>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 7th. let's start with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> this morning, carolyn, pretty quiet this morning and we are looking at fog that is a bit of a problem around parts of the bay. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy this morning. one mile visibility up in santa rosa, problems along the coast and also in hayward this morning. so take it easy. if you are out there early. the fog is in pockets. it's not widespread so that is the good news. we will look for a little sunshine to come your way today. in fact, temperatures will be ranging from the low to mid-60s from the coast to san francisco. pretty mild once again to the

upper 60s around the bay. south wind out ahead of another weak weather temperature that will visit parts of the bay overnight tonight. we have a storm to talk about coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. chaos in the streets of berkeley has led to several arrests overnight during a demonstration to protest deadly incidents in ferguson, missouri and new york involving unarmed black men and police. it wasn't all violent. some protesters stepped in to try to prevent looting and damage to the city. you are looking at individual crow from sky 7hd where police used smoke bombs and teargas to disburse the protesters. it worked to break up the clouds but at times demonstrators threw the canisters back at the police officers. we have a look at some of the damage done on the ground. >> reporter: this demonstration started going sideways when the

loud group starred to make its way to berkeley police headquarters and officers tried to keep them clear of the building. one officer was injuredly a flying object tossed from within the crowd. some people tried to keep the protests nonviolent. >> so violence, no violence! >> police disbursed a smoke canister and that's when they splinterd. one made their way through the nearby trader joe's and started bashing in windows. protests then hit a neighborhood radio shack. >> it didn't work and next thing you know that window breaks that's correct window starts waking. >> someone with a hammer comes in. and a guy with a crowbar comes in and starts stealing stuff. >> they stay one looter went after a customer in a store and as they rushed him out the back door another looter attacked with a skateboard. >> i don't know why they have white people coming in and shoving black people. if you are protesting white and black crime you shouldn't be in the protest if you are white

skin. >> outside neighbors helped sweep up the shattered glass. >> we heard people showing and the shots, and we came to help and cleaning up. >> as the night unraveled, some demonstrators did try to stop the looting and vaunted limb. >> there's no need for this. you shouldn't be taking stuff. >> after a few hours one small group finally made its way back to u.c. berkeley campus and that's when police made several arrests. >> several businesses quickly tried to remare a lot of the damage. trader joe's crews are boarding you have the damaged windows. there were two other businesses hit, a radio shack and a wells fargo bank. there are also quite a few police recollection that were vandalized in the demonstration as well. in berkeley, i'm sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> the downtown of north berkeley bart stations were shut down on and off for several hours last night due to the

protests. police arrest bad a dozen protesters yesterday in san francisco. they shut down traffic at the powell street and market street station for about an hour. officers moved in and they took several people into custody. >> we're just asking for police to be held accountable. we give them a lot of scour we want them to be held accountable when they use it. >> we all have to unite to protest racist police brutality bus anybody could be a victim. >> and friday night in oakland protests turned violent. sky 7hd shows officers charging toward protesters. they arrested at least five people, but not before several shots were damaged. this is the damage left behind from friday night. a bank, a footlocker, a shoe repair shop among those vandalized businesses. the owner of a wine shop was beaten when he tried to prevent

protesters from smashing in his windows. it was the third night in a row protesters marched in oakland. >>. police say a suicidal man did not die from being tased from officers yesterday. he died from self-inflicted wounds. the police found a man with a knife this had several self-inflicted stab wounds and cuts to his wrist. he became aggressive so thetassed and disarmed him. a medical crew treated him but he died a short time later. an autopsy will confirm the cause of death. in richmond a suspected robber is in critical condition after being shopped. it happened after 6:30 last night at 42nd street and roosevelt avenue. police say the suspect stole something from the yard of a home and the resident opened fire. police also believe a second suspect was in the backyard but got away. there is no description available for that person. an alert for residents in

san mateo county this morning after a cougar was spotted in half moon bay. the san mateo county sheriff's office said the big cat was spotted in the area of burning tree court in the ocean colony housing development around 7:00 yesterday morning. the cougar apparently jumped the fence into the development's golf course. share you have's officials are reminding the public to not approach large cats. several trees have fallen in the bay area because of the rain. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more from menlo park where a massive oak tree crashed into several buildings. >> i woke up thinking there was an earthquake, and i saw the wall shaking then i heard this rumble and a crack. >> it was the sound of this giant oak tree falling on to a home in a four-unit building. it also destroyed a gazebo, furniture and bikes. part of the tree landed inches from the tenant who lives in apartment number 4.

>> he was on the couch and the branch went through the window. i mean, he would have been hit if he was any closer. >> luckily no one was hurt but renters in two of the ten units won't be coming home this weekend. utility workers tried restoring services but couldn't. tree's collapse is blamed on the rain, but some residents who were allowed to return home worry it's still not safe. >> how about this? >> some of the tenants saw it coming. they just didn't know when. >> meantime in wood side a family was shocked when a tree crashed into the received their home. >> there was a massive tree right behind our house where the roots were in a creek that fell and blew through the fence behind our house. >> also in san mateo county, the heavy rain cause this had mudslide on state route 84 east between lahonda road and skyline boulevard. it caused major traffic delays.

crews spent hours clearing the road n san mateo county, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> well, despite the recent rain, more water conservation efforts may be needed. you may be charged $4.33 more a month because of the drought and you could be asked to volunteer cut water by 15%. they will discuss that on tuesday. i know people get tired of hearing us say just because the we had rain, the drought is not over. >> that's right. and more rain is coming, believe me. we are starting out with fog. here's a look from the roof camera. temperatures are mild. we haven't had to turn on the heat, it's been muggy. the fog is with us. we'll talk about the next little rain maker and then a big storm headed our way, and i mean storm. that's coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, a northern california man killed in a failed res zoo attempt in yemen.

with the full accuweather forecast. the body of one of 43 missing students in mexico has been identified. the students disappeared back on september 26th after a confrontation with the mayor and police in southern guerrero. the family of alexander mora say they have identified him among charred remains. the students were handed over to a drug cartel to be killed. that incident has led to nationwide protests and promises of reform from mexico's precedent. a northern california man is dead after a high-risk u.s.-led raid to try to free him and another man from militants in yemen. yesterday's predawn raid was the second rescue attempt in as many weeks to free luke somers, a 23-year-old freelance photographer and editor who was kidnapped just over a year ago. michelle franson has the

details. >> american officials acting on intelligence gathered from drones, communications and intercepts and possibly informants made the decision to launch the rescue mission to save american journalist luke somers as the clock ticked down and al-qaeda-affiliated group in yemen threatened to execute him. he was kidnapped 14 months ago. the rescue was going to be sometime after sun-up on saturday. the mission wags launched from a u.s. airbase about 1:00 a.m. local time. around 40 members of the elite seal team 6 land bad six miles away from the hideout to avoid being detected from aircraft noise. they made their way on foot within 100 yards of an objective when a u.s. counter terror source tells abc news one of the guards who had gone outside to relieve himself spotted the team. a fierce ten-minute gun battle

ensued in which most, if not all of the guards were killed. u.s. officials say one of the attackers was seen racing inside the compound and likely shot both somers and a south african teacher also held hostage. one died from his wounds while being flown out to a u.s. navy ship and the other in the ship's medical facility. somers is from sacramento, california. in a statement al-qaeda forced him to record earlier. somers spoke about his fate. >> i'm certain my life is in danger. >> michelle franson, abc news, new york. >> more u.s. troops than originally planned will be staying in afghanistan. defense secretary chuck hagel made the announcement during a visit there yesterday. he said about 1,000 more troops will stay into early next year to fill a temporary nato gap. the troops will be assigned to a new mission to train and advise afghan security forces. more than a thousand holiday

care packages from the bay area are headed to troops n napa volunteers of "operation of love from home" packed boxes to the men and women overseas who cannot be with their families. a storage boxes filled with boxes like these collapsed in the napa earthquake, which is why yesterday's donations are so important. >> but the silver lining in that is you see what is here today. you see people rallying to still support the cause, realizing that we had a natural disaster that would have shut this down potentially. >> it's not just the socks and other things, they get a card, something actually touched by human. >> they exceeded their goal to fill and ship 1,000 packages. big cyber monday sales are lead to go some delivery sales. sign better monday sales were up 8.5% over last year. that's lead to go some delays from shippers. ups telling abc7 news there are

small delays, but they have hired 100,000 seasonal workers this year and they are not predicting the big problems we saw last year just before christmas. >> the end of the year is fast approaching. that means many people will be donate to go their favorite charity. but where is your money really going? consumer reports has partnered exclusively with "7 on your side" to reveal some tips to know before you give. michael finney has the details. >> good morning. 40% of charitable contributions are made in the last few weeks of the year. how can you determine if a charity is worthy of your hard-earned dollars? consumer reports has some important advice. >> these days your mailbox is probably stuffed with solicitations from charities. but be aware. consumer reports has found some charities spend very little on the causes they promote. >> for instance, in it's latest

irs filing, the cancer's survivor fund in texas reported they spent just eight cents of every dollar on their programs. nine cents went to fundraising. >> another increasingly common way to give, buying from companies that donate part of the sales to theirty but the company gets a tax deduction, not you. and another caution. >> you really have to be careful with impulse giving. it can be hard to determine how much money from the sales will at all i go to the charity. >> in this line of charity ornaments at macy's, nearly all don't specify which charity will benefit or how much of the money will be donated. only one, the pink santa says where the money goes and how much. consumer reports says to do some homework before donating. two reliable watchdog websites that are free, charity navigator .org and the better business bureau's give.org. it lets you know how much money

the charities give to the organizationings they support and how much goes for administrative costs and fundraisers. >> some of your favorite charities may not berated because they are too small or too local. that doesn't mean you shouldn't give to them, you just should do more research. >> fir check, check out their website to see missions and accomplishments and consider volunteering first. it's a great way to ask questions and get to know the charity from the inside. another way to go, give to a nonprofit fundraising federation such as united way. it checks out the charities it represents before allowing them to participate. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." expect to see some extra security if you are going to this afternoon's 49ers-raiders game. the raiders say there will be more uniformed and undercover police and security officers patrolling parking lots and o. o. -- the coliseum.

good morning half moon bay, 54. we have one temperature in the 40s up in santa rosa. it's dropped down to 46 degrees. that's more per usual this time of year. it has some pretty mild and on the muggy side with temperatures in the 50s. 58 right now in concord. so south wind once again will be visiting us out ahead of a weak cold front. but this morning it has reduced the visibility and mountain view to 2.5 miles and 2.75 miles in santa rosa and 5-mile in livermore. the patches of fog will stick around for the morning hours and then it will begin to evaporate and we will see some sunshine around the bay. enough high clouds out ahead of the next system will keep it cloudy in parts of the north bay. we will keep it dry throughout the day and right on through the evening hours. but the showers will be visiting parts of the north bay. perhaps the peninsula. but overall it's going to be focused up north with a very weak funnel system that pushes through. it's going to linger into

tomorrow. but we are going to be dry for tuesday and then heavy rain and lots of wind this time with this round of rain come wednesday into thursday. here's the radar and satellite picture. there's the front. it is a weak one. the tail end of it swings on through. it will allow for just a couple of showers. it's going to lose a lot of its moisture tap so there isn't really much to write home about. but as we take you through the next couple of hours, you notice 5:00 in the afternoon plenty of clouds around. we stay dry through the early evening hours. look at the rain. it's well to the north. this is midnight. monday morning you could see slick roadways from sonoma and some showers around marin. as you head through the afternoon still a lingering chance of showers. 2:00 we have moisture offshore and through 10:00 maybe a lingering shower. we want to jump ahead to this. this is what is to come. not only does it pack a lot of rain but the wind. we are talking wind gusts 50 and

in excess of 60 miles an hour. this rain total pretty conservative, 3 to 4 inches. we could see 5 to 8 inches in the north bay. we are looking at a big punch here with an already saturated ground. 69 in san jose. 67 redwood city. look for temperatures in the mid-60s today under mostly cloudy skies fran. more clouds notice north bay, 67 in fremont today as well as pittsburgh and brentwood. accuweather seven-day forecast, rain late mainly in the north bay. it ends late in the day tomorrow but it's going to be focused sonoma county and marin county. a dry day unnests. here come the rain and wind at night on tuesday and soaking rain on thursday. it should last into friday and then partly sunny on saturday. you can see what is showing up on live doppler 7hd anytime with the new weather app. it's free on apple's app store or google play. we have more information also

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. after yesterday's rain we enjoyed some sunshine and pretty foggy this morning in spots. live doppler 7hd is dry, but we will be tracking some rain later on today. it's the fog right now in hayward at 3-mile visibility. look at mountain view. just a mile and a quarter and up in the north bay three quarters of a mile in santa rosa. this extends all the way down to the central coast. only five miles for our friends in the east bay. so it does clear, but we will look for a partly to mostly cloudy afternoon today with temperatures ranging from the mid-to upper 60s. it's been awfully muggy. even with the passage of some funnel systems. we have another one to talk about today. is that going to do it? we have another stronger one to talk about. that one is going to bring in much colder air.

this all coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. protests took place across the nation last night. they turned violent in berkeley. there have been nightly demonstrations since the grand jury decided not indict the white police officers whose apparent choke hold is said to have led to the death of an unarmed black man in new york. abc news reporter ron claiborne has the latest. >> marching through a shopping mall in houston, texas. a so-called die-in in new york city grand central terminal. the protests over the grand jury decision are spreading. at a rally in harlem, this motor said she was comforted by the outcoming. >> it is just so awesome to see how the clouds are out there. >> although the officer involved in the deadly arrest of eric garner will not face criminal charges. garner's family said they intend to file a similar lawsuit. >> the evidence is there, we think, to show excessive force

and wrongful death by these officers on eric garner. >> officer daniel has been sued before in 2013 and earlier this year. in two incidents of alleged wrongful arrest. one case was settled. new york daily news reporting that he denied those charges. the other case still pending. >> 27 new york city police officers are field testing body cameras that proponents say can reduce use of force incidents. >> put your hands on the car. both of you. >> all 07 uniformed officers now wear body camps. in their first year of use, civilian complaints against police fell 88%. and use of force incidents were down nearly 60%. sceptics, like eric garner's mother says bystanders had cameras rolling when they are son was arrested. >> that was ron claiborne reporting. as protests grow all over the country over the grand jury's decision and the death of eric

garner, george stephanopoulos goes one-on-one with the new york city mayor and former new york city police commissioner, only on "this week sunday." you can catch "this week" right here at 8:00 this morning. richmond police officers will start using those body cameras early next year. the department received 120 of the cameras this past week. paid for with a federal grant. officers will have to manually turn on the cameras before any interaction with the public. following criticism over its decision to buy a drone, the san jose police department has released proposed guidelines for how the device may be used. more than 100 people packed city hall yesterday for the second hearing aimed at getting feedback on where the drone should leave the ground. critics have voiced privacy concerns but police say the drone would be used in emergency situations such as active shooters and hostage scenarios.

president obama underwent tests at walter reed medical center yesterday and doctors have found the cause of his sore throat. they say the president's symptoms are consistent with soft tissue swelling related to acid reflux. the culprit could be his past smoking. experts say the president will have to raise the head of his bed, cut down on alcohol and change his diet. if that doesn't work, he may have to go on medication. happening today, the annual lighting of the beacon ceremony at the summit of mt. diablo to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. due to weather today's lighting ceremony has been relocated to the cal state east bay campus in concord and the beacon will be lit remotely. a commemorative symbol of those who lost their lives at pearl harbor, the beacon is relitany survivors every year in a ceremony attend by their families and the public.

today's event gets underway at 3:45. also happening today in just a few hours, pearl harbor survivors, as well as military and coast guard veterans, will hold a remembrance ceremony penalty killers coast guard base in almeda to commemorate the attack at the navel base in hawaii. you are looking at video of a previous ceremony held in 2012. today's remembrance gets underway at 8:30. the attack on pearl harbor killed 2500 people, devastated america's pacific fleet, and ushered the u.s. into the second world war. abc7 morning news anchor eric thomas talks to two bay area men, members of a very exclusive club, whose numbers are dwindling. >> yesterday december 7, 1941, a day which will live in infamy.

>> on december 8th. while president franklin roots investment was asked to declare war on japan, ships at the powerful pacific fleet were still smoldering at pearl harbor. there was a corridor of destruction. lafayette's richard johnny johnson was a young sailor aboard the uss san francisco, getting ready for recreation time at the beach. >> and i look at the airplanes coming over the mountain side and he they are lineup and going slow but there are so many airplanes flying around in pearl harbor anyway, it didn't mean much as first. but they headed for battleship row and he watched the bombs start to fall. >> two bombs on the arizona and they began smoking. >> one of those bombs went through the deck and landed in the vault where arizona's shells and gunpowder were stored. a massive graft destroyed the ship and killed nearly 1200 members of her crew. one was below deck on the

cruiser uss st. louis when the skipper decided to get out into pearl into deeper water where they could maneuver. they nearly ended up sailing to their doom. >> it was a two-man submarine waiting for a ship and they fired two torpedoes but there was a coral reef between us so the coral reef took the hit. >> december 10th they sailed back in to a scene of carnage. >> we didn't think the japanese would be that bold to come all the way. >> after four long years of continuous battles, the victorious sailors, soldiers and marines sailed home with a firm conviction not to be caught unaware like that again. for their efforts they would be labeled the greatest generation. but that generation is disappearing. these men are in their 80s and 90s and there may be fewer than 2,000 pearl harbor veterans still with us. with age comes frailty. but also wisdom and forgiveness. john and his family were stationed in japan for three

plenty of them, in san francisco with temperatures in the upper 50s across the bay. 54 on the peninsula, about the same. 52 in san jose and we are looking at low 50s morgan hill. it's a typically cooler spot. emeryville good morning to you. there's your 46. santa rosa 53 down the road in napa. so also napa an unusually chilly spot in the valley there but nothing doing with all the south wind ahead of the weather systems. 57 concord. 54 in livermore. here's a look at our visibility. santa rosa just three quarters after mile. five miles oakland, livermore and hayward, and mountain view just three miles. it's not totally pea soup, but we have the fog in spots so give yourself some time. as far as the sfo not reporting delays, that probably will change. it will be a dry day throughout the weekend but we have a weak front front that will visit.

much of the moisture will be tapped out of the system and we will look for lingering showers from that temperature into monday. then we are partly cloudy so pretty decent day once again and very mild. but heavy rain and a much colder system, this will set up across the entire state, but the bulls eye on the bay area for wednesday and thursday and packing a punch with some very gusty winds. likely advisories will be going up later on today for the incoming system. here's our weak system off the coast. out ahead of it we are already look at high mid-level clouds. we will manage some sunshine out today, and as a result it should be pretty decent afternoon. but as we go through the afternoon, you will notice more cloud cover. 5:00. we've got more sunshine from the peninsula into the south bay. here comes a little precip, some shower activity approaching sonoma. the mendocino coast and finally a few showers will be drifting southward. but it's 8:00 monday morning and the front is still around. so we could see some showers

right on through 3:00. notice off the marin coast, point raise. if you see anything it will be lithe and it washes out throughout the evening hours. this is the next system. we are fast forwarding. it cues up, but we are dry on tuesday but as it moves in the wind kicks in first late wednesday. here comes the ranger night wednesday. there's the bullseye into thursday. it's over us on thursday night. then by friday it begins to push on through. upwards of 8 inches in the north bay. we are looking at about another 2 inches with some very gusty winds around the urban area. 65 today san francisco, 67 morgan hill, 69, another muggy day in san jose. niners and the raiders, mid-60s with sunshine. the accuweather seven-day forecast showers in the north bay late tonight and into tomorrow we are dry and mild -- or muggy through tuesday. then the wind and the very heavy soaking rain, and then by friday
