big winter storm. >> there is a different kind of traffic in some of the major cities. people packing the streets of new york city and philly for two of the biggest parades in the country. there's my man, rob marciano, my weekend compadre at the nyc parade. hey, rob. >> then there is ginger in philly, the oldest parade in the country and let's start with ginger who has been tracking all of that holiday weather making it so difficult for so many americans to get home on this holiday. ginger, good morning to you. a better day in philly. >> oh, so much better. even on the train down here we saw several of those accidents and obviously this morning it is so much nicer and we are much more festive. the energy is up. the temperatures are down but it is nothing like this. look at the numbers. some of them reaching 20 inches. more than eight states afoot or more of snow. >> one, two, three, go. >> up to 20 inches of fresh snow, dangerously coating those holiday roads from north carolina to maine.

>> just trying to be safe, getting to massachusetts. >> nearly 800 canceled flights. >> started down the runway and we got shut down. >> we keep getting texts it's delayed. so, i'm hoping that we can get out. >> reporter: the season's first major snowstorm in the northeast. striking at just about the worst possible time. >> i plan to be in north carolina. >> reporter: snow piling up, branches and power lines coming down leaving hundreds of thousands with cold homes and warm refrigerators. >> i think probably all of my food now is going to need to be thrown out. >> reporter: in des moines, iowa, the whipping winds sending snow sideways and cars off the road. and back east, check out this time-lapse video, poughkeepsie new york, getting 10 inches in just 9 hours. >> it's heavy snow. it's not good. >> reporter: let me assure you with the map of how quickly this thing has moved out drying out and, yes, you may see flurries in some places but looking at

the map there. the numbers with this is going to be cold, all right. we'll be in the 30s for a lot of folks. philadelphia for a high of 42 but it's going to feel a lot more chilly than that. morning windchills all the way back to bismarck and minneapolis, yeah, that is subzero so one question that i -- my friend paul operating our audio says why can't thanksgiving be in april? it's a great question, paul. i think something we need to answer but for now we'll look at that forecast and i'll be here throughout the parade with so much fun coming up, maybe in april we'll look again at temperatures. let's get back to dan and amy. >> take it up with the pilgrims. >> thank you, ginger. >> they're responsible for the calendar where that falls on the calendar. thank you, ginger. we should say the overnight snow helped quiet things down on the streets of ferguson although there were angry protests in other american cities. this as this country and the family of shooting victim michael brown react to the exclusive interview with officer darren wilson conducted by abc's george stephanopoulos. abc's alex perez is in ferguson.

alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. ed got news here, overnight protests were mostly peaceful. there was just one arrest. now, michael brown's family responding to that interview with some strong words for officer darren wilson. overnight, a tense, almost eerie calm in ferguson. national guardsmen patrolling the streets, fearful that protests like this one, would erupt for a third night in a row. and while snow may have kept the protesters at bay in ferguson, the same couldn't be said elsewhere in the nation. protesters were once again out in force in los angeles and oakland. in st. louis, one group storming city hall. demonstrators even gathering outside the u.s. embassy in london. all in protest of a grand jury decision not to indict officer darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown. in that exclusive interview with george stephanopoulos, wilson addressed the 18-year-old's parents directly. >> i'm sorry that their son lost his life and there's no --

nothing you can say that's going to make a parent feel better. >> reporter: on wednesday brown's parents responding to wilson making the rounds on network television. >> i don't believe a word of it. >> he's a murder. >> reporter: and the thanksgiving day parade in st. louis has been postponed until december because of the situation here and in new york city, authorities are keeping a close eye on the parade there today because of internet chatter suggesting that protesters may be planning to target the parade there today. dan? >> a lot of people worried about that. alex, thank you, as always. let's go now to my weekend co-anchor, pa paula faris with a look at the other top stories this morning. >> good morning to you and happy thanksgiving, everyone. we do begin with new video from another deadly police shooting that's made national headlines but this one in cleveland where a 12-year-old boy was shot. now, surveillance video shows tamir rice in a park waving and pointing what looks like a firearm. police say that when the patrol car arrived an officer issued

three orders for the boy to show his hands and when he did not, the officer shot him. that weapon turned out to be a toy gun. the boy's family says police acted too quickly. those officers are on leave pending an investigation. we do have new details about that daring raid by u.s. special forces who stormed an al qaeda hideout in yemen this week. they rescued eight hostages being held in a cave in the volatile eastern part of that country. overnight a government official confirmed an american journalist and other westerners were also being held in that cave but were moved just two days earlier. no word on their fate. meantime, special operation forces joined troops from yemen conducting the raid killing seven militants before airlifting the other hostages. and we do have a major development in the battle against ebola. researchers say the first test of an experimental vaccine on people shows that it is safe and, get this, it appears to be working and so far no serious side effects have been reported. authorities in northern

california say the state dodged a bullet when this union pacific train derailed sending 11 cars into that river below. the train was carrying only corn, but once a week a train carrying crude oil travels those same tracks and if that train had derailed, the spill could have contaminated a nearby reservoir that supplies drinking water to millions of people. and retailers in chicago on alert after the smash and grab. look at this, a minivan crashes through the doors of a clothing store, 20 thieves then run out of that van and from nearby cars grabbing thousands of dollars in merchandise in just two minutes they grabbed at least 200 pairs of designer jeans and each pair of those jeans sells for up to $700. and finally, they're very expensive. a classic case of what would you do. imagine you're in burger king ordering a whopper, you notice a bag that was left behind in a booth. you look inside and you see this.

how he has turned game nothing a multimillion dollar thing. >> yes, i said million. >> it's an incredible phenomenon, this professional video game thing. we'll talk about that coming up. also, "gma" on the lookout driving on ice. what you can do to stay safe in dangerous conditions, important information before you head out for the holiday. >> very important information. we begin with the man accused of pretending to be a doctor to con a stay at a swanky resort running up a big bill and running off without paying. he is now spending this thanksgiving behind bars and abc's linsey davis is here with more. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning. we are talking about a guy who eluded police for months. jeffrey cochran who if you run into him on the street he might tell you he is a heart doctor or professional golfer. police will tell you he is an artist, a con artist. you might call him dr. dupe. this morning, 41-year-old jeffrey cochran is behind bars accused at staying at a posh pennsylvania hotel without paying for it by pretending to be a doctor.

it's as if he stole the idea right from "catch me if you can" a movie about a real-life con artist played by leonardo dicaprio. pennsylvania police say he stayed in a $500 a night hotel at nemacolin woodlands resort for two weeks in may and ran up a tab of $16,000 and left without paying a dime. only leaving the hotel once employees caught on. police finally arresting him in a traffic stop in michigan six months later. according to court documents he initially called the hotel posing as another doctor from a local hospital and telling them to set up a house account for an out-of-town doctor named jeffrey cochran. authorities in nebraska say he's also wanted there, because earlier this year, he did the very same thing, telling a hotel he was a doctor doing work for a local hospital and that the hospital would be picking up the tab. that stay lasted 47 days. apparently the idea isn't so far-fetched. 20-year-old matthew shite was

sentenced to a year in jail after he was arrested in 2011 for impersonating a physician assistant in a florida hospital when he was just 17. >> i started doing cpr on her for two minutes. >> reporter: but cameron, seen here in previous mug shots for theft and theft by deception, has allegedly taken the the charade even further. >> it's finally time to see if there is anybody out there that can actually put up. >> reporter: back in 2009 he was interviewed by fox sports in las vegas where he went by the name of jeff muny and claimed to be a professional golfer. cochran was arraigned yesterday. he faces a preliminary hearing on december 15th. he has not yet entered a plea. according to the hotel in pennsylvania, they became suspicious and tried calling the doctor who was supposedly going to pay his bill. turns out cochran answered that call and walked right out of the hotel's back door. my grandmother used to say pay now or pay later. apparently he is learning that lesson the hard way. >> i'm surprised the hotel didn't demand a credit card up front.

about all of your thanksgiving feast dilemmas you may have, but let's turn now to "gma" weekend anchor paula faris with the news with the day's headlines. >> dan, i stand in solidarity with you. i say it the same way. >> thank you. >> i salute you. we do begin with hundreds of thousands of americans that are waking up on this thanksgiving day in the dark. many holiday dinners could be delayed after that nor'easter dumped rain, sleet and up to 20 inches of snow from north carolina to maine knocking out power up and down the east coast. the storm also crippling air and road travel. thousands of flights were canceled or delayed and airlines are now scrambling to rebook those passengers. and the thanksgiving parade in st. louis has been postponed because of unrest stemming from the michael brown shooting case in nearby ferguson. three people were arrested trying to break into st. louis city hall wednesday. but overnight, there was an eerie calm on the streets of ferguson as snow fell and police reporting only two arrests. and tensions were far higher in los angeles last night where

good morning. i'm kristen sze and happy thanksgiving. developing news out of hayward where police are investigating a multivehicle accident leaving one person dead. this was reported around 2:30 this morning near the west a street after ramp. multiple vehicles were involved. at least one person has been killed. officers are still investigating what led up to the accident. at one point all northbound laps of 880 were closed while it was investigated. the lanes since reopened. elsewhere, looking at traffic on this thanks vifg holiday, golden gate bridge very light. easy travel from ma rinne to san francisco. traffic is still sort of heavy. northbound 87 into downtown san
