live from the kgo broadcast center this, is abc 7 news. >> it was for 12 hours they were sitting on the plane, before they took off for their 16-hour flight. >> dozens of passengers finally on the ground at sfo, after being stuck on a plane for nearly 28 hours. and it began with a freak fog accident that shut down an airport in abdhabi. >> we go to san francisco international airport where we caught up with some of the passengers after their very long flight. >> reporter: anyone who has ever flown out of sfo, knows about fog delays. but in abdhabi, they have sandstorms and not fog. this freak fog incident shut down the airport there for

hours. and that's one of the reasons why the flight just arriving now, had passengers aboard it for 28 hours. for passengers aboard the flight 183, frustration has been brewing for hours. >> they kept telling us we were going to leave, you know, 15 minutes from now. 20 minutes from now. 30 minutes from now. for 12 hours. >> because of the bad weather. and the gates -- all of the flights were grounded or canceled. they didn't have enough space in the airport to accommodate us. >> this is a picture of the fog in abdhabi that kept their flight and others grounded for so long. the planeload of kids seniors and hundreds of other passengers had to make the 16-hour flight here to san francisco, far grand total of 28 hours on the same plane. >> everybody was fighting with each other. and the flight attendants were fighting with us. and we were fighting with flight attendants. >> reporter: then, passengers did come down in flight. for his parents, it was a

nerve-racking wait. all he could do was spend a text from another passenger's phone. >> there was a website. but no updated information on the website. you call a number and it puts you in a loop. >> among the last to leave the flight, 77-year-old lela. her daughter is furious at the airline. >> to have them waiting especially seniors they have to pull them. >> the airline has apologized for the delay. they say the fog caused them to cancel 20 flight in abdhabi. one couple said they're happy the flight wasn't cancelled. >> we had one other flight canceled. >> reporter: her boyfriend just proposed on this trip. she had reason to be happy. >> at least that's something. the u.s. department of transportation prohibits lengthy tarmac delays. the maximum allowed for international flights is four hours. and carriers must make sure

passengers are provided adequate food and water. but the rules only apply to u.s. airports and do not apply to foreign carriers overseas. a police shooting in vallejo vallejo. the incident started near redwood street and sonoma boulevard. you can see that several bullet holes in the car. police reportedly shot at a suspect after he tried to run down officers. muni service is back to normal in san francisco, after someone drove their car into one of the train tunnels. the car was stuck in the middle of the sunset tunnel, just before 7:30 tonight. all service on the "n" line stopped for an hour and a half between karl and hillway street. for a third day in a row, a winter spare the air alert has been issued. you can see why. the haze across the bay area today. no one is allowed to burn wood, manufacture fire logs or any other solid fuel, throughout the bay area tomorrow.

violators will have to take a class or pay a fine. another cold night ahead around san francisco's union square. today, we found most people bundled up in coats hats gloves and scarves just trying to stay warm. and a live look outside. a view from our exploritorium camera. >> the temperatures running below normal. five to seven degrees below our average. a lot of sunshine. but cool air dominated the bay area. highs in the mid to upper 50s. fremont had a high of 60 degrees. current temperatures, on the cool side. a lot of 30s on the board. we're not going to be as cold as it were previous nights. i am tracking much warmer air on the way. i'll let you know when that arrives in a few minutes. >> thank you.

crews are scrambling to finish eight classrooms that were destroyed by flooding over winter break. a pipe burst on december 23rd. water up to three feet deep did millions of dollars in damage. some of the furniture was salvageable. but the cement floor and parts of the walls have to be replaced. classes will be moved to another building while repairs are under way. >> they came in on the 23rd and worked this last week and all of this week to get classrooms in other locations to start school on monday morning. >> no word on what caused the pipe to burst. neighbors reported hearing an explosion. but the school district says nothing appears suspicious. firefighters say a dried out christmas tree caught on fire and destroyed a home in antioch in afternoon. it started just before noon on san jose drive, near mission elementary school. a 15-year-old and a child escaped without injuries. firefighters say the fires are

common. so, if you have a dried out tree in your home, this is a reminder, get it out now. they're known as flying lanterns or fire balloons. paper lanterns propelled by a small flame floating in the light sky. maybe you've seen that. they're illegal in san francisco. but that didn't stop hundreds from lighting them at crissy field. the significance and the push towards regulation. >> reporter: in an instant the darkness was remrised by light. hundreds of sky lanterns were launched by families missing their loved ones. >> i think it's a nice way to dedicate some memories to her. >> reporter: sky lanterns are typically used in celebration. no one know where's the lanterns will eventually land. and that's exactly what worries

offices made the unusual move of opening on a saturday today. the agency is trying to accommodate an influx of undocumented immigrants applying for a driver's license under a new state law. the scene was calmer than yesterday, when thousands of people waited in line for hours. the dmv says the law will keep everyone safe by making sure all drivers are licensed to be behind the wheel and they have insurance. >> i'm so happy because i got -- i can drive now. it's safe. i can do a lot of things. i can take my kids to school with no problem. i can have my everything. i'm so happy. >> the dmv says more than 17,000 applied for a driver's license yesterday, which was the first day they were able to do so. the latest march against police brutality was very different from the demonstrations we've seen recently. parents took to the streets

ws controversy rocking britain's royal family. royal officials are denying that prince andrew engaged in inappropriate relations with an underaged girl. in papers filed in florida a woman says she was forced to have sex with prince andrew when she was 17 years old. the alleged encounters took place around 1999 and 2002. the allegations are part of a lawsuit against multimillionaire financier, jeffrey epstein. a celebration of robin williams' life through art.

a plane crash killed her entire family. investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong as the plane plummeted into the kentucky woods. gloria riviera has the story. >> reporter: it started with a knock at larry wilkins' front door. >> opened the door. and a little girl, 7 years old. bloody. she told me her parents were dead. she had been in a plane crash. >> reporter: the 7-year-old, the sole survive of a crash that killed her entire family p. >> she was involved in a plane crash. >> reporter: the faa confirms that late friday evening air traffic control, just outside memphis, lost contact with a plane traveling from key west to illinois. the pilot had sent a distress call saying the engine had failed. the piper seneca crashed into a remote wooded area, in kentucky. >> losing an engine in a heavily-loaded airplane, that's tough situation for any pilot.

a new cancer study has found the primary cause of the disease is bad luck. researchers from johns hop skins university studied 31 types of cancer. nine for linked to genetic traits or lifestyle. the remaining 22 were bad luck. most were mistaken cell division, which is out of your control. researchers say doctors should emphasize early detection rather than just prevention. 3,000 people are paroled from california prisons each month. nearly two-thirds will end up returning to prison. a unique program at one of the state's most infamous prisons is hoping to break that cycle. and it was the inmates' idea. we have the story. >> reporter: inside san quentin. this prison video shows just how isolated life can be behind bar paps cross the prison yard there is hope for what lies beyond the prison walls. in this class, inmates are

learning to understand the social reasons for their incarcerations. most of these men are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole. >> this program is one of the only places to where guys of every different nationality and ethnicity, religion, can come together and hold conversations that revolve around race and gender and class. and within a prison, this is unheard of. >> is it equal, though. is it fair? >> this is alliance for change. a nonprofit started in 2008, for men at some quentin. they were frustrated that people were leaving prison without the resources or understanding they need to succeed on the outside. >> the views of what is a fair outcome or distribution of resources. >> reporter: to illustrate, they use cookies. >> there's only 11 here? >> reporter: 11 cookies for 14 inmates. >> does anybody have any idea how we should be able to give these out?

growing up, being accountable. >> it's become a successful program. >> reporter: she helps the organization from the outside. she says 150 inmates have been through the alliance for change's program. >> it's become a program that's inside and outside of the prison now. at the time we started, fun of eded eded none of our members had parole. now, we have 19 folks in the community, who are continuing this work. >> reporter: prison officials say that is a true testament of the program us's success. >> you have to develop beyond the perceptions that the public may have beyond the walls. these are guys that are preparing themselves for a better world. >> reporter: a future these inmates hope will soon lead to a life beyond the prison yard. >> how is this for success? not one of the inmates who has been paroled after taking part
