francisco's french community which is 60,000 strong, are expected to come here to the consulate to pay their respects. ruben is one of dozens of french business owners living in san francisco. today, the talk at his shop was about the terrorist attack in his homeland. >> all the families of the people that have suffered. >> reporter: it is part of a french hub in the dog patch neighborhood. french president francois hollande visited last year. his trip showcasing the large french community here. at the cafe the television is tuned to latest on the terrorist attack on the satirical newspaper, charlie hebdo which used to be on the shelves here. >> it's part of the freedom and

french word for weekly newspaper. a dutch political cartoonist tweeted this image of two pencils designed to reference the world trade center's twin towers. and this disturbing drawing from an australian cartoon it a man in black shooting an artist with the quote he drew first. one more tweet here from the center for investigative reporting in the east bay. reporters holding signs. this is the worst terrorist attack on french soil in more than 50 years. coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00, we look at the press freedoms now being threatened. the san francisco man accused of stabbing a transgender woman aboard a muni bus was arraigned today on hate crime charges. prosecutors say he verbally abused a couple on board a number 49 muni bus saturday afternoon because of their transgender status. he then followed his victims off a bus and stabbed one of them in the chest. samantha holzey needed ten stitches to close the stab

wound. the stabbing sends a scary message to the city's transgender community. >> imagine if all you want to do is go to lunch yet between you and lunch is someone who wants to kill you because of the way you look. >> the suspect is being held on $2 million bail. san francisco police have arrested a los angeles woman in connection with a monday night arson fire at the pacific heights house made famous by the 1993 movie "mrs. doubtfire." the 25-year-old was arrested in san jose this morning. you are looking at the owner of the home in those pictures. she faces arson and attempted murder charges. the homeowner is a plastic surgeon who specializes in a gender reassignment procedure. he told police he believes whoever set fire to the house was a disgruntled former patient. shakeup at san jose's police department means you will likely see more officers on the streets there starting next month. the department's metro unit will be temporarily assigned to patrol duty placing 23 more officers and three sergeants on the street to help fill a

staffing gap. the metro unit focuses on gang-related crimes and undercover operations. the move is designed to be temporary with new officers now in training coming in to fill the void. also in san jose a big rally to try to stop the sale of o'connor hospital. one of six hospitals the catholic health care group wants to sell. the others include seton medical center and st. louise. abc 7 news reporter chris winn joins us with more. >> reporter: good evening. all quiet right now but it was a much different story earlier today. we are live at o'connor hospital in san jose. take a look behind me you can see it is one of four catholic hospitals in the bay area up for sale by the daughters of charity. the attorney general's office now trying to decide whether or not to approve the sale and if it's in the best interest of the community. for many of these health care employees today's rally outside o'connor hospital was somewhat personal. >> my husband was born here. my extended family has been coming here for 50 years.

>> reporter: but inside the building this afternoon, a public hearing put on by the attorney general's office. people speaking up about the proposed sale of nonprofit daughters of charity, which owns and operates o'connor to for-profit prime health care. supporters say it's the right thing to do. >> otherwise we are looking at bankruptcy devastated employees, devastated community and patients. people will die. >> reporter: in recent weeks, both sides have taken to the air waves to state their case. this commercial from the daughters of charity. the other from hospital and health care union seiu-uhw. prime health care executives say they will preserve most jobs and pensions. they pledge to keep the hospital open for at least five years but critics aren't buying it. >> i don't believe everything they say is true. i believe at this point they're saying what they need to say to get the sale. >> reporter: santa clara

supervisor is also concerned. >> the more for-profit entities we have the less opportunity there is to provide services to the over 200,000 people who live in our community who have no access to health insurance right now. >> reporter: more hearings are scheduled this week in gilroy, moss beach and daly city. in the meantime, there is one thing everyone can agree on. >> we are all here to try to make sure that we are served with quality heal care. >> reporter: the attorney general's office is expected to make a final decision by early february. chris winn, abc 7 news. >> here are the upcoming public meetings chris was talking about. tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. friday, a meeting will be held at the city of daly city's merced room to talk about seton medical center at 1:00 p.m. we have more news of the day now. foie gras is no longer illegal in the state of california. today a federal judge struck down the state's law prohibiting restaurants from serving this delicacy saying it went too

far. and encroached on the domain of the federal government by banning the sale of it across state lines. california banned foie gras in 2012 after animal rights activists successfully campaigned for this ban, claiming the process to make it was inhumane. foie gras is made by force feeding birds for the purpose of enlarging their livers. the ban followed a series of abc 7 news i-team reports showing undercover video of birds being force fed at central valley farms. again, no longer illegal in california. bay area researchers are working to track down tainted food meantime. roughly 3,000 americans die every year from food-borne illnesses. now lawrence livermore national laboratory has teamed up with startup dna trek to quickly and easily track down the source of tainted food. the technology is a spray that is like an invisible bar code, really. it's odorless and tasteless and has been approved by the fda. it can track food back to the farm and even to who picked it and the exact plant it came from.

believe it or not, it's match spoefk specific. it can track down mislabeled and fraudulent foods. an alameda county resident is one of nine people who got the measles after visiting disneyland. all nine were at the park between december 15th and 20th. the patients are all between eight months old and 21 years old. six were not vaccinated. disney is the parent company of abc 7. beautiful day this april 7th. i'm sorry, it's january 7th. just feels like april 7th. bay area setting records for heat today. these are pictures from downtown san jose. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is outside with more. >> it's gorgeous. it does feel like spring out here. as we take a look at the temperatures for today, we got up into record territory. oakland, 71 degrees. richmond, 70. gilroy 73. all three new records for the day. it was pretty warm in half moon bay, 75 degrees. 78 in santa cruz. 70 in redwood city.

livermore napa santa rosa 66 degrees. of course, it's january you are probably wondering do we have any rain on the way. i'll be back to let you know in a few minutes. much more ahead this wednesday night, abc 7 was live when a missing 10-year-old was found in the north bay. coming up did she run away because she was bullied? a raccoon in the bay area is shot by a crossbow. the reward just offered to find out who is responsible for this. also ahead, the in-flight internet system that might be snooping on its users. a look at some of the coolest gadgets yet from the consumer electronics show in vegas.

tonight about how and why a 10-year-old girl disappeared from an elementary campus in santa rosa. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is there live with more on this. >> reporter: it was shortly after 8:00 this morning when 10-year-old victoria valdez asked her teacher if she could go to the bathroom. she did not return. her teacher alerted school administrators. a search of the school yielded nothing. at 8:30 they notified santa rosa police. more than a dozen officers with the help of the sheriff's helicopter searched for the missing 10-year-old. they fanned out to nearby neighborhoods and businesses and the homes of relatives to make sure a family member did not abduct her. nothing panned out, until they activated their reverse 911 system. >> we can call residents and businesses in the neighborhood to alert them of the missing juvenile and we also used our social media sites to alert the public that monitors our social media sites or subscribes to it about the missing juvenile. >> reporter: that's when they found victoria, about four miles away from the school walking

alone. several residents had called police about possible sightings. at least one got it right. >> sent an officer out and located the juvenile. she's healthy and there's no foul play suspected. >> reporter: the officer at the scene verified it was victoria and that she walked out of the campus on her own. the officer drove her back to school. she was reunited with her grandmother and other family members. her motive for suddenly leaving is still unclear. but a police dispatcher said over the radio that the girl told investigators quote, kids were mean to her. assistant school superintendent jason lee says bullying is not a big issue here in the district. >> we do the best we can and are really proactive to make sure we work with parents and families to make our school safe. >> reporter: police and the school tell us they are providing social advocates to help the girl through whatever concerns she may have. vic lee, abc 7 news. an oakland man has been arrested in the death of a woman during an attempted robbery

outside an el dorado hills bar last night. 41-year-old anderson swift approached two women and demanded money and their keys. it happened about midnight in a parking lot east of sacramento. women turned to run back into the bar but police say swift fired at the woman. one of them was hit. he took off in a car belonging to the victim. anderson crashed a short time later and was taken into custody. a building in san francisco has been temporarily red-tagged after a car crashed right through the wall. take a look at this video that we just got in moments ago. we will try to get that up for you. we are literally trying to turn it around quickly. a car crashed right into a restaurant on california and larkin streets. let me tell you what happened. it happened after a crash involving two vehicles, there you go. the white mini cooper and a toyota truck. there you see the mini cooper. no word yet on exactly how this crash happened or why. but these pictures just coming in now as the investigation into what happened gets under way. also in san francisco, meet

a potential breakthrough by scientists. they have discovered a new antibiotic that could turn the tide against the rise of a drug resistant bacteria or super-bugs you heard so much about. researchers from northeastern university grew it in its native dirt rather than in a lab dish. it has cured mice in the lab. antibiotic resistance causes two million infections and 23,000 deaths in the united states each year so it's a big problem and it's getting bigger. a recent report warned that super-bugs could kill up to ten million people a year by 2050. the last major antibiotic was discovered in the 1980s. this is a big deal. a $5,000 reward is being offered to find the killer of a raccoon in west oakland. a passerby found the animal alive but badly wounded. you can see how many times it was hit. it was found sunday in a church parking lot. it had been hit with five

aluminum darts fired from a crossbow. raccoon was taken to a wildlife rescue center for treatment but sadly later died. the animal legal defense fund is putting up $5,000 for information to lead to the arrest and conviction of whoever did this horrible thing. a campaign is under way in oakland to find homes for some hard luck hounds. oakland animal services has launched a campaign to find companions for 12 dogs that have been at the shelter longer than two months. here are pictures of the dogs that need homes. look at these faces. as part of the campaign the shelter will waive adoption fees for qualified homes. they will also provide a pet food express sponsored makeover including a new collar, leash and dog bed. oakland animal services is located at 1101 29th avenue. a reminder tonight the golden gate bridge is closing this weekend. the closure begins saturday morning at one minute after midnight until 4:00 a.m. monday morning. crews will be putting a movable median barrier on the bridge to prevent head-on collisions.
