and good monday morning to you all. and it is a cold morning across a big stretch of the country. >> well take a look at these wind chills. minus 30 minus 40. that's dangerous cold pouring down from the north. >> the difference between minneapolis and miami this morning is over 100 degrees. this comes after a week end of extremes. we begin with susan saulny. >> reporter: fast-moving tornadoes. blankets of snow. severe weather in many part of the country this weekend. in the south, thunderstorms knocked down trees. receivering power lines and blocking roads. tornadoes confirmed in mississippi and alabama. another reported in georgia. the sound of chain saws ringing through a suburban atlanta neighborhood startled home owners as cleanup began. this church in southern georgia was damaged during a service on

through the plane's wreckage. a little second grader surviving. at one point, trying but failing to light a stick that would guide her way. hoping to get help for her parents, 9-year-old sister, and 14-year-old cousin all killed in the crash. >> she obviously wanted us to find her family. she said she feared they were dead. she was hopeful they were only sleeping. >> reporter: the plane took off from key west florida, friday night. dad taking the family home to illinois. just before 6:00 he reported engine problems. the plane crashing down landing upside down. sailor suffering a broken wrist, using her uninjured arm to climb out. 38 degrees and misting in the darkness. wearing shorts a t-shirt, and just one sock. from the air, we see her

journey. you can see lots of hills. you can see creeks. we're told she had to work her way through a 12-foot creek bed. ending up at this house. larry wilkins answering the door. >> we thought her arm was broke. her left foot was hurting pretty bad. >> reporter: right now, the question, what brought down the plane? investigators will examine the wreckage and try to find out. it could take days. gio benitez, abc news, kentucky. recovery workers are hoping to make prob progress in the recovery effort of the other plane crash. sonar has found what they believe to be five large pieces of the plane on the ocean floor. there's a controversial new thing. that icing could have caused the plane's engine to fail. experlts say however that is not possible. on an air bus jet. president obama is back at the white house after a two-week vacation in hawaii. today, the president will meet

the government's next jobs report comes out friday. the experts are anticipateing good news. the report is expected to show 230,000 jobs were added last month. it would be enough to make last year the strongest for job growth since 1999. the strengthening economy has experts predicting continued growth this year. gas prices are falling. diesel is not showing the same drop. it's 70 cents lower compared to last year. regular gas prices are down more than a dollar over that time. the price lag can be blamed on the u.s. exporting significant amounts of diesel as well as local tax policies. a growing number of music lovers are going old school. while digital album sales continue their downward vinyl album sales are up. the highest numbers since the

milwaukee feeling the effects of an arctic blast this morning. people there waking up to temperatures below zero. the wind chill minus 24. more coming late tonight. wisconsin is in the pocket of a snowstorm, blowing the frigid air from the pacific northwest to new england by the end of the work week. >> morning road conditions. take extra care on your community all across the northern part of the country. if you're flying, airport delays possible in chicago and minneapolis, all because of snow. a story developing overnight in new york. the killing of a well regarded hedge fund founder. >> his name is thomas gilbert. he was killed bay gunshot in his apartment. his wife was escorted from their

building with her identity partially obscured. a neighbor says he heard the incident take place. >> something just kaboom. like, just hit the floor loudly. like if something dropped on the floor. >> gilbert's son, a 30-year-old princeton grad spent the night in police custody as a person of interest in his father's death. a search is under way for a missing boat off the coast of hawaii. a fierce winter storm capsized the 74-foot sailboat on saturday. the first mate was not found. the boat was set to leave tomorrow for a humanitarian mission to christmas island. a sal advantage operation after a cargo ship was run aground deliberately off the coast of england. a major rescue operation with the 24 crew members and pilot having to be taken to safety. the ship was grounded to prevent it from capsizing.

the vessel was loaded with 1400 vehicles headed to germany. the cdc is expected to release its first flu report of 2015 today. the agency has been sounding the alarm. it's reached epidemic levels with 22 states seeing high levels. this year's vaccine is only 33% effective effective. new ed that working the night shift may be literally killing you. they studied nurses. working night shifts for more than five years increased their chances of dying from anything. the world health organization says working night shifts is a higher cancer risk than ultra violet radiation. a travel nightmare in san francisco. they spend more than 28 hours in an aircraft because of highly unusual fog. passengers described chaotic
