>> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday january 4th. let's start with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> you can see green on the screen but it's not green in the north bay. we have mid-level and high level clouds that are helping keep a minimum temperatures up about five degrees in the peninsula and south bay. but it's cold. certainly in the north bay, napa, santa rosa, 45 degrees. 42 fremont. 39 half moon bay. mid-30s and fog out toward the

was shot to death in his patrol car two weeks ago, along with officer rafael ramos, who was laid to rest last weekend. new york governor andrew cuomo was at the wake, even as he deals with the death of his father, former governor mario cuomo. >> there was a hole in my heart that i fear will be there forever, but today is about the liu family and he would have wanted me here. >> meanwhile a memorial for officer liu is growing in new york chinatown as the community prepares for this morning's funeral. >> dozens of passengers are finally on the ground at sfo after being stuck on a plane for nearly 28 hours. it all began with a fog incident that shut down an airport in abu dhabi. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana caught up with some of the passengers after their very long flight.

>> reporter: for the passengers frustration was brewing for hours. >> they said we would leave 15 minutes from now, 20 minutes from now, 30 minutes from now for twelve hours. >> because of the bad weather at the gate, it was like all the flights were cancelled and they didn't have space to accommodate us and take us out. >> there was fog in abu dhabi that kept them grounded for so long. hundreds had to make the 16 hour flight to san francisco for a grand total of 28 hours on the the same plane. >> everybody was fighting with >> everybody was fighting with each other and the flight attendants were fighting with us and we were fighting with the flight attendants. >> passengers did calm down in flight. for his parents it was a nerve-racking wait. all he could do is send his dad a text from another passenger's phone. >> there was a website but there was no information on the website. you called the number, it just put you in a loop. >> among the last to leave the flight, 77-year-old lela.

her daughter is furious at the airline. >> to have them waiting, especially if they are seniors traveling, they have to pull them. >> the airways have apologized for the day. they said the fog caused them to cancel 20 flights in abu dhabi. one couple said they were glad it wasn't cancelled. >> we already had one flight cancelled so that was nightmare. >> her boyfriend proposed on the trip so she was happy. >> the u.s. department of transportation prohibits lengthy tarmac delays. the maximum aloud for international flights is 4 hours and carriers must make sure carriers provide adequate rules -- food and water. however, the rules only apply to u.s. airports not to foreign carriers overseas. >> this morning police are investigating a police shooting in vallejo.

it started last night by redwood street and sonoma boulevard. it end the a restaurant about a block away. police reportedly shot at the suspect after he tried to run down officers. this morning muni service is back to normal in san francisco after someone drove their car into one of the train tunnels. the car struck in the middle of the sunset tunnel just before 7:30 last night.

>> authorities are struggling to relocate 8 classrooms destroyed by flooding over the holiday break. a pipe broke back on december 23rd. >> water up to three feet deep caused millions of dollars in damage. some of the furnish was salvageable but the cement floors and parts of a wall do have to be replaced. classes will be moved to another building while repairs are underway. and other great maintenance operation. they came in on the 23rd of december and worked all this week and all of next week to get classrooms in other buildings." firefighters said a dried-out christmas key caught on fire destroying a home in antioch yesterday afternoon. started just before noon. a 15 year old and a child escape without injuries.

waited in line for hours. the dmr said the law will keep everyone save by making sure all drivers are licensed to get behind the wheel and have auto insurance. >> i'm so happy because i can drive now safe. i can -- i can do a lot of things. i can take my kids to school with no problem. i can take my kids to school. the m of dmv said statewide more than 17,000 people applied for a driver's license on friday. that was the first day they were able to do so under the new law. >> happening today a march calling tore police brutality. the purpose is to have disengaged young people from marginalized neighborhoods participate in collective action that will lead in better communications between the community and the police.

today's symposium gets underway at noon at city college in san francisco. the latest racial discrimination protest in oakland was very different from what we have seen recently. yesterday parents took to the streets hand-in-hand with their children. the group cawed the colorful mamma's of the 99% organized the march with their kids through the oakland's lakeshore district. parents said they want to teach their children a lesson about the importance of tolerance and acceptance. >> there are a lot of things happening in the world, and to be able to share that with him to talk to him about what it means, what it means to be fair what justice means is really important to me. >> i want my girls to learn about what is going on in society and know how they can defend themselves and defend the community when they are older. >> yesterday's small demonstration was nonviolent. there was no police presence. >> well, we have just started the new year and already three days of spare the air days. >> yes, that's right.

>> the search is on this morning in southern california for a newborn baby who vanished from a residence where three people were shot. police say three week old eliza del cruz disappeared. it was from a hope in long beach. three people inside were found with gunshot wounds last night. one victim the child's mother, the other two men. the three were taken to the hospital in critical, but stable condition. police believe a man may have taken the baby. this morning controversy is rocking britain's royal family. royal officials are denying prince andrew engaged in inappropriate relations with an underage girl.

with papers filed in florida, a woman said she was forced to have sex with prince andrew when she was just 17 years old. the alleged encounter took place around 1999 to 2002. the allegations are part of a lawsuit against multi-millionaire financeer jeffrey epsten. a celebration of robin williams life was held last night in san francisco. a tribute to robin. the organizer purchased ads in craig's list in nearly 350 cities asking artists to send him their memories of the late comedian how he made them feel.

the response was overwhelming. it was a variety show with life performances, as well. >> a celebration of his life and power and passion through art and music and pretty much all the things fun and joy he brought to people. >> a large portion of the proceeds will go to oakland's children's hospital. drivers will be paying more to fill up at the gas station. california's new cap and trade law has hiked the price by an average of ten cents across the state. the law involves oil companies to buy credits to offset carbon emissions for vehicles. it's the first one at weeks at the chevron station in newark. drivers are paying between $2.69 and $2.89. >> it's not going to stop me. i will pay more because i have to. not really. it's a necessity. a piece of machinery, and i need to get places, i have to buy it. >> right now, according to triple a, the nationwide average is $2.21 a gallon. california's state average is $2.65, with san francisco coming in around $2.81.

there's a warning this morning from the fda about a class of skin creams that contain high levels of mercury. will they have been ordered off of the shelves, we found them readily available. abc7 news anchor ama daetz has the details. >> popular skin creams are designed to do everything from softening skin to fading sun damage. but there's a certain class of creams that advertise the ability to whiten or lighten skin color. >> they are predominantly used in populations of asain-americans or in patients with latin-american descent and middle eastern decent. >> a dermatologist with pacific medical center in san francisco said the creams were named like "diana" and bleach creams have been found to contain high amounts of mercury. >> mercury can cause neurological problems, kidney problems. in one study of aggies with alameda county researchers found elevated levels of mercury in their systems, as high as 100

times normal. earlier this year the fda stepped in, issuing a warning about the mercury damage and specific skin-whitening creams and order them off the levels. the doctor said the creams are often manufactured overseas with little oversight. when we searched for them by name on the internet, we found several still listed for sale on various websites. >> lot of patients will bring them back from other countries and then you have absolutely no control of how these are brought into america. >> the fda said retailers could face prosecution for deliberately importing the creams, but they admit the internet sales sites are harder to track. they said avoid products that mention mercury or mercury chloride important label and avoid any product that does not provide a full list of ingredients. ama daetz, abc7 news. >> the food and drug administration can tell you how to spot the suspicious lightening creams. we have a link at abc7.com.

a new cancer study said the primary cause of the disease is bad luck. researchers studied 31 types of cancer. researchers from johns hopkins university. only nine were linked to genetic traits or lifestyle. the remaining 22 were basically bad luck. most of it is due to cell division, which you cannot control. researchers say doctors should s emphasize early detection rather than just prevention. >> turning to the weather now. lisa argen is here. happy new year to you. >> i wish i could bring better news in terms of a big storm or something. but we are looking out in the horizon the next seven to ten days seeing if we can bring in any significant precipitation. luke at live doppler 7hd it looks like there's something going on in the north but really this is a little mist and mainly higher level moisture that's not reaching the ground. but due to the low level

moisture the cloud cover temperatures are up. we could see a little freezing fog this morning with some of the moisture. also over the bridges, the overpasses and the temperatures, although they are up, they are still quite chilly out there. sfo this morning where numbers of ranging from the mid-30s, 34 morgan hill, to the mid-40s in san francisco. 37 in oakland. 38 san jose. in some areas up as much as 5 trees. others just a few degrees. we are still looking at some pretty cold weather to start out your sunday morning. the exploratorium camera, 34 santa rosa fog in concord at 35. we have 33 by the delta. so certainly the chilly conditions and the slick roadways if you are out and about this morning. 2 to 5 degrees of warming from the delta. napa livermore and san jose. this trend continues throughout the next several mornings as the moisture and the wind direction allow for numbers to come up. minimum overnight lows and afternoon highs, but we have a

spare-the-air day that will also come into play. a few temperatures hovering right around freezing this morning. overall slightly milder. morning fog, afternoon sun with numbers coming into the above average range for tomorrow, tuesday, wednesday. it looks like thursday will be our only chance of shower activity as the cloud cover moves our way. also something else happening. we will show you that as we get to that animation. but poor air quality north bay coast, central bay and the santa clara valley today. this is the third consecutive day. so you will notice the hazy conditions. this morning it's the cloud cover. you see some of the moisture well to the north. but we are looking at the overnight lows allowing for a blanket of thin and mid-level high to allow for a slightly milder reading. so in the afternoon we will get sunshine. here's what i want today show you. so this is a system we were watching. it gets closer to the coast, but look what happens. by thursday and friday it shears

>> it all started with a knock at larry's front door. >> opened the door and there's a little girl about seven years old, bloody, and she told me that her parents were dead and she had been in a plane crash. >> the disoriented seven-year-old, the sole survivor of a crash that killed her entire family. >> a seven-year-old came alone scratched up, and said she was involved in a plane crash. >> the faa confirmed that late friday evening air-traffic control just outside of memphis lost contact with a plane traveling from key west to illinois. the pilot sent a distress call reporting one of the plane's engines had failed. minutes later the piper crashed into a remote wooded area in kentucky. near paducah. >> losing an engine in a heavily loaded airplane, that's a very very tough situation for any pilot. >> the little girl somehow survived treking barefoot through the wet terrain alone. >> this is what we call a fight or flight response with adrenaline, the stress hormone.

brook was honored october, 2009 with the congressional gold medal. president obama said brook led a life of extraordinary service and issued a statement reading in part, "ed brooks stood at the for front for the battle of civil rights and economic fairness." brooks was 95 years old. after winning re-election in a landslide, governor jerry brown is set to begin his fourth and final term in office. brown will take the oath of office and deliver the inaugural address tomorrow morning at the state capitol in sacramento. in his final term, brown is expected to promote a legacy of fiscal stability and a bullet train to accommodate future generations of californians seeking clean transportation. tomorrow's ceremony gets underway at 10:00. also mayor election rubly shaft, will attend services today at church.

sfo. 47 oakland, 35 morgan hill. half moon bay, good morning, 41 degrees. we are looking from our exploratorium camera where we do have a few clouds around and notice that the numbers of hovering just above freeze big the delta. 35 in concord. you have fog. 34 santa rosa and napa. 36 livermore. so some areas just a couple degrees above yesterday's readings, but you will notice napa livermore and san jose, five degrees warmer. so in the next couple of days, we will continue to have the overnight minimums increase, and the afternoon highs going above average. so some isolated freezing valley temperatures this morning, some fog. morning fog, afternoon sun this week with steadily-rising readings. in fact, we are talking much warmer. anywhere 4 to 6 degrees warmer as we go through the beginning to the middle of the upcoming work week. a slight chance of showers was in the forecast for thursday. i really think i'm going to take that out. it's not looking very likely. the north bay could see some mist and drizzle.

emeryville right now, noticing that with the cloud cover you can't tell, but by the afternoon the air quality once again, the central bay, the coast, the north bay, and this time the santa clara valley looking poor. medium air quality inland east bay, that means no woodburning through sunday. this is the third day. started on friday. we had a spare the air yesterday. and today the subtle changes electric a weak system to the north allowing for the cloud cover. but still high pressure in control. it will build in in the next several days. that will bring sunnier conditions tomorrow, into tuesday. here's a look at oakland today. 59 degrees. 65 tomorrow afternoon. warmest day should be tuesday at 68. then dropping as that weak system increases the clouds and brings slightly cooler air. today, though, how about 53 in the northern sierra? so we are certainly mild in the afternoon, compared to last week where we had the gusty winds and the cold, cold temperatures.
