the breaking news is about san francisco's bid for the olympics. good afternoon. >> yes. i'm larry biel and she's ama daetz. >> the dreams have been dashed in the past half hour. the olympic committee announced it selected boston as the u.s. city to bid on hosting the 2024 summer olympics. los angeles and washington, d.c. lost out on the bid. boston will compete against other international cities. the final decision by the international olympic committee is not expected for two years. coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00 vic lee will have live reaction from mayor ed lee, and others on the bay area bid committee on losing out to

boston. for the first time since the george h.w. bush administration -- >> she will not seek a fifth term in 2016. the former marin county supervisor served in the senate since the early '90s. leann? >> reporter: i have to tell you no surprises here. boxer was not asking for any campaign contributions, which to many seemed a little odd. now, the press was constantly asking her if and when she would announce she was running for reelection. today the senator finally put the matter to rest in a way we have never seern before. >> i will not be running for the senate in 2016. >> reporter: the announcement was previously recorded. noticeably absent was the press. instead, boxer's grandson asked

the scripted questions from her living room. >> it is so critical they say progressive. i want to help our democratic candidate for president make history. but you know what? i want to come home. >> reporter: this morning the senator called those closest to her, including napsncy pelosi who was on her way to this press conference and missed talking to her. she was nearly in tears. >> she called and said she wanted to talk to me personally. i thought she wanted to have dinner tonight or something. oh, my. her decision is an important one for her and her family. it's all personal and individual. >> reporter: she also phoned the chairman of the california democratic party. boxer was one of burton's aides when she ran for congress in the mid-70s. >> she quit her job, came to work for me ran my marin county campaign. >> reporter: burton never forgot that. when boxer decided to run herself, she asked for his

blessing. >> she called me up and said i'm going to run for congress. and i think i said why? >> reporter: the well-connected burton was instrumental in her victory. >> how out of touch they are. >> reporter: as a congresswoman she was seen as sharp and aggressive. she was known for exposing wasteful military spending. >> i'm a boxer i'll fight for you. yet she had believability about that. in an increasing age of cynicism. >> reporter: in 1992 against many odds boxer won a seat in the senate along with diane feinstein. >> we went from two to nine women in the senate very rapid lip. and now we're 20. and growing. >> reporter: she had many loyal supporters for being an arduous defender of the environment, and respecting the men and women in uniform. adding to today's unusual announcement boxer ended the interview with -- >> as long as there are issues

change. political experts are already weighing in on the legacy that boxer leaves. >> an associate professor said boxer will be remembered as a reliably liberal voter in the senate. >> her election was significant. she cast a liberal vote in the house and senate as chair of the senate environmental committees, she's done a lot of work on the keystone pipeline, preventing drilling in the wildlife refuge. mostly also as the lively liberal vote in the senate. >> we went digging into our archives and found file video from barbara boxer's election victory in 1992 in san francisco. that was the so-called year of the woman when both boxer, islam. >> this is a tragic event. i'm going to march on saturday to show my defiance to murderers and evil fundamentalists. >> reporter: the search for the

suspected killers continues. one suspect turned himself in, but the brothers are still on the loose after allegedly opening fire in the paper's offices killing ten journalists and two police officers. this man in northern france said police are going door to door checking every house, after two men resembling the suspects robbed a gas station there. in the u.s., several places are now on heightened alert. though political satirists say they are not backing down. >> cartoonists, if they're provoked not to do something we'll do it. >> reporter: a message of defiance set with a pen. to underscore that point the remaining staff of the paper said they will publish this week on time. 1 million copies. that is an increase of 3,000% over what they normally do. they are not backing down. live in new york abc 7 news. back to you, larry and ama.

an oakland mom is spending time with her newborn baby today. but it almost didn't happen. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen tells us about the second opinion that changed everything. >> reporter: inside the intermediate intensive care nursery at lucille packard children's hospital at stanford a heartwarming scene between a mother and her son. one that almost didn't come to be. >> things go through your head thinking the worst, hoping for the best. >> reporter: at 21 weeks, a routine ultrasound detected a large mass in her baby's chest. as a result a recommendation from torres' doctor to terminate. >> she said that kids like this didn't make it to teenage years. or he wouldn't even make it to

birth. and my life would be at risk. >> reporter: she decides to seek a second opinion. it led her to a maternal field medicine specialist at stanford. he knew the pregnancy was high risk but believed the baby could be saved. >> we didn't know if it was going to be a success. we did everything according to plan. >> reporter: that plan included a dual operating strategy one for the delivery and the immediate removal of the mass, both which came at 34 weeks back on december 6th. >> this mass was impinging on both the heart and lungs and preventing their functioning properly. >> reporter: torres remembers the moment after birth by c-section. >> as soon as he was born, they took him. and right into surgery. so i didn't get to see him like until the next morning. >> reporter: angel is now healthy and will go home in the next week or two. a mother's love rewarded with a second chance. >> i wake up and i just come to

him. thanking god every day. that we were here. >> reporter: a constant reminder that life sure is a beautiful thing. reporting in palo alto, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> how precious. an alabama shooting range is getting just what it wanted when it posted a controversial picture of a baby on its facebook page. here's the photo. it shows an infant lying down with a handgun across its stomach surrounded by rifles. the owners say they don't endorse the picture but hoped that it would get people talking. >> primarily here at montgomery shooting complex, we promote firearm safety. so in order to stimulate a little dialogue, we put up a controversial picture in the effort to get people's feedback and get some awareness about that topic. >> reaction, as you can imagine, was immediate. many call the photo inappropriate and outrageous. others didn't see anything wrong saying as long as the guns weren't loaded, no big deal.

the shooting range has now taken that picture down but not after inciting plenty of conversation and getting tons of free publicity. >> exactly. the white house is reportedly trying to determine if a photo on a rap group's instagram page is that of president obama's daughter malia. it appears to be the 16-year-old wearing a shirt sporting the group's logo. a representative from group pro era say they received the photo from a friend. the authenticity of the instagram picture has not been verified. the president and first lady have kept their daughters out of the social media spotlight. robert muller released his report today into the nfl's investigation of the ray rice abuse case and muller's report said the league collected substantial information about last february's assault in atlantic city but could have obtained more. muller found no evidence that the commissioner roger goodell or the league saw the video before it was put out online in september.

a lawsuit official had claimed he mailed it to league headquarters in april so we may never know what really happened here. i'll have lots more on this on the sports cast at 6:00. the league basically gets what it wants. the league is in the clear and basically get a light slap on the wrist. daylight saving time is deadly. a university of colorado graduate student analyzed car crashes between 2002 and 2011 and found a spike in fatal accidents during the six days following the start of daylight saving time each spring. in fact he blames an estimated 302 deaths on it. the report found no such change in the fall. suggesting the lost sleep when we move clocks an hour forward leaves drivers groggy and more likely to get into a crash. let's take a look at the forecast. we were mentioning the thick layer of haze. >> yeah. >> it's just hanging over us. spencer christian has more as we look at the accuweather forecast. >> larry and ama, it is lingering, that haze is. seven consecutive days now.

it looks like it will continue into the weekend. we have partly cloudy skies right now. and the lingering haze. a little bit cooler conditions than we had at this hour yesterday. look at the 24-hour temperature change here. you can see four degrees cooler right now in novato than at this hour yesterday. no change at sfo. let's take an update look at our el nino situation. one month ago this was the condition of the equatorial pacific. areas of modest warming above the average levels. but this week we see fewer areas of warming. the equatorial warming is starting to cool a bit. we have about a 50% or 60% chance of a weak el nino phenomena developing this season. and it will have little impact on the california drought. we can stop asking questions about that for a while. here's a look from the exploratorium camera. actually, that's not the

exploratorium camera. we see the haze hanging there. hazy skies continuing into the weekend, at least poor air quality lingers on and on. it will be mainly dry the next seven days. you see a couple weak disturbances there kicking some clouds into the bay area sky. these systems are not likely to produce any rainfall for us. as you can see the storm track continues to flow well to the north. not letting any rain-making systems move into the bay area for a while. 5:00 tomorrow morning it will be partly to mostly cloudy. we'll see a sunnier afternoon tomorrow than we had today. a little break in the clouds tomorrow afternoon. sunday morning at 5:00 it will be a bit cloudier then. a slight chance of a sprinkle moving up from the south, sunday morning. no measurable rain expected from that system. as we look long range, it appears we might expect some measurable rain in the next nine or ten days.

for the first time in more than two decades, california will have a senate seat up for grabs. democrat barbara boxer announced today she won't be seeking reelection to a new term next year. she was first elected to the senate in 1992. now, coming up at 5:00 abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler is looking at who could be next. she tweeted, the political guessing game has begun, who will run for senator boxer's

seat. the deadly massacre investigation is still under way. armed assault police are going door to door looking for the suspects. police are looking for two brothers believed to be behind the massacre. prosecutors will not charge a san jose police officer accused of sending tweets threatening protesters. they say officer phillip white's tweets were troubling, but not criminal. white has been suspended from the force. abc 7 news reporter david louie has been following the story. david? >> reporter: they tweets definitely set off a huge firestorm of controversy in the san jose community. today the district attorney's office decided that in this case, it was inappropriate and unprofessional for a police officer to put out social media threats to kill someone but in this case, again, it was not criminal. the district attorney's office said there was no specific victim when officer phillip white made the controversial

tweets following threats he had received on his voicemail. one tweet said, quote threaten me or my family and i will use my god-given and law-appointed right and duty to kill you. another one was by the way if anyone says their lives don't matter, i'll be at the theater off-duty carrying my gun. >> the police were unable to find any person who could say that they were in fear of their safety. >> reporter: a coalition of community groups marched last month carrying petitions with 15,000 signatures seeking criminal charges against officer white. district attorney jeff rosen and san jose police chief were on hand to meet with them. today they say the matter is not over. >> there is no way to move forward to positive community-police relations as long as officer white is allowed to be a police officer. that is not a fork in the road moment for san jose that's an

either/or moment for san jose. >> reporter: because the public filed the complaint, an internal investigation is now under way, which by law can take up to 365 days to complete. at the asian law alliance, one of the groups that protested last month they're hoping the interm investigation may lead to the firing of officer white. >> the chief was adamant in saying this was unprofessional. even the police union which generally wouldn't do this, distanced themselves from the officer. so they were also very critical of his conduct. >> reporter: in san jose david louie, abc 7 news. as we mentioned earlier, president obama returned to washington this evening to pay his respects at the french embassy following the terror attack in paris. earlier today he appeared in arizona where he unveiled new help for people planning on buying a home. abc's karen travers has that story. >> reporter: president obama hit the road today to sell his state of the union priorities. he announced a cut in mortgage

insurance premiums on federal loans, with a goal of making home ownership more affordable and attractive for new buyers. >> we want to make sure that everybody has access that is the american dream. >> reporter: back in washington republicans were revving up their engine. >> they had new majorities in the house and senate and i meant it. >> reporter: the 114th congress has only been in office for three days. but the white house has already issued two veto threats. today a senate committee moved forward on the controversial keep the pipeline, putting the issue to a vote. it would run from canada to the gulf of mexico. it could cause devastating environmental damage in the states it runs through. but supporters say it will boost u.s. energy independence and the economy. >> we're asking the president again today to do that by working with us to end the gridlock, and get this job creating infrastructure project moving. >> reporter: the white house said this week the president would veto a keystone bill if it

hits his desk. supporters of the legislation acknowledge they don't have enough votes to overcome that threat. no surprise president obama will veto any legislation that makes changes to his health care law. that doesn't mean republicans aren't going to go ahead and try. karen travers abc news, washington. while in arizona president obama met with former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. today is the fourth anniversary of the mass shooting that left six people dead, plus giffords and a dozen others wounded. in his speech the president told the crowd giffords is a hero and he's proud of her gun control advocacy. connecticut's highest court ruled today against a 17-year-old cancer patient who was forced to undergo chemotherapy. the justices decided the state was not violating the rights of the patient by forcing her to undergo treatment for hodgkins lymphoma treatment that she does not want. the state stepped in when the patient ran away from home after undergoing two chemo sessions.

lawyers for cassandra claim she was mature enough to make decisions for herself. recovery crews are hopeful they will be able to raise the tail section late today of the airasia plane that crashed in the java sea. it was located earlier this week. it contains one of the two critical black boxes that could tell investigators what caused flight 8ing ing8501 to crash. 162 passengers and crew were onboard the singapore-bound jet. pressure is growing for yahoo! to buy aol. shares of both companies shot up after a key shareholder urged marissa meier to purchase aol. jeff smith said he's increasingly concerneded with yahoo!'s acquisition of cable companies. and they should focus on acquiring aol instead. he estimates a merger would save

the company $1 billion to $1.5 billion. the santa rosa climber facing challenges on the granite cliff. his hand injuries are so severe, he's fallen off the section he's trying to scale eight times over the past two days. >> i taped two of those three fingers, which definitely makes it hard to feel what you're hanging on to. i feel like it's only appropriate that it will be a little bit of a battle. >> he's now three sections behind his climbing partner, tommy caldwell. they had hoped to finish their climb by tomorrow. now the pair's videographer said if jorgerson does not finish in a few days, his partner will continue on up. that is quite a task. >> certainly is. be glad you're in california.

millions of americans are shivering throughout much of the country today, brought on by the coldest weather of this winter so far. >> yeah, it's been brutal. as abc news reporter marcy gonzalez shows us, snow is falling in parts of the u.s. not accustomed to freezing temperatures. >> reporter: when the temperature drops so low that fountains freeze in florida, you know cold doesn't begin to describe how they're feeling farther north. >> it's uncomfortable. i hate it. can't wait for spring. >> reporter: more than half the country is dealing with this brutal blast of arctic air. with record-breaking lows from new england to the gulf coast. windchills in chicago and elsewhere dropping to 15 to 25 degrees below zero. >> i would much rather have six or eight inches of snow rather than what we're going to be facing. >> reporter: not a snow day, but a cold day, for more than 1

co eating an avocado a day could extend your life. people who ate one every day actually reduced their bad cholesterol by 10%. the findings also suggest throwing in a little extra avocado could lower your risk of heart disease. researchers say avocados are a better fat food, and can be part of a heart-healthy diet. the avocado board did help fund the study, but the researchers say the organization played no other role in the findings.

>> still an apple a day? >> i think so. and avocado. consumer news federal regulators are fining honda for failing to fully disclose safety defects in its vehicles. >> michael finney says it's just another sign of the feds getting tough on carmakers. >> this is your proof. federal regulator today fined honda $70 million for not disclosing safety issues. the company received two separate fines, together the largest in history. the national highway traffic safety administration hit the automaker with a $35 million fine for failing to disclose more than 1,700 deaths and injury claims. honda received the second $35 million fine for not reporting warranty claims and claims made under honda's customer satisfaction campaign. the automaker said it is already taking steps to address its shortcomings. the second mobile carrier
