. making news in america this morning -- breaking overnight. new protests in ferguson and coast to coast. demonstrators filling streets in several cities denouncing the grand jury decision in the michael brown decision. plus an abc news exclusive. >> at the time, i thought can i shoot this guy? >> the officer who pulled the trigger. darren wilson explaining why he feared for his life. >> a severe storm threatening travel on the eve of thanksgiving. we have the latest timing and tracking of it all. plane problem. passengers forced to get out and push. because the aircraft froze to the runway. and we have a winner.

after months of competition, a new mirror ball champion on "dancing with the stars." well, good wednesday morning to you all, thank you for being here, i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. protesters took to the streets following the grand jury decision nationwide. >> protests flared up in ferguson, missouri. less chaotic than monday night. but still small pockets turning violent with more than 40 arrests. a huge crowd gathered and a tense standoff with police and the national guard. >> live update in a moment. but first the abc news exclusive. >> talking about darren wilson. sitting down with george stephanopoulos, giving his side of the story publicly for the first time. >> i reached out to grab his forearm, and i felt the immense power he had. >> you try to grab him, but you

feel that force. >> yes. as i hold him, i see him coming back around with his left hand, it's like this, a solid punch to the right side of my fis. >> where is is your gun? >> on my right hip. i point it at him, and i said get back or i'm going to shoot you. he grabbed the top of my gun and you're too much of a [ bleep ] to shoot me. he's trying to get over my hand with the trigger guard and shoot me with my own gun. >> what happened? >> didn't go off. the gun was being jammed by his hand on top of the fire am. i tried again. and another click. this has to work otherwise i'm going to be dead. he's going to get the gun away from me. i pull a third time, finally goes off. >> what happens? >> he gets angrier. the aggression, the intensity increases. and he comes back at me again.

i wasn't looking at him, rack it, expecting another hit, put my gun up and fire. i use my walkie, shots fired, send more cars and i chase after michael brown. >> why not stay in the car? he's running away? >> my job isn't just to sit and wait. i have to see where this guy goes. >> you start to follow him. and then he stops? >> he does stop. >> why? >> when he stopped, he turned and faced me. as he does that, his right hand immediately goes into his waistband, and his left hand is a fist and he charges me. >> some of the eyewitnesss said he turned around and put his hands up. >> that would be uncorrect -- incorrect. >> no way? >> no way. >> you say he starts to run, comes towards you. and? >> at that time i gave myself another mental check, can i shoot this guy? legally can i?

and the question i answered myself was, i have to. if i don't, he will kill me if he gets to me. i shot again, at least one hit him, i saw him flinch. he's 15 feet away, he's still not stopping. he gets to eight to ten feet, and he starts to lean forward like he's going to tackle me. and i looked down the barrel of my gun, and i saw his head, and that's where it went. >> right in the top of his head. >> yes. >> is there anything you could have done differently that would have prevented that killing from taking place? >> no. >> nothing? >> no. >> and you're absolutely convinced when you look through your heart and your mind that if michael brown were white, this would have gone down in exactly the same way. >> yes. >> no question. >> no question. >> even referred to -- to michael brown as being hulk hogan, talking about the strength he had. they are about the same height,

6'4", but michael brown had about 60, 70 pounds on darren wilson there. and again just to hear how he was overpowered. he's a big guy. to hear him say he was overpowered by an 18-year-old kid is remarkable to hear. >> split second decision that's affected two communities and still the turmoil. >> you will hear about that coming up on "good morning america." things were with a bit calmer in ferguson. there were some demonstrations that turned ugly and unruly again. >> karen travers is there, what did law enforcement do differently last night? >> reporter: good morning, reena and t.j. there was a significantly stepped up law enforcement presence. monday night, there was so much violence and chaos. 700 national guard troops last night, 2200. and that is why you saw such a quiet night. there are still demonstrators on the streets, gathered outside the ferguson police department

and city hall. police used tear gas to disperse a crowd putting a car on fire and breaking window at city hall. 44 people were arrested, most n mismisdemeanor charges. they say there are some people intent on starting chaos and starting violence, but believe the peaceful demonstrations will continue and it will be calm. >> we are hearing from michael brown's family for the first time since the grand jury decision. >> they are, of course, devastated by what happened on monday. there was a press conference yesterday, they are speaking through their lawyers and representatives. they are pushing for federal charges against officer darren wilson because the grand jury process was biassed and rigged and did not work. they say the system needs to change so their son's death is

not in vain and there is not another michael brown in the u.s. >> a lot of people watching to see what happens with the justice department investigation. thank you so much. live in ferguson. tensions over ferguson running high. protests in oakland, california, setting fire to trash cans in the middle of the street. some people wearing bandanas over their faces. vandalized police cars and blocked car ossen two major freeways. >> and key locations across the country, chicago, closing down lincoln tunnel. and times square, and converged in front of the united nations. >> we will have another update in just a bit in this half hour. and now to the morning's other big story, the holiday travel rush nor'easter is barrelling up the east coast at this hour and storms in several other spots.

it's the busiest travel day of the year. here's elizabeth herr. >> reporter: the race is on to beat mother nature for more than 46 million travelers expected to hit the roads, rails and skies this thanksgiving. >> i had three hours to scramble and get here. so it's been fun, but i think i have enough time to make it. >> reporter: to ease the pain, some airlines started waving change fees earlier this week. and in atlanta, the busiest airport this holiday, it's all hands on deck knowing the unsettling weather at the peak of holiday travel could disrupt the entire country. >> we look at the weather. the sky, it could be our best friend and biggest challenge. >> reporter: and based thn map, getting anywhere quickly could be challenging today, snow from iowa to wisconsin. heavy rain in the northwest and southwest and a nor'easter pounding the east. >> i heard there was snow coming in. i'm traveling by myself with the kids and the dog.

washington, d.c. and minneapolis. and in ferguson, missouri, it was much better without major fires. >> they set fire to a squad car, but police moved in with tear gas before the situation could escalate. bottles and pipes and a molotov cocktail were thrown at police officers. more than 40 arrested. and rallying against the ferguson decision. officers used pepper spray, but some refused to leave the area. and in minneapolis, a driver plowed into a crowd of protesters. the car dragged several people before coming to a stop. one woman had to be taken to a hospital. but we're told she is not seriously injured. of course, you can stay us with at abc news for the latest on the protests around the country. we have life team coverage on "good morning america" later. and university of virginia has apologized to student victims of sexual assault.

they have adopted a zero tolerance policy and hired an outside law firm to investigate how the school handled an alleged gang rape at a from attorneyty house. the police chief is asking for anyone who witnessed the incident to have the courage to come forward. >> there were people in the room who saw and heard what has been called shocking and horrifying and gut-wrench. and i hope that there's bystanders have the moral courage -- the moral courage to come forward and help us with that investigation. >> there are also growing concerns for the president of the university to step down. teresa sullivan is being criticized for flying to the netherlands on the day the rolling stone article appeared. and on the streets of paris, this is cell phone video. it captured the scene in the shopping district.

>> the protest was mobile and ended with businesses being vandalized, a paint store had wants busted up and people stole paint and spilled it. look on the street: it is everywhere. you can smell it and see it on the street on tires moving through. paint is everywhere. quite a miss at telegraph and 42nd. protests also extended interest emeryville and the vandals are not just focused on businesses. we saw them going into people's garages and stealing. hundreds of police officers were out last night, some officers from as far away as livermore some protesters refused to disperse and others said they didn't know what to do, it was confusing. >> there was a line of liver
