it was through a friend with white house connections. he was asked to drive around the white house pressboard during the president's bay area visit. and several vehicles behind the commander in chief. >> it's exciting to drive in the motorcade and run stop lights and stop signs. crazy. a crazy operation. >> but some are questioning the decades-long practice. volunteer drivers going through a background check and that's about it. no training, just a briefing the day of. >> it is a collection for the drivers on that end. it's sub-par. >> motorcade begins with local police who block intersections, the and more secret service and white house staff vans. the press corps crew is ahead of the ambulance and tail police. the concern is the untrained volunteer driver could cause an accident or a delay in an emergency. he said he wasn't surprised how things were done, but in the end everything worked out fine.

>> everybody else was on there, they are very stand-up people, very qualified to be doing what they were doing, which is really being glorified shuttle drivers. >> according to the new york times, the secret service defends the practice, saying that the volunteer drivers are briefed and the president and agents can detach from the press corps at any time. abc7 news. >> there are new reports that jim harbaugh will meet with representatives from the university of michigan this weekend and another report that the deal is already done. according to the network and fox sports, they are in the bay area and ready to sign harbaugh to a six-year, $48 million contract that would make him the highest-paid coach in college football. the raiders are also interested, but can't talk to him as long as he's still under contract.

meanwhile a phoenix sports anchor report that harbaugh and michigan have already agreed to terms on a deal and he will be returned as the new wolverines coach an tuesday if he signs with michigan. the report says harbaugh will inform the 49er players about his decision after tomorrow's game. happening today, thousands of people are expected at the funeral for new york police officer raphael ramos. here's a live look from queens, new york where officer ramos funeral is schedule today get underway in an hour. this is the cypress hills area of queens. 409-year-old lamb mows was killed back on 20th along with a fellow officer. liu as they sat in a patrol car on a brooklyn street. the mayor visited the wake last night. mayor and vice president joe biden are expected to speak at the funeral. a gunman targeted ramos and the other officer at random.

mayor-elect said holding a protest for the sole reason to try to deny oakland police a day off on christmas represents a new low. peaceful protesters greeted after christmas shoppers in a san francisco. the group gathered yesterday with signs that read "black and brown lives matter." they said they wanted to interrupt shoppers to remind them some lives have been interrupted by police violence. the wife of a police officer the bay area is taking to facebook saying she fears protesters will attack her or her family. kgo radio reports she posted, "you thugs, we're ready for you." she wants to remain anonymous. >> we are all on heightened awareness and now have guard dogs in my yard and own guns. and lighting on the exterior of our homes. they are now things we pay very close attention to. >> i'm perfectly comfortable with a firearm, and i will use it if my life is threatened or i

have a strong perception that my life is being threatened. >> the threats are somewhat similar to what is going on in san jose. the police are investigating an officer there. some are demanding that be fired after they sale he threatened protesters on twitter. a group played music to raise money for the michael brown we love our sons and daughters foundation. the public wearness fund is named a unarmed teenager who was shot and killed bay ferguson police officer. fremont police say a wild coyote attacked three people only christmas day. the animal bit a five-year-old boy on the leg, and ten minutes later it bit a man on star street, and then a runner tried to chase them and he had to kick it away. the coyote looked sick and they killed it.

the tri-city animal shelter is waiting on test results to see if it has rakes. -- rabies. >> this week people are on guard after a mountain lion killed a deer in their neighborhood. they heard screaching coming from outside of their homes. when officers checked it out at 8:00 a.m. they found a deer carcass. they said they were awakened from the big cat attacked. >> we heard a thumb many on the roof and we heard a loud screechy scream, high-pitch screech scream. it was shattering. >> it was a mauling of sorts, and we could hear that something was in peril. >> animal control and wildlife officials have been notified. time now is 6:10 on your saturday morning. weather-wise, what are we look ache head to on this fine day? >> it's 47 downtown

>> welcome back. taking a live look outside from our exploratorium cam. pointing out the holiday lights at the embarcadero center. lisa will let us know how the weather is shaping up. the average price of gas across the united states has dropped to it's lowest level in five years at $2.31 a gallon. in missouri the average gallon of gas is $1.85. the reason for it? the u.s. is producing considerably more oil. other nations are having to adapt and drop their crude prices. americans are saving hundreds and thousands of dollars.

however, an energy expert at u.c. berkeley said the drop is bad for our country because it reignite's americans dependence on fossil fuel. >> these low prices just prolongs the death holds of that fossil fuels stranglehold. so in my view isolates bad and it makes buying a hybrid or gas efficient car not as effective. price at missouri is 2:67 a gallon and san francisco it's 16 cents more expensive at $2.85 a gallon. shopping and teenagers go hand and hand, but not all have huge closets. some don't have one at all. that's why one high schooler in the east bay is asking for clothing donation force underprivileged youth. alisa harrington has more on the

charity. >> teenagers sift through bags of clothing donated to their charity, one closet. this gal started one closet in oakland back when she was in high school. he collecting gently used items. >> teens and foster youth only have $200 for clothes a year. and that was really interested to me because i definitely spend a lot more than that. even usually on one shopping trip. >> the idea is for teens to give to other teens in need. laura passed the torch to riley when she left for college earlier this year. boxes of clothes are packed in this garage in alamo. >> it makes me happy to see that people give stuff to help out others. >> in four years they have collected more than 40,000 garment, helping hundreds of teenagers. >>ty think it would come this far. >> their moms have also played a role in the nonprofit organization and are dedicated to their daughters' cause. >> i'm so proud of her. i really am proud of her.

between the bay area. 30s and 40s with patchy frost north of the golden gate. also east of the bay bridge. we are talking about a windchill of 33 degrees for you in concord. so it is certainly cold out there from our roof camera. you are looking at numbers in the upper 40s san francisco. it really hasn't budged much here. 42 in oakland. 42 morgan hill. lost another degree, 45 half moon bay and 36 in san jose. that it's our exploratorium camera and looking pretty nice out there. but if you head up to the north bay you are below freezing in napa. santa rosa 33. it's 34 in novato. 35 by the delta. and livermore. numbers in the mid-30s as well, and along monterey. a hard freeze down here where w. the numbers in the mid-30s. emeryville camera shows with the clear skies we will have a sunny afternoon for the most part. patchy, valley frost early on.

seasonably cool temperatures today and tomorrow. a few high clouds later on today and unfortunately the storm door stays shut for next week. we can't rule out maybe a few light snowflakes around mt. hamilton with the next cold outbreak. i guess that would qualify as a little bit of precip. here's a look at our radar and satellite perspective. a cool, dry air mass. we will have northerly winds that reestablishes the cooler air. but the quiet pat everybody is set for the weekend. and that artic air, more descends further south for new year's eve, into new year's day. with that some gusty winds come early next week. that will add to the bite in the air. we are in the single digits, truckee and the tahoe valley airport. the 20s come new year's day and that means waking up to

port of oakland. 12 to 15 ships a week have come to oakland in recent months, surpassing anything they have seen in the past decade. they say heavy port congestion in southern california is probably the blame, forcing many cargo ships to travel north to oakland. several bay area community colleges are among dozens statewide that are offering low cost bachelor degrees not offered to the usc or csu systems. they say making four year bachelor degrees in technical areas are increasingly necessary. they allow other colleges to offer some four year degree. the bay area colleges include are green valley college in san jose, moot foote hill college in napa valley and solano community college in fairfield. technology developed in bay area will save millions of lives in africa. they are making a drug to treat and kill malaria that we first

profiled in 2011. now as cheryl jennings reports, the promise is becoming a reality. >> for millions of people in africa, protecting themselves from the mosquitoes that carry malaria is a constant battle fought with bed nets and insecticides. but now help arriving in the form of a drug that can treat the disease quickly and inexpensively. >> it's taken three tablets. it's a drug called ardiminicin. for decades it's been made solely from the worm wood plant. but instead they have developed a way to genetically modify yeast to produce the same drug in huge brewery-type tanks. >> instead of he spitting out alcohol, it spits out with drug. >> they ship it to a french based pharmaceutical company. and after years in development the company announced the first major delivery, more than

but space-x wants to keep the lower space of the falcon 9. that base section is 14 stories tall and will be climbing at a speed of nearly a mile per second. in early january space-x plans to land it standing straight up on a barge floating in the ocean. the target is just 30 feet and the target will be moving, since it is a floating barge at best. space-x estimates it has a 50% chance of pulling off the landing. good luck to them. all right. lisa, weather-wise, for people heading up to the sierra this morning, getting a jump start on their day, it's pretty chilly? >> it's cold. we have temperatures in the attorneys right now. going for a high of 38 at south lake this afternoon. right now from mt. tam, it's cold, but the wind has at 2500 feet around 20 miles an hour. mixing the cold air. but down in the valley, we are talk 31 in napa. we will talk about the rest of the bay area and another cold snap that is coming your way before the edged of the year coming up. >> thank you very much, lisa.

let's broaden the world's energy mix, let's go. >> all the recent rain is creating a problem for a postseason recycling program in the area. for years, leftover christmas trees were brought to a few east bay lakes and used for fish. this is video of the underwater reefs. the program has been around for more than a decade. but this year there's too low

water. here's a look at the program and the problem. >> what you are going to see at clear lake, the most full it's been in the last five or six years. >> this the view from sky 7hd. reefs installed when low have created the perfect environment for habitat. now lakes regained much of what they lost, and it has a lot to do with christmas. >> what we do is we use unsold christmas trees that get donated to the parks and create reefs out of the trees. >> joe is the acting manager. >> we're in his playground or office, however you choose to look at it. he said old christmas trees are a gift for fish and the ecosystem. these pictures are from previous reef build-outs. this year mother nature has put the brakes on from the tradition. >> this year the water is so high, we didn't have to put in the reefs and there is little room to put reefs in. >> you don't have to look hard to see what he's talking about.

this made for a perfect day of fishing. the reefs are a big reason why. >> water is coming over places before we never saw water. >> the fish are biting, but it hasn't always been the case. last year more than a thousand unsold christmas trees made the reef. this underwater video shows how quickly fish took residence along the newly christmas trees. those who fish don't care what it takes, as long as they are biting and aren't forced to go home empty-handed. for this five-year-old, today is a lesson in patience. >> he likes fishing so he say let's go fishing and i go, okay, get a boat and try out. >> the tree reef is good for the environment, and popular with fish and fishermen, but they aren't the only ones who benefit.

fairfield and 35 in livermore. the wind-chill factor about 33. a light south wind. the wind wasn't kicking up in the higher elevation of mt. diablo and mt. tam and that's aloud for the warmer numbers in some makes. but overall 24 hours ago we were warm early. this morning 13 degrees cool better i the delta, the napa, the san charles airport and 9 degrees cooler in mountain view. a look from emeryville, it's chilly out there with the patchy valley frost. cool today and tomorrow. the storm door for the most part stays shut with another cold outbreak on new year's eve and new year's day. we could ring out snow around mt. hamilton before the year is out. and that snow level would take us to about 3,000 feet with low moisture. the rest of the bay area staying drive. atlanta come positive shows double barrel high pressure

today with the cool and dry air mass. once that next cool air mass comes our way, the winds will pick up, as well. that's going to add another chill factor to the air. but we are quiet overall with no storms headed our way. that will keep us dry and really the headline is the chilly air. we are talking about a frost advisory down toward san diego this morning. 53 in chico. 58 monterey. with 37 right now. 57 in fresno. high temperatures today around the bay ranking from the mid-50s in concord and fairfield. 54 antioch, 57 in san francisco. now we will have another chilly night tonight. but then we will see a little bit more high cloudiness in parts of the bay to keep numbers around 40 degrees tonight for san mateo. 41 half moon bay. look for more mid-30s around morgan hill. 33 napa and maybe more frost up toward santa rosa and napa. after that on monday we get a west wind, maybe some fog.

here's rick quan with this morning's sports. >> it's not yet official but it looks like 49ers coach jim harbaugh will return to his all alma mader the university of michigan. he will be formally introduce on tuesday. the athletic director and president is said to be in the bay area to seal the deal. they reportedly already offered him a six-year, $48 million contract that would make him the highest paid coach in college football. raiders and jets are also rumored to be in the running. once again he refused to talk about his future. >> you know, we thought about it very thoroughly. >> what will happen? >> what will happen will happen and what won't happen won't happen. as for sunday's game. they can claim a title and seattle loses to st. louis. because of injuries, arizona will be starting quarterback ryan vinley. this will be harbaugh's last hoorah with the niners, it may also be the last for some others.
