protesters found out today the police reports are not finished not yet, which means the d.a. can't file charges, not yet. it was the protest that blocked a major freeway interstate 80, for hours. the chp arrested more than 200 people on december 8th in berkeley and emeryville but a month later, virtually no charges have been filed. >> the number of people are here today who were called into court today do not have charges and do not even have a police report filed about them. >> the arrest was completely ridiculous. >> reporter: she was arrested that night and booked into the alameda county jail in dublin, where she says she spent 16 hours. this morning, she was among 100 demonstrators who packed the courthouse hallway in oakland for a schedule hearing. >> they are not even police reports about me which is ridiculous because i spent 16 hours doing something for absolutely no reason. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the d.a.'s office says no charges have been filed because

the d.a. has yet to receive any police reports from the arresting agency. the california highway patrol. >> we have 210 people arrested. it takes time to process all those reports ensure all the identities are confirmed before we forward those reports on. we want to make sure we do a complete and thorough investigation before we send it to the district attorney. >> all they can do is hand these charges over. that's not going to stop us. >> reporter: assuming the chp produces its reports, the d.a.'s office has one year to press charges. laura anthony, abc 7 news. oakland's new mayor spent her first full day learning the ins and outs of the police department. the mayor showed up at oakland police headquarters at 6:00 this morning. she attended police lineups and went department by department talking to officers and staff. she says her goal is to increase staffing but she wanted to hear directly from officers first. >> i will be doing some ride-alongs with officers in their cars out on oakland

streets. this is the most important thing for oakland to get safe and i need to understand it top to bottom. >> she will continue meeting with oakland police until midnight. she praised the work the police chief has done but stated that the yet-to-be hired city administrator will decide whether the chief stays on the job. official work has begun on a project designed to get you to los angeles from san francisco in just three hours without the hassle of an airport. the high speed rail project will wind through the heart of california, that is if all the money needed to pay for it comes through. still up in the air. hundreds joined the governor for a groundbreaking ceremony in fresno today. that is where work will begin connecting the rail system to modera. the train will run on 100% renewable energy, helping california reach its clean energy goals. he also sees it as a transit necessity as the state population is expected to grow to 46 million in the next 20 years. governor brown compared it to the b.a.r.t. project here in the

bay area. >> the mayor of berkeley said this thing was a complete boondoggle. now b.a.r.t. is getting more passengers every year. it's vital because there are only five lanes on the bridge. from the south to fresno and north, this is truly a california project bringing us together today. >> opponents of the project say $68 billion is just too much to spend and farmers in the central valley don't want it built across their fields. hayward man somehow escaped injury when an amtrak train hit the back of his car. sky 7 hd was overhead as the man headed home this morning. the collision happened near tennyson. firefighters say the man drove around the crossing arm after it dropped to warn drivers a train was coming. he almost made it. you see what happened. the man just drove away after the crash. he has been cited and his license is suspended. a head-on collision this morning injured four people and shut down a key high in contra

costa county for awhile. two victims suffered critical injuries. the accident happened just before 7:00 on byron highway near bronze road. the wreckage shows the force of the impact. that crash shut down byron highway for nearly two hours and caused major traffic congestion in the area. chp officers said one of the drivers likely drifted over the double yellow lines. both drivers suffered major injuries. a santa cruz man was arrested for impersonating a police officer on facebook and distributing child pornography under the officer's name. 31-year-old christopher schwetz was first arrested for possessing child pornography a year ago. police say that as an act of revenge against his arresting officer, he created a false facebook page for the santa cruz police officer and then posted inappropriate pictures. he is also charged with stalking. the san jose man with a history of fire-related crimes is in custody tonight accused of a series of car fires over the holidays. prosecutors filed eight counts

of arson against the 37-year-old jason gillaland one for each fire he's accused of starting. he was arrested on december 30th after he was spotted watching the aftermath of his eighth and final fire. he faces additional penalties because of two prior felony convictions. water service is now restored in san francisco general hospital. service was out for several hours today after a pipe broke and flooded the basement. a hospital spokesperson says the rupture did not affect medical care but patients getting elective surgery were given the option to postpone. school is expected to resume at four peninsula schools tomorrow after being closed by a water main break in san carlos. school staff there told parents who didn't know about the canceled school day. the broken line burst late last night, affecting tiara linda middle school san carlos charter and edison montisorre

school. this is video in belmont right across the street from the school and it was also forced to close today. two long-time employees of the san francisco 49ers are suing the ceo jed york, accusing him of age discrimination. the lawsuit says york orchestrated a purge of older workers to install younger tech-savvy hires as the organization shifted to its new stadium in santa clara. the plaintiffs were fired in 2011 and 2012 respectively. each worked for the niners for more than two decades. the suit also accuses the team of trying to conceal the reasons for firing both men who are seeking unspecified damages. the team refuses to comment tonight. livermore's randy johnson led a trio of star pitchers into the baseball hall of fame today. johnson won the cy young award five times. he received 97.3% of the vote. that is the eighth highest percentage in the history of voting. in 2001, his fastball against

the giants hit and killed a dove. here it is in slow motion. the official call was no pitch. people of livermore are thrilled with today's honor. abc 7 news reporter chris winn is there live now with more. chris? >> reporter: randy johnson graduated from livermore back in 1982. he last played for the giants in 2009. but as we learned today, people still talk about him as though it was yesterday. it wouldn't be a stretch to say this is the field that randy johnson built. for livermore senior and starting pitcher thomas triantos, every time he takes this field a reminder of the greatness that came before him. >> just the fact he came from almost like nothing and made it all the way to the top. >> reporter: at the high school this afternoon, word of johnson's vote into the baseball hall of fame spread fast. athletic director james petersdorf says it's all about perspective. >> if a guy that went to livermore high school can end up in the hall of fame, who says any of our guys can't end up

tonight mountain view police are asking for the public's help catching a peeper. they say he recorded cell phone video of people through apartment windows. the first incident happened in october at an apartment complex on california street. the victim said she saw a flashing red light in her window while in the bathroom. the second incident happened on new year's day. >> the victim was laying in the bedroom and through a window, saw somebody recording lights on on the cell again but in this instance, which was good there was a possible witness that saw the suspect. so we were able to get a general description of the suspect. >> police are asking people in the area of california street to be on the lookout for anybody acting suspiciously. a graffiti tagger is facing felony charges connected to more than 400 acts of vandalism.

investigators say richard james spray painted the word on property causing more than $17,000 in damage over the past year. police say they found evidence of these crimes in his home. the vandalism happened mostly in sonoma county. a man who survived a head-on collision on the golden gate bridge says the movable barrier can't come fast enough. it will be installed this weekend prompting the closure of the bridge for the entire weekend. the work starts saturday morning at one minute after midnight. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman has more from the marin headlands. >> reporter: good evening. quite a few behind us the bridge moving slowly today as it should and as we would hope. the closure is 12:01 saturday morning to put in a movable median barrier to separate the north and southbound traffic. this closure will be an inconvenience but if you have been in a head-on collision, you can live with it. grant gilligan knows better than

anyone how life may change in an instant. he learned it by surviving a horrific accident. >> i think about it every day i go across the bridge. >> reporter: it happened on january 24th 1996. you might even remember, a fatal head-on collision on the golden gate bridge that put grant in the hospital with a bruised heart. >> instantly could not breathe. >> reporter: as in all 16 head-ons since 1970, grant was a victim. there was no getting out of the way. >> no time to react at all. >> reporter: this weekend, almost 19 years later the bridge district will finally install a movable median barrier separating northbound cars from those heading south. >> the bridge opened in 1937. it has not been closed for a couple of days. >> reporter: this is the longest ever? >> this is the first such long closure of the bridge. >> reporter: it is only the fifth closure in history one the district does not take lightly considering 120,000 cars use the bridge every day. in response, the district will convoy buses across, increase ferry service and hope the public accepts a greater good.

having tested these barriers extensively, the district hopes to never see a head-on collision again. >> this will resist the impact. >> reporter: all those years, all that study and $30 million just to prevent accidents. all worth it, says grant gilligan, who survived, who married, who had a son and founded his own company. >> if you know statistically someone's going to die at one point on that bridge, how do you go on thinking, allowing that to happen? >> reporter: wayne freedman, abc 7 news. couple of police dogs are getting some well-deserved recognition tonight. zeus works with the mountain view police department. during a recent traffic stop officers say zeus and his keen sense of smell alerted them to a hidden compartment. inside was more than a quarter million dollars worth of methamphetamine. good bust for police. in antioch, officers there are mourning the loss of a 14-year-old canine hero named

thor. he was injured several times on the job, including being wounded in a shootout with a burglary suspect. even though thor was hurt he held on to that suspect until the man could be arrested. thor is credited with saving the lives of two officers that night. turning to some consumer news. you may have one in your car, the touch screens that control the navigation the music and the phone. >> they are in so many cars. consumer reports is partnering exclusively with 7 on your side's michael finney. he's here with some information on some of those systems which can be tricky to use. >> yeah. drivers are not in love with the first version of them. they find them too complicated. they say they don't always work. now, that's the bad news. the good user-friendly systems are out there. the idea behind infotainment systems is simple. give drivers an easy to use way to access their phone, music and navigation while keeping their eyes on the road. but some systems are unreliable. the worst according to consumer reports' survey is infiniti's in

touch. >> more than one out of five q-150 owners report a problem with the car's system. that's horrible for a brand new car. >> reporter: some systems like cadillac's q are just plain frustrating. there are no knobs so many functions are done using flush buttons that are temperamental. ford's my ford touch has been both unreliable and frustrating. so the company is introducing a completely redesigned system called sync 3 in 2016 models. car makers are also working with phone makers to make controls simpler. apple's car play integrates your iphone into your car. for apple users, that means the screen is familiar and you can use voice commands. for now, if you want apple's car play, you will have to get it on the aftermarket and that can cost as much as $1200. but it will become available on many brand new cars very soon. google android auto is set for
