an action that resulted in the arrests of 150 demonstrators. others blocked railroad tracks and amtrak trains. >> we haven't seen protests of this size with this level of violence in many decades. even when we call in mutual aid in this case particularly, we were vastly outnumbered by the number of protesters. >> reporter: in oakland to visit students, reverend jesse jackson reflected on the form the demonstrations have taken in the bay area since the grand jury decisions of ferguson and new york city. >> don't lose the message and the technique. ultimately, you can't beat tanks with bricks. secondly, we lose the message in acts of violence. thirdly, there is no redemptive trans forming power in violence. >> i learned to control my anger. >> reporter: 14-year-old lamar miller told us he has been watching events in berkeley and oakland, too.

he's extremely concerned about the issues behind the demonstrations but like jackson, he is keeping a close eye on the methods. >> i'm proud of people rising up but i'm not proud that they destroying the city because of it. >> reporter: what do you think they should do? >> peaceful protests. don't destroy things. don't loot people's very hard earned businesses. >> reporter: with the city council meeting here canceled for tonight, it's not clear what if any demonstrations there will be. city leaders hope whatever it is, it stays peaceful and they hope to get a bit of relief tomorrow night from all the demonstrations when that storm moves into the bay area. in berkeley, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you. sky 7 hd shows you james logan high school students leaving class and marching to union city police headquarters. that's where they staged a die-in. administrators believe between 200, maybe up to 300 students joined this afternoon's protest. their teachers will decide if they can make up any missed work.

more than 4100 students attend logan. it is northern california's largest high school, by the way. the protest was entirely peaceful. african-american leaders in san francisco are making a plea to protesters to stop the violence. dr. amos brown, the president of the san francisco naacp, joined other ministers in denouncing the looting in berkeley. they challenged demonstrators that if they really want to create change, they should join with the black community and fight for justice. >> if you are for us, then we need to see you. when the tragedy is not hot. because there's a tragedy for african-americans going on every day. >> the group is fighting for sensitivity training for san francisco police officers, reforms to the grand jury system and more anti-racial programs. the ministers and their congregations will wear black this sunday in a show of solidarity. some protesters as you know have taken their message off the streets and right on to the freeways.

the past couple nights, demonstrators caused a huge traffic mess for commuters. abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington is live at chp headquarters in vallejo to explain how authorities hope to keep it from happening again. >> reporter: the chp does have out extra patrols and called in additional officers from other cities. they want protesters to know they respect their right to express their opinions but the freeway is not a safe or legal place to do that. this was the scene during last night's protest in berkeley. demonstrators marching on to interstate 80. at first, a small group trickled out on to the freeway near university avenue. cars continued zipping by. eventually hundreds spilled into lanes of traffic effectively shutting down both eastbound and westbound lanes. >> it's not only not right but it's against the law. >> reporter: ernie sanchez, assistant chief of the chp golden gate division, says officers are sworn to protect the constitution but this is not a peaceful assembly.

it's illegal and dangerous. >> not only could they be killed as pedestrians but the damage could be two-fold. those families that are unsuspecting and strike a pedestrian, can you imagine the holiday season? >> reporter: he says tonight, the goal is to keep protesters off the freeway. they are prepared with extra patrols and resources including air support. in past days, officers have used rubber bullets and beanbags to physically clear the crowd. >> the number one thing that worked is starting to make arrests. having an arrest on your record is something you will have to check off on any application when you are asked whether you are applying for school, for a job. >> reporter: in the past 48 hours, the chp arrested 223 demonstrators who marched on the freeway. some bails are set at $50,000. sanchez says they cannot realistically position officers on every mile of the interstate so if drivers do get stuck again, he says the best thing to do is stay calm and be patient.

roll up windows, lock doors and call 911 if you feel you are in danger. in vallejo, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. a mother and her newborn daughter are doing well this evening after protesters on interstate 80 blocked their ride to the hospital. sky 7 hd found berkeley fire department paramedics helping adriana torres last night. she had been scheduled to give birth in san francisco but her sister called 911 when the expectant mother's contractions were two minutes apart. the family provided this picture of torres and her daughter, camilla, who arrived just after 2:00 this morning. everybody is doing fine. abc news is devoting a full week of programming to report on race and justice in america. please watch for coverage on good morning america, world news tonight and nightline. tomorrow, george stephanopoulos will moderate a live town hall session on the issue on facebook. now to the big storm that is forecasted to hit the bay area

beginning late tomorrow. crews spread out across san francisco today to clear debris from storm drains before the wet weather really hits and they have a lot of work to do. as you can see from the live camera in emeryville, clouds are already moving in. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the latest on the storm's path. how much rain can we expect? >> when you see these rainfall estimates, you are going to be really quite surprised. let me show you live doppler 7 hd. we will take a look at the storm right now, just some fog and clouds to our north around crescent city. we are seeing some rain, so far it has been light. as you take a look at the wider picture, tracking a storm, it's a powerful storm that really has with it a pretty good moisture source and we are looking at cold air diving in right behind here. so we will be looking at heavy snow in the sierra nevada. this storm brings with it a high risk of urban flooding, mud and rock slides, creek flooding and power outages. gusts of 50 to 80 miles per hour, up to eight inches of rain

during this time period. as we head no your wednesday night, the rain starts to approach the ukiah cloverdale area at 6:00 p.m., then as the night goes on, we start to see the rain shifting. heavy rain, strong winds will kick up ahead of this storm. there are warnings and watches that you need to know about to keep you and your family safe. i will be back with those details in just a few minutes. cheryl? >> thank you so much. people living in the east bay are racing to prepare for the coming storm. the city of berkeley recently ordered 1800 sandbags for its residents. a third of those were already gone by this afternoon. many say they learned from last week's storm to be prepared, especially since this next one as you just heard is expected to be a lot bigger. >> we had the big storm recently, the water came under the door and just flooded the whole bottom of the door. we thought this time we would get sandbags. >> our drainage pipe is broken. our driveway kind of just fills up with water like a big swimming pool.

>> the city is responsible for 35,000 trees across berkeley and crews have been out all day trimming or cutting down the ones that are too weak to withstand the storm. private companies are getting slammed with requests for help. >> despite the recent rainfall, northern california has a long way to go if we want to meet our water needs. drone video shot this month helps show exactly how low our reservoirs are right now. the video shows shasta, trinity, oraville lakes, all reservoirs people rely on, are about 25% to 30% of capacity. it's still really bad. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, noaa, says 18 to 21 inches of rain over the next six months should bring us back to normal. track the weather where you live any time with our abc 7 news weather app. it is free on apple's app store or google play and we have more information at abc7news.com/apps. prosecutors in san francisco and los angeles sued the ride sharing car service uber today

for making false or misleading statements to consumers and for engaging in business practices which violate state law. among the complaints, san francisco district attorney says uber makes untrue or misleading representations on the quality of background checks it performs on drivers. in a response, uber said it is working with the d.a.s to address their concerns. also today, lift agreed to pay a $500,000 fine and change its practices because of similar allegations. sidecar remains under investigation. all three companies are based out of san francisco. in the meantime, a former uber driver goes to court tomorrow to be formally charged in the death of a little girl that he ran down in a san francisco crosswalk nearly a year ago. prosecutors will file vehicular manslaughter charges against him for killing 6-year-old sofia liu. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler spoke with the girl's mother today and is here with her reaction on this. >> reporter: the driver is free on $50,000 bail but could get up

to one year in jail for the fatal accident. the attorney for the victim's family says the criminal charge, misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, should send a message to other uber drivers. the mother wants to know what took so long. >> why so late at that time? why take a year to charge him? why didn't do it early? >> reporter: she lost her daughter, 6-year-old sofia, last new year's eve as she, sofia and the girl's little brother were crossing the street in san francisco's tenderloin. an uber driver was charged yesterday with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. >> it took almost a year because it was a very complex investigation. >> reporter: the district attorney says the evidence made a misdemeanor the appropriate charge. the driver's attorney says it shows no distracted driving. >> there was no use of a cell phone, no texting, no calls and

no engagement with the uber device. >> reporter: but the victim's mother disagrees. we first talked with her right after the accident, in which she was seriously injured. she said then and again today that the driver was checking his phone. >> he keep looking at the phone. he kept doing that, kept doing that and driving. i'm glad the driver is charged but what about uber? they're responsible, you know? >> reporter: the family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against uber and the company's transportation app as well as the driver. >> the civil suit is seeking to find the product defective, to find that the driver was an employee of uber, to hold uber financially accountable. >> i'm so upset, i just cry about my daughter. she still alive, it would be so great. >> reporter: we reached out to uber repeatedly today but have gotten no response.

impact of a bus sized meteor which hit in russia. some evidence of an improving economy. the labor department says job openings increased more than 3% to nearly five million in october, the second highest level in 14 years. the overall figures paint a picture of a more dynamic job market with businesses filling more open jobs and more americans quitting typically for better paying opportunities. more quitting, more job postings provide more opportunities for the unemployed to find work. hundreds of people turned out for the abc 7 job journal hiring event this afternoon in san francisco. some big name companies there including apple and the west contra costa unified school district. abc 7 news was there looking to hire producers and on-air talent. other positions range from auditors to teachers. more than 900 job openings were advertised. fed ex and ups are forecasting a record number of deliveries will be made this holiday season. >> prime concern, though, whether the package will get there in time and what will it

look like. will it be in good shape. >> here are some tips from 7 on your side's michael finney. >> there are plenty of worries about holiday shipping from customers. >> generally the biggest complaints are the condition of the box when it arrives. >> packaging that showed up damaged was a problem for half of those in a consumer reports survey. the most common complaint, high shipping fees. to find the best deal, shopping expert todd martz checked out rates for the u.s. postal service, federal express and ups. >> we compared the basic price to ship a three pound package like this from our new york headquarters to plano, texas. we shipped it three ways, standard overnight, second day, and ground shipment. >> the u.s. postal service was the least expensive every time. for example, its rate for second day delivery was about $12. fed ex and ups rates were more than $60. another gripe, valuable packages

>> meteorologist sandhya patel monitoring all this. looks scary. >> well, it is a serious storm. you definitely want to take precaution. let's talk about this storm. first to live doppler 7 hd and i will show you what's going on right now. we are dealing with some fog. it is dense in pockets, dense fog advisory starts at 1:00 in the morning until 10:00 a.m. visibility is poor right now, fairfield, concord area. here is the live picture from the east bay hills camera showing you the fog. we are panning around to give you the beautiful view as the sun has gone down but you will have to watch out during the morning commute. temperatures in the low 60s from san francisco to oakland, san jose, morgan hill. currently sfo very foggy view here but no delays are being reported. temperatures upper 50s to low 60s around our region and as we take a look at the first of many advisories, watches and warnings, it's a high surf advisory starting at 10:00 p.m. tonight, running until 10:00 a.m. friday. so that storm kicking up the

waves. breakers may exceed over 20 feet. we are talking about the risk of rip currents so watch out. don't climb on rocks. obviously don't turn your back on waves. high wind warning starts tomorrow or wednesday night, excuse me, which is tomorrow night, 10:00 p.m., runs until thursday at 10:00 p.m. this storm is going to generate very strong winds and those gusts could reach 50 miles an hour in urban spots, up to 80 at higher elevations with weakened trees from the drought and already some wet ground. you may see downed trees and power lines. gale warnings are up for the coast and the bay coming up as well. here is a look at the wind gust projection. at midnight thursday, looking at 50 mile an hour wind gusts. really kicking up. 56 miles an hour, 3:00 a.m. thursday. you might get woken up by the winds. still very strong winds, half moon bay, san francisco, 7:00 a.m. thursday, oakland, 50 miles an hour. then the winds start to let up around 1:00 p.m. on thursday. still staying on the breezy side. we are looking at also some heavy rain. flash flood watch wednesday

evening to thursday night. rapid rises of creeks and streams. be aware of your surroundings, you could run into ponding of roadways. when you take a look at the rainfall totals, you will see why. by 7:00 a.m. friday, we are talking five to eight inches in the north bay mountains. santa cruz mountains, four to six inches with most lower elevations two to four inches. the biggest concern here is that rain is going to come down over a short period of time. very heavy rainfall. take a look at the timing of this. 7:00 p.m. wednesday night, the rain is around the ukiah cloverdale area. it starts to slide southward. the start of the morning commute, heaviest rain is up around cloverdale with a chance of thunder. looks like thunderstorms are a pretty good possibility 7:00 a.m. on thursday. heavy rain, strong winds, stormy conditions. 9:00 a.m., as the cold front is coming through. by 3:00 p.m. thursday, still some pockets of light to moderate rain and then 5:00 p.m. thursday, we are still looking at a wet evening rush hour. 5:00 a.m. friday, rain switches

over to showers and we even start to see sun breaking through. 7:00 a.m. it starts to wind down a little bit. we will see snow in the sierra. this does have a cold air component to it. blizzard warning wednesday, 10:00 p.m. until friday, 1:00 p.m. i would not try driving up there. extremely dangerous, whiteout conditions expected. the blizzard warning is for 6,000 feet with gusts 50 to 80 miles an hour, 10 to 20 inches of snow. passes may actually get closed down for several hours, two to three feet is expected at the crest. tomorrow afternoon, 50s, 60s for your highs. as you take a look at the accuweather seven day forecast, this is what you really need to focus on. wind and rain late tomorrow night, stormy on thursday, showers on friday, particularly in the morning, afternoon hours, early afternoon. we get a break which is crucial on saturday. a weaker system between sunday night and monday, possibly lingering into tuesday. really, this is a storm we shouldn't take lightly. it's going to be a pretty big one. >> thank you, sandhya.
