using smoke bombs and tear-gas to disperse the protesters. at least twice we did watch demonstrators throw those canisters back at the police officers. abc 7 news reporter on the ground for us tonight in berkeley with a look at some of the damage that was done. >> this demonstration started going sideways when the large group made its way to berkeley police headquarters, and officers tried to keep them clear of the building. one officer was injured by an object tossed from the crowd, and some tried to keep it nonviolent. >> no violence! >> one group made their way to a nearby trader joe's, and then protesters hit a radio shack. >> that window started breaking

and these two windows broke. >> it was like he was going to light the store on fire. a guy with a crowbar comes in and stars to steal stuff. >> one looter, as they rushed him out the backdoor, another looter attacked with a skateboard. >> i don't know why they have white people coming in and shoving black people, you should not be in this protest if you have white skin. >> outside, neighbors help to sweep up the scattered glass. >> i'm cleaning here. >> reporter: as the night unravelled, some demonstrators tried to stop the looting and vandalism. >> you shouldn't be taking things from the stores. >> after a few hours, one small group finally made its way back to the campus, and that's when the police made several arrests.

i am being told by berkeley police that the arrests are continuing. we are live over at that trader joe's where there was a lot of that vandalism going on, and the crews are trying to board up a lot of the windows that were busted out. also in the process of a lot of these demonstrations, there was a group that also tried to make their way out to the freeway, to i-80. they did not make it out to the freeway, i am hold highway patrol officers managed to keep them from shutting down the freeway. reporting live from berkeley, abc 7 news. >> that's something, at least. we want to take another look for you right now live from sky 7 hd. you can see police and protesters still there in the streets. no sign of tear-gas or smoke canisters at this exact moment, and not any smoke in the air there, but protesters and police still facing off protesters with their hands in the air, and some

cars trapped there in the middle of all of it, and no signs that this is ending anytime soon. smaller crowds, though, at this hour than we saw earlier in the night. downtown and north berkeley transportation was shut down but are not now. phrr arrested a dozen protesters in san francisco. they shut down traffic at market street near the b.a.r.t. station for about an hour. officers took in and took several into custody. >> we are asking for police to be accountable. we give them power and need to be held accountable for that power. >> our goal is to see that we all have to unite to oppose racist police brutality, because anybody can be a victim. >> last night in oakland,

protests turned violent. they arrested at least five people, but not before several shots were damaged. today you can see the damage left behind. a bank and a footlocker and shoe repair shop were among the vandalized businesses. the owner of a wine shop was beaten when he tried to prevent protesters from turning in shop protesters. wednesday and thursday, demonstrations remained peaceful. oakland police say a suicidal man did not die from being tasered by police officers today, that he died from self inflicted wounds. police were called to congress to find a man with a knife, and they say he had several self inflicted stab wounds and cuts to his wrist. police say he became arrested and tased him and disarmed him, and a medical crew treated him and he died a short time later. an autopsy will confirm the cause of death.

in richmond tonight, a suspected robber was shot. it happened just before 6:30. police say the suspect allegedly stole something from the home's yard and the resident opened fire. the suspect is in critical condition. turning to weather, we have a live look for you outside. no rain after seven straight days of rain, but more is on the way, so let's head to abc 7 meteorologist, and a first check of the weather. >> it was a mild december day across the region. we will show you dry skies, and tonight we will have overcast skies and patchy fog with temperatures falling in the mid-50s, but we are watching the neck storm approaching and we will let you know when that one will arrive. several trees have come crashing down in the bay area because of the rain. a huge tree uprooted earlier this morning in marine county.

it was across the roadblocking traffic until crews could remove it. a massive oak tree crashed into several buildings. lisa. >> reporter: it came down in the courtyard of the apartment complex. the tree itself was huge, and way taller than the building behind me, about 40 feet tall, actually, and 200 to 300 years old. >> i woke up thinking there was an earthquake, and i saw the wall shaking and then i heard this rumble, and then a crack. >> it was the sound of this giant oak tree falling on to a home in a four-unit building and it destroyed a tkpwau saeb and furniture. >> the branch went through the window, and he would have been hit if he was any closer. >> luckily, nobody was hurt but

renters in two of the ten units won't be coming home this weekend. utility workers tried restoring service to everybody tonight but couldn't. some residents who were allowed to return home worried it's still not safe. >> some of the tenants here saw it coming but just didn't know when. >> meantime a. family was shot when a tree crashed into the side of their home. >> there was a massive tree right behind our house where the roots were in a creek that fell and blew through the fence behind our house. >> also in san mateo county the heavy rain caused this mudslide. it caused major traffic delays. crews spent hours clearing the road. in san mateo county, 7 news.

good evening. in tonight's headlines, right now police and protesters are in a standoff in berkeley at telegraph avenue and channing way. there's a few hundred people still in the streets. you can see them splintered off in different groups. police are standing in a line and keeping them from get into different areas within berkeley. a couple hundred people now, and that is down from more than 1,000 tonight. several people have been arrested already, and officers used smoke bombs and tear-gas to break up the clouds earlier. and fights broke out between looters and other protesters

trying to top that. one officer was injured by something thrown by a protesters. in san francisco this afternoon, about a dozen protesters were arrested and they shut down traffic on market street for about an hour. protests taking place across the nation. it's the ninth night of demonstrations over the decision not to indict the white police officer whose choke hold killed an unarmed black man. >> reporter: a so-called die-in in new york city grand terminal. >> don't shoot! >> in a rally, garner's mother said she is comforted by the outpouring. >> she is so awesome to see how crowds are out there.

the body of one of 43 missing students in mexico has been identified. the students disappeared september 26th after a confrontation with a mayor and police. the family of alexander mora says forensic experts identified him among charred mariremains. the incident has led to protests and promises of reform from the president. president obama underwent tests and doctors found the cause of his sore throat. his symptoms are consistent with soft tissue swelling related to acid reflux. he will have to stop smoking for a while and cut down on alcohol and change his diet and if that doesn't work, he may have to go on medication.
