i'm reena ninan. >> i'm t.j. holmes. we begin with breaking news stemming from the choke hold death of eric garner. violence breaking out overnight in the middle of the latest round of protests. >> it was mayhem on the streets of berkeley, california for the second straight night. rogue protesters smashed windows, looted stores, and set fire in the middle of the street. as they clashed with police using tear gas. and got into fights with other demonstrators trying to stop the violence. a much calmer scene in new york where garner died. protesters gathered by the hundreds for the fifth night marching around manhattan, demanding changes to a system they say is broken after the grand jury decided not to charge the white officer in garner's chokehold death. the nypd immediately began retraining the police force. and protesters also rallied in philadelphia, blocking traffic as thousands of fans left last night's eagles game. demonstrators staged a die-in. hundreds of them laying down in the middle of the street.

the other major story we're reporting on is the release of a report, as soon as tomorrow, on the cia's use of torture. details so disturbing that u.s. interests around the globe are now on alert for possible violence. marry bruce joins us with more from washington. good morning to you, mary. >> reporter: good morning. while these practices are largely known, it's the details, the graphic nature of this report that is said to be so shocking. u.s. embassies around the world on high alert, bracing for the release of an explosive, top-secret report on the use of torture by the cia. >> this will, in fact, incite violence. it's likely to cost someone their life. >> reporter: u.s. officials already fearing the backlash. some questioning whether the report should be made public at all. >> the concern is over our military forces, our diplomats, and other officials around the world. particularly in areas where there are hot spots in the middle east and north africa. >> reporter: the 6,000-page senate report is said to be very graphic about the methods used in the dark days after 9/11. >> we tortured some folks. we did some things that were contrary to our values.

>> reporter: president obama banned these practices. but the report is expected to reveal gruesome new details. some prisoners were sexually demeaned. and cia interrogators urged to continue the torture even after concluding no more information could be gleaned. the bush administration has already come under heavy criticism for its post-9/11 interrogation techniques. over the weekend, the former cia director rejected the accusation that the cia lied about the effectiveness of these methods. >> to say we relentlessly, over an expanded period of time, lied to everyone about a program that wasn't doing any good, that beggars the imagination. >> reporter: the fear is releasing the report could provoke u.s. enemies including isis and cause more americans to be the target of violence. t.j. and reena? >> thank you, mary bruce. live for us in washington, d.c. thank you, so much. the south african teacher killed in a failed rescue attempt by u.s. special forces in yemen was supposed to be

released the next day as part of a ransom deal. u.s. officials said they had no idea the deal was in the works when they attempted to rescue american luke somers and the teacher pierre korkie. in fact, they weren't even sure the two men were being held together until after the failed raid. an american teacher stabbed to death at an abu dhabi mall was remembered sunday at a memorial service. the candlelight vigil on sunday was in memory of ibolya ryan, the mother of a daughter and twin sons. her ex-husband, pictured here with the children, described ryan as a beautiful person with a pure heart. she was killed in what officials call a lone wolf attack by a woman who also placed a bomb at the home of an american doctor. "rolling stone" magazine has revised its apology. after the searing article on rape at the university of virginia. at first editors revealed that they had found discrepancies in the account told by the alleged victim in the report and felt that their trust in her was misplaced. now, they've removed the line about misplaced trust because it appeared to blame the woman.

their note the readers now says the mistakes in the reporting were theirs. a doctor who contracted ebola while treating patients in west africa has gone public with his ordeal. ian crozier told "the new york times" he kept his identity a secret to protect his family. he was by far the sickest ebola patient to be treated at emory hospital. he was on a ventilator for 12 days. and he was on dialysis for 24 days. he said he's going public now to raise awareness and to thank emory for the life saving care. and breaking news overnight in downtown los angeles. a massive fire has torched an apartment building under construction. an aerial picture of this fire shows how large the blaze is. the huge flames shooting higher than the tall palm trees. this video taken by a person driving by the scene. no word on the cause. no injuries reported. the typhoon battering the philippines is weakening but is not gone just yet. the monster storm raged across the country all weekend. destroying homes and knocking out power. about 1 million people who

evacuated are returning home now. dangerous mudslides a threat. the philippine red cross says 21 people have died. the government has not confirmed that number. back here, a slow-moving nor'easter gets going tonight, moving up the i-95 corridor tomorrow. heavy rain turns to snow. up to a foot of snow in syracuse, albany, and northern new england. meanwhile, the series of storms rattles the west this week with northern california getting hit particularly hard. time for the weather across the nation. the calm before those storms today. dry and quiet in the center of the country. rain in portions of ohio and illinois. a wintry mix in wisconsin and minnesota. wet in the pacific northwest and san francisco. in the east, the first of the rain from the coastal storm hits the mid-atlantic tonight. chilly 30s and 40s in the east. pleasant and warm in the south. seasonable, 50s, 60s, and 70s across the west. still ahead, the offensive wrapping paper that has walgreens pulling it from the shelf. plus, royal visit. prince william and duchess kate are in america. they arrived in style and have a full plate of events today. we're live with the details.
