. >> live from the broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good morning everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday december 28th. plane start with a quick first look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning carolyn. live doppler 7hd is quiet but as we head outside you notice the air. emeryville is nice and sunny but we have a spare-the-air day today. temperatures already responding to the sunshine with mid-40s. 48 half moon bay and a little further east from the east bay hills camera we have the haze and we have low 40s for low.

43 by the delta and finally at the airport no delays. you can see the fog. look for mid-and upper 50s today underneath sunny skies. we have big changes before we say good-bye to 2014. that's coming up. >> thank you lisa. in developing news, nine months after after the last disappearing airport, a plane is missing over southeast asia. suspended as night falls over the region. boats continue to look for airasia 8501. david are youky has the latest. >> this is airbus 320 that's disappeared from radar and is missing this morning. search crews spent the days looking for any sign of the aircraft that was flying through strong weather early saturday morning. airasia, a low cost carrier serving the area, said at the

present time we have no further information regarding the status of the passenger and crewmembers on board but we will keep our parties informed as more information becomes available. the majority of the 161 on board of end donations, including infants. this took off heading for singapore. it ran in thunderstorms and turbulence and the pilot asking to turn west and increase his altitude from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet. it feels over the seas the last time the jet communicated with controllers. at least two aircraft were used by the civil aviation authority to search during the daylight hours. airasia said it's cooperating fully. the six-year-old jet has a good safety record, as does the carrier. already they are running an emergency call center for fam play friends and waiting areas in singapore where the plane was supposed to lands. stark contrast of malaysia

australia and we said never again, never again should well lose on airplane and here we are almost 24 hours into another missing aircraft. in this day and age there is enough technology we should never lose an airplane. we should know right where it is right now and ought to have ships and rescue people throughout right now. >> it's been nearly a day and there hasn't been any sign of the day it's an indication more still needs to be done to improve airplane tracking technology. this morning a woman is recovering after being rescued in bodega bay by firefighters. any said a woman in her 60s many slipped on rocks at the beach yesterday, dislocating her shoulder. a helicopter lifted the woman from the beach to the parking lot where an ambulance was waiting to take her to the hospital. >> another story a ferry caught

fire off a greek island. ferry, with nearly 500 people on board; in noel immediate danger of sinking. it was traveling from greece to italy had it caught fire in gale force winds forcing authorities to order an evacuation. officials say those efforts are difficult because of high winds and poor visibility and hundreds of people are still on board the vessel. here in the bay area two people are hurt after a truck slammed into a buddhist temple in san jose. it happened around 7:30 last night on story road near waters drive. witnesses say the truck took out a light pole and some powerlines before crashing into the building. a monk inside the temple and the driver both have minor injuries. police have arrested the driver on suspicion of drunk driving. >> new york city landmarks are paying tribute to the officers killed last weekend in brooklyn. at the empire state build you

respects. the department tweeted this photo yesterday. and a captain from the oakland police department tweeted this photo showing an oakland police officer side by side with a new york city officer. happening today, demonstrators will hit the streets of san francisco protesting police brutality. today's protest comes after a group gathered across the bay in oakland for a black lives matter demonstration yesterday. a handful of protesters stood at the intersection of broadway and 14th street. traffic slowed, but was not stopped, and the protest did remain peaceful. today's demonstration in san francisco gets underway at 10:00 in front of city hall. the american civil liberties union could decide if another california's school decision to ban those t-shirts reading "i can't breathe" violates free speech. mendocino high school students

wore the shirts before games just like you see nba players doing there in memory of eric garner. now fort brag high school, who is hosting the tournament, said they banned the shirts as a security precaution. >> cold temperatures across the bay area. staying bundled up and wearing layers seems to be the mandate for those walk ag long the embarcadero last night where temperatures dipped below 50 degrees. it was the same situation in san rafael. folks waiting in line at popular restaurants huddled to stay warm. >> it's brisk. it's pretty crisp i've got to say. it's not freezing, but you want a hoodie on, you want a beanie. >> but cold weather also makes it a struggle for homeless to stay warm.

>> crews are getting ready to shut down the golden gate bridge in about two weeks. it will close saturday january 10th until monday, january 12th. that's so crews can install these pieces of a movable median barrier to prevent head-on crashes. the 52-hour closure will be the longest since the bridge opened back in 1937. during the closer the bridge will only be open to golden gate transit buses, cyclists and pedestrian. we will be reporting on that. right now hearings lisa argen talking about this really brisk weather. >> hasn't even arrived yet. i'm anticipating the coldest air of the winter to arrive on tuesday. here's the clouds around. rail the headline today is the air quality, and you can see that from all of our live shots. here's a look from mt. tam.

where you e. can see the haze. it's a sunny day and we will enjoy numbers around average today. right now a happy day at 50. 45 san carlos. we had high ire dewpoints high and mid-level clouds that are there. still a mild start out there or getting milder out there. low 40s for you in fairfield. concord and livermore, 43 a piece. little fog in concord. 24 hours ago we were much colder anywhere from two to four degrees colder. we will go back in that direction come tuesday as we this falling temperatures throughout the day. take a look at the smog right there. this is, of course sutro tower camera where we have the poor air quality in the north bay today. right over the city it doesn't look good either. no woodburning aloud today due to all the concentration of the particulates close to the surface and that's due to strong high pressure as it sits overhead today and tomorrow.

we get a big wind shift tomorrow with the fog starting off the morning hours. things will get cleaned out once the strong cold front moves through on tuesday. isolates a dry one though, so don't get too excited. it will be seasonably cool today and tomorrow and then the gusty northeast winds tuesday into wednesday. so here's a look at our water vapor imagery. it is coming down from canada. this will be the coldest air we've seen all season long. the winds could gust past 40 miles an hour come tuesday night into wednesday. so notice how clear it is today, and then whether he get into a little fog tomorrow morning. and by the afternoon we are sunny again, but look at the moisture how it parallels the coast. here comes the cold air coming in on tuesday. you see it over the sierra nevada. a quick shot of snow there maybe some snow around mt. hamilton, mt. diablo. snow down to 2500 feet. it's the wind that really will reinforce the cold air and could be quite damming come tuesday

into wednesday. santa rosa wake up to temperatures below freezing new year's eve. still cold until new year's day and you won't recover until friday or saturday. but livermore, really take a nose dive into new year's eve, new year's day with overnight lows in the low 30s, and accompanying that cold air to start will be those gusty winds. the winds will wack off. we will have to get the atmosphere more modified by the end of the week until we really recover. 55 concord, 57 san mateo and san jose with 56 in morgan hill. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we are looking at sunny but hazy conditions today with the spare the air alert. seasonal temperatures tomorrow and the morning fog it will be breezy, windy and cold. wednesday, new year's eve. and new year's day we are looking at more sunshine. overnight lows tuesday and wednesday will be in the 20s and 30s. friday and saturday milder. if you are traveling over the holidays, use out abc7 news

the doctor said that knowledge is key as liberia's government prepares to reopen schools in the new year. >> it teaches the community that you shouldn't send a child to school if they have any symptoms or science of ebola. >> 60,000 people have already read the booklet. education that:save lives. in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. bay area conservationists are combining state of the art technology and old-fashioned elbow grease to help wild animals adapt to climate change. it's happening about 30 miles south of san jose in a valley between gilroy and hollister where a critical habitat is being brought back to life. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has the details. >> this howling coyote pup and this mountain lion are just a couple of the creatures facing a serious challenge as their environment warms up. all these images are from motion-activated cameras showing large mammals at the lower edges

of the mountains and the hamilton range. >> climate change is making it more important for animals to be able to move from one place to another because the habitat in their original places is changing, getting hotter and dryer. they need to move up into cooler areas and finding cover and food and water. >> the animals used to travel across this valley south of gilroy to move between mountains. but most of the trees and bushes that provided food and shelter here are gone. >> they are having a really hard time getting across. >> so now these school kids are helping to create a wooded passageway through the valley. >> trees and shrubs along the historic channel of the river. >> this is part of a team of nonprofit groups working on the restoration. the children are from bradley school. the long, curvey line. the line.

trees is a natural passageway that already exists through part of the valley. this project will fill in the gaps so animals can make it all the way across. >> this is snow berry. and this is a sycamore. it's doing great. and we've already seen birds perching on it. >> the team is putting in many native plants that will be monitored overtime so information on this project can be used on other restorations. that's where this wild-looking thing comes in. >> with this technology all you have to do is walk. >> the climate scientists is wearing the google treker as he walks the route that will be filled with plants. and the ball at the top has 15 cameras, all taking pictures at the same time to produce a 360-degree view. >> there's also a gps unit on top tracking my exact location. >> it will take several weeks to process the data. the final product will be a 360-degree view of the trail similar to this one done in marin county. they will take new images every year to track the progress of the plants. but scientists won't have to

restaurants come restaurants go. but when a 58-year-old institution closes its doors fans flock to enjoy special memories and have one more taste of a special dish. ming's restaurant closes after business today in palo alto. abc7 news reporter david louie explains why it's bittersweet for many on the peninsula. >> many of ming's employees have worked here for decades, eclipsed only by patrons who have been regulars even longer. after 58 years this palo alto institution is bowing to development.

the large 500-seat restaurant will make way for a four-story hotel. ming's will return as a 150 street restaurant inside the hotel. but that's two years from now, ending a family tradition. >> it's been something we have done pretty much every week since i've been born. it's a very family-centered tradition. >> norman said he will miss their signature chinese chicken salad. >> a dressing and a special kind of mustard with some trace of like a a wasabi taste in it and the unique taste i've never seen in the rest of bay area. >> 49 people will lose their jobs. >> some had retire after sunday. >> it's my turn. waiting for the 40 years. >> ming's has provided many immigrants with work. the head chef has been at ming's for 29 years. >> we will take a rest for a short time and when the restaurant reopens, you know, i hope many of them will come back

today. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. we haven't been tracking any rain in quite some time. as we go into the new year, it's really going to start out quite cold, and hopefully into the next weekend we could get a little precip. right now the view from mt. tam is awfully hazy with temperatures from the low 40 necessary san jose, morgan hill to the mid-50s half moon bay. sole we are 2 to 4 degrees warmer than yesterday. enjoy in today and tomorrow because the cold air is coming back. our exploratorium camera with 40 in santa rosa, 45 in novato. low 40s by the delta concord and livermore. so from our sutro tower camera you definitely can tell why the bay area people have issued a spare-the-air day. all the nothing and particulates and the high pressure. we will be looking at more sunshine tomorrow but maybe some wind will help mix things out.
