it's 8:00 on this saturday, november 29. thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. rain continues to fall down throughout parts of the bay. let's accepted it over to lisa argen tracking the accuweather forecast. hi, lisa. hi, chris. it was pouring an hour ago. it is moving into the central valley pushing a little bit further south and it will continue to do that throughout the morning hours. so as we go in a little bit closer, notice some of the yellows here right around 101, so some pretty good rain and slick roadways with poor visibility down along the coast, santa cruz with some monstrous

decision in ferguson, missouri, turned dangerous at union square. sky 7 ht shows police lined up around macy's as some of the demonstrators tried to smash windows. they already attacked the front glass at crate and barrel and battered in the windshield of a meter maid vehicle. the group moved on marching along market street toward the mission leaving behind even more damage. in the mission district, a police line kept protesters from advancing. just a block away officers were face-to-face with protesters. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard were with them through it all. >> reporter: several hundred protesters marched peacefully down market street demanding justice in the case of michael brown. >> this is an issue for all of us. if there's no justice to be had, then there's going to be no peace. >> reporter: many take issue with black friday saying this is not the time for holiday shopping. >> mike brown's family is going to have a horrible holiday

season this year, and i feel very sorry for them. >> reporter: but 20 minutes into the march, things turned you ug. protesters took down the light post on stockton street as the group headed toward union square. but a line of police in riot gear prevented the demonstrators from gettinging into union square. sky 7 hd shows the scale and drama of the scanoff. some protesters doubled back to powell street, but police were there, too. glass bottles were thrown at officers, hotel stratford manager was scared. you're thinking, are they going to smash the windows to my hotel here, right? >> yeah, definitely. they're smashing, i'm running. there's no way i'm staying here, you know. it's definitely -- in my opinion, i get it. i get why they're protesting. it's just not the right way to do it. >> reporter: police were on the run again as protesters headed to farrell street smashing windows at macy's and crate and barrel this trucks was vandalized, all its windows

broken. police blocked the group from moving past fifth street. several arrests were made. caught in the middle of it all holiday shoppers like vanessa hernandez. >> it's time to spend money in san francisco, be and i want to leave home. it's crazy. ridiculous. >> reporter: the westfield shopping center closed early refusing to let any more shoppers in after 7:30 p.m. as the protests continued outside n. san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. and here's just one example of damage in the miss district. this picture is from a restaurant on valencia street. the diner who sent us these pictures says a group just smashed the windows as they walked by. nobody was hurt but people inside, as you might expect, were quite scared. many of those who came out it to union square last night to protest did keep their demonstration peaceful. this is video taken by one of them. the protesters held you up blue neon lit letters spelling out the words black lives matter,

while chanting all lives matter, and hands up, don't shoot. >> mike brown didn't have to die. >> the day of protests actually began in oakland hours earlier when a small group caused big disruptions on b.a.r.t. they chained themselves together and to two different trains at the west oakland station. when they refused to move, b.a.r.t. shut down the transbay tube stranding people on both sides of the bay. >> my ancestors were in chains worse than this, so this is nothing. >> i believe the message but it should be done in another way. >> it took about two hours for police to unchain and arrest the 14 protesters and get trains moving again. in ferguson, officers in riot gear broke up a crowd. 15 people were arrested. this happened across from the ferguson police department where

demonstrators have gathered for days. another protest will be held at walmart in oakland today following black friday protests of the retailer nationwide. demonstrators rallied outside 1,600 walmart stores across the country to protest low wages. employees and their supporters want the company to pay its workers a minimum of $15 an hour and to give them consistent full-time schedules. >> i'm here the day after thanksgiving, the day we give thanks for all the things we have in our lives and i'm keenly aware a lot of walmart work ers can't afford that holiday dinner and are making the hard choices between being at home with they are families or having to work a few more extra hours to be able to afford those christmas presents coming up. walmart says that employs more people and pays a fair, competitive wage. today's protest gets under way at 11:00 on the walmart on edgewater drive in oakland . the chp is warning anyone at

that big sideshow in oakland this week that they may soon face charges. sky 7 hd captured the sideshow as it was happening at the port of oakland late wednesday night. drivers did doughnuts and other dangerous stunts just a few feet away from spectators. the chp was already mobilized for another night of ferguson-related protests when they got a tip about the sideshow. they rushed to the port and blocked the road. several arrests were made that night, and the chp says there will be more. officials say they he plan to pursue charges against roughly 200 motorists. on lookers could also face charges for aiding and abetting. >> we interviewed everyone that was there. we know who was driving what cars. we're going to use the video from our aircraft to then link that to put charges on at a later date. >> the chp impounded roughly a dozen vehicles involved in the sideshow including a stolen car that was set on fire. officers think the flames may have been fueled by firearms inside.

8:07 is our time now on your saturday morning and here in the bay area shopping was less kay ot kay ot chaotic but pretty busy. in hayward shoppers he at the southland mall circling the parked parking lot looking for spaces. others reached for their phones instead. ibm digital analytics reports online sales were up more than 8% this black friday and that half of those sales were made on mobile devices. so how did brick and mortar stores bring in the shoppers yesterday? abc 7 news reporter alan wang has details. >> reporter: 30,000 to 40,000 customers shopped at sun valley mall in concord. >> yesterday was clearly stronger than last year on thanksgiving day and today we don't have any numbers yet, but just from the crowds that we've seen and the bags that we see people carrying, it looks like it's going to be very strong. >> you know how they have all those ads in the morning, come get the tvs, all that stuff is

charge to residents at five locations but you have to bring your own shovel. abc7news.com. 8:14 the time. two boys were trapped in a snow pile in upstate knock for more than seven hours. they said they heard their friends and family calling for them but couldn't answer loudly enough. wednesday night a snowplow clearing a new york parking lot were accidentally buried ahiv. the 9 and 11-year-old cousins had gone out to build snow for it ts and hadn't returned home by 10:00 p.m. a police officer searching for the two spotted a shovel half buried in the snow he and started digging. >> keep digging. keep digging. call an ambulance. >> the community rushed it to

help dig the boys out. some used their hands. both suffered from the cold but were okay. the tree lighting event returns after a three-year hiatus. the tree lighting event will feature tasty treats, hot chocolate, carollers and santa claus, of course. all set in a winter wonder land with 8,000 square feet of ice. today's tree litting gets under way at the walnut creek. christmas in the park kicked off last night in san jose. the celebration started with the city's 35th annual tree lighting. they kept entertained with holiday tunes. don't forget you can join abc 7's spencer christian for a special presentation of the pier 39 tree lighting celebration.

that special airs tomorrow right here on abc 7. for many families their top priority was shopping for a christmas tree yesterday. david louie looks at the tradition in the bay area. a post thanksgiving tradition in the santa cruz mountains. customers don't have to look for bargains. every tree, whatever the size, is $50. is he the only issue is finding the right one. do trees express any feelings as you cut them? >> i sure hope not. hopefully it's a good feeling. >> reporter: five neighbors have made this trek annually. five families five trees and one goal. >> big and fluffy. that's all we look for. big and fluffy. >> reporter: that's a similar goal for shoppers looking at

little damp with mist and drizzle. not much going on here. your activity was through the overnight hours but novato a little shower down through highway 29, innapa and 37 on th west side. in the sierra nevada a mix of snow be aand rain right now. live pictures showing snow but looking at rain and temperatures it in the 40s around blue canyon. so truckee is at 32 degrees with cloudy skies. winter weather advisory going through the next couple of hours. so the snow will be tapering off but, boy, we've had some wind gusts over 80 miles an hour. lake level has picked up a couple of inches. take a look in the higher elevations looks good. much more is needed, of course. we will get more throughout the days into next week as well. 57 downtown with 50-minute at the lays at sfo. wait until you see that picture. 52 there. and here is a look where the

clouds are blanket iing the cit and you, too, have been on the dry side throughout the morning hours. you had your rain overnight. 55 in fair field. it's also 55 in livermore. they picked up nearly an inch in the santa cruz mountains. look at this ominous picture of sfo. a few peeks of sun here and there. on and off rain showers, the focus in the south bay. more rain overnight tonight through early tomorrow and then a break late tomorrow and heavier rain tuesday into wednesday with the strong eest storm heading our way on tuesday. so here is a look at that little impulse that continue to push on through the south bay. that will will offer a few more hours of showers, which is good news, and this is going to take you through the weekend. so let's go hour by hour here. you'll notice 12:00 moe st of t activity pushing south. the east bay, san francisco r, then through the afternoon hours from santa rosa, livermore, and

inadmissibility of the case due to a technicality. mubarak was convicted and sentenced to life in presideiso 2012, but the verdict was overturned on appeal. the dismissal of charges sparked anger from many people particularly family members killed in the 2011 protests. mubarak is serving a separate three-year sentence for embezzlement of public funds. happening today there will be a memorial service in maryland for a surgeon who died of ebola after treating patients in west after rica. dr. martin solia died in omaha. his body was cremated. he didn't receive aggressive treatment until nearly two weeks after he developed ebola symptoms. experts say that delay is what likely made it impossible to save his life. he was a permanent u.s. resident but had previously lived in sierra leone. back here at home it looks like state senator mark leno had

will not run for mayor against ed lee next year. according to the "san francisco chronicle," leno has decided that now is not the time to run despite being approached by residents upset about the direction of the city under the current mayor ed lee. in particular residents have voiced their concerns about rising rents and the influx of it tech companies. a poll indicated that leno could have beaten him in a matchup. a vicious attack of an uber driver in san francisco happened last weekend at 18th avenue and clement in the richmond district. an uber driver told police he was taking the passenger to the intersection at 2:00 a.m. sunday when the man sudden ly moved frm the back seat to the front seat of the car. that's when the suspect attacked the driver. he called police who eventually arrested the suspect. the driver suffered a broken nose and other facial injuries. san francisco uber has suspended operations after a big legal

setback with the company there. a nevada district court issued a preliminary injunction this week preventing the company from doing business in the state. a judge sided with regulators who raised regulatory concerns. taxi companies and state officials argued that uber didn't face the same stringent requirements as traditional cabs. uber says the shutdown could cost nearly 1,000 jobs. nevada is the first state to outright suspend uber from operating. 8:33 is our time. also happening today a youth basketball tournament will honor a b.a.r.t. police officer killed in the line of duty. the all saints catholic youth organization will dedicate its tournament to tommy smith who was accidentally killed in january by a fellow officer while they were searching an apartment. smi smith's father will also be honored. sergeant smith previously attended the all saints school in hayward and was also active in catholic youth organization sports. today's memorial basketball tournament is from 10:00 to 5:00 at the parrish gym on second

street in hayward. as you begin your holiday shopping, small businesses are hoping you don't spend all your money at the mall or online. today there's a nationwide campaign to encourage you to shop small. carolyn tyler has the details. >> reporter: stores on filmore street will stay open late on saturday and this one will have a fashion show. it's designed to generate excitement about a shopping event that comes after black friday and before cyber monday. >> this brings special attention. this campaign began back in 2010 and is becoming a welcome tradition for small businesses all over the bay area and throughout the nation. seven out of ten americans have heard of small business saturday and those who participated last

accuweather forecast. well, black friday was more of an orange and black friday for san francisco fans. the team has picked the date to be again selling single game tickets for the upcoming season. yesterday morning fans lined up early outside at&t park to get the best seats. only individual tickets for the first three months of the season, mini plans and season tickets are on sale right now. tickets for the remaining part of the year won't be released until fan fest in february. this afternoon renowned race horse california chrome is hoping for one more big win to close out his up-and-down year. the chestnut colt will try to salvage the season, the first time chrome will run on turf. workouts have not shown he has taken to the craft. if he wins, he could be named horse of the year at the he eclipse awards in january. chrome lost the final leg of horse racing's triple crown after finishing fourth in the belmont stakes. he also finished third in the breeders' cup classic earlier

shower activity. so 152 and 01 heavy. with santa cruz and capito la in the act, davenport has been very wet. the waves are huge all the way up and down the coast. we are looking at an advisory there. some scattered light rain showers this morning and some wet pavement with fog, santa rosa in the sierra nevada. it's been a wet rain and snow mix. truck yee at 42. you can see the snow here and the winter weather advisory last seen throughout the next couple of hours. we picked up a foot of snow at donner pass. two inches at bear valley. a look at higher elevations, you can see how wet the water content is. we're looking at 56 in redwood city. 48 in morgan hill. that's been the cool spot all morning long. airport delays stacking up the last couple can of hours.

beautiful shot, san francisco, with some cloudy skies and a few peeks of the sun. the numbers ranging from the upper 50s for the most part. 55 santa rosa and livermore. so down around the beach, it will be dangerous here with the high waves but the showers will be mainly in the south bay, spotty throughout the bay area today. so on and off heavier rain tonight into early tomorrow. then a break late tomorrow and looks like the biggest system waiting and cueing up offshore should move in by tuesday morning. here is a look at that system, that little impulse that continues to push in. it will push south. and we'll have the on and off rain showers throughout the day. looks like the overnight is particularly wet. as we go through the next few hours you'll see the rain showers from san jose into santa cruz 12:00. spotty showers throughout the rest of the bay. this is 5:00 p.m. looks like the main activity happening after 8:00 tonight. this is 3:00 in the morning.

pockets of heavier rain all throughout the bay. when you wake up tomorrow if you're thinking about a jog or a bike ride, well, maybe not so much because it will be raining through the 8:00 hour into noontime and then by the afternoon a few breaks out there. when that pushes on through, 1-3 inches central coast and the urban areas with 3-5 inches coastal hills and much of the north bay. so this will definitely make a dent in our drought. it's not going to bust the drought by any means. but it certainly helps. and as we look at the s ocal, southern california not getting into the act yet. in fact, they'll see the rain tuesday with that bigger system. but the rain and snow mix throughout the day today in the sierra nevada picked up two inches. that's kind of fun. fremont, san jose, 59 half moon bay. a wet day for cal and the accuweather seven-day forecast shows the heavier rain tonight into tomorrow. a little break on monday. more heavy rain tuesday,
