and veterans here in the u.s. brian ross is here tracking the latest. >> reporter: this is the strongest warning to date about possible isis attacks on members of the u.s. military stations here in the u.s. in a joint intelligence bulletin issued overnight, the fbi and homeland security says isis is spotting and assessing followers in the u.s. who are willing and capable of conducting attacks on current and former members of the u.s. military. officials say they fear copycat attacks based on what happened in canada when two canadian soldiers were killed by young men who said they were isis followers. the fbi bull pin bulletin urges u.s. service personnel to look at any information on their social media accounts that could give information that could attract extremists. some members of u.s. special forces operations have told abc news they already have deactivated facebook and other social media accounts, george.

>> they cannot be too careful. we have this isis affiliate in egypt announcing the killing of another american over the weekend? >> yes, an oil worker by the name of william henderson. though his company says he was killed in august in a carjacking. isis posted pictures of his i.d. and american passport. the fbi is skeptical of the claims but they're investigating. now to the bitter cold. an icy blast. some of coldest weather of the year in the midwest. it's moving east. rob marciano tracking it all. >> good morning, guys. on top of that, we have a very strong system moving into the west. it is causing problems in malibu. an inch and a half of rain near l.a. a mudslide triggered the closure of the pch. there you see it. about 12 cars were marooned at one point. they're trying to prevent this sort of activity in northern

california. that was a burn area in malibu. in north california, they're dropping hay and mulch to try to keep the land from sliding. all of the states will get a lot of this. three to five inches. in some cases. all the way to san diego. happening tonight into tomorrow night. some of the rain will be heavy at times. here's the cold air that robin mentioned. the arctic blast. driving all the way down to the south. minus 18 wind chill in minneapolis. feels like 2 in kansas city. a wintry mix across that area there. we'll talk more about that. a little bit of slick travel. guys, back to you. >> so we shouldn't get used to this mild weather? >> no. it's getting cold here tomorrow. the weather caused disruptions for holiday travel. the biggest problems were man made. overbooking and not enough help at airports. david kerley is at reagan national with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, george. airports will be busy. just shy of 2.5 million people will fly today. almost as many as yesterday, some still trying to get back home. some going back to work. talk to anybody at chicago's

midway airport yesterday, and you will hear a horror story. this morning, another busy travel day after the holiday with hopes this is not repeated. >> this is a security line. >> reporter: a mess at chicago's midway sunday, not caused by snow, rain, or sleet. >> i've been here a total of seven hours. >> reporter: this was a man-made problem on the busiest air travel day of the year. a line that reporter denise whitaker of our seattle affiliate described as a mile long. believe it or not, it was a tsa staffing snafu. not enough officers assigned to work. it snowballed with people grounded for hours. >> we missed our flight by one minute. >> reporter: 4,000 flights delayed in total. 250 canceled. rain in the west. fog in denver forcing more than 40 flights there to divert. >> do you see the fog bank? do you see the ground anywhere? you're above it, aren't you? >> we're above it. we do not see anything.

>> reporter: hard to see stuff in the fog. the good news is the weather should cooperate today. and for the christmas holiday, robin, don't expect a travel week like what we just got through. it should be a little better. >> hopefully so. pack a lot of patience. that's what you need to pack. all right, david, thank you. now to the holiday shopping season. black friday a bit of a bust. retailers are hoping cybermonday will get them back on track. abc's rebecca jarvis is here with more. good morning, rebecca. >> hi, robin. good morning. this is retail's last big push. while they've still got your attention. 127 million of us are expected to shop today. it is cybermonday. the biggest day for online sales of the year. it follows a disappointing black friday sales weekend. in total, americans spent about $ $51 billion over the four-day weekend. but that is down 11% from last year. why the big drop? sales started weeks earlier than ever before. by the time the weekend hit, some had already shopped.

abc's alex perez is in ferguson with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. for the first time since the grand jury decision, skooth schools are back open today. wilson said he stepped down because he feared he would become a target. overnight, st. louis police condemning the actions of the st. louis rams before sunday's game. players raising their hands in the now iconic hands up don't shoot pose, a show of support for the family of michael brown. the st. louis county police association calling the display taste lest and inflammatory to a local station. they demanded a public apology. this capping off a weekend of protests. the protests continuing even after darren wilson officially resigned from the ferguson police department saturday, less than a week after the grand jury decided not to indict him in brown's death. in a letter to the department, wilson citing alleged threats,

saying, i've been told that my continued employment may put the residents and the police officers of the city of ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that i cannot allow. last week, in an exclusive interview with george stephanopoulos, wilson hinted he would not return to work. >> do you really think it's possible? i mean, do you think they would accept me? do you think it would be safe for me? >> reporter: the mayor of ferguson says wilson will not get severance pay. >> as far as the city of ferguson's concerned, we have now served ties with officer darren wilson. moving forward to bring our community together. >> reporter: wilson writing, it is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. >> what's your biggest worry? >> someone hurting my family. or another officer getting hurt. >> reporter: this may not be the end. a justice department investigation is still looming over wilson and the ferguson pd. michael brown's parents spent sunday at a church service honoring their son. and they wilson's resignation does not come as a surprise. and protests over the weekend

were mostly peaceful. a trend everyone here is hoping will continue. george? >> thank you, alex. let's go to amy with the other top stories. we begin with a community in mourning after the apparent suicide of an ohio state football player. hundreds of students attended a vigil last night for 22-year-old defensive tackle kosta karageorge just hours after his body was found in a dumpster near campus along with a gun. police believe he shot himself. he went missing wednesday after sending his mother a text about concussions he had suffered. and breaking overnight, a violent escalation in hong kong. pro-democracy protesters moving to surround government offices. and police charging them with pepper spray and batons. after hours of running clashes, the two sides backed off again. also breaking overnight, a rare earthquake rocked central arizona. the 4.7 magnitude quake was centered north of sedona. thousands reported feeling it. no reports of injuries. investigators in the florida panhandle are trying to figure out what caused this freight

train to derail. 23 cars went off the track. the impact folded one tanker car in half. but there were no leaks despite several cars carrying acid. a major roadway will be closed for days. a wild scene from a car race. racing superstar mark weber's car hit another competitor and slammed straight into a wall while going 190 miles an hour. amazingly, neither driver was injured. this is an apparently unfriendly turn for weber. he crashed there on the same bend 11 years ago. for the first time in nearly a century of tempting us with cookies, the girl scouts are going online. scouts will be able to sell those famous goodies through a personalized website or a mobile app. and they'll be sent directly to buyers. and finally, you thought the potholes in your town were bad? check out the sinkhole that opened up in the middle of a

busy intersection in china. it swallowed up a car. the driver and the passenger managed to escape before the car fell all the way into the sinkhole and flipped over like that. the sinkhole is being blamed on soil erosion. the driver thought he hit something until he felt the car sinking. and managed to get out in time. i will never complain on the fdr again. >> not after seeing that. thank you, amy. now to the nfl and ray rice. his wife, janay, is speaking out this morning after rice's indefinite suspension was lifted. lots of questions about his future and the future of roger goodell, the nfl commissioner. ryan smith is here with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. nearly a year since ray rice set foot in an nfl game. as he attempts his comeback and the nfl tries to explain its arbitration laws, janay rice is sharing her pain about seeing that now infamous elevator video. this morning, as ray rice hopes to return to the field, his wife janay speaking out, saying, i was sick to my stomach.

i just broke down in tears. >> in my heart i knew that our relationship wouldn't be over because i know that this is not us. >> reporter: and in an interview with nbc, janay says it's commissioner roger goodell, not her husband, who is being less than honest about hat what the league knew and the actions in that video. >> i can't say he's telling the truth. i know for a fact that he -- that ray told the honest truth that he's been telling from february. >> reporter: a direct contradiction to what goodell told cbs in september. >> when we met with ray rice and his representatives, it was ambiguous about what happened. >> reporter: as the investigation into the nfl's handling of the case is looming, retired federal judge barbara jones ruled friday that the nfl's decision to suspend ray rice indefinitely was arbitrary. overnight, our sister network espn says four teams are interested in signing rice.

but two of those teams are not expected to pursue him. >> he's proven himself as a football player for seven years. there's never been a question of what he can do on the field. >> reporter: could goodell face fresh scrutiny? >> it's difficult to have checks and balances when you have a commissioner who is judge, jury, and executioner. >> reporter: the league sent this memo this week to all 32 teams explaining the decision to reinstate rice. but adding about goodell -- no part of judge jones' decision questions the commissioner's honesty or integrity. integrity, something she believed her husband has despite the league's actions. >> i think they did what they had to do for themselves. >> reporter: janay rice says it will take work to get her husband back on the field, but she never considered leaving him. as for the league and goodell -- the league's team owners meet december 10th and plan to discuss changes for the personal conduct policy. that could mean big changes for the nfl, robin. >> you and other legal experts were not surprised at the reinstatement. you kind of expected that to happen. a lot of talk about the future

of roger goodell. >> i don't think he's at risk just yet. i think this decision is a blow to roger goodell. but the owners have been in support of him throughout the process. they're the ones in charge of hiring and firing their commissioner. as long as they're behind him, he will stay in the job. >> and the owners have firmly supported him to this point. >> that's right. >> thank you. >> sure thing. a lot of anxiety in hollywood. >> anxiety and questions. a huge hack attack rocking a major hollywood studio. sony's computer system hacked and movies leaked online. investigators are looking at a possible link to north korea where the government is upset about an upcoming comedy. cecilia vega has the story. >> reporter: north korea isn't laughing about the latest james franco and seth rogen tag team. >> want to go kill kim jong-un? >> totally. >> reporter: is it enough to prompt an all-out cyberwar? this morning, sony pictures under attack.

especially when that cold air is really shallow. winter weather advisories and freezing rain advisories. a shallow layer of cold air. limited moisture. we don't expect a ton of accumulation. just enough to make the road slick. especially over the overpasses. look at the difference in temperature between, say, st. louis and jackson. a 40-plus-degree swing. in some cases over the weekend, we had 60 and 70-degree swings in just 24 hours. this is a strong cold front. when it comes through your area, you'll know it. if you watched the nfl yesterday, you saw how cold the central plains were. today, across the eastern corridor, especially i-95, temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. early in the day. then the cold blast comes in. meanwhile, southern florida, looking for rainfall. the rain arrives in california later on tonight.

she put her arms around the boy saturday. he went missing after visiting with his father, gregory jean, when he was 9. over the weekend, the 13-year-old managed to get his hands on a cell phone, download an app, and text his mother. telling her he was south of atlanta, hidden in his father's home. >> we came here to the home and were able to get inside the home. >> reporter: they visited the home twice. the first time, they couldn't find the boy. the people home denied he was there. the teenager sent a second text on that cell phone saying he was there all along, hidden in a secret compartment in the walls of the home. >> we opened the compartment where he was. and i saw him and asked him to come forward. he was horrified. he was frozen with fear. >> reporter: they found him in a small attic above the garage. and the only way to it was

through the back of a closet covered with towels and a piece of plywood. >> i couldn't believe it. we found him. he just kept saying, thank you, thank you, thank you. >> reporter: it appears he was held against his will. this morning, his father and stepmother, samantha davis, are charged with false imprisonment obstruction and cruelty to children. both denied bail. the boy's parents are haitian immigrants. his father and stepmother who lived here appear in court again on december 9th. now to the trial of a montana homeowner accused of killing a german exchange student in his garage. he claims it was self-defense. prosecutors say he set a trap. tom llamas is tracking the case. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, george. a jury will decide if a montana man really thought his home and life were in danger when he shot that 17-year-old foreign exchange student or if he was just trigger-happy. this morning, jury selection under way in the trial of

montana marcus kaarma, accused of killing a german exchange student. the jury will decide if kaarma, a u.s. forest service firefighter, really felt his home and life were in danger. >> my client didn't want to kill some kid like that. that was not his intent. he feels terrible about this. >> reporter: this surveillance camera image captures diren dede. prosecutors say that kaarma's girlfriend, janelle flagger, told police they mad had been burglarized two times in three weeks. they set up a baby monitor in the garage and installed motion sensors and then left the garage door open with a purse inside as bait for the thieves. one sunday this past april, the sensors would go off. alerting kaarma, who told police he grabbed his shotgun and ran outside. he thought the intruder would come out and harm him, so he fired four shots, striking dede in the head and the arm. the teenager later died.

>> we're outraged it happened. especially to someone who we loved so dearly. >> reporter: police say two other teenagers have since confessed to those previous robberies. kaarma was overheard just days before in a profanity-laced tirade against the unknown burglars saying, i'm not kidding. you'll see them on the news. i'm going to kill them. but kaarma's lawyer claims his client had a right to defend himself under montana's castle doctrine. >> the castle doctrine says a man's home is his castle and he can use lethal or deadly force to protect that home. >> reporter: and kaarma and his family say there was no baiting here. they were on high alert. the parents of that foreign exchange student are flying in from germany for the trial. robin and george? >> all right, tom, thank you. time again for the weather. rob is in for ginger. you passed along good news. what was that you said? >> it's the end of hurricane season. >> yes, yes!

infant death syndrome. dr. rich besser is here. a lot of confused parents out there? >> there are. nearly 4,000 babies die every year suddenly. accidental suffocation in bed is a leading cause. the academy of pediatrics has been promoting safe sleep habits. this study looked at a 13-year period to see what is happening. some practices are getting better. 55% of babies are put in bed with soft blankets or comforters. that is dangerous. there can be entrapment. teen moms and babies who sleep are their parents are at the greatest risk. >> everyone thinks they're doing the best they can and they're doing the right thing and they hear something like this. does this surprise you? this result? >> it does. as a pediatrician, i talk to all new parents about how to put their babies down. i focus on putting the baby on the back to sleep. a lot of parents think, i can't sleep well without a pillow and i don't have a big, soft quilt. they think for the baby it's the same thing. until they're about a year old, their neck is not strong enough.

one of america's favorite tv families is back. "the little couple" kicks off its seventh season tomorrow night. jen and bill return after a roller coaster year that included her battle with cancer and their adopting their second child. here's a look. >> you want to hold on to every moment while they're young. it's a bug. i know, gross. but at the same time. >> come on, we're gonna win, we're gonna win. >> i'm so excited to see what they become. i'm so proud of them now. >> there you go. >> i can't imagine what the future holds for them. >> everybody help. >> yay. >> we want to welcome dr. jen arnold and bill klein. thanks for being with us. >> thank you. for having us. >> our pleasure. >> i know last year was difficult for you. battling a rare form of cancer. how are you? >> thank you for asking. i'm doing really well. i'm now cancer free for almost eight months.

oh, my goodness. time flies when you're having fun. >> congratulations. >> thank you. close monitoring. hopeful that it continues to be as good as it is right now. >> and an amazing hair style. >> congratulations to you. survivors. we have to stick together. >> thank you. that's right. i agree. very happy for you. so much good news to talk about. because now you have two beautiful children with you. 4-year-old will, 3-year-old zoey. they're both little people. how are they doing in terms of acclimating to a new family and a new country? >> the first couple of months with zoey, i think everybody saw, was touch and go. since then, she's turned around to be quite an extraordinary little girl. they're both in preschool now. >> you have to say good-bye to them every morning. it must be tough. >> it's no fun. >> they don't seem to be as bummed about it. >> that's a good thing. >> they're like bye. >> and you all are both working parents. extraordinarily difficult jobs. jen, you're a neonatologist. at texas children's hospital.

and bill, you're the ceo of rocky and maggie's pet shop. how do you find family time? >> i think for us, it's part of our calendar. we keep a very strict calendar. we make time for family time in the evenings. that's our time. bill gets the morning with the kids because he goes in later than me. but i get more of the bed time stories. we always have dinner together. and really, whether it's a little thing like eating together or a big thing like spending a saturday at the park. we try to focus on being together. >> or a big thing like a pirates cruise along the potomac river. i think we'll see that tomorrow night. >> will was a big fan. >> as children, you were treated for medical challenges related to your dwarfism. your children are facing some of the same medical challenges that you did as children. tell me about your involvement with speak now for kids.

>> excited to be part of speak now for kids. it's a great campaign. with a new bill that's currently in congress. we're hoping it's passed this year. it will improve coordination of care, efficiency of care, and easier access to care with kids with medical complexities. it's very scary that there are many children today that can't get the right care at the right place. our goal is to have that for our kids. we travel, you know, the country, if need be. not all families can do that. right now, this bill will hopefully make that access to care much better. >> you're raising awareness and making a difference. and entertaining us all in one. kudos to you. thank you. congratulations again. >> thank you. the new season of "the little couple" premiers tomorrow night on tlc. coming up, seth macfarlane sings live. ♪
