere. >> reporter: you're driving in an unfamiliar area, and suddenly you're lost. or worse, stranded in the snow. >> that truck ain't going nowhere until we get help up here. >> reporter: it happened to four men in oregon on tuesday. their gps sending them the wrong way into rough, secluded country. >> we didn't know how long we were going to be there. >> reporter: the men hunkering down for 18 hours until help finally arrived.

>> we want to get out as soon as possible. >> reporter: and in western new york, this women's basketball team stranded for 30 hours after heavy snow brought traffic to a dead stop. >> we made it out. >> reporter: some are not as fortunate. in 2006, james kim and his family became stranded on this desolate mountain road in oregon. james set out on foot looking for help, but died from hypothermia. what happens if you do get stranded? what do you need to do to survive? >> above all, do not leave the vehicle. >> reporter: bruce is an expert with the minnesota department of public safety, taking me through his survival tips. we're stranded in the middle of nowhere, temperatures in the teens. what should i do. stay cool and stay warm at the same time. >> reporter: keep calm and bundle up. >> make your car visible. tie a rag or brightly-colored ribbon so people can find you. run your vehicle about ten minutes for every hour. have the heat running during that time and charge your cell phone at the same time. and probably the most important

thing is, stay with your vehicle. >> don't leave this car. but i had to ask -- my instinct to survive is leave the vehicle and go find help. how do you keep from doing that? >> fight the instinct, keep your wits about you and stay with the vehicle. because it's your best shelter. it's a lot easier to find you in this vehicle, than to find you walking through that field over there. >> reporter: there's a light, i feel like i can walk to it. >> you don't know how far that is. >> reporter: and don't forget to pack this, a simple survival kit, complete with a whistle, that bright rag, hand warmer, emergency blanket, protein bars and a flashlight with extra batteries and of course, a first aid kit. >> when you're in a situation like we are in right now, it will save your life. >> reporter: most of that survival gear can actually fit in a small piece of tupperware and you can just slide that into the back seat of your car.
