in fact, 1.3 million travelers were expected to pass through sfo over the course of the holiday weekend. nationwide 2.6 million people expected to take to the skies today. another 2.4 million travelers are expected to fly home tomorrow. 6:04 is our time. the officer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager in fergeson, missouri has resigned. yesterday darren wilson announced his resignation effective immediately. last monday a grand jury decided not to issue charges against him for the death of 18-year-old michael brown. in a letter wilson said he hopes his resignation will allow the community to heal. we will have reaction to wilson's decision coming up in the next half-hour. >> more demonstrations were held last night in ferguson. protesters gathered outside in the street in front of the police station. [chanting] >> and in suburban st. louis, protesters laid down on the floor of a mall and chanted "indict that cop." it was the second straight day

of mall protests. >> here in san francisco, crews were busy cleaning up after protests turned violent. sky 7hd was overhead when protesters upset over the grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri, tried to disrupt a tree lighting ceremony at union square friday. but a calmer seen last night. tiffany has details. >> bright red tape and boards cover the crate & barrel windows. customers inside experienced the violence firsthand. >> some children were really upset and distraught by the activities and we took them here. >> the store manager hopes the destruction won't deter holiday shoppers. one jewelry store lost all business. the gate stayed down after the store windows got blasted. bottles still littered the sidewalk. perhaps an accomplice to this huge hole. beretta's name didn't protect the restaurant.

this u-report video shows the vandalism in process. the damage shrouded in plastic. at bank of america plywood serves as door and windows. radio shack had looting and broken windows. all the union square and mission district damage, the result of a peaceful march ending in chaos. common straytors voiced their dissatisfaction with the police officer who shot michael brown, then at the turned to destruction. they tried to disrupt the tree lighting ceremony at union square. sky video hd captured it in progress. >> people launched bottles and bricks at police. two officers were hit. one required stitches at the hospital. police released the number of arrests made on monday. tiffany wilson, abc7 news. in a statement yesterday, the mayor ed lee said, quote,

those who co-op meaningful demonstration force the purposes of vandalism, looting and harming police officers, disrespect the memory of michael brown and diminish the voices we need to hear right now. this behavior will not be tolerated and those responsibility will be held accountable and prosecuted." a bike shop owner in oakland's neighborhood is thanking neighbors and friends for making sure his store was open for the busy shopping weekend. at the tip-top bike shop. two glass doors were busted and the security gate broken after protests last week. owners had to find people to fix the glass over the holiday, which was quite expensive. the security door remains busted. of course, they believe the damage could have been considerably worse it not for the help of friends and strangers. >> some of our friends and a good samaritan stood in front of them and stopped them from continuing. what could have been a very, very bad night, was merely an unfortunate night. >> tip top reopened in time for friday.

san francisco police are trying to find a group of young women accused in a robbery spree. it began after 7:00 last night at union square. witnesses say six women, who appeared to be in their 20s, stole clothes from victoria secret and "forever 21." the 911 caller described them as rainbow girls because they were wearing bright colored clothing. there were similar robings guy a robberies by a gafg last year. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information lead to the arrest for a murder of a teacher. david ruenzel was out hiking at the huckleberry reserve when two men robbed him and shot him at close range. the police are looking for two men who witnesses saw on the trail just before the shooting. this is the sketch of the first

man. here's a look at the other guy. the police are calling the two men persons of interest. >> a bart police officer killed in the line of duty was honored last night with the game he loved. the family of sergeant tommy smith was emotional at the tommy smith basketball tournament in haywood yesterday. it was held in honor of sergeant tommy smith, who was accidentally shot by a colleague in january while serving a warrant in dublin. the catholic youth organization presented smith's family with a special pennant, trophy and pictures, that are all three decades old. >> for my mom it's special. a picture of her with dad, it's incredible. >> the tournament was named tom smith, who was athletic director at all saints school. >> we have more rain this

more than 110,000 causes will be represented. today good shop sunday has raised more than $11 million for charity. the first small business saturday in san francisco was held yesterday. a fashion show featuring clothing from local designers in stores was held on fillmore street. it's a nationwide effort to get people to shop at independent, locally owned stores after thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season. >> when you shop at the small business, so much more of the money goes back into the small community to contribute to the schools and we want to make sure people are giving back to those people with their support. >> 20 stores up and down fillmore took part in last night's event and people who attended received passports which after visiting different stores coredeemed for free stuff. big sales on black friday isn't pulling in customers like they used to. americans spent $9 billion at stores. that's down 7% from last year.

but it's too early to call the holiday shopping season a dud. they said early sales on thanksgiving jumped 24% and the biggest shopping day is still to come. that's the saturday before christmas. tomorrow is cyber monday. millions and millions of americans will log on and start shopping, entering their credit and debit card information without hesitation, but with security breaches at stores like home depot, target, k-mart, even the u.s. postal service, how secure is your information these days? rebecca jarvis has some answers. >> reporter: in the 1983 movie "war games" matthew broderick was the ultimate hacker. child's play by today's standard. listen to shark tank as robin who made his thousands in cyber security. >> there are hackers everywhere, but here's the beauty if you are a criminal from cyber crime. it's the only crime where i can steal everything you own without physically having to be there.

and police across the bay area are offering tips to protect residents from package theft this holiday season. they recommend having packages delivered to your workplace or somewhere where it can be received in person. also request that the shipper require a signature confirmation and provide delivery instruction to the shippers so that packages can be left at a safe location out of sight out of the streets. people are also urging people to sign up for delivery alerts. frequent flyers won't have to wait until cyber monday to score great deals on air travel. alaskan airlines biggest sale of the year begins today. it kicks off at 4:00 p.m. pacific time and travelers have until december 8th to purchase travel between january 6th and march 4th. alaskan airlines, along with it's partner, regional airlines, serves more than 100 cities nationwide. >> i know what i will be doing later on this afternoon, lisa.

>> check that out for sure. a little more rain and significantly more rain through the overnight hours. maybe you missed it or slept through it. but scattered showers as another wave heads our way throughout the first half of your sunday. but we will see more rain today than we did yesterday. it was basically a cloudy day. live doppler 7hd focusing right now on the north bay with the coastal hills, and even san francisco, richmond district, getting a little bit of light rain but it's a little heavier as you cross the golden gate bridge. in the east bay light showers have been falling from the delta through core deal yeah, vallejo, and martinez you saw stronger showers. around highway 101, novato, fairfax through san rafael, and we are looking at a little bit of rain southward. on the peninsula, over through sunnyvale scattered light showers. the south bay milking up maybe .01 throughout the early morning

run and evergreen looking a little wet. it looks impressive offshore. we are thunderstorms about 61 miles west of the central coast. we won't see the thunderstorms, and we will continue to see the rain head our way lifting up through the north bay and the coastal hills getting the most throughout your sunday. here's a look from san francisco. our roof camera. 55 downtown. it's 49 in morgan hill. half moon bay a mild 57. emeryville. cloudy skies, light drizzle out there, 52 about a few showers up by the delta. and the east bay this morning, 54 concord and livermore. good morning to you. nice-looking view from our exploratorium camera with the cloud cover. showers this morning a little bit more in the way of more concentrated rain through the late morning hours, early afternoon. then we get a break. the stronger, warmer system with some pretty gusty winds heads our way tuesday, right on through wednesday. so 24-hour totals, we had all of that nice rain yesterday in the south bay.

.7 for san jose. nearly a half-inch los gatos. napa over a half in and a third through mountain view. just over a tenth oakland and san francisco. our radar and satellite picture clearly depicts the next little system that is going to push through throughout your sunday. so this system today will bring the most up through the coastal hills, novato. but san francisco and oakland can pick up a half-inch. a third of an inch by the delta, perhaps around morgan hill and lesser amounts with the rain shadow effect in san jose. livermore maybe about a tenth inch of rain n a big snowmaker and it is warm. we are looking at a rain-snow mix again lake level. 2 to 7 inches above 6,000 feet. the next system is going to be above 7,000 feet that we see about 1 to 2 feet of snow. so here it is. this morning through 10:00, 11:00, you can see all the shower activity. right on through noontime. still somehowry through 2:00, 3:00. then by the evening hours a break somewhat. here it is 9:00.

then we get the weak ridge that's going to push through the area tomorrow. that's going to bring the southerly winds and relatively dry conditions tore all of tomorrow. then it's this system that's really going to pack a punch come tuesday and wednesday. you know, with this one we could see some flooding problems and maybe even a downed power line or downed trees. so it continues into wednesday. then after that we get our break. low 60s again today from vallejo through morgan hill. accuweather seven-day forecast then, a break tomorrow. heavier rain tuesday with the wind on wednesday. this is a warmer, wetting storm. a few showers into thursday perhaps and then we are dry with partly cloudy skies friday and saturday. you can see what is showing up live on doppler 7hd anytime with abc7 news weather app. it's free on google play or the apple app store. we have more information on our website. that's definitely the thing to have if you don't have it already.

be careful. not a lost rain on the peninsula. as we take you over into parts of the east bay, east of union city, looking at a heavier cell. higher elevations. finally into the south bay down through morgan hill, some spotty bris he will. offshore we saw the thunderstorms. those will not be pushing into the bay area but this wave of moisture will be. if we take you through the next couple of hours, you will notice that we get more green and more yellow on the map as this wave pushes through. here we are at 9:00 and it's going to take really the bulk of the day. so it will be much somehowry in nature today than it was yesterday. we will look at a little bit of break before we get a much stronger system coming our way on tuesday. chris. >> thank you so much, lisa. a reminder for motorists to be careful on the wet roads this morning after a man flipped his car over while driving in the east bay. it happened around 1:00 this morning on lone tree way in antioch. police say the man was driving

too fast on the wet road, lost control and hit a median. the car then took down a light pole before flipping over. driver suffered minor injuries. he was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. ferguson police officer darren wilson has resigned following a grand jury's decision not to indict him. wilson had been on administrative leave ever since he shot and killed teenager michael brown back in august. abc news reporter michelle franson has the latest. >> four months ago officer darren wilson was thrust into the national spotlight when he fatally shot michael brown. an unarmed teenager in ferguson, missouri. the killing ignited riots, and for several months the nation remained on edge while waiting for a grand jury decision on whether or not to hand up an indictment against the police officer. >> no probable cause exists to file any charge against officer wilson. >> that decision unleashed more protests from the jury and around the country through thanksgiving week.

wilson had been an administrative leave since the august shooting. since then the ferguson police department received threats of violence if he remained on the force, prompting wilson to say this in his resignation statement. >> "i have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the city of ferguson at risk. and adding this, "it is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to healing >> but in an exclusive interview with abc's george stephanopoulos a few days ago, wilson defended his actions, saying he had a clean conscious and would not do anything differently. >> i just did my job. i followed my training. >> brown's mother called wilson's explanation of the shooting insulting and disrespectful. now it remains to be seen if wilson's resignation helps calm protests like this one on saturday, or ease tension in the community and throughout the nation. michelle franson, abc news, new york.

>> take look at this. it's the hug shared around the world. a 12-year-old black boy hugging a white police officer at a ferguson protest in ferguson last week. the boy was crying holding up a sign offering free hugs. the officer approached him and asked him why he was crying. the boy said he was concerned about the level of police brutality toward young black kids. officer said, quote, yes, i know, i'm sorry. then he asked for a hug. young devon take is no stranger to kindness. he celebrated his 11th and 12th birthdays by raising money for charity. this picture was shared on facebook more than 150,000 times in just a few hours. coming up on "this week" more of the fallout on the shooting death of michael brown. abc news will have the latest developments on ongoing protests and the latest move by darren wilson after a grand jury

decided he would not face charges in broken's death. you can catch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00. >> more charges will be filed against a father accused of holding his 14-year-old son captive in georgia. it came to a tearful end at a reunion yesterday. the boy holding tight to his mom. she found him somehow he had been able to send her a text message. he had been living behind a fake wall in the home. the father and others are after charged with false imprisonment and cruelty to children. >> we need to know the who, the what, the where and the why. so to find out exactly what happened is going to be the job of our detectives now. >> the boy will remain in protective custody until tomorrow to make sure he is safe. when a kindergartner at a san francisco school is diagnosed with cancer her teacher went beyond the call of duty to help her learn how to read. in fact, her little classmates

did their part too. abc7 news educational reporter leeann melendez has the heartwarming story of a community coming together to help one of their own. >> nearly a year ago, olive diamond, now a first grader, was diagnosed with t cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. she was quickly pulled out of school to begin treatment. at the time kara cooper was her kindergarten teacher at francis scott key elementary. >> it made me nervous and how we were going to continue her education and how i would keep her learning. >> during one of her visits to the family's home, cooper came up with an idea. >> they had facebook on their computer. i had her working on an ipad at home and at the table with her parents we thought this is something we can do together. >> using two ipads, one at her home and the other in the classroom, the teacher was able to include olive in the daily lessons from the hospital or from home. her classmates knew exactly what to do.

>> she moved around the classroom with us and people who sat in the back or sat next to the table just took the ipad and put it places so she could see. >> her parents say olive never missed a day of instruction. >> she was most fluidly reading certain level books by the end of kindergarten while she was getting aggressive chemo treatments weekly. >> the idea has inspired other teachers to do the same. >> for example, another teacher at the same school was recently diagnosed with cancer. with the use of an ipad, she is now reading to her classroom every day from her home while undergoing chemotherapy. >> she will never forget how she stayed connected to her classmates and how this one teacher did everything she could to keep her connected. >> we never were able to fall. there were really dark days, but we never were alone. >> olive is now a happy first grader with a passion for learning. >> are you happy in school? do you like learning? did you have a good time

more than 1,000 people are expected to gather san francisco today to remember those who lost their lives to h.i.v. and a.i.d.s. golden gate park will host the light in the grove ceremony. during the two days of events marking world's a.i.d.s. day, which is tomorrow, they will display a collection of personal tributes, photos, artwork and keepsakes left by families of loved ones who battled the disease. today's ceremony gets underway at 6:30 at the national a.i.d.s. memorial grove in golden gate park. 6:41 is our time. and weather-wise a lot of people are going to be heading out to the mauls today, getting in some shopping. but the weekend isn't a complete washout. >> no. but we had a surge of moisture last night, a little break, and now more is coming.

through concord. further south it's quieter from haywood on south. and concord it's been wet for you. over towards the peninsula, scattered, very light mist and drizzle from milbrae. highway 280, burlingame and in the south bay you really haven't been too dry. you are still look at light shower activity through hollister and morgan hill. but most of this activity will lift up to the north. we will see anywhere from about a half-inch in san francisco throughout the day today, and about .8 up in in the north bay. definitely this little wave hitting us throughout the north hours. it will continue to push through the bay into the sierra nevada. we will have scattered showers behind it. 53 san francisco. santa rosa, i should say. 52 by the delta and san francisco about to get wet with more showers and rain throughout the morning hours. then we get a break tomorrow. in fact, it's going to feel kind

of balmy out there with southerly winds. then we will look for the biggest system yet to come in later in the morning on tuesday. behind it unstable air. could see some thunderstorms accompanying this system. very heavy rain and gusty winds. here's a look at the 24 hour rainfall totals yesterday. big winners in the south bay from los gatos to san jose. today not as much but a little bit. over half-inch in napa. mountain view picked up a third and san francisco and oakland almost .2. so here's the pacific satellite picture. little piece of energy sitting offshore and getting closer and closer to the coast. there it is present time. that pushes through the morning hours. the rest of the bay area will get into the rain shadow effect with this current system. that means lesser amounts from livermore, antioch and san jose. while the higher elevations of the santa cruz mountains picks up maybe another half-inch. morgan hill perhaps a third. and over a third with this, half

moon bay, half-inch san francisco and the most up toward novato. this is a warm system like the past one, but the warmest still tapping into subtropical moisture on tuesday. but today still some showers and snowflakes above 6,000 feet. 2 to 7 inches expected and light snow down to about 5,000 feet. i want to take you through the next day and a half. here we are right now with the next system. all throughout the morning hours and afternoon we've got the scattered showers, light showers after the wave passes. then right on through 7:00, 8:00, still spotty showers around. that weak area of high pressure builds in tomorrow. so an isolated shower. overall cloudy skies. a mild day and we've been talking about the last system. here it comes. by 11:00 across the bay from marin through the peninsula, right on through the day into the evening commute. and the colder air, unstable air with the low moves in behind it on wednesday. that's what keeps the showers going. today low 60s again from san jose, 62 san mateo and the

the asian art museum is inviting the public to nickname a $3,000 chinese bronze ritual vessel which is shaped like a rhinoceras. they say it's important because few chinese vessels of the bronze age were made to look like animals. the public can suggest a nickname through the end of september by submitting an entry form on the museum's website or in the south court. after staff members choose the top three names, they will allow the public to vote for the winning nickname from among the top three. the prize for submitting one of the top three names includes a museum family membership. 6:57 our time. one last look at the forecast, lisa. >> wait until see this radar image right offshore. a large area of moderate rain. could be some emwed thunderstorms ready to hit and lifting north. you had the light rain here in marin, sonoma, napa. lighter showers in concord, pittsburgh. the east bay, around blackhawk, just some very light mist and
