good friday morning, i'm ryan smith. >> and i'm reena ninan. the holiday shopping frenzy in full effect already. you can hear the excitement and chaos of the video. black friday shoppers at macy's flagship store in new york city. >> a lot of people braved crowds after the turkey dinner. some shoppers waited hours in line, even days in some places. there were big deals and scuffles as well. here's abc's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: for some, this is precisely why heading out on black friday is a no-go. this playing out inside a houston walmart overnight, a fight over a tv ending with the police separating the zealous shoppers. but for die hard bargain hunters, nothing gets between them and the deals and with more and more stores opening earlier

than ever before, it is estimated that the thanksgiving day sales will rise to $2.6 billion this year. >> we'll sell more tvs this year than ever before. >> reporter: kohl's opening at 6:00 p.m. yesterday, offering a 32-inch tv for $99. over at staples, open at the same time, $99 got you an asus laptop. >> shopping tonight and tomorrow. >> reporter: to iowa and pennsylvania, these early bird shoppers call this their new tradition. starting their 40-hour shopping marathon on thanksgiving day. >> that's the routine, shop, eat, shop again. >> reporter: elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. >> will you be braving the crowds for the big bargains? >> on our facebook page we asked people if they were heading out on black friday. most said no. >> doris said no, staying in a food coma. >> and nun said no thanks, you feel like getting trampled on.

>> and colleen is waiting for small business saturday. saying i'm shopping local. that's a good idea. leave your comments, atmfans.com. they are urging shoppers to stay home to send a message about the michael brown case. in ferguson, protesters stopped sales at the local waumt lmart stopped sales at as they walked through chanting. demonstrations occurred at walmart and target stores in the area. the walmart in ferguson was closed overnight as a precaution. but no arrests overnight as protesters stayed indoors, and no national guard troops were by the police station. volunteers spent the morning painting billboards to show businesses there are people willing to rebuild. >> a lot of people have seen the destruction and the rough parts of this week and the past few months. but there's been a lot of people out here really centered on love and peace and community. >> even with the efforts to rebuild, the city canceled the annual northern lights

celebration and parade scheduled for sunday. two little new york state two little new york state brothers spent thanksgiving reco vering from a frightening brothers spent thanksgiving ordeal. the boys, age 9 and 11, were rescued after being buried in a snowbank for hours. a snowplow operator had been clearing a parks lot and didn't see the boys on the other side of the pile. they suffered from exposure, but they are going to be okay. and hundreds of thousands of americans are facing yet another day without power. wednesday's nor'easter plunged many of the area in the dark after the wind and heavy snow knocked out power lines. the electric company said it's so bad in some spots, it could take days. that's in contrast to the record-breaking temperatures in southern california. some areas baking in 90 degree hit. >> they are living it up. but unfortunately more of the deep freeze is on tap for many americans today. accuweather meteorologist jim

dickey is here with the forecast. >> many of us headed out to shop in the early morning hours. a couple trouble spots. a couple spots we're watching. light snow and ice in the upper midwest. watch for slick spots on the roadways. also, bursts of heavy rainfall. that's staying with us across the pacific northwest. deep moisture, and snow across the northern rockies. in the east, the issue will be the cold. temperatures down into the single digits. minneapolis, down to 5, 11 in chicago. into the 20s and 30s across much of the northeast and mid-atlantic. the southeast, holding 10 to 15 degrees below average. down to 28 in atlanta and montgomery. reena and ryan, back to you. thank you. a new york man on his way to a movie shoot in dubai has been arrested for carrying weapons. the tsa said the agent found stun and pellet guns with a machete in his luggage. he was told to return to court later. and pope francis is stepping

into a major controversy on his visit to turkey. on his itinerary, a visit to the thousand-room palace. many say it's too extravagant and destroyed forest land and went ahead with it despite an injunction against it. they're urging the pope to bypass the palace. and japan is on alert after a volcano began erupting for the first time in 22 years. mount oso spewed out lava, debris and smoke. shooting plumes of ash more than 3,000 feet into the air. air travel in the country has been disrupted as a result, and the volcano, located 600 miles southwest of tokyo, is one of the world's largest volcanos. a long weekend is a good reminder to remember our troops serving overseas who can't spend time with their families. but most did get to enjoy traditional dinners. troops in liberia were served a ton of turkey and 300 pounds of cranberry sauce along with all

the rest of the thanksgiving trimmings. president obama continued what has become a thanksgiving day tradition. making phone calls to members of the military all over the world. thanking them for helping stamp out ebola and fighting the war against isis. they have one main objective, keeping americans safe and secure. in new york, a wintry mix couldn't dampen the spirits of the annual macy's thanksgiving day parade. millions lined up for the two and a half mile route down the west side of manhattan. 8,000 people in the parade, marching bands from all over the country. giant balloons like snoopy and spider-man. and singers, dancers and clowns. what a day. >> it is an iconic moment. still ahead, vanished without a trace. the desperate search right now for a missing member of the ohio state university football team. plus on the edge, approaching a cliff, creeping

it's black friday and a new survey finds this time shopping day, this big shopping day doesn't look chaotic for many of us, it is. 44% out today don't have a shopping list, just looking for bargains. and more than a fourth aren't sure where they're going. the georgetown university researchers say these shoppers just feel they have to be out shopping this week. i feel that way about online.

she's had a series of health problems, but not missed any time on the bench since joining the court 21 years ago. and smash and grab burglars on camera. this is in north austin, using a pickup truck to plow through the rear wall. more than a dozen people jumped out and helped themselves to expensive merchandise, and took off leaving the truck behind which turned out to be stolen. and it was not a pleasant end to the thanksgiving festivities for a group in greenville, south carolina. they gathered outside for a photo, the deck gave way, sending 29 people to the concrete below. they fell about 15 feet and six people had serious injuries including broken bones. a much more serious problem for a family in washington staid, a slide threatening to drag their house into a river. it's about 50 feet from the
