by the way is it pecan or pecan? >> in north carolina where my grandmother lives it's pecan. up north it's pecan. it's fancy to say it that way. doesn't matter as long as you call me to dinner on time. that whole pie situation with the syrup. look for cane sugar syrup and try to use that as a substitute. what you're going for is the texture and flour, a little bit of water, some sugar, your brown sugar, mix it all together with your nuts and everything and that should do the trick but i would say just don't do it today. you should never try something new on the actual big day, all right? >> that's very good advice. >> also worth noting that both amy and t.j. say pecan while i say pecan. >> we're from the south. >> you say tomato and salmon too. >> nobody in the south says salmon. >> are you sure? >> salmon. >> i'm kidding. i'm kidding, mr. pecan, all right. >> we have so many more questions and answers ahead about all of your thanksgiving

feast dilemmas you may have but turn to "gma" weekend anchor paula faris with the news. with the day's headlines. >> dan, i stand in solidarity with you. i say it the same way. >> i salute you. we do begin with hundreds of thousands of americans that are waking up on this thanksgiving day in the dark. many holiday dinners could be delayed after that nor'easter dumped rain, sleet and up to 20 inches of snow from north carolina to maine. knocking out power lanes up and down the east coast. the storm also crippling air and road travel. thousands of flights were canceled or delayed and airlines are now scrambling to rebook those passengers. and the thanksgiving parade in st. louis has been postponed because of unrest stemming from the michael brown shooting case in nearby ferguson. three people were arrested trying to break into st. louis city hall wednesday. but overnight, there was an eerie calm on the streets of ferguson as snow fell and police reporting only two arrests. and tensions were far higher in los angeles last night where

at least 130 people were arrested trying to block traffic to protest the michael brown grand jury decision. they had marched to a federal building and to police headquarters but were turned away by lines of police in riot gear. and protests related to ferguson have police on alert here in new york, as well. the famous macy's thanksgiving day parade getting under way. the balloons already to go this morning and abc's rob marciano is along the parade route. good morning, rob. can you hear us? hi, rob. >> hi, paula. yeah, i can hear you. everything -- security is tight. everyone is set to have a great time at the 88th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade. central park west is lined with the 27 floats that are going to roll down this area, 2.5 miles, 3.5 million people and a thousand clowns. come on. we got all sorts of clowns. you saw some earlier and these are clown graduates and crazy einsteins and, of course, about 16 of those high-flying balloons, just shrouded in those trees, it's snoopy and then, of course, back there, that's the

fantastic. i'm going to go with spatchcock for the win. cut the cooking time in half. you just cut up the length of the turkey, open it up, flatten it and that cuts the cooking time in half. you can just roast it flat and then you get this gorgeous -- going for the sexy turkey again. crispy skin, little wing tips. everything opened up. a nice turkey. very elegant. very fancy. >> that is a really good dare i have been in that situation before and had to -- yeah, scrap my dinner. >> i have too. i have too. >> i've used that strategy with toast before. so -- >> what? >> i'm not a big cook. sunny, our second question comes from the dessert category, so we're going to get it over to sunny. i press this button. >> yes. >> my husband doesn't like pumpkin and pecan or pecan and apple are a given dessert in our house. what are some pumpkin alternatives for the turkey day dessert table? >> oh, i've got a great one.

so what i love to do is a tart. right. it's my apple, cranberry and fig tart like that box of ice cream growing up with chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. it's choose your flavor, right. so i've got those in the bottom with the crumble topping and then over the top put just some almonds, brown sugar, a little bit of flour and butter. put it in the oven and everyone gets to pick their flavor or like i did with that ice crime scooped straight through. >> looks incredible. >> what is your guess? 20 to 30-calorie dish? >> oh, this is dessert, okay. let's not talk about what it's going to do to us. >> calories do count on holidays, dan. >> cheap day. >> come on. >> i like it. >> we got to spin the wheel again. i'll do it right. all right, now we spin the wheel. oh, there it goes. and we have how do you candied yams with the marshmallows on top? >> great question but i don't
