there's been a steady crowd here ever since in this 13-hour shopping marathon. and they're off. millions of americans flooding stores overnight. chaos ensuing in houston. watch, as grown men fling themselves on top of flatscreen tvs at a walmart, refusing to let go. officers pulling them to their feet, breaking up one melee, only to have another fight feet away. in new york city, at macy's flagship store, a sea of 15,000 people flocking in when their doors opened. this woman witnessed a skirmish over a barbie doll. >> the girl socked the guy in the face. >> reporter: at best buy in chicago, this tv for $200 sold out just minutes after the doors opened. >> televisions have been really hot. phones have been really hot.

computers and tablets. >> reporter: this year, the savings and the black friday battles starting early. kmart opening its doors at the crack of dawn on thanksgiving thursday. now this hour 25 of a 40-hour shopping marathon. >> when we come out early, we probably save about $500. >> reporter: in times square, right next to the "gma" studio, parents going into toys are us at 5:00 a.m. to get the deals and hot new toys. >> good deals. >> reporter: a busy start to what's sure to be a busy holiday shopping season. and there hasn't been any issue here at macy's in chicago. but a lot of hearts beating quickly for the deals. they are open tonight until 10:00 p.m. and open again tomorrow morning. >> thank you. there are two kinds of shoppers, those willing to brave the crowds, and those like me, who prefer to sit home in sweatpants or man spanx and buy

free shippings offer. i was out last night, i was in harlem, opening the doors. and lots of shoppers and families. and as you might expect, electronics were popular. we were selling 1800 tvs per minute. video games, 2,000 each minute. families were out around the country shopping last night and we're off to a good start. it's exciting to see how the consumer is reacting. >> during last year's holiday season, hackers stole credit and debit card data from 40 million customers. how can you assure it's safe this year? >> this is a full-time focus, 52 weeks a year. we have a great team and systems. we're out there making sure, we're monitoring and detecting and making sure we're defending data security. >> you're making a run at competing with amazon on their own turf, if cyber space is

to ferguson, missouri, where protesters are gearing up for major action today. and abc's alex perez is there with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there have been no major protests here in the last 24 hours. but a group of demonstrators are taking on a new target, targeting black friday shoppers. overnight, groups of protesters walked into a handful of target and walmart stores and began chanting, disrupting shopping for a few minutes, and then walked out. there were no arrests overnight, but some stores were anticipating this and chose to not open in the overnight hours. now the national guard still patrolling the streets of ferguson and with all of the unrest earlier this week, many hoping that peace lasts through the weekend. plau? >> yeah, merchandisers preparing for these sort of distractions. alex perez, thank you. and hundreds of thousands of americans are facing yet another day in the dark. wind and snow from wednesday's

nor'easter destroyed power lines across the area, ruining thanksgiving for so many. damage so extensive in some spots that repairs could take several days. and california's famous pacific coast highway is open again after repair crews shut off this geyser, a result of a broken water main in malibu. the leak also created a massive sinkhole. and in chicago, another group of smash and grab thieves caught on camera. using a pickup truck to plow through a wall. more than a dozen people jumped out and ran off with armloads of merchandise, leaving the stolen truck behind. and this is a tough act to follow for anyone else singing the national anthem at a sports event. listen to this as 12-year-old quintavious johnson crushing it yesterday before the detroit and chicago game. ♪ and the home of the brave

suffering one too many concussions. the 22-year-old was last seen around 2:00 a.m. wednesday morning, telling his roommates he wanted to clear his head, then leaving the apartment. he recently posted vines showcasing his fun-loving side -- >> she's back, baby. >> reporter: went missing after not showing up for football practice, something his friends and family say he never does. his sister, sophia, telling "the columbus dispatch," i've seen him sick as a dog go to practice. he's always on schedule. the 6'5", 270-pound karageorge is a defensive lineman and former wrestler for the buckeyes and has a history of concussions. while the family says osu has consistently cared for him, his sister says we're very worried he's not himself and he maybe doesn't know what's going on. hits like these in tackle football can carry the same force as a bowling ball being dropped on a player's head from eight feet.

>> over time, cumulative concussions and sub-concussive hits that can result in concussions are very concerning. >> reporter: he last was on the field against penn state in october. as i ohio state football team prepared for tomorrow's game against long-time rival michigan, they will have to do so without their teammate. according to his sister, he doesn't have his wallet or id on him. he left without the motorcycle. the school isn't commenting, karageorge was one of 24 seniors set to be honored in saturday's game. his family is hoping for his safe return at this point, guys. they want him home safe. >> understandably. >> thanks, ryan. and now to two young boys lucky to be alive this morning. buried alive when a snowplow accidently pushed a wall of snow over them, trapping them for hours. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> trapped in a snowbank, two little babies. >> reporter: the two children safe after this dramatic

thanksgiving rescue caught on tape. watch as police officers, relatives and neighbors frantically try to dig the 9 and 11-year-old boys out, trapped at least four hours under more than seven feet of snow. it began 6:00 p.m. wednesday night. the two cousins were building a snow fort in a parking lot when an oncoming plow drove by pushing more snow on top of the boys, burying them. when they didn't return home by 10:00, family and friends searched for them before they called police close to an hour later. a shovel sticking out of the snow drew an officer's attention. >> he picked up the shovel and found what appeared to be a child's boot and started digging. >> reporter: they tried to uncover the boys. subfreezing temperatures set in. the community coming out to help. some digging with shovels. others clawing at the snow with their bare hands. finally around 2:00 a.m., the boys were pulled from the snow,

cold but otherwise okay. and taken to the hospital to recover. the mother of one of the boys taking to instagram to show gratitude. "i am thankful my son and nephew are here. it i'm very thankful to have these two safe at home alive. #lovethesetwoboys." thankful indeed. they are in the hospital with their families, but we are told they are in good health. it's a true thanksgiving day miracle. something you don't think about happening. they were just playing in the snow. >> freak accident. so glad they're okay. >> thank you. and we move on to burt reynolds, the star of "boogie nights" and "smokey and the bandit." turns out, he has hit hard times and to raise a little cash, he's writing a book, teaching acting classes, and holding an auction where you will not believe the personal items he's willing to sell off. here's cecilia vega. >> reporter: he's the hollywood

for seven years. the disappearance and murder of suburban super mom, paige birgfeld. but it was her double life that led them to the suspect. according to the sheriff, 63-year-old lester ralph jones was a client of her escort service. that's right, the single mom of three by day was a madam by night. they suspected jones immediately. >> lester jones acted alone, and we believe that's the case. >> reporter: police learned the divorced soccer mom had been running an escort service called models, inc. for years under the name carrie. friends and family in grand junction, colorado, were shocked. >> i think she realized that we would not approve. >> reporter: they knew her as the cheerful woman who sold cookware and taught children's dance lessons. >> people have to do what they have to do. >> reporter: police say jones, who was arrested for abduction

in 1999 and accused of kidnapping another woman that year admitted he was her cliend but that he didn't kill her. even after her torched car was found blocks away from the rv dealership he worked in 2007 shortly following her disappearance. after that, he quit the rv business and became a truck driver. but even after her remains were found in 2012, it still wasn't enough for an arrest until last week. >> there was no one else who could be responsible for paige birgfeld's disappearance and subsequent murder. >> jones faces charges of murder, second-degree murder and kidnapping. he has a $2 million bond. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> wild story. thank you. and we move on. they have been impossible to miss. throughout the holiday season, video after video of thieves stealing packages right off of people's front porches. this morning, a satisfying revenge story about a dad who turned to social media to track

down a crook. and reena ninan is here with the story. >> good morning, more and more across america, people are finding first class mail met with second class behavior. these days, to catch a package thief all you need is a camera and friends on social media. it is the season of giving, but for this texas thief, it's about the take. caught on this home surveillance camera taking a package. straight off jeff turner's front do doorstep. >> reporter: the package was just delivered. the thief swoops in and watch as he uses his sweatshirt to cover his face, looks around, snatches the package and flees but not before taking a quick glance at the security camera. >> the more i thought about it, the madder i got. i said, you know what? i'm going to post this to a social media site. >> reporter: he turned to friends and neighbors, posting screen grabs of the surveillance footage on his neighborhood watch facebook page. to see if anyone recognized the

crook. >> half a dozen of my neighbors are on it. and they saw the post. they came over to me and said, hey, i know who this kid is. >> reporter: turns out it was a local teenager. turner took mercy and didn't go to police. and that stolen package with the houston rockets sweater inside was finally returned to its rightful owner, his son, jared, just in time for thanksgiving. it's a crime we're seeing more and more this holiday season. check out this pennsylvania man pinching a package left on a porch while juggling his 1-year-old daughter in his other arm. and a woman in detroit, boldly escaping with a package under each arm. with the postal services gearing up to deliver a whopping 1.3 billion packages between thanksgiving and christmas, 10% more than last year, police said expect more holiday bandits out on the hunt. how do you bust a bandit? sign up for delivery alerts, or send yourself a decoy package with a dirty diaper.

relevant and topical issues that are existing outside of the cinema. what we find at this point in the storytelling, a society at war with itself. >> we're getting a lot of questions for you on social media. first we have one from cassandra on instagram. she's asking if you could play another character other than your own, who would it be? >> you know, it wouldn't be effie, i don't know if the wigs would suit me and the heels. i think peeta's story is a really fascinating one. and josh hutcherson does a great job portraying him. it's a fantastically wild arc. it's kind of reminiscent to me of the story of post-traumatic stress disorder. and it's the story of a warrior dealing with the consequences of war. and trying to reclaim himself and the things this he loves and holds dear. i think it's a really thrilling character. i think maybe i'd tackle that one.

welcome back, everyone. thanksgiving dinner, might be a fond memory after the guests have gone home. but the leftovers linger on. and emeril lagasse is here to join us with the ideas for upgrading the uneaten turkey. >> thank you. >> we are all still recovering from the turkey hangover. i'm not in the mood for turkey. but you have a wild version. >> it's amazing to me how many people wait for the leftovers the day after. and we've done, over the years, some really amazing things. and we are going to do a casserole today. really simple, using our turkey and a few other simple ingredients. >> bacon? >> yes. >> any time bacon is involved, it's going to be delicious. >> exactly. i have cut bacon i've rendered down. and the next ingredient is mushrooms. i have shiitake mushrooms.

to that, add onion and celery and thyme. they will cook down. now once that cooks maybe about 6 to 8 minutes. >> okay. >> then what we're going to do, we're going to make the roux. which is using flour, you can use cornstarch. you can add the flour, stir that in and fold that in. >> i'm folding. >> it will start to cook down. >> oops. >> that's okay. >> we have a mushroom -- >> once the flour cooks, add some white wine and we're going to add some chicken broth. and this is really what's going to make -- this is really what's going to make the sort of this mushroom gravy, if you will. this is what i have. >> this is smelling amazing. this is cooked down. >> this is cooked down. after this, you can see we have a nice sauce. now what we're going to do, i wanted to use spinach today.

we have spinach, and then we take our leftover turkey -- >> there's the turkey, cubed. >> cubed up. now maybe you had a rice dressing. maybe you had some sort of stuffing. you could do that as well. i have rice to incorporate, and then, of course, cheese. then what happens is we butter the casserole. >> butter's good. >> we pour the mixture in the casserole. 350 degrees, bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes. it gets all bubbly. >> can i try it? >> yes. all bubbly and delicious. you have another meal. you have a meal for the weekend. >> right. >> you could make this the day after, serve it saturday night for dinner. right? isn't it delicious? >> you want a bite. i see there's also a turkey wrap. >> well, here's the thing. this is, you know, you have tortillas, what you can do, and i love this, i take a little bit

of the stuffing, a little bit of the turkey, a little bit of the cranberry sauce, lettuce and make your own little wrap. or you can just chop the lettuce and have a chopped salad. >> couple of options, wrap it or put it in a salad. >> exactly. >> i made ham, can i use the same concept for ham? >> perfect. >> all right. >> and you can add to that, if you like tomatoes, onion, red onion, iceberg lettuce, you can get as creative as you want. the casserole, i love. you can incorporate a whole bunch of leftovers. >> this is fantastic. >> isn't it delicious? >> last year you went out to dinner for thanksgiving. >> worst mistake. >> this year you cooked specifically to have the leftovers. >> i always cook, but last year for some reason we did go out, and i never had any leftovers. this is not good. >> we love you. thank you so much. we appreciate it. >> thank you so much. >> so good. for all of emeril's recipes and
