>> because we haven't had so much rain, right? >> exactly. i'm welcoming the rain. i'm hoping we don't have too many problems. >> in boulder creek, david louie, abc 7 news. this should be the biggest rain storm since february. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is outside tracking the storm. >> ama, this storm is going to soak us and pick up the winds as we head towards your tuesday. we may even be seeing thunderstorms around here. let's chk out live doppler 7 hd and i'll show you where we still have some showers in the east bay, very light return from oakland toward lafayette, concord, san ramon, down to street level here. right around skyline boulevard we are seeing a few returns, macarthur boulevard, wet roadways for the evening compute. this is nothing in comparison to the storm that's coming. it's got a pretty good subtropical moisture tap. it is going to bring with it some heavy rain. urban flooding, wind damage, power outages, moderate risks as

we take a look at our storm risks for tuesday. slight chance of thunderstorms, up to five inches of rain for our bay area mountains. as you take a look at the timing, 11:00 tonight, clouds, as we head toward the morning commute, it is starting to get wet. at 5:00 a.m., rain intensifies during the morning commute. this storm is not in a hurry to leave us. i'll be back with a detailed look on how much rain you can expect this week. cheryl? >> sandhya, thank you so much. a huge tree fell in power lines in atherton this afternoon. that large oak also damaged at least one car along palmer lane. this happened about 12:30 this afternoon. fortunately nobody was hurt. atherton's public works department believes root fungus and wet soil weakened the tree and caused it to fall. pg&e hopes to recenter power to 71 homes by this evening. crews cleaning up tree

limbs. that tree near oak and robert, huge branch completely snapped off from the damaging weather. wayne freedman joins us from the east bay with more on the storm damage. >> reporter: hello, cheryl. isn't this bizarre. after a year wondering if we'd ever get rain again, we're having to wonder if it will ever stop. this has been a day of pressing. for instance, have you checked your storm gutters? you might want to. here is a guy who spent all day doing it. his name is stewart and he had a lot of calls today, more business than he can handle. >> why do they wait till the last minute? >> people are procrastinators. >> now maybe they're wore years. if the rain comes tomorrow, those gutters overflow. in a year following a drought, maybe you haven't thought about the leaves filling the gutters or the nearby creek or culvert. have you caulked your windows. did you fill sandbags?

house fire in campbell. sky 7hd was overhead at santa clara county and san jose firefighters worked to knock it down. it broke out just after 8:00 a.m. that's when a man passing by noticed smoke coming from the home on villarita drive and banged on the homeowner's door. >> he told me he saw smoke from outside. i went outside and then ran back in. said i'm not going to try to open it up. because it will add more oxygen in there. just grabbed her and got out. >> the homeowners got out with their dog unharmed. firefighters evacuated nearby residents. it took crews more an hour to get the fire under control. investigators are still searching for its cause. police had to deal with a live power lun in san francisco that fell on alemany boulevard after a drive are lost control of his car and slammed into a light pole. that brought down the live cable. police blocked the street while crews cleared the risk of electrocution. the driver was not hurt. right now sheriff's deputies

dozens of students and staff walked out of class in stanford in protest of the ferguson teenager shot and killed by an officer. they marched into palo alto and blocked traffic near el camino real. police say the protests did remain peaceful. they were part of a nationwide demonstration today. police are tallying the damage from last week's ferguson protests in san francisco's union square. some businesses have yet to finish repairs and are losing big money until they can reopen. police have just wrapped up a

news conference. lyanne melendez has the latest. >> reporter: cheryl, this is what sfpd told us. 79 people were detained on friday night. those were mainly citations. only four people were booked. clearly the headline tonight, cheryl, is the fact that 70% of those detained were not in san francisco. 15% not from california. this youtube video gone viral left several offices being struck by during the protest. two officers were hurt. in all five san francisco police officers were injured. >> what went on friday night is not first amendment activity. it's criminal conduct by a fringe element that seems to embed themselves in lawful first amendment activity and then acts out past that, and we will not have that here in san francisco.

what was supposed to be a peaceful march eventually turned into a chaotic scene. >> some protesters broke windows and yelled at police while others threw bottles at officers. police showed us some of the items confiscated that night including stolen devices from a radio shack store. 79 people were detained. most were only cited. four were booked for assaulting an officer, possession of stolen goods and for outstanding warrants. this morning some businesses in downtown san francisco were assessing the damage. great jewelry was forced to close early after protesters, mad over the ferguson decision, broke several windows. >> we closed the door, they couldn't come in. they hit the window. >> was it scary? >> very scared. >> reporter: the coffee shop next door didn't suffer any damage, but the manager that night remembers the scene. >> smashing windows. i just shut the door just to

sergio ginn tan nah, abc 7 news. a case before the supreme court could change what people can post on their facebook page. the case involves a man convicted of making threatening statements about his estranged wife and law enforcement. he says his so-called rants were part of a rap song and were therapeutic. the question, if a facebook post constitute a criminal threat, does the person getting the post feel threatened or does the person writing it intend it to be a threat. the nerves of apple investors are on age, the stock tumbled 6.5% shortly after the start of trading. 1.7 million shares traded in one minute. apple lost more than $40 billion in market value. the stocks rallied but still closed at $115, down more than 3%. some analysts blame computer programs and a recent rating change by morgan stanley. newly elected state

lawmakers took the oath of office, including the only republican representing the bay area. >> katherine baker of pleasanton joined 27 other freshmen assembly members in sacramento. ten other state senators were sworn in during the same ceremony. baker beat democrat tim ser van they in the expensive east bay race. her victory means assembly democrats won't have a supermajority to start the legislative session. a lot of people don't know about it, but a new tax could drive up gas prices. >> lawmakers are trying to intervene. 7 on your side's michael finney is here with a consumer update. >> republican lawmakers introduced a bill aiming to eliminate a gas tax set to go in effect this january 1st. the tax rate, a pollution tax paid at the pump. some legislators and critics say the new gas tax could raise the price of gasoline anywhere from 16 to 76 cents per gallon.

feet if this next storm lowers the snow levels. it's going to start out pretty high and drop to about 7,000 feet. right now here outside, a lot of cloud cover, no rain. make sure you have your rain gear handy because we are tracking some rainfall for tomorrow. right now just a few showers on our radar. in the east bay still continuing to create slick streets around lafayette, walnut creek, towards concord as we take you to street level. here is what i want to show you, this is interesting. here is our rainfall deficit. over an inch in san francisco, oakland, livermore about an inch and a half. san jose about a third of an inch. the next storm coming in may entirely erase our deficits which means we catch up season to date. it's not going to erase our drought. we'd need several years of soaking rains. our east bay hills camera, beautiful view. here is our view where we're

still looking at wet roadways at 5:00 p.m. scattered showers continue. another batch of heavy rain comes in wednesday morning, could see more thunder with that one as well. 8:00 a.m., still looking at moderate to heavy rainfall on wednesday. that tapers to scattered showers wednesday afternoon. when you look at the rainfall estimates right on through about 4:00 p.m. wednesday, north bay mountains three to five inches of rain, expecting two to four inches in the santa cruz mountains. in those elevations from .75 inch to 1.5 inches. that doesn't even include the showers on thursday. tomorrow, the other thing to worry about as we start our commuter animation tonight, 11:00 p.m. going into tomorrow, we'll start to see the winds pick up. gusty winds up to 41 miles per hour in san francisco. 34 oakland. 4:00 p.m. tuesday. that takes us into the evening rush hour. hold on tight and make sure you're aware of your surroundings. trees and power lines may get knocked down with this storm system here. in the sierra we are looking at

a san francisco man will receive full military honors more than 70 years after he went missing during a world war ii mission in new guinea. the department of defense positively identified air force sergeant charles gardner's remains through dna. he will be buried in arlington national cemetery on thursday. his plane was shot down with 11 others in 1944. the u.s.-led team located the wreckage in 2001 and found the remains of gardner and seven others. an el cerrito police dog is back on duty after running into a problem on the job. take a look at a picture of coda with his handler. last wednesday he had to be taken toon emergency veterinary clinic after he located what authorities say was cocaine in a car that was pulled over. tests showed he had the presence of a stimulant inside him. the driver was arrested and coda was better the next day.
