11:36 pm
thank you for watching. thank you for coming here to my home. appreciate that. thank you for joining us during -- it's the most wonderful time of the year right now. we're exactly two weeks away from christmas today. this is kind of interesting. there's a holiday gift giving trend that's supposedly on the rise this year called self-gifting. as in, oh, my god, i just caught my husband in his office self-gifting. they say 30% of purchases made over the thanksgiving weekend were the result of self-gifting. shoppers go to the store to buy gifts and wind up getting something for themselves. because learning to gift yourself is the greatest gift of all. [ applause ] i don't know why everything has to have a term. is self-gifting even a thing? didn't that used to be called shopping? i've been doing it for years. [ laughter ] there's nothing wrong with it. it's okay to buy a gift for yourself. buying a gift and wrapping it for yourself, that's pathetic. that is not okay. for lunch today, i gifted myself a roast beef sandwich.
11:37 pm
as a small token appreciation for all i do for me over the year. the other thing i haven't figured out is gift cards. on one hand, it nice to get someone something, but on the other hand, it's kind of like saying, i care about you, but not quite enough to leave the line at albertson's to find a real gift. nothing costs exactly the amount on the gift card. it's less, you wind up with a credit for, like, $3, which you'll never use. if it's more, then you're partly buying your own gift. look what we got me. [ laughter ] i only use a gift card online because, and this is true, i'm too embarrassed to use them in person. i would rather get one of those giant checks like publisher's clearinghouse used to have. at least that's like a comedy ice breaker. the worst is when somebody gives you a gift card to a restaurant. that, by the way, is especially sexy on a date. laughter ] dinner's on my mom. [ laughter ] someone -- [ cheers and applause ] thank you.
11:38 pm
if someone gives you a gift card to a restaurant, they should have to show up at the end of the meal and hand it to your waiter themselves. [ laughter ] gift cards would be better if they put honest messages on the card. like this -- if a gift card said, i know nothing about you. so, i got you a starbucks card. or a best buy card that says, i put zero thought into this. or, this applebee's card for $20, which basically means tip not included. this one from bed, bath and beyond. this will be in your wallet for years. or -- [ applause ] a card from walmart, which is a simple way of saying screw you. [ laughter ] i get a lot of gift cards and i wish you could cash them in to buy other gift cards, give them out as gifts but you can't. at this point, i have so many unused gift cards, i decided to have them made into a sweater. where's guillermo? guillermo, come out here. guillermo is modeling -- [ cheers and applause ]

11:40 pm

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: how do you -- can you do that by accident? i don't think you can. hey, can you guess -- can you guess which musician made the most money this year? the answer is d, dr. dre. dr. dre earned $620 million between june of this year and

[ laughter ] $620 million, that is a lot of money. that's -- that's the kind of financial freedom that allows you to add avocado to your order without even thinking about it. [ laughter ] according to forbes magazine, which puts together this list, $620 million is the most money any musician has ever made in a single year. the second-highest paid of the year was beyonce, she made $115 million, slacker. but the crazy thing is, dr. dre made $620 million without even touring or releasing an album. and he didn't see a single patient in that time, either. the money came from selling his company, beatz, to apple, for, like $3 billion, which really, considering that, does he still count on the musician's list? or is he just a very successful audio equipment salesman? and while we're on the subject of huge sums of money, this is -- i find this shocking. a photograph just sold for $6.5 million.
11:42 pm
it's the most money ever paid for a photo. it's a work of an australian landscape photographer named peter lik. and this is the photograph that's -- oh, wait. that's not -- [ laughter ] that is not the photograph. that -- that one only sold for $3 million. this is the photograph that sold for $6.5 million. and yet, we are all looking at it now for free, which means they overpaid. [ laughter ] if i was dr. dre, i would buy that photograph and roll a joint with it. [ laughter ] just to show -- [ applause ] the piece is called -- don't encourage him. or me. the piece is called "phantom." it was taken in arizona and while $6.5 million sounds like a lot, that includes an eight by ten, three five by sevens and, like, a dozen wallet size, so -- this is the second-most expensive photograph ever sold. it's called "rhine 2." it was shot and sold in 2011 for $4.3 million. which seems like a lot to pay

for something that looks like a test photo you take to make sure the timer on your camera is working and then you run around and get in the shot. i'll tell you something, to get me to pay that much for a photograph, it would have to be a picture of jesus riding the loch ness monster. >> jimmy: hi there, we are back. still to come, music from blake shelton. our next guest is a golden globe-winning, oscar-nominated actress and well-known t-rex survivor whom you can see alongside reese witherspoon in the critically acclaimed new movie "wild." it's playing in select cities now. please welcome laura dern. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: how are you doing? >> i'm good. i'm so happy to be sitting, i'm a little flustered because my dog just ate nine chocolate protein bars. >> jimmy: oh, that's no good. >> on my way here. but i thought it was a good segue into seeing you -- >> jimmy: nine chocolate -- is your dog working out? >> he's working out. and they are clif bars that honor the movie "wild" which does involve hiking on the pct. i think he was bulking up, getting ready for a hike. >> jimmy: isn't it dangerous for docks to eat chocolate?
12:21 am
>> so dangerous. >> jimmy: maybe not real chocolate, right? >> not too much. and he is, like, a giant 90-pound lab. >> jimmy: i see. >> i can do this. but he left the wrapping, like, meticulously laid out, like he really opened it. >> jimmy: well, he's neat then. is he a chocolate lab. >> he's a chocolate -- there you go. i didn't get that. >> jimmy: that's what it is. they need a certain amount of chocolate. >> every once in awhile. >> jimmy: to keep the lab going, yeah. well, i hope that works out okay. >> everything's good. >> jimmy: you know, blake shelton's wife will take that animal from you if you don't -- >> i know. we just discussed this. it's all taken care of. >> jimmy: okay, very good. it's very good to see you. i ran into you once. i love the show "enlightened" you were on on hbo. >> oh, thank you. >> jimmy: that was a great show. [ cheers and applause ] this movie, which, by the way, i watched and it's really good. i think it reaffirmed my commitment never to hike. >> yes, mine, too. >> jimmy: you play reese witherspoon's mom, which is
12:22 am
weird, because you're really very -- you're close in age. how -- what's the age difference? >> well, no, we're within a few years of each other, actually, but you know, we're telling a story that spans over 20 years, and the beauty of getting to play cheryl, who wrote this amazing book, "wild," to play her mother, it honors their incredible friendship and this love story between this mother and daughter who were, actually, close in agened ended up going to college together and having this beautiful love story and, in fact, in the film, she says, my mother was the love of my life. so, it spans through her memory on the trail, her entire childhood. >> jimmy: you rarely see a movie where the mother and daughter -- most of the time they are at odds in the movie. it was very sweet to see that and it was very sad, also, i don't want to give too much away of the film, but -- it's all true. based on this woman's true story. >> it is. and we've had the most incredibly privileged time talking about the film with

audiences and at q and as because it is about healing and grief and longing and all those things people walk through. i don't think there's been a q and a where reese and i don't end up in tears. >> jimmy: oh, you guys cry? that's fun. >> we cry every time. and cheryl shows up and opens her mouth and speaks so beautifully and so then we cry when she's talking. >> jimmy: wow. >> it's a cry fest. >> jimmy: it sounds terrible, kind of. [ laughter ] >> we're actresses. >> jimmy: please don't cry here. i don't know -- >> i'm getting a little teary. >> jimmy: are you really? okay, all right, if you start crying, i'll start trying, too, to make you feel better. reese's character has some graphic sex scenes in the movie. as her mother, do you approve of that? i mean -- [ laughter ] >> ah -- yes. i mean, i was raised by actors, and so i feel like we're a group of people who navigate all that we have to walk through and she and i talked about, you know, filming intimate scenes where you want it to be about fear and vulnerability and a lot of
12:24 am
things the film honors and sometimes you have to hurl yourself into the void and i told her a story of working with alexander paine on "citizen roof," which on the first day i had a scene like this and he said, oh, it's great, i want you to meet your co-star, we just picked him up at the bar. he's really excited to do the scene. >> jimmy: what do you mean? >> that's exactly what i mean. >> jimmy: just met him picked him up at the bar? >> he was really happy to be there. >> jimmy: they brought a drunk guy to come have a love scene with you? >> not exactly. he was, you know, wonderful actor. but yeah, he was just cast -- >> jimmy: was he even an actor? >> not exactly. >> jimmy: no, yeah, wow. >> i think he is now. that's how it goes. >> jimmy: why do they do that, where -- [ applause ] do the love scene on the first day. seems like you want to ease into that, right, no? seems to be a strategy that goes on? >> get traumatized early on. >> jimmy: your character in the movie is raising two children and going to college at the time time and trying to get something going.
12:25 am
you were plucked out of college by david lynch. >> yes. >> jimmy: tell us how that happened. >> i was two days into university and now it's much easier to take a leave of absence, but then, you couldn't really leave school to -- >> jimmy: once you start, you have to go. >> yeah. so, on day two, i got the movie and asked to leave and it was like, no, if you want to go do a movie, then you have a job and you're not a student. bye. and now my friends who have gone to film school at that school say that one of the few movies that they study to get their degree is "blue velvet," the movie i left for. >> jimmy: the movie you left to do. >> i'm so bummed. >> jimmy: short-sighted. >> yeah. >> jimmy: do you have any desire to one day go back? >> i did a few years ago, i went back to school and i learned why they say this thing of, you know, education is wasted on youth, because i was in a class, i'm in my early 30s and
12:26 am
everybody else is 17 and i was so excited about everything. learning was amazing! and the teacher was saying, we're going to discuss classism in india. i was like, classism in india! and everybody is texting, bored, miserable. and he said, you know, does anybody know the film "passage to india." i was like, oh, my god, me! i realized no one else had heard of that film because they hadn't been born yet. so, yeah, it was a little awkward. i was very excited. >> jimmy: it sounds like you were a little too enthusiastic. did the other students care for that or did they tolerate it? >> i think they didn't notice. >> jimmy: they didn't notice. they were texting. >> yeah, they were buried in their devices. >> jimmy: your dad was here last year. he's quite a character. i don't have to tell you, i guess. >> oh, my god. first of all, he loves you. >> jimmy: oh, that's nice. >> and if i may, because i told him i was coming here, he said, "that man is the best at what he does --" >> jimmy: oh, that's nice. [ cheers and applause ]
12:27 am
>> but he said, he said he loves that you pay tribute to who has come before you. he's like, he knows jack parr, he knows what it's like to sit in that chair. >> jimmy: who is jack parr? [ laughter ] >> but he said, kid, listen, be careful of that green room. i was like, okay. he's like, there's a lot of drinking going on back there. and it is a party. let me tell you. >> jimmy: does he hover over you in that way? >> no, your show is the only time he's ever warned me. jk oh, really? that's the warning he gives you about coming here? yeah, and your mom, you were raised by actors, she played your mom in "enlightened." >> yes. >> jimmy: and i know it was a tv show, but all i could think of when i watch that tv with you guys, oh, she seems like a terrible mom. that's good acting, i guess. >> she's a great actress. she's amazing and certainly my muse, as we worked on "wild" and reese and i both very fiercely close to our mothers, actually screened the movie of "wild" sitting with our moms together.
12:28 am
>> jimmy: for them. oh, what did they think? >> it was beautiful. and they were sweet and it was tender and amazing to watch a film about this love, you know? and i noticed our two southern moms do like to talk to the screen. equally. >> jimmy: oh, they do? >> so, yeah, it was very entertaining. >> jimmy: during the movie? >> oh, yeah. oh, no, oh, no, that poor girl, she's in trouble. what is that? is that a rattlesnake? every moment on the trail, they're panicked. >> jimmy: she must have went nuts during "jurassic park," then. >> oh, forget it. could barely watch. >> jimmy: it's very good to see you. congratulations on the movie. it's called "wild." it's playing in select cities. laura dern, everybody. we'll be right back with blake shelton.
