latest as soon as we get it right here on abc7 news and follow us on twitter for breaking updates at abc7 bay area. good evening. i'm katie marzullo. other news now. in five days san francisco and the north bay will be mostly cut off from one another. the golden gate bridge will be shut down for 52 hour and could have a severe impact, and not just on drivers. lilian has more. reporter: these are the zipper trucks that will be used next weekend to install the moveable median barrier. they arrived this weekend ask there's permanent fix tours at the golden gate bridge to be used a few times a day to change lanes as needed. the new barrier will be made of concrete and will replace the plastic tubular pylons currently used to separate the northbound and southbound lanes. workers need a couple days for the installs so the span will be closed to vehicles from 12:01 a.m. saturday to 4:00 a.m.

monday. cyclists pedestrians and golden gate transit buses will be allowed. merchants in sausolito which rely heavily on tourists from san francisco are prepared to see a big drop in business next weekend, but some are keeping their fingers crossed that tourists will make it over via other modes of transportation. >> our business mostly rely on the weekend, but the -- since we closed and we knock do anything. >> we're worry bet that but they do have the option of ferries. walk, bike. and bus, yes. so hopefully they'll still come. >> the golden gate bridge district understands the inconvenience and economic impact the bridge closure will have, which is why they chose next weekend to shut down the span. they say january is traditionally the solos time -- the slowest time of the year. >> while the golden gate bridge will be closed to drivers next

weekend, golden gate transit bus service will still be allowed to cross the bridge, and pedestrians and bicyclists can use the sidewalk. there will also be expanded ferry service. new can find additional information below the closure on our web site, abc7news.com. new video tonight of a hit-and-run collision on new year's day that left a man with several broken bones, including fractured vert brief. it happened in the crosswalk at fraught vile and east 18th in oakland. we have surveillance video from a nearby market. you see the man walking across the street when a car comes up quickly and hits him. we're not going to show you the actual impact about theow shows the man being thrown into the air, hitting the back of a parked card and landing next to the curb. the driver barely slows down. >> it's kind of dangerous, this crossing is dangerous. when it gets dark, people are not looking out for other pedestrians walking across.

>> oakland police want anyone with information on the hit-and-run to call them. tomorrow libby schaaf will be sworn mass mayor of oakland, cornell bernard spoke with the mayor-elect who says she ready to get to work. >> born and raised right here in oakland and tomorrow shell begin leading her home town into the future, very big job. she says there's no time to lose. >> when i set my mind on a goal for oakland i am very serious about it. reporter: libby schaaf has a plan job one as new mayor reducing rising crime rate in oakland. she want more cops on the street. >> we have to give our police the modern tools to be effective. for me that starts with commune-based policing. reporter: that means officers forming relationships with people in communities to prevent violence and crime before it

happens. >> we'd like to see your neighborhood be safer. >> i'd like to see it be safer, yes. >> franco says robberies in his neighborhood off piedmont avenue seem to be on the surprise want it to stop. >> recent incident, people running through my backyard or fixing bullet holes on my roof. it's the usual. >> will by schaaf supports recent marches in oakland to protest the killings of unarmed black men but not vandalism and looting. >> breaking windows and vandalizing small businesses in oakland is not part of that political protest. reporter: she says another priority repairing oakland's rough roads. a lot of this asphalt has truly seen better days. schaaf also wants to keep rents and housing prices semi affordable. locals have a wish list, too. >> more jobs for the community. people had jobs, less likely to commit crime. >> i have two kids so i 'want the schools to get better and

make more improvement. reporter: she says she is listening and ready to work. >> i believe that oakland is ready to have the future it deserves. reporter: in oakland cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> we want to get week in breaking news, the officer-involved shooting in mission district. we have sergio quintana live on the scene. >> this is a shooting that happened at 5:15 or so. you can see right now that there is quite a few police officers standing right outside of the mission district police department, right down the street therefor, i'm standing on valencia street. there's a series of crime scene tape block off this entire section. so there's -- valencia street between 18th and 17th is shut down. what we understand is this is a shooting that happened right outside of the elbow room, which you really can't see because of all the tree cover but it's across the street from the

police department. one witness said there was someone transported to the hospital. we do not have any details on those injuries. this may have been an officer-involved shooting. we are still trying to get more details on that. for now what people should know is this street, this entire area is shut down. right now people are having to make a u-turn on 18th street and on 17th street and the same here on valencia. as soon as we get further details we'll mass those along. reporting live in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> a man who brought a lot of charisma to tv sports for two decades has lost a long battle with cancer. stuart scott died today at age 49. you may have seen him on espn sports center and coverage of the nfl and nba. he was known for his eye energy and infectious personality. flat irons honored scott by writing, cool is the other side

of the pillow, on the sidewalk board. one of scott's most popular catch phrases. scott worked at espn with larry beil from 1995 to 2001, and their families were close. the two were in this classic sports center promo together about anchors dealing with injuries. today larry tweeted out a link to espn's video remembrance of scott. larry says, wonderful tribute to stuart scott. a pioneer. true original. and never afraid to be him. a water-main break created a big mess in a san bruno neighborhood. it happened just after midnight. gushing water covered streets and sidewalks with a muddy mess. only one home lost water. the main that broke is underneath a stairway to that house. one neighbor says it was an unwelcome start to the day. >> got up to pick up the paper early, and this is what i woke up to. mud in the streets and the sound

into spas to gather data on earth. the spoil moisture active passive satellite is a sophisticated device that can track soil moisture. it features a 20-foot mesh antenna that rotates in the atmosphere pulling in data from the earth every two days. scientist believe it will help farmers assess the moisture in their soil making it easier to predict how their landing changing and help plan a recovery from drought. coming up next at 6:00, a rare weather occurrence near the sierra. and here in the bay area, expect pike spike in temperatures this week. meteorologist drew tuma this the forecast. >> ward ward sunday two great matchups. colts over cincinnati and dallas advances to the second round we have both games and reactions coming up in sports.

this weekend one of the highest mountaintops in california had a rare weather occurrence. white mountain summit the 14,000-foot peek near the syria reached 41 degrees yesterday and that was higher than the temperatures in cities like reno, love lock and fallon. for a look at our weather here

in the bay area, let's go to meteorologist drew tuma and live doppler 7hd. >> we're talking about the potential for record-shattering temperatures, specifically on wednesday as warm air moves in. live doppler 7hd right now we are dry in terms of precipitation but we do have a hugh high clouds up above. this outlook from the east bay hills camera notice a little haze that prompted the "spare the air" in effect today and the high clouds continue to stream in and out of the bay area over the next couple of hours0. call it partly cloudy in the early evening hours. downtown san francisco on this quiet and calm sunday night across the bay area. we do have another "spare the air" in effect this one on monday. poor air quality throughout much of the bay area coast inland east bay, santa clara valley, poor quality and no wood burping in effect for monday. right now showing you all the lights on a sunday evening. the forecast features call for

partly cloudy skies early on start to clear out overnight tonights' and that will allow for a sunny monday on the way. then we're tracking the record warmth moving in likely on wednesday, some of the record will be broken around the region. the next seven days are looking completely bone dry on the forecast. right now, temperature-wise, 52 in san francisco, 49 in napa. 50 in concord. 50, san jose. san carlos 50. so satellite radar, what we are tracking is a very stagnant atmosphere pattern. basically we have road block and that is high pressure off the coast. not allowing any storms to enter the bay area. all the storms are moving well north into washington and portland. so we'll stay rain-free and warm up. tomorrow more than, temperatures in 30s and 40s. by the afternoon, lot of locations in the mid-60s. it's on tuesday you'll feel the warmth when temperatures, widespread 70s.

these temperatures are some ten to 12 degrees above normal for this time of the year. the peak of the mild pattern occurs once wednesday. overnight low 30s in the north bay, 38, napa, 42, san francisco. 39 oakland. 38, san jose 37 the overnight low in concord mainly clear skies. tomorrow morning isolated patches of fog. otherwise mainly sunny. 61 in richmond. 62, san francisco. 63 oakland. 67 very warm degrees in san jose, 66 in santa rosa. fairfield, high of 61. the accuweather forecast the "spare the air" on tuesday. warm temperatures, 70s inland mid-to-upper 60s elsewhere. wednesday, that's when we're tracking the record warmth. a lot of these records mainly around these bay and our inland spots will go down thanks to temperatures in the mid-70s potentially. thursday and friday we were tracking at least a chance of rain.
