this is abc7 news. >> fierce winds are battering the bay area tonight with gusts toppling trees like this redwood in napa that sliced a home in half. >> the winds even caused headaches at levi stadium for the foster farms bowl. the gusts making it almost impossible for kickers. here is a live look from our rooftop camera where the flags are barely holding on. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama-daetz. we are in for more winds and very cold temperatures jay we begin with -- >> we begin with sandhya patel. sandhya? >> dan and ama the winds are loud out there. it is hard to miss them. when you factor in the cold conditions, it is actually very chilly outside. let's look at live doppler 7hd. the skies are clear and the

winds are still gusty. about 37 miles an hour at half moon bay and 35 at sfo. they have come down some since earlier tonight. as you take a look here, wind advisory is still running until noon tomorrow. trees and power lines could still topple and here is a live picture from our emeryville camera where you will notice the peak wind gusts over 60 miles an hour, mount de diablo and napa airport twin peeks same thing. winds close to 40 miles an hour at the airport. now we are looking at the wind damage reports still growing. in the bay area, 60. trees and power lines are going down. this is a common scene as you look at this twitter picture. willow glen this viewer said this tree went down over her house. we are expecting the winds to remain gusty and it may keep you up.

the winds actually start to drop off tomorrow afternoon. the temperatures are going to tumble. i will let you know how cold it will get. your new year's eve forecast is coming up. dan? >> thank you so much. our next stop the north bay where the wind caused all kinds of problems. downed trees and no power. it left boaters strappedded on the -- stranded on the bay. one rescue you will see on abc7 news. cornell? >> still very windy and cold out here tonight. the gusty winds brought high waves to richardson bay and it is leaving others adrift causing one woman to call may day. the u.s. course guard was working into the night on richardson bay and responding to distress calls from stranded sailors. this was one of the rescues. the coast guard towed sean keaton's sailboat after winds

broke the anchor lines sending her adrift and capsizing her dingie. >> we tried to make fast as the tarp came loose and it kept going down. >> were you drifting into the bay? >> going out the gate. >> she could not call authorities. her radio was not working. >> how did you get help? >> yelled. luckily people heard me. >> high winds brought down this 50-foot tree in mill valley forcing the closure of east blythe dale avenue. the tree took out a power line leaving 9000 residents in the dark. >> we have seen high understand winds and the gusty, windy weather that is certainly having an impact on our power lines mostly with vegetation coming into contact with them. >> as the crews clear the tree they were in search of light for their home without electricity. >> really nice flashlights and led's. and then little candles. >> the power was restored to most of mill valley.

back live where several small boats are under water tonight. two people were hospitalized today after their small boat capsized about 10 feet from where we are standing here. they were tossed into the water and treated for hypothermia. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> thank you cornell. now, right now in the north bay, 2,000 customers are without power. in san francisco a hundred customers are in the dark and 1500 on the peninsula. 5,000 in the east bay. the hardest hit area the south bay currently has 9,000 outages. in all at least 150,000 customers lost power today. >> in san leandro the winds pushed power lines so low that a railroad crossing came down on top of them. look at this. his spear yen boulevard had to be shutdown while a crew dealt with this problem. >> in martinez a power line came down on two cars setting

them on fire. the area near the campbell theater was evacuated. firefighters couldn't use water because of the live wire. eventually they used foam to put out the fires. >> the traffic came to a stop on i-80 as a tree and power lines were blown over by the wind. the entire freeway was shutdown for hours. crews were finally able to get the tree off the road and all lanes have since reopened. >> drivers on bay area bridges may see gusty winds tonight. high wind advisories were issues earlier today for the bay bridge . richmond, san rafael bridge and altamont pass. >> not even the railroads were safe. a tree fell on to the tracks, but no one was hurt. it caused delays until a crew was able to remove it. >> there were fallen branches and debris on tracks near daly city hayward and pleasant hill and castro valley. service is back to normal, but

bart says to expect some delays. >> and we want to show you this picture a viewer took showing montgomery station. they climbed on to the platform standing shoulder to shoulder as you can see. >> it was tough for commuters trying to get around the bay area from the wind and bart riders were not the only ones delayed. imagine being on a ferry trying to navigate the chopy bay and all of the wind. we go now to san francisco with the weather-related travel issues. nick? >> absolutely ama and dan. the wind has died down for now, but as sandhya told you a few minutes ago, it is only a break because there is more to come. the early afternoon on bart was a challenge. that announcement warning riders of a service interruption between the hayward and south hayward stations played repeatedly. the reason was wind and lots of it. there was debris being blown on to tracks forcing bart to stop service until the problem

the redirection of muni's j line. the national weather service has issued a high wind advisory throughout the bay area for tomorrow. nick smith abc7 news. >> nick thanks very much. this large redwood came crashing on to a home in north napa. it happened about 3:30. the house suffered heavy damage. it has been red tagged. fortunately to one was hurt. looking at sfo, the wind caused dozens of cancellations and delayed. there were more than 100 cancellations. video from earlier, imagine being on board this wobbly landing. because of the wind, the incoming flights actually came in over millbrae and u.s. highway 101 instead of their usual pattern over san francisco bay. viewers have been sending in pictures of wind damage from all over the bay area.

sonar equipment has located air asia flight 8501 at the bottom of the java sea. indonesian officials made the announcement a short time ago. debris was found in the same area several hours earlier. the plane went down on sunday. frantic relatives continue to wait for news, but all 162 people on board the plane are presumed dead tragically. officials are not sure if the jet is in one piece or whether it broke up. >> of course we are always tracking that on our website abc7news.com. well turning to our upcoming holiday, the 126 tournament of roses parade takes place on new year's day on abc7. among those watching a number of oakland residents cheering on two city officials riding a float and searching for votes to green community gardens. carolyn tyler has the story. >> it is not much to look at.

from pie row spectaculars are putting the finishing touches on the 15-minute fire work display that will ring in the new year in san francisco. if you are planning to head out, the police have a few things they would like you to keep in mind. >> we want to avoid tragedy so take public transportation hire a car service and take taxis whatever it may be but don't drink and drive. >> police will be watching for dui's and writing tickets for public drinking. if you don't have to be behind the wheel there are public transit options. bart will run until 3:00 a.m. muni and cal train will be free tomorrow night. you can see the ball drop here tomorrow night. our coverage starts with prime time rockin eve with ryan seacrest and then after the news at 11:00 more new year's eve festivities at 11:30. more now so the unusually strong winds we are seeing. take a look at this. >> this is video from san jose. it is showing a small pick up truck being pushed by the wind. look at that.

>> sandhya patel is here with how long the strong wind will last. >> we are looking for the winds to continue through tomorrow morning and then they will ease up tomorrow afternoon. that's when we will notice the changes as we look at live doppler 7hd. it is clear. the same storm that brought us the wind and is bringing us a chill and is bringing wintry weather to southern california. rain and snow is in the mountains. a winter storm warning for the los angeles county mountains. they are expecting obviously this to continue along with the gusty winds. keep that in mind if you are traveling down to southern california. here in the bay area tracking gusty winds over the hills. 40 miles an hour mount tam and 37 oakland hills. hawk eye in the north bay hills. we are looking pee potential -- potential for trees and power lines to get knocked down. it is 40 in napa. it is getting chilly. you factor in the wind the

windchill factor. take a look at how it really feels in napa. 31 degrees and it feels like 33 in fairfield. it is definitely blustery out there. we don't talk about windchill factor too often. from our exploratorium camera looking at a nice view. gusty winds into tomorrow morning. looking at freezing cold conditions. clear and chilly conditions for new year's eve. as you look at the cold front this is what ushered in the very cold air and it is bringing the wintry-like weather in southern california. the low is going to start to push out of here. the winds will begin to relax tomorrow evening is when we will notice the changes. the monterey bay is going under a freeze watch on new year's eve night and going into the morning. the temperatures are expected to drop low 20s to low 30s. if you do have frost sensitive plants protect them by bringing them inside. and don't forget the pets.

we are expecting this to be a freeze warning. tomorrow morning windy cold, clear. look at the lows as we head toward thursday and friday. this is santa rosa's temperature trend. down to freezing and below freezing on friday. and then the numbers start to recover. we will talk 40s for your low and that will seem mild. cool and breezy, numbers in the low to mid50s. if you have outdoor plans on new year's eve you know those earmuffs? the scarfs the gloves? they may come in handy. upper 30s to mid40s. a chilly start to 2015. that's when those temperatures will bottom out. perhaps the coldest of the season. as you look at the accu-weather seven-day forecast, you will be ringing in the new year on a cold night, but a dry one. we will continue with the chill on friday but the temperatures start to moderate. as we hit the weekend 60s
