partways. this was no surprise after a season of discontent and no playoff run. but it ends with his 49th victory. harbaugh knew he was done and made sure he enjoyed the final game. the players have a lot of respect for him whether they liked him or not. it had to be an emotional day for coach. they went to three straight title games. harbaugh would not confirm he is going to michigan but if so i am surprised he didn't play out the process and see what is available to him in the nfl. if the raiders' owner mark davis who wants to meet with harbaugh offers him $10 million a year would jim take it? michigan had that advantage to talk with harbaugh without tampering as they wanted to get the deal done for recruiting purposes. he gave thanks in his final press conference. >> i thought we accomplished great things. tremendous football. so many people worked so hard to construct where this football team is.

connecting with the kids. 40-year-old herman shum was a husband and father to two. but he was also their biggest motivator. it is not what you would expect from a vice principal whose job it was to discipline the kids. >> herman was loved in the ways that deans often are not. >> they say the school community is in shock after learning about his tragic death. he was riding with a large group near livermore when he slided with an on coming truck. he made have veered to the opposite lane jay his heart was in his work. it was not just about rules. it was about using discipline to help them grow. >> he would checkup on me. he would say how are you doing? >> he is a 2014 graduate who saw shum at any will you please my my -- at an alumni

event. he is the type of person where if a person felt insecure whether it was about academics or sports or anything you would walk to his office and walk away feeling incredibly confident. >> he was just named the principal and going to start the 2015-2016 school year. now his legacy will remain at saint mary's high school where they will hold a memorial in his honor. lilian kim, abc7 news. developing news now out of indonesia where officials think a missing plane crashed and is at the about the m to of the sea. >> family members of passengers on flight 8501 are nervously waiting for information. a massive search involving planes, ships and helicopters is underway off the coast. the flight to singapore had 162 people on board.

it hit bad weather and the pilot requested a change of course and the plane drpped off the radar. the head of indonesia's search and rescue says there was no distress signal when the plane disappeared over the sea. >> it is much too soon to do anything but widely speculate. the one thing that is here last night that was not present in the malaysia disappearance was bad weather. >> the malaysian flight disappeared in march and still not found. happening in italy, the first group of survivors trapped on a burning ferry just reached land. the 49 survivors are on a cargo ship and now docked at an italian port. more than 200 passengers and crew are trapped on the burning ferry. at least one is dead and two are hurt. the ferry left a greek port and headed to italy. a touching homecoming for

a fresno mother who gave birth while in a coma is back at home. 39-year-old melissa carlton gave birth at ucsf earlier this year after she had a seizure. now, more on carlton's progress and her homecoming. >> the four and a half hour drive from the bay area is the longest trip melissa carlton has made in more than nine months. but this journey is short compared to the recovery process it took to get her home. carlton fell into a coma in march while pregnant with her

provider didn't see the progress from melissa they were hoping so they told her husband she had to go home and recover. >> it was sudden and unexpected. we were left really scrambling to find a way to get her home as safely and quickly as possible. her health fluxuates easily and the possibility of entering a rehabilitation facility is a long way down the road. >> it is a horrible and tragic nature and it is devastating. and yet when you get to hold a baby like west and play with him and kiss on him and watch him laugh and smile and it is really something else. >> the family says it is amazing support from the community. a go fund me account has surpassed $120,000.

right now police in loss altos are asking for help finding a missing woman. the 87-year-old was found around 2:30 walking a small white dog in the area of south springer road and terrace court. if you see her or have any information you you can call loss altos police or 9-1-1. a surfer is recovering after a great white shark attack on the central coast. it happened in los-osos. the juvenile shark was eight to ten feet long. it bit him on the hip and a friend saw it happen. >> come up and hit him from below and the whole body just twisted and took him under the water. he pops up and then he peddles so fast out of there. >> so scary. a doctor happened to be on the beach and immediately took a look at him. the surfer went to the hospital. he is expected to be okay.

the next couple days. the temperatures are on a downward trend. live doppler 7hd shows a quiet scene on this sunday night. we will take you live outside over looking san francisco. the bright lights of oakland are in the background. we generally have clear skies overnight, but we are going to track a little fog developing. the forecast calls for fog in the bay and the inland valley locations. we are tracking a strong brisk wind on the way. the wind will bring widespread freezing temperatures to end 2014. we do have a spare the air in affect for monday specifically in the north bay and santa clara valley. over the next 24 hours, no wood burning is allowed of the chilly in fairfield and 37 and currently 50 in oakland. 52 in downtown san francisco. 54 in half moon bay. fremont is checking in at 50 degrees. satellite and radar will show high pressure in control over us. that's where we had the clear skies, but look off to the west, this cold front will

bring about some changes. it is not necessarily in the form of precipitation. it is a dry frontal passage. behind this front cool air lingers and so do gusty winds. we will show you tomorrow morning 6:00 around the bay and in the valley notice the fog is developing. it quickly burns off and by the afternoon wall to wall sunshine across the region. and then we will track the cold front early tuesday morning. perhaps a sprits or sprinkle and some patchy clouds. behind the front midday tuesday and into the afternoon the winds will be gusty. we have a high wind watch in affect for the north bay mountains and the the east bay hills for sustained winds of the the -- winds. the potential for gusts as high as 65 miles per hour. these winds are bringing in the cold air. look at santa rosa. overnight lows wednesday thursday and into friday. we are dipping below the freezing mark. urban locations will not be immune to the cold. into wednesday, thursday and friday bottoming out in the

this is abc7 news. >> good evening. in tonight's headlines the san francisco 49ers are looking for a new head coach. jim harbaugh parted ways with the team right after a win this afternoon. a statement from the 49ers say it was a mutual decision. harbaugh would not confirm rumors where he will coach next. saint mary's college high school will hold a memorial for their vice principal. they identified herman shum as the motorcyclist who was killed. he is riding with a group of cyclists when he swerved into the path of a truck. >> leaks have been reported on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the discovery comes after these recent rains. they are working to seal holes to protect the bridge from rust. nearly -- after nearly 13 years america's combat mission in afghanistan is over. the war came to a formal end

spark violence. sony's playstation network is back on-line tonight. playstation and microsoft's xbox systems were hacked on christmas day causing a multi day outage. abc news reporter lyndsay janice has the latest. >> tens of millions of frustrated gamers are finally able to access sony's playstation network and microsoft xbox live for the first time since christmas day. sony acknowledging late saturday its internet service for popular games like destiny and grand theft auto was targeted by hackers. in a statement posted on its website, the video game giant saying services were attacked over the holidays and designed to disrupt connective tee and on-line game play. >> all of the people that got xboxs and playstations for christmas were unable to use their machines as intended. they were left with bricks under their tv's. >> cyber security say the attack by a group of attackers

a statewide ban on certain chemicals seems to have worked in cleaning up the bay. that's the conclusion of a 10-year study published today. the san francisco ease estuary found contamination in fish and birds. the local wildlife had some of the highest levels of toxic flame retardant chemicals. they banned the chemical used in electronics. the dust can wash into waste water treatment plants. >> from there it gets into the bay bought m to. bay bottoms. they are eaten by fish and birds. >> since 1994 the banned toxins have decreased 95%. a man in oakland started an environmental movement that has kept going.
