collapsing roofs and flooding. temperatures about to rise. gio benitez is outside buffalo, new york, this morning. again for us this morning. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this storm has just paralyzed so much of this town. we're at a local high school. it's been closed down all week long. but take a look at that roof. see all that snow? cuss totodians are very, very concerned about that. this snow might be pretty, but, boy, is it dangerous? overnight that epic snowfall just keeps falling. western new york. residents are waking up to yet another whiteout. falling up to 4 inches per hour overnight. some areas with snow drifts over 7 feet. hundreds of cars stuck on the side of the road. watch as this front-end loader rams right into one of them to clear the way. >> this is how they do it in but. >> reporter: with the death toll now up to 10, the still covered roads making this storm even more dangerous.

first responders forced to use snow plows for emergency calls. >> the rescue workers can't get to people. it's a dangerous, dangerous situation. >> reporter: now the race is on to clear not just the roads, but the roofs. to prevent more accidents like this. this roof collapsing, tearing down the gas lines in its path. in new york, this nursing home forced to evacuate due to the threat of the roof caving in. that's the big concern right now. look at all of the snow. experts say one foot of wet snow on a 1600 square foot home could weigh as much as 14 tons. even football not safe. the 220,000 tons of stadium snow forcing the buffalo bills to play this weekend's game in detroit on monday. this arctic blast stretching all of the way to grand rapids michigan, creating zero visibility and impossible driving conditions. over 28 inches of snow this month. last time they saw those numbers was in 1895.

1895. and back here just outside buffalo it's not always going to be this way. temperatures are going to warm up. ginger, a lot of people are concerned what is going to happen when all of this stuff melts. >> and they are going to exactly that, straight from the lake effect snow warning into a flood watch. thank you for being out there. all week, by the way. the flood watch, sunday through wednesday in western new york. and there's a reason. temperatures by the end of the weekend reach into the 50s. we will see a rapid snow melt. the sun angle is a little lower, that's good news. but the ingredients, 85 inches of snow, higher snow totals, and tack on rain, an it's going to come through during the weekend, warming up day by day, and the numbers are going to be so much warmer. look at the mild weekend ahead. not just in buffalo. but new york city, going to 67 after 36 for a high today. so, you know there's a major flood concern. i think it's a slow go. but still, some of the trains

are going to be full of snow. it's going to be a mess. >> wish them well. a lot of people welcoming the 70 and 60 degree temperatures. thanks. now to the showdown over immigration. president obama addressing the nation last night, announcing the sweeping plan that could grand 5 million undocumented immigrants legal status. republicans vowing to use every tool they have to fight what they call executive overreach. jonathan karl is in washington. jon, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president heads to del sol high school in las vegas today with top democrats nancy pelosi and harry reid to hail a promise kept on immigration. in his primetime address, the president said he acted on his own because congress has failed to fix a broken immigration system. >> and so those members of congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where congress has failed, i have one answer. pass a bill. >> reporter: immigrants and

their supporters were ecstatic. under the president's order, 5 million people in the u.s. illegally, will be eligible for temporary status and work permits. the biggest group, undocumented immigrants who have children who were u.s. citizens, born here. to be eligible for legal status, they must have been in the u.s. for more than five years, pay a fee of about $500, and have no criminal record. >> if you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. if you're a criminal, you'll be deported. if you plan to enter the u.s. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up. >> reporter: the republicans are promising to do everything they can to undo the president's actions. >> it's incumbent on republicans in congress to use every single constitutional rule to rein in a president so the president does not become an unaccountable monarch. >> reporter: the president will officially set this all in motion today.

but, david, it is going to take a while to go into effect. the first undocumented immigrants who are eligible won't begin to apply likely until the spring. >> all right, thanks. as we mentioned at the top, the president's first interview after last night's speech is with george, and you can see it sunday on "this week." >> george is on his way to las vegas to be with the president for that interview. and now to ferguson, missouri. as the city waits for the grand jury ruling and michael brown's father speaks out, asking for speech. abc's steve osunsami has the story. >> reporter: overnight, protesters fought with police, here in ferguson for the second night in a row. at least two people were arrested. stop resisting. >> reporter: the streets starting to light up ahead of the big decision. will the grand jury charge police officer darren wilson for the shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown? >> my name is michael brown sr.

>> reporter: and this morning, a new public service announcement from brown's father, urging his son's supporters to respond peacefully to whatever comes down. >> but hurting others and drying property is not the answer. no matter what the grand jury decides, i do not want my son's death to be in vain. >> the officer that was involved in the shooting of michael brown was darren wilson. >> reporter: we're hearing from the police chief at the center of the racially-charged firestorm. officer darren wilson's boss. ferguson's police chief, tom jackson. >> we're preparing for the worst, but we're hoping the leadership coming out to protest, if they do, is going to try to keep it peaceful. >> reporter: some of the worst fighting with police has happened here, right outside his window. the shooting death of michael brown, he says, changing the city forever. >> it's a dicey situation right now. >> reporter: despite rumors, he says he's not quitting. >> i have a mission to complete. >> reporter: what's your mission? >> i want to see the department

come through on the other side nt to see the community come out better, and the nation. >> the police chief here has taken a great deal of criticism in this case but made clear to me no matter the decision from the grand jury, michael brown's death will remain a tragic situation for everyone involved here, including police. robin? >> all right. steve. hopefully everyone will listen to what michael brown's father had to say about peace, regardless what the grand jury decides, possibly this weekend. and now to dan harris in for amy. >> great to see you. new security concerns at the white house overnight. just as president obama was wrapping up his immigration speech, the secret service arrested a woman carrying a holstered handgun near the north fence where she was taking part in a protest. this comes just a day after the secret service arrested a suspicious man parked near the white house with a rifle, ammunition and a knife in his car.

that man is now facing weapons charges. and breaking overnight, an explosion own on oil rig in the gulf of mexico. one worker was killed, three others got hurt. investigators are trying to figure out what caused that blast. no oil leak has been reported. and look at the shocking video out of northern california where this gym teacher is charged with abuse. he was caught on camera, trying to force a 14-year-old girl into the swimming pool during p.e. class. this teenager was refusing to swim, saying she didn't want to get her hair yet. her lawyer calls the teacher's behavior unexpected. saying there are other nonphysical ways to discipline her. an old brick building in kansas city reduced to rubble after hit by a speeding suv. and it all plays out on surveillance video. watch as the driver of the stolen vehicle, trying to get away from police, hits the corner of the building, causing the brick wall to come down, collapsing the roof. police say she was going up to 80 miles per hour, but only suffered minor injuries. a huge upset in the nfl.

the underdog of all underdogs this year, the winless oakland raiders, scoring a late touchdown last night to beat the chiefs, 24-20. this is the raiders' first win in more than a year. >> yay. good job, raiders. >> big round of applause. we have one final piece of news here. it's a delicious nugget from the not very skilled criminal department. here's the video. watch the guy with the purple shirt. he's a suspected burglar, wandering into somebody's yard, he walks to one side of the yard, checks it out. nothing doing there. strides to the other side, starts poking around here. you'll see him disappear from the frame for a second. and then out of nowhere, he starts running. why? because at the bottom of the frame is a tiny but fearsome yorkshire terrier. you see the dog celebrates, spinning around. it's quite rapid. what you don't see, he's actually attacked by a rabid bichon frise.

another student saved when the bullet lodged in the books in his backpack. the lone gunman killed by police. >> they probably shot him 20 to 30 times. >> reporter: why did 31-year-old myron may return to the school he graduated from in 2005 and open fire? this morning, even his foster mother can't answer that. >> that's not the myron we know. she said he seemed perfectly normal two weeks ago. staying in this cabin on her property about two hours from campus since he returned to florida three weeks ago. before that, he had been working as a lawyer in new mexico where police thought he was acting strangely. this police report said last month his girlfriend called cops after may claims police are after him, bugging his phone and car. >> mr. may had a written journal and video expressing fears of being targeted. >> reporter: and he told eight of his friends to expect a package to be delivered today. he even sent this picture of it.

>> people were a little afraid. why did he choose us? >> police warned them not to open it. but some are hoping it contains an explanation for unexplainable actions. >> there has to be some mental illness or something going on that we were not aware of. >> reporter: perhaps the most remarkable part of this shooting, from beginning to end, it lasted all of two minutes. one reason why is campus police here were actually ready. they did active shooter training here just two weeks ago. robin? >> they were prepared. all right. ryan, thank you. now to suspended nfl star adrian peterson, speaking out for the first time since being banned from playing for the rest of the season. addressing those child abuse charges. ryan smith has the story for us. >> reporter: overnight much maligned minnesota vikings star, adrian peterson, speaking out. saying when it comes to disciplining his children, he's changed his way.

peterson telling "usa today," in his first extensive comments since being arrested on child abuse charge, i won't ever use a switch again. there's different situations where a child needs to be disciplined, such as time-out, taking their toys away, making them take a nap. there are so many different ways to discipline your child. the six-time all-pro agreeing to a plea deal with no jail time earlier this month. i stand here and i take full responsibility for my actions. i'm anxious to continue my relationship with my child. >> reporter: his bail terms previously prohibited from having contact with his child. now, the ballplayer recounting a phone call with his boy just says ago. the first contact he had with son in five moss. i was like, hey, buddy, how are you doing. i'm doing okay. i was like, i love you. he was like, i love you too, dad, can i come over to your house? his latest statements, seemingly a departure from statements he

classified advertising site that he says refuses to do what amazon and ebay do to block the sale of dangerous recalled items. >> they will not do it to date. >> reporter: what do you say about that? >> it's morally irresponsible. >> reporter: they say they have a system to prevent the posting of recalled items. but our abc stations again and again and again were able to find and buy the recalled bumbo baby seat from listings on craigslist. >> so, they're selling items, advertising item, posting items that could kill children? >> correct. >> reporter: brian ross from abc, how are you. the founder is craig newmark and would not answer our questions, when we caught up with him, saying he's not involved in management. >> i have been encountered from brian ross from abc news. >> reporter: told the site is founded is accused of being morally irresponsible, putting children's lives at risk, he walked away.

good morning, i'm kristen sze. a man who pretended to be a san jose high school student is in jail accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old multiple times. milpitas police say the 28-year-old met the victim on the internet through a social networking site. the teen was tricked into believing his false identity. he later assaulted the victim repeatedly in a milpitas home over an extended period of time. how is your friday morning commute? leyla gulen, what do you think? >> it's a little spoiled on the eastern span of the bay bridge because of an earlier stalled big rig right at treasure island. we're at 14 miles per hour as you leave san francisco. once you pass treasure island, you are on your way there. as we take you on the northbound side of 101 at oakland road, there's a report of heavy smoke coming up from the freeway, so

back on a friday morning. and now to two men who came together to break boundaries and defy the odds. one of them becoming the first african-american principal of beverly hills high school. their inspiring story is now a book, "where a man stands." and cameron mathison has more. >> reporter: as a kid in privileged beverly hills, stephen fenton loved basketball. so did carter paysinger in south central l.a. privilege was a foreign word. but that changed when carter's mom arranged enrollment for her teenage son in mostly white beverly hills high school. >> i had to prove to everybody that i belonged. >> reporter: he did.

so impressive in sports after college that he was hired by bef beverly hills high school as a coach, a teacher and a mentor for local students like steven fenton. what do you remember about steven? >> an intense, determined, passionate young kid who wanted to prove that he belonged. that reminded me of me. >> reporter: nearly 20 years later, they not only stayed friends, but steven joined the school board and convinced other members that carter should be principal of beverly hills high. >> the best thing for the school was for carter to lead it.

good morning, i'm kristen sze. enjoy the dry weather now because the wet weather is making a comeback, mike. >> don't put that umbrella too far away, keep it handy because you'll need it starting tonight after 7:00. we still have some fog to contend with in the north bay and east bay valleys. that will start lifting but when it does the high and midlevel clouds will roll in. i think it will be dry during the daylight hours but come 7:00 light rain in the north bay and drizzle along the coast and san francisco. about a 10th tohird in the lower elevations. we have a big accident here in foster city just off of the san mateo bridge and it's blocking a couple of lanes. it's westbound on highway 92 right at edgewater boulevard.
