know better sleep with sleep number. several open businesses are cleaning up today after a night of absolute chaos in the downtown area. police arresting nearly 40 people for setting fires, looting and throwing things at the police. this is all the fallout from a grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri deciding not to charge a white police officer for killing an unarmed black teenager. >> it's heartbreaking sight. seniors afraid to leave the house. school canceled. kids scared to go outside and play. no one should have to live like this. no one deserves this. >> missouri's governor has ordered more than 2,000 national guard troops into ferguson to help local law enforcement keep order and another night of

protest is expected there and across the country. good afternoon. i'm larry beil. >> i'm ama daetz. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is in ferguson with the latest. >> reporter: his actions triggered outrage from coast to coast. today, for the first time, officer darren wilson is talking publicly about the day he shot and killed unarmed teenager michael brown, telling abc's george stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview that while he is sorry, he would not have done anything differently. wilson remains in hiding, where yesterday he learned a grand jury decided not to indict him. the announcement sparked violent protests in and around ferguson, missouri. mass demonstrators burned businesses to the ground. they threw rocks and bottles at police. officers responded with tear gas. today, disgust and disbelief as the community comes together to patch up some of the

destruction. >> i'm not angry. i'm disappointed. i'm very disappointed. >> reporter: michael brown's family through their attorney shared their own disappointment, angry with how the case that sparked the unrest was handled. >> we object publicly and loudly as we can on behalf of michael brown, jr.'s family that this process is broken. >> reporter: many here are concerned there could be more rioting tonight. the governor insists that law enforcement is prepared, saying there will be more police and national guard troops on the streets. marcy gonzalez, abc news, ferguson, missouri. >> you got a look at officer wilson in the story there. for the first time, we are actually hearing from ferguson police officer darren wilson in an exclusive interview with abc news. wilson said he was sorry for the loss of life but he would not do anything different that day. he says brown reached into his car and grabbed his gun. wilson says brown ran away, then

charged toward him. >> at that time i gave myself a mental check, can i shoot this guy, legally can i, and the question i answered myself was i have to. if i don't, he will kill me if he gets to me. >> you are absolutely convinced that if michael brown were white, this would have gone down in exactly the same way? >> no question. no question. >> wilson said there is no way brown had his hands up when he fatally shot him. more of his interview is coming up on abc 7 on "world news tonight with david muir" with david muir at 5:30. in oakland, police are gearing up for another night of protests. this is a live look outside of oakland police headquarters. demonstrators tell abc 7 news they will be gathering at the police department about an hour from now. obviously nobody there live as we take a look. last night's protests started peacefully as sky 7 hd shows it quickly turned chaotic. protesters shut down 580,

blocking traffic through part of the evening, then marched back downtown and started smashing windows and looting stores. police arrested 39 people, three officers were injured. this afternoon, city leaders said police will be back out tonight trying to keep their city safe. >> oakland has a long history of raising its voice when it feels the need to do so. we want to do that in a way that protects personal property, that protects individuals, that protects our officers. >> ten oakland businesses were either damaged or looted. ten merchants are stores damaged. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield talked to the owner of one of those businesses. >> reporter: the manager of oakland's metro pcs store walked in this morning to find a huge mess. empty shelves and a cash drawer with no money in it, just discarded on the floor. >> what happened here? cell phones, accessories, everything.

>> reporter: all gone. >> all gone. all gone. they took all the stuff and burned it down the street. >> reporter: he says he watched as vandals threw his merchandise into bonfires burning on broadway. the metro pcs store was not the only one vandalized. the windows at starbucks were smashed and the inside was looted. so was the smart and final two blocks away. people took dog food, snacks and bottles of liquor from the store. a witness said one man's cart was so full of merchandise it was too heavy to push. >> you just don't do that. i don't care if he's bad or want to tear something up. go to the gym. >> reporter: as business owners surveyed the damage this morning, many felt frustrated with the protesters. >> to just vandalize and steal and rob is senseless. >> reporter: the cleanup process started before the sun came up. crews boarded up windows and painted over graffiti. by the start of the work day, life appeared to go on as

normal. but some are hoping city leaders won't just move on but will try and learn from this. >> i would definitely love to see oakland change. that's for sure. in a better direction. better direction. this ain't helping at all. >> reporter: the smart and final was able to reopen today but not the starbucks or metro pcs store. they have too much of a mess inside to clean up. police say they are hearing that more protests are being planned for tonight. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live in oakland with what he's hearing from local officials about last night. vic? >> reporter: well, as amy hollyfield said, the protesters are planning a series of rallies tonight. one of them is expected to be right here in front of the police department. the other at the plaza in front of oakland city hall. the mayor just finished a news conference with the police chief and basically the mayor had

nothing but praise, as did chief wendt, for the officers last night for showing what they called tremendous restraint in the face of a lot of taunts. and of course, being the target of projectiles like rocks, bricks, things like that. the chief said at its height there was some 1,500 to 2,000 protesters at various locations and some of his officers suffered injuries. the most serious, he said, was a concussion which required treatment at a hospital. some 43 demonstrators were arrested, some for looting stores. ten of them, ten of those stores hit along one block right next to or near the police department. the chief said the late response of the officers to the looting was because there were just so many protesters, his officers could not be everywhere. when the chief was asked why he couldn't block the demonstrators from climbing on to interstate 580, he said there were just too many people, too many protesters there. he just couldn't get enough

police officers and even if he called for mutual aid, he didn't think that would be enough. the majority of those arrested he said were from oakland, not from out of town, and he expects most of the charges to be misdemeanors, things like public intoxication, refusing to disperse, resisting arrest. you know what that means. that means that those people who got misdemeanors could be out here again tonight protesting. the mayor said she is determined to keep the peace tonight. she again complimented the police for showing restraint and hopes that will happen again tonight. that is the very latest from oakland. vic lee, abc 7 news. in palo alto this afternoon, stanford students and community members marched against the decision in ferguson. they shut down the intersection of university and emerson for about ten minutes as they played dead in the middle of the street. no one was arrested. the protesters then moved on to city hall.

police shut down hamilton for the rally. >> we are following the protests as well as the aftermath of the ferguson decision online and on air. our coverage continues now on twitter. teachers in san francisco expect to get a nice gift from the school district for the holiday. >> the district has agreed to a 12% raise over three years and abc 7 news education reporter lyanne melendez live with us in san francisco to tell us what else they are getting. >> reporter: well, initially the teachers union was asking for a 20% raise so i think this is a happy medium. really, the story today is about a group of teachers who will get a much needed 15% raise. they are called para-professional educators or teachers' aides. they work part-time and earn a very modest income. because of that, there is a high turnover among them. >> we make about a third of what teachers make and teachers

already don't have the biggest salaries and it is extremely hard living in this city. >> reporter: san francisco unified has agreed to give paraprofessionals with eight or more years with the district a 15% raise over three years. >> we have been really clear from the beginning and the union has been very clear they want to do something for the paraprofessionals. >> full-time teachers will get a raise of 12% over three years, retroactive to last july. here's the breakdown. the salary for teachers starting out in san francisco is $50,000. within three years, they will be making more than $56,000. the average salary for a san francisco teacher with 12 years on the job is $69,000. in three years, they will be earning close to $78,000. this was possible because the district has received more funding from the city and the state. the agreement also called for more prep time, about 30 minutes a day to work on lesson plans or meet with students who need

help. now teachers must vote to ratify this agreement. >> we are just in the process of creating ballots and explanations and summaries and sending those out to all members. we hope to have those in the mail by the end of the week. >> reporter: the idea is for teachers to approve it by december 11th in order to get their retroactive pay in time for the holiday. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. speaking of the holidays, lot of people wondering what the weather will be like. >> spencer christian's here with the latest. >> well, as you know, today was spare the air day. we have had poor air quality. tomorrow will be another spare the air day but the weather does look lovely. let's go to live doppler 7 hd. you can see we have mainly sunny skies right now but there is haze hovering over the bay area. current temperature readings, 63 degrees in san francisco. 62 across the bay in oakland. generally, low to mid 60s in all locations around the bay area now. there's a look at the haze. also, mostly sunny skies from the east bay hills camera.

santa clara's big plans for super bowl l at levi's stadium. the big price tag coming with it and who could foot the bill. at 4:13, the first live look at traffic. this is the macarthur maze. it's like trying to run through a maze at this point. it is bumper to bumper. oncoming traffic snaking through emeryville and trying to get to 80 east. nobody's going anywhere fast. little better on the right-hand side for the folks making the turn to san francisco.

this is a sight the giants fans are not going to like. today, pablo sandoval, the lovable panda, donned the jersey and hat of his new team, the boston red sox, and got a hug from a red sox panda? the third baseman looks forward to being in boston but it was not an easy decision to leave san francisco. >> the giants opened the door, teach me how to respect the game. the giants fans, one of the best. at that time, i want a new challenge. >> one real surprise here is that sandoval took boston's five year, $95 million offer. that's basically what the giants had offered as well. the panda saying he just wanted a new challenge in a new place. last night, sandoval posted this message on instagram, leaving the san francisco giants and the city i love is the most

difficult decision i have made. i have grown up with you, laughed and cried with you and you have blessed me with your support, friendship and love. my heart will always be in san francisco. we'll have more on sports at 6:00. on top of losing the panda, popular third base coach tim flannery announced today he will be leaving as well, stepping down after eight years with the club and 33 years in professional baseball. the 57-year-old says he's got to spend more time with his family and devote his energy to raising money for causes through his music. flannery, a guitar player and singer, was very active in the effort to raise money for brian stowe, the giants fan who was beaten outside dodgers stadium in 2011 and is now going through a slow recovery process. giants pitcher jeremy affeldt tweeted this picture saying wisdom from a great soul. he said it's the first time he's ever been sad about a coach's resignation. forget black friday. shoppers got psyched today for what they are calling undies tuesday. check out the crowd rushing into

this store in san francisco. there's a lot of skin showing there. the union square store ran a promotion that gave the first 100 shoppers today two free items. all they had to do was show up wearing only their underwear. >> everybody was cool about it. no one was jumping in line. a lot of people watching. good time. >> $249 jacket for free and a dress that's like $99 for free. you can't beat that deal. >> sort of free. clothes-free. this isn't the first time they have held this type of promotion. the retailer has been offering semi-naked parties to kick off winter sales since 2005. if only i had known. we might have some horrifying video. good thing this event was not held in buffalo. i don't think they would be as eager. >> we had such nice weather today and continue to have it. spencer christian is here with when things are changing. >> yes, it's a lovely day. you can see haze in the air

indicating the decline in air quality but the weather is certainly nice and mild, pleasant. a look at live doppler 7 hd indicating some of what i just told you. mainly sunny skies, just a few thin high clouds around and of course, there's a look at that haze as we look from sutro tower over san francisco on this mainly sunny afternoon. these are the forecast features. clear overnight with chilly conditions inland, mild afternoons through thursday, thanksgiving day. then we get a rainy pattern that looks like it will be a pretty good soaking pattern saturday through tuesday. let's look at the satellite image. high pressure, the controlling factor right now. we can expect that to keep us mild and dry for the next couple days through thanksgiving day but look at the lineup of storms coming our way that will bring us four, at least four consecutive days of at least some rainfall. the long range outlook for rainfall totals, taking us into tuesday of next week, estimates three to five inches of rain in the wettest spots in the north

bay. perhaps more in some of the very all of the bay area will get y. substantial rain from this series of storms but especially the north day. to holiday travel, tomorrow is a busy travel nationally, going into thanksgiving. tomorrow of course being the day before thanksgiving. look for a big storm on the east coast producing snow away from the coast, rain along the coast. heavy at times, both the rain and the snow. that's tomorrow morning. about midday tomorrow, we will see the center of the storm moving up along the coast of -- the northeast coast, new england coast, still producing rather significant rainfall and snow and of course, travel delays from the midatlantic up into new england. places like boston, new york, washington, d.c. and points southward will have delays for arrivals and departures all day tomorrow into tomorrow night. then the storm pulls away on thursday, leaving behind a rather quiet pattern for much of the northeast with the exception of that area where parts of western virginia, west virginia, eastern kentucky and tennessee

come together. could be some snow and rain there. back to the bay area, overnight, clear skies, low temperatures, mainly in the 40s although some upper 30s will be experienced in the north bay valleys. tomorrow, mainly sunny, mild once again. another spare the air day, second consecutive one. highs tomorrow will range from upper 60s at the coast to low and mid 70s all around the bay shoreline to the inland valleys. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. remaining partly cloudy but dry and mild on thursday, thanksgiving day. rain develops late friday. look at what follows. rainy day saturday, rain and showers on sunday, wet and windy with driving rain on monday. lingering showers into tuesday. we are going to get quite a dose of our winter-like rainfall in late fall, that four to five day period. it is much needed but it can cause some complications, maybe local street flooding. it may interfere with plans for outdoor activities but we need the rain. >> thank you, spencer.

a predicament for a stray dog in texas. his head got caught in a plastic jug. he was stuck like that for weeks until a woman was finally able to catch him and cut it off. audra tried for weeks to catch him but couldn't until yesterday, when she finally gained the puppy's trust and was able to grab him. she has now adopted the dog and named him bucky, short for bucket. >> that poor little guy. look how cute he is.

then we had the story a couple weeks ago about the deer running around with something on his head. it was from halloween. a candy bucket. >> you're right. all right, we are down to three. another couple eliminated last night on "dancing with the stars." >> the three remaining couples will dance for the coveted mirror ball trophy tonight. we have more from los angeles where the anxiety is kicking in. >> reporter: after three months of dancing -- >> so dramatic. >> reporter: and ten stars eliminated, it's all come down to this. >> definitely feeling the pressure right now. >> reporter: the final three stars are ready to kick up their heels one final time tonight, performing a last minute dance with only 24 hours to rehearse. >> it's just like hard to, you know, stay in it. >> reporter: alphonso ribeira is the last man standing and leads the pack with two perfect scores from monday night.

in news making headlines at 4:30, more national guard members are on standby in ferguson, missouri preparing for yet another night of protests. 2200 national guard troops will be deployed tonight, triple the number from last night, when some protesters looted and set fires. the protests stem from anger that officer darren wilson will not be charged in the death of michael brown. responding to last night's violence, the president said this afternoon the destruction of property is a criminal act. >> burning buildings, torching cars, destroying property, putting people at risk, that's destructive and there's no excuse for it. >> abc news anchor george stephanopoulos talked exclusively with officer wilson and tweeted this photo you see, saying wilson tells me he feared for his life, would not do anything different. you can see that interview on "world news tonight with david

muir" here on abc 7 at 5:30. several oakland businesses are assessing the damage today after a night of chaos in response to the ferguson grand jury decision. some protesters looted stores, threw objects at police. a group also got on to interstate 580 blocking traffic for hours. santa clara isn't going to let super bowl 50 be a strictly san francisco extravaganza. the home of levi's stadium is planning festivities leading up to the 2016 game but needs a couple million dollars. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at santa clara city hall where the city council will take on the money issue tonight. >> reporter: it's a little ways off but santa clara is coming to the party a little late for super bowl 50. the host committee has been working for the past 18 months on its parties and celebrations so santa clara city council tonight has to decide how it's going to pay for its own $2 million celebration. levi's stadium is located in santa clara so the dozen or so

events are designed to give the community a way to join in the excitement of super bowl 50. steve wears two hats. he's on the super bowl 50 host committee and president of the santa clara chamber of commerce. he is working with san francisco and the nfl to make sure south bay residents have fun, too. >> these events we're planning are going to put together here in santa clara will not only allow residents to participate either for free or at a reasonable cost, it will be for the entire south bay. >> reporter: the $2 million plans include a big parade down great america markway, a week-long event at the convention center, beer, wine and food festival and a pep rally. a fund-raiser will be hired to find individual donors but the city council may need to chip in seed money. >> we will set aside seed money at the council meeting. that will at least help us move ahead with our projects. in the meantime, we will go out and solicit funds from local

businesses to help us fund our events. >> reporter: the city manager believes it's only fitting for santa clara to be part of the super bowl festivities. >> it's a great honor to be the site for super bowl 50 and we want to make this an incredible event for everyone to remember. >> reporter: santa clara residents tell us they would support the celebration. >> the stadium's here. i think that's the best thing for santa clara. i support it all the way. >> as long as it doesn't affect the residents. i have no problem. industry should pay for that. corporate should pay for that. >> reporter: not you. >> not me. >> reporter: the council will take up the proposal at tonight's meeting. david louie, abc 7 news. protesters gathered outside as the university of virginia board met today on claims of sexual assault and even gang rape on campus. [ chanting ] >> the board of visitors which is the school's governing body called a special meeting to

discuss allegations of sexual assault that have rocked the virginia campus. the school has suspended all fraternity activities following a report of gang rape at a frat house. the college is still reeling from allegations that were detailed in a "rolling stone" article last week. school officials are promising to fix the problem and are apologizing. >> jackie's experience should not have happened and nothing like it should ever happen again. >> i would like to say to jackie and her parents that i am sorry. and to all survivors of sexual assaults and their families, i'm sorry. >> according to that "rolling stone" article, 38 students, 38 have reported sexual assaults to university officials in the last academic year. only four have resulted in further action by the school board. school has hired an independent investigator to examine its policies. two bay area legislators want to block a proposal that

would charge pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the golden gate bridge. they are sponsoring a bill that prevents the golden gate bridge district from enacting a sidewalk toll. the district voted last month to study the fee as a way to cut down a $33 million deficit. >> the bridge has 45 different options to actually look at raising revenue. we just like to have them take these two options off. focus on the other 43. >> the bridge district was created by the state legislature in 1923. the assembly member says that gives the state the right to regulate its actions. the bridge used to charge pedestrians a fee but that was abolished in 1970. more than 2,000 people in the east bay received an early thanksgiving feast today thanks in part to warriors star klay thompson. the staff dished up turkey to low income families and community members at oakland city center. the annual thanksgiving dinner

water with hundreds looking on. he is hoping to compete in next week's red bull cliff diving world series. next year, i should say. 2015. not so frightening munchkin is back. the eight-pound pooch is wearing his teddy bear halloween costume while getting his workout on the gym, at the gym on the treadmill. munchkin was put in the spotlight this halloween when she debuted the costume. >> i fear a bad ending for munchkin here. >> that is just too adorable. >> come on! somebody's got to speed up -- i mean slow down the treadmill or munchkin has to speed up. the average u.s. household is just under three people but two families in nebraska are really bucking that trend in a huge way. >> melissa and scott gross are now the parents of 13 month old zane after a judge approved his adoption. zane is their ninth child. they have a biological daughter

and have also adopted all seven of zane's biological brothers. >> there was no question. we would take him right away. he had to spend some time in the nicu. he was born with down syndrome and had breathing difficulties. it's crazy. always something going on. >> how adorable is he in his little hat. they weren't the only family that got larger on this day. the grand family grew by two after they adopted twins. that gives them 16 kids. most of them are adopted. lori says giving children a home is what they do. they will take in more if another child needs a home. >> imagine a family of 16? >> my goodness. >> that is sweet chaos. so is the weather forecast coming up after thanksgiving. >> that's true. at least the rain we are going to get is holding off until after thanksgiving which is a good thing. live doppler 7 hd, we have calm, dry conditions right now although poor air quality. spare the air day tomorrow --

today and another one tomorrow. let's take a look at what's happening over on the east coast. heavy travel day tomorrow, it will be stormy all along the atlantic coast. right now, looking at radar indicating rainfall down along the south atlantic coast will all slide up the north atlantic coast tomorrow as rain and snow. that's no doubt going to just cause massive travel delays all across the country because of the -- all the flights going into and out of the major east coast airports. getting back to the bay area tomorrow, to california, i should say, top to bottom, sunny skies, mild conditions and here in the bay area, mainly sunny. another spare the air day but mild and dry tomorrow, and the week ahead, san jose, mildest day will be tomorrow. temperatures dropping off sharply. this is indicative of what we can expect around the bay area. temperatures bottom out over the weekend and we will get rain saturday through tuesday. it will be very very wet. i don't think many of us will be complaining. >> thank you, spencer. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00, a smart spoon.

silicon valley's tech genius has reached new heights. the company made in space headquartered at moffett field launched the first 3d printer into space and it's working. you are looking at the first ever 3d printed part created off the planet earth on the international space station. scientists want to make sure the 3d technology works in orbit. they hope this successful experiment will one day mean that crews on spaceships can actually print out their own spare parts. google is throwing its money, brain power and technology behind the humble spoon. the google liftware spoon allows people with tremors to eat

without spilling their food. we first showed you this last year. it senses how a hand is shaking and makes instant adjustments to stay balanced. it reduces the shaking by an average of 76%. the spoon is available just in time for the holidays and costs $295. a fork attachment is extra. harvard researchers say they have discovered a link between yogurt consumption and lower diabetes risk. the study finds eating a daily serving of yogurt is associated with an 18% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. the researchers were not able to determine exactly what was providing the health benefit and did not find that dairy consumption in general affected diabetes risk. a former boston university film professor made his first public appearance today since receiving a double arm transplant last month. he thanked everybody involved in the nearly nine-hour operation at brigham and womens hospital. he acknowledged the man whose

arms he received and thanked the donor's family. >> this person who is anonymous to me will always be as close to me as my own skin now. >> he lost his arms and his legs in 2011 after a strep infection. a total of 13 surgeons and 35 hospital personnel participated in this surgery. he says the best thing about the operation is now he's able to hug his loved ones again. >> that is wonderful. there's a new growing holiday trend. more and more people are working. >> one in four of us now, a quarter of americans will be required to work, this according to a new poll by allstate insurance company and the national journal. it isn't just retail workers. security guards, factory workers and even tv news anchors will also be on the job. ama daetz will be here. you get a good meal out of it. more than 45% of those polled said there is at least a chance they will be working one of the

upcoming holidays. new rules have been finalized that will require menus at chain restaurants, movie theaters plus amusement parks and vending machines to disclose calories. >> 7 on your side's michael finney with the skinny? >> new rules requiring calories be disclosed on menus are part of the affordable care act or obamacare. the regulation formally takes effect a year from now. the new rules apply specifically to restaurants with 20 or more locations. many have already begun to implement the requirement. you have seen them. california had a similar law but it was put on hold when the fed finalized its law. vending machine companies and amusement parks will also have to follow the new regulations. wireless carrier t-mobile has agreed to let its customers know when they are being throttled. throttling is when a company purposely lowers your data speed. it usually happens when it thinks you are hogging data or have reached the limits of your plan. under the agreement, users will

get a text message when they have reached their data limits. they also will be able to use an app that will enable them to find out exactly what their current speed is. t-mobile says the new policy will enable customers to make accurate comparisons to other carriers. tomorrow night on abc 7 news at 11:00, i will have a special report on throttling. how often does it occur and is it good or bad for you? retailers like kohl's and walmart are offering match offering price match deals. shopper, beware. you can take price matching too far. this guy right here found a chest of drawers for $1200 at kohls.com and the same one for $109 on another website. he wanted kohl's to match the price and ordered six. >> he told me due to the fact i provides price match so much, they decided to ban me and
