our hearts are heavy. >> reporter: sinking in, two police officers shot to death on the streets of brooklyn in broad daylight. >> they were quite simply assassinated. >> reporter: police say the shooter, 28-year-old ismail walked up to the police car and fired his weapon several times through the front passenger window, striking the officers in the head several times. police say he then ran to a nearby subway station where he shot himself in the head. earlier on saturday in baltimore -- >> a female believed to be his former girlfriend was shot and seriously wounded at her residence. >> he posted on social media. >> which were anti-police. >> those postings alerted baltimore police, but their warning about his intention to harm police officers arrived in new york city at the same time the two officers were gunned

down. their killings incited outrage. >> to turn around and be executed on the streets. >> at the end of the day two families are missing somebody for the holidays and it's wrong. >> michelle franzen, abc news, new york. >> several law enforcement agencies around the u.s. including the san francisco police department are wearing black bands on their badges to mourn the officers killed today. berkeley police are investigating a suspicious death of a 20-year-old man. he was found outside of his home near the cal campus this morning. officers were called to the -- to piedmont avenue and dwight way around 4:00 a.m. he's identified as apoorve agarwal. he's believed to be a student at uc berkeley. he may have been drinking. an autopsy will be held to determine how he died. the second death near campus in a month. another 20-year-old man was found dead after a large party in november. he was an aerospace engineering

student at uc davis. he was celebrating his birthday and visiting friends in berkeley. police didn't get a call about an unresponsive man lying on the floor of the frat house until noon the following day. in napa tonight, outrage over a letter and questionnaire sent to tenants at a self storage facility. as we first reported last month, the tenants have not been allowed in their units because of earthquake damage. what many are calling a slap in the face now. we have a live report at the storage site with more. >> reporter: tenants got these in the mail today ask canning them to help them foot the bill to get access to a damaged bill that is red tagged. tenants found out it is possible to go in but it will cost them. >> i consider this to be extortion. and it is like ransom for our stuff.

>> reporter: tempers flared at this meeting in napa tonight as tenants of napa self storage sounded off about this letter from management. they were told to get stored property ou of building tenants will have to foot the bill. >> shocked they will make us pay for this. >> but it isn't cheap. it amounts to 12 times the person's monthly rent. >> does everyone agree our goal is to get our stuff out? building 900 was with red tagged after the earthquake in august. they have no idea what condition their possessions are in since they haven't had access. owners insist it needs to be demolished but a specialized crew can help them recover what they can safely. >> the fact their building did not stand up is their problem. we need to have access to our belongings. >> bad planning on our party

off clothing donations. they saw the news report about the flooding at the mobile home park and wanted to help replace some of the items people lost. a large tree fell on a lexus in gonld gate park this afternoon. it happened near 25th avenue. police say the driver swerved when he saw the tree come down in front of him. the branches hit the car and smashed the windshield and sunroof. the driver and passenger were not hurt. crossover drive was shut down while crews cleared the road. the bay area is bracing for some of the year's highest tides next week. the high water is causing flooding in mill valley. the tides are expected tomorrow through december 23rd. experts say it is a preview of what the bay area can expect as global warming causes sea levels to rise. king tides are expected in mid january and february. this is a live look outside

good evening. in tonight's headlines we are learning more about the killings of two new york city police officers. police say the man who shot them ambush style posted anti-police messages on instagram and had shot and injured his ex girlfriend in baltimore earlier in the day. the gunman killed himself. in berkeley, police are calling the death of a 20-year-old man suspicious. officers found his body this morning outside of his home near the cal campus. they say he may have been drinking. check out the flooding in mill valley. the king tides are here and the highest tides could mean standing water in some places tomorrow through tuesday. experts say the bay area can expect more king tides as global warming causes sea levels to rise. one day after president obama blamed north korea for the cyberattack on sony pictures the

communist regime has responded. think deny guilt but the u.s. intelligence says the north is behind the massive dump of private videos and documents that turned life upside down for the company. abc news reporter bazi kanani has the details. >> reporter: they claim they didn't do it but north korea says it wants to help the united states find out who's behind the massive hack attack on sony. on state-controlled television, the government proposed a point investigation with serious consequences if washington refuses. the interview was supposed to open christmas day. but this was the film's surprise ending as sony pulled the plug in the face of cyberthreats vowing violence. that was thumbed down from the critics. >> i think they made a mistake. >> you want us to kill the leader of north korea. >> reporter: sony said they had toen cancel distribution of the interview because theaters were refuse ing to show it.

abandon its ideals. three alleged spies recently freed by the u.s. got a standing ovation at the meeting. in miami, flag waving protesters took to the streets to pro-pest president obama's plan to normalize the relationship with the castro government. a couple hundred people showed up, mostly older cuban americans. former heavyweight champ mohammad alie is in the hospital tonight. a spokesman says the 72-year-old has a mild case of pneumonia. he has parkinsons disease and was admitted to a hospital earlier today. doctors say his prognosis is good because the pneumonia was caught early. nearly 99 million travellers are expected to hit the roads and skies this holiday season. analysts say an improving economy and lower gas prices combine to make it one of the busiest travel seasons on record, up 4% from last year. 89 million travelers are expected to take a road trip between december 23rd and

january 4th. as gas prices continue to drop, a watch dog committee has been set up to keep an eye out for suspicious price hikes in the new year. consumers union says some oil companies claim there is a hidden gas tax that will take effect in the new year. there's no such tax. what is taking effect is california's clean energy plan which gives refineries incentive to lower emissions a. if they exceed their limits they could pay a fine. consumers union wants to make sure oil companies don't raise prices to cover the fine. >> we want somebody in state government to look at why it happened and how it happened. we believe the state's clean energy programs aren't why it will happen. if it does we think it is price manipulation. >> the new petroleum advisory committee plans to meet in february after california's clean energy plan takes effect to see how or if it has affected

prices. more people are working in california and in the bay area, according to state numbers released on friday. unemployment rates dropped with the low nest marin and san mateo county. most of the new jobs are in the professional, scientific and services sector including high-tech jobs. the unemployment rate for the state is 7.2%. it was 8.4% a year ago. a world war ii veteran celebrates his 89th birthday with a parachute jump over a field in byron. he joined the air force when he was 19. today his daughter, who served as a lieutenant colonel, joined her dad on the jump. the last time boyd jumped from a plane was 70 years ago. he was shot down by the germans over yugoslavia and had to walk four days to safety. boyd flew a total of 26 missions before retiring from the air force in 1966.

caught in the act. new you tube video shows a man walking up to someone's doorstep, opening the gate and walking away with a holiday package. it happened on thursday on church street. after getting the package, he and the other suspect casually walk away. the homeowner posted this clip and filed a police report. he hopes someone will recognize them and turn them in. that's the latest example of what we are calling package pirates. it's not a new crime but there's a new twist this year. 7 on your side's michael finney has the latest on the crime of the season. >> reporter: it's a nice day in the sunset district of san francisco. midday, quiet, a letter carrier drops off a package. all of this is recorded by a surveillance camera mounted on a family home. andrew bolls mounted the camera and says the package was never sdplound my roommate let me

know, i think there was a package delivered but i don't see it. he kept looking outside. he knew it was delivered around 12:30. so that's when he told me, can we check the camera? >> so they pulled up the video and the roommate was right. the package had been delivered. sglit took about a half hour and we saw someone walk up the stairs, walk down and we say got ya. >> the video does not show the package actually picked up but it sure appears the person is walking away with more items than they were carrying when they arrived. here, you look at the video. it shows a pair working together, maybe even working the street. the one on the far side crosses over and meets up with the one on andrew's side of the street. they both carry what could be pamphlets or other paperwork. >> it is possible, because of the papers they are carrying, we think that maybe if someone answers the door they are ready to have an excuse as to why they
