♪ mattress discounters ♪ broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. a s.w.a.t. team patrols the south san francisco neighborhood looking for a suspect accused of opening fire on patrol officers early this morning, causing them to fire back. that suspect is now in custody. good evening and happy new year. >> police arrested 23-year-old i van dejesus after a seven-hour manhunt. no one was hit by the gunfire, but it came amid heightened tensions over the killings of un unarmed black men. leann? >> reporter: well, i think you're right to say that police around the nation are being very cautious. but when you have someone firing at not one, but two police

officers you can expect an army responding, and a lot of firepower. that's how he describes the person who was shooting at police. it started in the early morning hours after the new year's eve celebrations. someone firing shots in the air on first lane near orange avenue in south san francisco. that's when neighbors began calling police. >> we called it in. the cops drove by. and they kept driving by. then we heard more shots. so they called again. and they drove by again around 2:30. and the cops just waited until they found something. >> reporter: according to the police report, two officers searching on foot were then fired upon by this man, 23-year-old dejesus gomez, firing upon them. the suspect ran. a small army of officers responded including the s.w.a.t. team's reps using improvised

explosive devices. police would not say why they brought in this armored personnel carrier. neighbors were told to stay in their homes. >> we didn't go out of the house. >> my daughter couldn't go to work. and just -- i got yelled at just coming out of the alley to look to see what was going on and they told me to come back inside. >> reporter: about 10:30 this morning, police arrested gomez hiding. police spent most of the day interviewing neighbors. >> i said what happened to us my alley over here they're always so nice calm. now it seems we're seeing things that never happened before. >> reporter: the guns used to shoot at the officers has not been found. abc 7 news. in santa cruz, police are looking for vandals dressed in all black and caused destruction.

one read more dead cops. police say about 20 people went to the santa cruz county jail last night, throwing rocks, bottles and paint at county cars. they questioned three people but have so far not made any arrests arrests. 2014 was a dangerous year for law enforcement officers. an annual report by the national law enforcement officers memorial fund found that 50 officers were shot and killed on duty last year. 15 of them killed in ambushed assaults. overall the number of police officers killed on the job was up 56% from 2013. today marks the sixth anniversary of one of the bay area's most controversial officer involved shootings. >> oscar grant was shot and killed on a platform early new year's day of 2009. today his family and hundreds of others gathered to mark his death in the context of all that's happened since. >> laura anthony is live in oakland with this story.

laura? >> reporter: hi, ama. since his death oscar grant's family has dedicated themselves to trying to prevent the same thing from happening to other young black men. they continue to be at the forefront of that struggle today. >> the night he was killed, he was enjoying his life with his friends. >> reporter: she said before 200 people oscar grant's mother could hardly believe it was six years since her son was shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer. >> i know he's looking down and smiling seeing a whole sea of people getting together to celebrate him. and to celebrate life. >> reporter: grant's killer, former b.a.r.t. officer messerly, was tried and convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison minus time served. since then other unarmed black men have been killed by police officers without a similar outcome.

it's something grant's uncle says he cannot ignore. >> many young black and brown men are being killed at an unprecedented rate across the united states. so it's really a heart-aching feeling to have to experience and relive it on a consistent basis. >> reporter: this event was a vigil, without a demonstration or march. grant's family appreciates those efforts across the country, but hope a long-term solution could come in a different form. >> it will require each one of us to examine ourselves, and as we good ourselves, to begin to put forth love realizing that we're all created equal. >> reporter: besides his parents and extended family, grant left behind a daughter who is now 10 years old. in oakland laura anthony, abc 7 news. police in san jose are investigating a double shooting outside a nightclub on east capital expressway.

officers arrived at rain lounge just before 12:30 this morning. they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. they're being treated for their injuries at a local area hospital. several people have been detained for questioning. investigators are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact san jose police. oakland police have arrested a 20-year-old livermore man on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and dui after a crash killed a female passenger who was in his car. this happened around 3:30 a.m. chp officers say travis was driving east bound on 580 when he hit a pole near high street and macarthur boulevard blocking that on-ramp. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. travis was booked into jail on several charges. hospitals are told to look out for the driver of this truck that slammed into the side of a house in glen allen. the person behind the wheel left the scene before they arrived around 2:00 this morning. there was no one inside the

house either. authorities say the truck took out a power line and caused a water and gas leak. because of broken pipes. investigators searching for the cause of a two-alarm fire broke out in this apartment building on third street north of st. james park around 1:15 p.m. firefighters were able to knock it down in about half an hour. they say the fire started in the basement but fortunately nobody was hurt. lots of layers, that was the key to staying warm in pasadena this morning. it caused near freezing temperatures. the cold weather didn't keep overnight campers away even with temperatures between 29 and 32 degrees. yes. people lit fires to stay warm. firefighters made sure everyone was staying safe and warm, especially the little ones. >> we have three layers on them. stockings, leggings, two pairs of socks. >> this was considered one of the coldest rose bowl parades on

we can expect another cold night tonight. a freeze warning from midnight to 9:00 a.m. to the north bay, with the exception for the coast, for the second consecutive night. this includes the car ken as strait and delta. mid-20s to low 30s. it will cause stress on outdoor pets. early morning lows will be in the low to mid-30s in these areas, and frost damage to sensitive plants is a possibility. bear that in mind. as you may have noticed we've had a dry weather pattern since last week. the last rain was on christmas eve. we have a dry pattern coming up for next week as well. rain late next week and i'll give you a look at that in a few minutes. speaking of the hint of rain, we still need it. >> we are starting this new year

with optimism after a wetter year in 2013. matt keller shows us what a difference a year can make. >> good-bye 2014. you west outnt out with a bang. >> san francisco and san jose both a little bit above average. but the key to that was most of it came in that 17 to 18-day window just last month. otherwise, most of the year was very dry. >> reporter: 2013 was the driest year on record in the bay area. this is lexington reservoir on january 21st, 2014. this is the reservoir today. you can see a big difference. >> the ten reservoirs in the santa clara valley water district are above capacity right now. encouraging sign heading into the winter season. >> reporter: the water district said customers cut back usage by 13% from february to november.

that's a lot better than the rest of the state. but the goal is 20%. a water conservation rebate program for converting lawns to low water use landscapes was doubled and extended through june. residents we spoke with said the recent rain does not mean they'll relax. >> still showering quickly. we don't keep the water on. we wash our dishes lather them up and wash them. still conserving and try to be as thoughtful as possible when it comes to our water use. >> reporter: water officials say above-average rainfall could get us back to normal in about a year. the conservation efforts could get us there quicker. matt keller, abc 7 news. 2015 started with a couple of earthquakes in northern california. a magnitude 5.1 quake struck off the coast about 70 miles west of ferndale early this morning. police say there was light shaking in the area but no damage. it was centered about 250 miles northwest of the earthquake that

hit napa. a second quake struck this afternoon near kenwood in sonoma county. the usgs said the 3.2 quake hit at 1:18 p.m. it was centered four miles southwest of kenwood and five miles east-northeast of roanoke park. no damage or injuries there. the bay area gets a new area code next month. 628. it's going to change the way hundreds of thousands of people have to dial. also, jim harbaugh, gone off to michigan. another coach with a big personality is appearing on the niners' radar. a candidate for the dumbest criminals in 2014. new at 4:30 he left a very unusual paper trail. a live look at the afternoon traffic. >> wow. >> it looked like this in downtown san francisco. this is fantastic if you're driving right now. trying to get to the east bay, right side to the peninsula.

well it is the area code that is known around the world. since 1947 people have been dialing 415 to reach san francisco and the greater bay area. starting next month, the 415 is going to get some company. get ready for the 628. this will also require a new calling procedure for most. abc 7 news reporter carolyn

tyler joining us in san francisco with the details. carolyn, i'm not sure i'm ready for 628. >> reporter: 628 won't come along until march. but what's going to happen right away, or starting next month is the change in 415. 415 is one of california's original three area codes. so it's had quite a workout, quite a demand with more and more people getting cell phones. so now the cpuc has ordered what's called an overlay. when in doubt, dial it out. have you seen this public service announcement? if you're calling anyone in san francisco or marin, starting february 21st you'll have to add 1, and the area code to complete the call. you'll have to reprogram things like security systems and fax machines. it's one of the changes the california puc ordered last year, because 415 is running out. an even bigger change is anyone

assaults on someone who can't consent will receive prison time. the yes law eliminates any possibility of silence being consent. undocumented immigrants can apply for driver's licenses. driver's licenses offices are closed today but will begin to get the new applications tomorrow. the niners are looking at another coach with a very big personality. they will interview rex ryan on sunday replacing jim harbaugh, who left this week for michigan. ryan is known as one of the top defensive minds in the game. but also known for his rather colorful behavior. rex will always speak his mind often without a filter. once made an obscene gesture at a sporting event. and you probably remember the foot fetish videos with rex and his wife.

officers following a seven-hour man hunt. somebody shot at them around 3:00 a.m. prompting officers to shoot back. the suspect then took off. police brought in the s.w.a.t. team and eventually found their suspect hiding in the area. they arrested gomez for attempted murder. neither gomez nor the officers were hurt. a live look from the east bay hills camera. kind of hazy out there this afternoon. expected to be even more so tomorrow. as abc 7 news meteorologist mike tweeted earlier a spare the air alert is issued for friday. no wood burning in your fireplace no matter how cold it gets. now to the latest in the crash of airasia flight 8501. the first body of a passenger has been positively identified. the crews race against time and bad weather to search for dozens more bodies and black boxes. lana zach has the latest. >> reporter: amid rose petals and mud, the first funeral was held for the first passenger of

flight 8501. she was laid to rest by her extended family in indonesia. her husband mother-in-law and child are still missing in the java sea. this relative says they are praying that they will be found soon. rescue workers are anxious to continue their search but have been hampered by bad weather. a double challenge. it both increases the risk to search teams and interferes with their ability to listen to the beacons from the black boxes. >> you need real calm, or silent water to do that. otherwise you will interfere with the other signal or other noise. >> reporter: teams have been able to pull more wreckage from the sea. but the number of bodies recovered is just nine of the 162 onboard the ill-fated flight. ships have joined the search

effort. they're trying to recover more bodies and wreckage. abc news new york. greece and italy are issuing widely different figures for how the passengers and crew are unaccounted in the ferry fire that killed at least 11 people. an italian prosecutor has said up to 98 are unaccounted for. while greece puts that number at 18. and says italy's list is full of duplications and misspellings. not sure how many were aboard the ferry sunday. italy's coast guard said 477 people were rescued. authorities want to inspect the ferry to see if it contains any more victims. police are dismissing reports that a scramble for fake money was the cause of a new year's eve tragedy in shanghai china. 36 people were killed nearly 50 injured in the deadly stampede. it happened along the famous river front. some of the victims suffocated

pennsylvania police followed a paper trail to catch a suspected felon. a toilet paper trail that is. officers say eric fray entered a pizza shop and handed an employee two pieces of toilet paper reading, i have a gun on me, give me $300. fray said there was a man outside pointing a gun at him and if he didn't walk out with the money, the man would shoot him.

the employee hit the secret alarm under the counter. police arrived and fray told them he was relieved that they saved him. they didn't buy it. so they checked his apartment. >> he actually wrote on the roll, he didn't tear it off. it was kind of encrypted onto the toilet paper roll. which matched up perfectly. >> fray is not only facing a theft and robbery felony charge, officers found three ounces of marijuana in his home, possession with intent to deliver felony charge. >> seemed like a good idea at the time. >> yeah. not so much. >> bad criminals. not intelligent criminals. i had no segway that worked there, christian. >> that's just fine. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. clear skies across the bay area. a little bit of haze is building out, maybe even haze for tomorrow. tomorrow is a spare the air day.

another possible data breach to warn you about involving credit and debit cards at chick-fil-a. they learned there were unusual activity involving payment cards at a few of their restaurants. the chain did not release any other tails. chick-fil-a said it's working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to investigate this activity. the fast food chain said if investigators determine there was a breach, customers will not be responsible for fraudulent charges that have been made to their accounts. it's about to get easier to see the controversial film "the interview." sony pictures said it's reached deals with several major cable

see the price for gas at this station is less than $3 a gallon. but with the new regulations you can expect to pay a little more at the pump in the next few days. it seemed like a well-timed gift for the holidays. lower prices made for happy customers. but that gift could soon be taken away. >> you hope it doesn't go too high. because you can't afford to travel. >> reporter: edgar of calistoga may have reason to worry. starting today fuel suppliers, the people between the refineries and gas stations, will come under the state's cap-and-trade program, supplying more carbon fuels or greenhouse gases created when the fuel is burned. the question now, with the cost of the carbon allowances passed on to drivers. >> if that is a straight pass-through from what we can tell, it's likely to translate to more than 10 cents a gallon. >> reporter: officials with the air resources board insists the
