>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 21st. let's start with a quick look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey there, carolyn. good morning. we have plenty of low level moisture. that is translating into some mist and drizzling around the bay. it is falling below the radar beam and the first 1,000 feet of the atmosphere so the radar isn't picking it up. but we have visibility reduced in oakland to a half-mile. a little better at sfo and a mile and a half in santa rosa. the moisture improving the visibility issues. but we will look for them to be with us throughout the morning hours. look what happens by late morning. so here we are, 5:00 this morning. then by about, let's say, 10:00,

11:00, we begin to clear. we are left still with clouds but sunshine throughout the day. it is the first day of winter. we will detail the king tide coming our way and a look at the christmas forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you. developing news, the shocking murders. two new york police officers. the officers were ambushed and murdered and never had an opportunity to draw their weapons. weaver also learned the gunman had made online anti-please postings. abc news reporter michelle franson has the latest. >> a break in the deadly attack in new york city leaving the police department and the new york mayor shaken. >> we try to bring some sense to the madness that occurred this afternoon on the streets of brooklyn. >> our city is in mourning. our hearts are heavy. >> two police officers shot to

death on the streets of brooklyn in broad day light. >> they were quite simply assassinated. >> police say the shooter, 28-year-old man, walk up to the parked police car and fired his weapon several times through the front passenger window, striking the officers in the head several times. police say he then ran into a nearby subway station where he shot himself in the head. earlier on saturday in baltimore -- >> a female, believed to be his former girlfriend, was shot and seriously wounded at her residence. >> he posted on social media. >> which were very anti-police. >> those postings alerted baltimore police. but their warnings with the intention to harm police officers arrived in new york city at the same time the two officers were gunned down. their killing insighted outrage.

>> two families are missing somebody for the holidays, and it's wrong. >> abc news, new york. >> the san francisco police department are wearing black badges on their badges this morning to mourn the two officers killed yesterday. >> new details. police in martinez are looking for a gunman that killed a young woman friday night. 18-year-old judith bean was shot to death. a second victim, a 25-year-old man, was wounded. he is expected to recover. according to our media partner, "the mercury news" his fatal shooting happened on the fifth anniversary of his older brother's murder. he was tortured and killed by a group and the body dumped on the rural road. he does not believe his daughter's murder is connected. berkeley police are investigating the suspicious

death of a 20-year-old man found outside his man near the cal campus early yesterday morning. fsers were called to piedmont avenue. he's been identified as apoorve agarwal. he's believed to be a student at u.s. berkeley. police say he may have been drinking. an autopsy is scheduled. this is the second death near campus in a month. another 20-year-old man was found dead after a large body at a fraternity in november. he was an aerospace engineering student at u.c. davis. he is from antioch and was celebrating his birthday and visiting friends in berkeley. in oakland firefighters are investigating a house fire. it began just before 8:00 last night at a home on 89th area. quite massive flames there. fortunately no one was inside at the time. there are no injuries. >> outrage in napa this morning after a letter, a questionnaire,

sent tosen nats at a self storage facility. as we first reported last month, the tenants have not been allowed to enter those units because of earthquake damage. now what many are calling a slap in the face. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> i consider this to be extortion. you know, it's like ransom for our stuff. >> tempers fared at this impromptu meeting in napa last night as they sounded off about the letter from management. they were told to get stored property out of the building or pennants will happen to help foot the bill. >> pretty shocked they are going to try to make us pay for this. >> what they suggested isn't cheap. it amounts to twelve times a person's monthly rent. >> does anyone agree that our main goal is to try to get our stuff out?

>> building 900 was red tagged after the earthquake this august. tenants have no idea what condition their possessions are in since they haven't had access. storage owners insist the building be demolished but a specialized crew can help tenants go in and recover what they can safely. >> the fact their building did not stand up is their problem. we need to have access to our belongings. >> bad planning on their part shouldn't constitute an emergency on ours. >> most can't afford to pay anywhere from 700 to $2,000 for access, which is outlined in this questionnaire. the mayor has agreed to check if the city's earthquake relief fund can help pay for this. >> we can spend a lot of time arguing who should pay for this. i would rather have our focus being on how are we going to get the stuff out of there. >> in napa. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> at a mobile home park in redwood city. flooded evacuees are back home

but remind he is of the damage are still all around them. sandbags and water pump line the roads on east bay shore road. this is the result of all the recent storms. there is still lots of sandy water that needs to be pumped out. sandbags are there to prevent flooding in the next storms. many of the people would live there are wearing new clothing today. volunteers with a foundation stopped by yesterday to drop off clothing foundation. they saw the news reports at all the flooding at the mobile home park and wanted to help replace some of the items people lost. a large tree fell on a lexus in san francisco's golden gate park yesterday afternoon. it happened on crossover drive near 25th avenue. police say the driver swerved when he saw the tree come down right in front of him. the branches hit the car, smashed the windshield and the sunroof. driver and his passenger were not hurt. crossover drive was shut down

while emergency crews cleared the road. the bay area is breaking for some of the year's highest tides this week. high water is already causing flooding in mill valley. the high tides, also known as king tides are expected through december 23rd. they said it's a preview of what can happen if global warming causes sea levels to rise. they expected also in mid-january and mid-february. lease, you have been talking about the king tides. >> yeah. it's good it's past the commute. but good morning. we are looking at light rain around oakland and hayward this morning, the golden gate bridge and santa rosa reporting rain. it is mild. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. what you see receipt now will quickly dissipate and we will be into a much dryer pattern.

rain last week trying to get my shopping done. what does the weather hold for this week? lisa argen will be along shortly with all the answers and a full accuweather forecast. >> a ran rafael man who treated patients in liberia is back in the bay area in quarantine. david perkins was placed on a 21 day quarantine by main health officials. they say it's just precautionary. they have no reason to believe he has ebola. he left on november 4th to treat ebola patience with the humanitarian medical aid organization heart-to-heart. lava in hawaii continues to flow down and it is expected to reach a shopping center in about 8 days. it's advanced about 180 yards since yesterday as it makes its way to marketplace.

most merchants have closed or are preparing to close. the marketplace is a major retail hub for the area. it began back on june 27th. we are now just four days from christmas, and the holiday shopping season is in full swing. analysts say yesterday was one of the biggest shopping days of the year with around $10 billion -- that's with a b -- billion dollars in sales expected. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> at shopping centers throughout the bay area, the rush is on. >> it's crazy in here. >> for some people, like molly, this is their first day of holiday shopping. >> i'm last minute shopping because i've been very busy with my personal life and work life and just now having a chance to switch over into the christmas

mode. >> in daly city we talked to people who already got most of their shopping done online but have to come here for the must-have items. >> how long did you wait in line? >> waited about an hour. >> the shoes she bought are the latest michael jordans. this is the line she and her sister waited in. they are each holding a ticket they got earlier this week that would give them a chance to fork down more than $200 for the sneakers. the shoppers are likely here for holiday deals. >> people are looking for outerwear just because it's more pricey and there are good deals. >> wherever you look merchandise is on display. most talk to us the sale will likely last right up until the last minute, christmas day. abc7 news. >> in san francisco the holiday was made a little happier for children who's parents are in jail. in inmates were able to give gifts to their kids thanks to a

family program and parenting program. they took a parenting class and wrote things and only one thing could be a material item. during a special visit the parents got to spend time with their children and give them those gifts. a lot of happy children are playing with new toys this morning thanks to some generous bay area donors. for the 30th year, bly family services of san francisco gave away donated toys. these gifts are the only ones some of these children will receive for the holidays. 10,000 toys were given out yesterday morning. and glide is still accepting donations. they must be new up and wrapped. a south bay holiday donation program is short of toys for teenagers. hundreds of volunteers were hard at work in san jose yesterday getting toys ready for kids. sacred heart community service has already distributed ingredients for holiday meals to 3200 families.

"7 on your side." >> skiers and snowboarders in tahoe must feel like kids on christmas morning right now. they have had a ton of snow in the last few days. all major ski resorts are expected to opie the end of today. boreal has seen as least a foot of fresh snow over the last five days. squaw, alpine and kirkwood have seen at least two feet. how does that compare to last year, ms. argen? >> it is definitely better but they are certainly lagging behind. bay area rainfall is up to 200% and the average for snowfall is about half that, 50%. not bad. mother nature is not really going to help out in that department in the days ahead. right now light rain in blue canyon, 32 degrees. 47 is the truck tee temperature and 46 at the tahoe valley airport. you may have learned how warm it's been and we have temperatures right now in the 60s. it is certainly mild and it's going to stay that way for the morning hours and even the next couple of days. live doppler 7hd.

we aren't seeing the rain here because it's falling below the radar beam. but we certainly have it from santa rosa to oakland and hayward, up to marin county. and also san francisco. but the fog is not as bad because we have a little bit of the mixing going on with the low level winds. as a result half-mile visibility in oakland. that's not great, but elsewhere we are looking up to three miles in santa rosa, 6 miles in napa. this time yesterday we had much less visibility out there. we have that going for us n lake tahoe we talked about the warm temperatures and today some cloudy skies in the sierra nevada. right now look at the numbers. 59 in san francisco. certainly expecting delays at sfo, 60. 57 in san jose. look at that foggy golden gate bridge. we are looking at the visibility reduced for the next several hours. past the 10:00 hour we will get into some improvement.

57 in fairfield as well as novato and napa and 59 in livermore. here's the ex-moratorium camera. cloudy and mist and drizzle. winter begins this afternoon, 3:03 and we are looking at a dry and quiet start to the winter season. as high pressure begins to firmly grip the bay area by later on today. with that we will have the low clouds or the fog, i should say, throughout the morning hours. look at this. big dome of high pressure off the coast. still have all that moisture. this is set to push in to the eastern pacific and bring partly cloudy skies. temperatures in the 60s. maybe even a 70-degree reading by tuesday, which looks to be the warmest day of the week. then the ridge will slide out of town. here we are 9:00 this morning. still plenty of clouds. moisture offshore. as we go through the noon hour, notice we have breaks in the clouds. we will see still the high clouds in the ceiling but some peaks of sun throughout the afternoon. looking to be pretty decent afternoon with finally a chance

good reason for. that the radar beam is well up above the low-level moisture. so all the moisture that's falling is close to the ground. and the radar beam isn't able to detect that. that's why we are looking at conditions that look like nothing is going on out there, but, you know it is. we've got fog and we certainly have rain showers. light rain from the north bay over to oakland and hayward. it is allowing for the visibility to be a little bit better in the north bay. but we are down to a mile and three quarters half moon bay. half-mile visibility in oakland. and looking at good visibility throughout concord and fairfield this morning. it could change. we are looking at high pressure situated off the coast that will certainly change the picture downtown here today. from our roof camera, it's 59 downtown with 57 in redwood city. in san jose. 54 in morgan hill. and a mild 59 degrees half moon bay. overnight lows you may have noticed they are 10 to 15 degrees warmer than we should be at this time of year. that's due to all the cloud

cover, the moisture. we will begin to dry things out throughout the mid-afternoon hours. in this picture, though, it will be similar each and every morning as the low clouds and fog reform. 57 in napa, 57 in fairfield with 59 in livermore. so we will look for the temperatures today. it won't take much for them to boost up into the 60s again. the exploratorium camera, the forks mist and drizzle. winter begins just after 3:00 this afternoon. and it does also initiate a pat everybody change for a dry and quiet start to the winter season. here's why. notice all the green over the state of california. and not all of this is reaching the ground but it is associated with some moisture. and right here is a ridge of high pressure. eye going to build into the eastern pacific. so the rest of today, tomorrow, into tuesday, this ridge will allow for much dryer conditions. but with the stable atmosphere we will have low clouds and fog at night once again. we will wait for some sun. here's the pattern then today.

we will have backman skies -- partly cloudy skies by the afternoon. the 2:00, 3:00, we will see more sunshine and temperatures could be as warm as the mid-60s. pretty mild. look at tahoe. 48 degrees. 70 in los angeles for the 48 hour forecast. most of the state will be dry except the extreme northwestern corner. high temperatures today from the mid-60s in napa, low to mid-60s elsewhere. upper 50s should do it from half moon bay with the very high surf. no advisories, though. accuweather seven-day forecast, a chance for the light mist and drizzle with fog this morning. then warmer, milder, sunnier, but we will have the fog tomorrow morning and tuesday. a slight chance of showers in the north bay was the weak frontal band brushes the north bay and then we will see mix of clouds and sun for christmas. friday and saturday looking good. sometimes when it happens the pattern shuts off and we don't see rain again until the next
