>> it is saturday, january 10th. good morning i'm chris nguyen. weather-wise we are looking at a pretty nice weekend. let's get a check of the forecast now with meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking live doppler 7hd. hi lisa. >> hey chris good morning. there's fog from napa to santa rosa but the fog is just one issue. we are also looking at another spare the air day. it's the ninth consecutive spare the air day. we will have hazy conditions and numbers mild from oakland to san francisco. low 50s. 47 in league hill, 45 in half moon bay. the sutro tower camera kind of obscured right now but air quality obscured will be in the north bay and the santa clara valley with the particulates

really beginning to stack up. we need a weather system in here that will scour things out. of course, we need rain. we are going 17 days without rain. upper 50s to lower 60s right now with unhealthy air. we will look for a warming trend, but there is perhaps some rain in the affing. i'll explain coming up. >> thank you. if you are looking to drive across the old gate bridge this weekend you are out of luck because it is closed. there's a median being constructed that will help prevent head-on collisions. we have a look at the work in progress. nick good morning. >> chris, this is a full-on construction project. good morning to you. and i'm thinking that this is the first time you and i have worked together so you wanted to make sure i got the big story of the day right? i appreciate that. take a look. you will see exactly what i'm talking b the crews are putting in the movable barrier. we watched them doing this all

night. it started just after midnight. the clock is tick to go complete the job that started just before midnight. officials shutdown the golden gate bridge to vehicles late last night so workers can involved movable media barrier to prevent head-on collisions. it's part of an effort to increase safety. >> there will be a round-robin activity of trucks bringing the 30-inch sections of barrier bringing them on trucks and taking them off by fork trips and they have to be laid from one end of the bridge to the other. 3500 of those total. >> now, to create a movable barrier 35,000 steal clad concrete blocks held together by concrete pins willic installed along the bridge and on the approach portion of the highway 101 north portion of the bridge. to recon figure the six lanes during the commute the one foot

wide barrier will be moved using trucks. bicycles and emergency vehicles and buts can cross while the work is being done. this is why they had to close the bridge. the bridge is schedule today reopen to all traffic in time for the monday morning commute. i have been told i will have an update from officials in it about an hour, and chris at 10:00 a.m. they are going to take me on to that bridge to see what it's all about. and i will shoot a lot of video and tweet ridiculously. live at the golden gate bridge, abc7 news. >> we look forward to your update. so if you have to make the drive to the north bay to san francisco this weekend the detour will take you along interstate 80 and over the bay bridge that. drive normally takes about an hour but with all the extra traffic plan ahead for a longer commute. it's difficult to predict exactly how much the shut-down

will impact traffic, but transportation officials aren't taking any chances. they are preparing for a rough weekend ahead. abc7 news reporter alan wang has that part of the story. >> this has never really been done on this scale before. >> the closing of the golden gate bridge this weekend could cause gridlock all over the bay area. the expectation is that drivers between san francisco and the north bay will funnel through the oakland bridge down the 85-80 corridor and across the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> the richmond-san rafael bridge is two lanes in each direction. you have two lanes expected to carry not only the normal weekend but now the surplus weekend bridge. >> we came here to mark this off our bucket list. >> they are tourists who had to alter their weekend plans. >> we were going to go see the miur wood tomorrow morning. now we will be going south. >> to alleviate the congestion, the transit is running four

>> 5:05. developing news. police in san francisco are investigating a shooting that left four people dead. it happened at around 10:00 last night on page street in the city of haze valley neighborhood. police say four men were shot to death inside a vehicle. right now no suspects are in custody but police were interviewing witnesses throughout the night. >> there were a lot of shots fired. some went into dwellings, and right now we are trying to find out and check on our residents to make sure known inside a residents was hit but there were a lot of shots fired. >> police say they are looking into the motive for the shooting but say the area has been having issues with gang violence >> across the atlantic, three terror suspects in paris are dead while a fourth is still on the run. authorities are looking for this woman. she's the 26-year-old girlfriend of one. dead suspects. the three men were killed in two separate police standoffs yesterday. hostages they took were also

killed. it brings this week's death toll to 20. marcy gonzalez has the latest. >> a day of terror in france ending with that flash. hostages running for their lives at the scene of one of two standoffs that left three accuse ed terrorists dead. the first at this printing factory near charles de gaulle airport where the brothers accused of the massacre wednesday at charlie hebdo were cornered by police. this were hold up for hours, finally coming outside shooting at officers before the gun battle that left both brothers dead, one called a french tv station. another called that television station from a medical vehicle. the man who killed them thursday were holding hoes fans at the supermarket near paris. he reportedly said he

synchronoused his attack with the brothers. the s.w.a.t. team swarmed in killing him and finding four hostages dead. his accomplice is still on the run. the french president saying through a translator the country remains on high alert. >> france also knows this is not over yet. >> al-qaeda in yemen has now claimed responsibility for the terror attack at the charlie hebdo newspaper earlier this week. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. attorney general eric holder will represent the united states at the meeting of world leaders in paris this weekend to talk about combating terrorism. >> during the hostage stand off police were getting tips from a 20-year-old man who was hidden in a box in the building. for more than six messages he sent text messages to his father who sent them to police.

he had information on the layout of the building and crucial information. the gun men never knew he was in the building. meanwhile a travel alert for americans overseas. the u.s. state department is urgently all americans living or traveling abroad to be more vigilant because of the attacks as well as in canada. and muslims take together in union scare last night to show solidarity for the people of paris and the shooting victims. katie marzullo has more. >> one by one they light the candles and when they are done the flickering lights read "peace." they are a peace-loving people and they are outside and they feel the sorrow of everybody else who has been -- and the victim of terrorism. >> bay area muslims wanted to do something to show they stand in solidarity with the people of paris. and to reject the notion that

like you've never experienced before. discover brookside. >> good morning. a very foggy look at the golden gate bridge. the golden gate bridge is closed for 52 hours. longest closer since 1957. we will have more details from reporter nick smith throughout the morning. 5:14 is the time. investigators searching for black box necessary the crashed air asia plane have lifted the tail portion of the aircraft out of the java sea. the tail was hoisted from a depth of about 100 feet. the operation came two weeks after the plane went down,

killing all 162 people on board. officials tell abc news ping-like sounds believed to be coming from the plane's black boxes were detected from the seabed. but due to strong currents divers were forced to suspend their underwater efforts for the time being. happening today a private funeral will be held today as friends and family bid a final farewell to long time espn anchor stewart scott. a visitation service was held yesterday in raleigh, north carolina. scott died sunday at the age of 49 after a long battle with stomach cancer. remembered mostly for his quick wit and colorful sports commentary scott became an inspiration, especially to those fighting cancer. president obama released a statement saying scott encouraged and inspired others with courage and love. comedian bill cosby was heckled once again during a live performance in canada. it happened last night in hamilton ontario when a group stood up and began chanting we

believe "we believe the women." he continued his comedy routine after they removed the hecklers. he later released a statement thank fans for their support. at least 18 women in recent months have accused him of past sexual assault. no charges have been filed. police want your help finding a suspected bank robber. the u.s. bank inside the safe way on hamilton avenue was robbed just after 11:30 a.m. yesterday. surveillance cameras captured this picture of the suspect, who police say had a hand handgun and got away with an unknown amount of cash. imagine glueing race sore-sharp dimes flat against a wall and climbing up the wall for half a mile. that's essentially what a man is trying to do on the don wall in yosemite. it's known as the hardest rock climb in the world. tiffany wilson has more on what they are up against. >> for the climbers, the don

was to deliver more than 5,000 pounds of food experiments and other items. but it's revolutionary attempt to land the leftover booster on an ocean barge was not successful. the company's founder elan mussing, said the booster came down too hard and broke apart. it was the second try this week by space-x to launch its dragon cargo ship. today marks the ninth straight spare the air day in the bay area and that means less of this. business for firewood in richmond. no one is buying any firewood. owner, frank, tells us he's telling half of what he sold the past few years. air quality officials say wood smoke is the single largest source of pollution in the winter but he doesn't agree with that. >> it's a little hard to believe. and i'm sure it is a factor, but

mild. san francisco 52. 50 oakland, 48 san carlos and 47 has been san jose, morgan hill and 45 on the coast. and from our roof camera you can see that it's very still, as well. 41 santa rosa. could see numbers drop into the upper 30s for you. there's fog. santa rosa, napa, 39 with 47 fairfield and mid-40s concord. upper 40s in livermore. so 24 hours ago we were milder. so we are chilly this morning up in the north bay. a couple degrees cooler from san carlos to san jose and five degrees cooler for you in livermore. so the east bay hills camera can't see too much out there. another hazy afternoon on the way with a chance of sprinkles coming your way tomorrow as the system offshore begins to sink to the south and high pressure builds in behind it come monday. that will bring us some mild patterns and we have to wait to next weekend it looks like, until we see some rain. here's the golden gate bridge and look at the air quality with

the spare the air day. north bay and the santa clara looking at the highest concentrations of pollutants here. do what you can not to add to that. with the cloudy skies, you can see the culprit. it's an area of low pressure. heading down toward santa barbara, and as it continues to dive to the south, the circulation around the low is counterclockwise. so it will bring up not only the clouds but the possibility of perhaps a few sprinkles as we head towards late tonight into early tomorrow. and then behind that it's high pressure that builds back in. but the last time it rained were you wondering, it was christmas eve, so that's 17 days without rainfall. looks like we will make it to about three weeks and then maybe get some rain. you know, a mid-season winter dry spell not unusual. we've got it. and now we have to change it up aity about. 59 in vallejo, 61 palo alto, and 62 san jose. 63 morgan hill. and the accuweather seven-day

i love my sister. 40 flavors. 100 calories or less. >> welcome back. gold state warrior player seth curry granted some wishes yesterday. four lucky kids got to practice with him in oakland. they are huge warrior fans and curry is their idol. one got a special haircut and another came from albuquerque for a welcome break from hospital and surgeries. >> it's amazing seeing his reaction. he's been over the moon, especially yesterday when he saw seth curry for the first time. he can't sleep. he had a hard time eating. he wants to play basketball constantly. >> pretty cool 'cuz he's like one of the best players in the league right now. >> all of the kids also got a pair of his new curry-1

. >> a glad to have you with us on this saturday morning. i'm chris nguyen. we start this half-hour with a quick look at the forecast. we send it over to lisa argen. lisa, air quality is a concern? >> that's right. we have patches of fog, hazy skies, and it's the ninth consecutive spare the air day today. we can't get a weather system in here to mix out the atmosphere so things are really laying stagnate. 50 in oakland. 52 san francisco, 45 half moon bay, and to give you an idea of the fog out, there the golden gate bridge, where we are looking at the north bay and the santa clara valley with the pollutants adding up today. we look for partly to mostly cloudy skies with hazy sun at times.

upper 50s from san francisco. 61 in oakland, 62 in san jose. and a few subtle changes for the second half of your weekend. could be another spare the air day but we are looking out in the extended outlook that does show the possibility of rain. we will talk about it coming up. chris. >> lisa, thank you. 5:31 is the time. golden gate bridge is officially close today drivers this weekend. crews are working to install a movable median that officials say will help prevent head-on collisions. abc7 news reporter nick smith is live at the golden gate bridge toll plaza this morning. nick, it's great to have you with us. >> chris, it is good to be here. you know i love the morning show but i have to tell you this is the first time i've been able to dance in traffic here on the golden gate bridge. that's because it's closed. right now it's only open to the commuter buses and pedestrian traffic using the actual footbridge. take a look at some of the video when they shut it down last night. we were here and our cameras were rolling.

they started shutting the golden gate bridge down late last night so workers can install a movable median barrier designed to prevent head-on collisions. it's part of an effort to increase safety. if everything goes according to plan the bridge is scheduled to reopen to all traffic in time for the monday morning commute. >> there's a little wiggle room in the schedule." not a lot. so things have to go very smoothly from the very beginning. then once all of those pieces are in place, we will bring the big barrier transfer machines, the skipper trucks out and those have to make several passes to get the positioning and the tensionening of the barrier just right : do created movable barrier concrete blocks installed by pins will be installed along the are bridge and on the approach section. highway 101 north section of the bridge. to con figure it, the 32-foot tall one-moot wide barrier will be moved using trucks.

i can tell that you officials tell me they will have an update for us in about 30 minutes, and around 10:00 this morning they are going to actually take me on a tour to show me how this will move back and forth and reduce some of the lanes of traffic. right now i can tell you the only people out here are construction crews me and carle the fog. that's all right. we will keep an eye on things and provide you with another update in about 30 minutes. >> mr. nick showing us is moves this morning. nick, thank you very much. businesses are brace fourth the impact of the closer, but how they are affected depends on which side of the bridge they are on. in south so -- they are down 30% for reservationings. and four times the number of ferries will be running to make up for the closer. >> more dog owners, more traffic, we will be down here. >> one guy told us he's going to be hosting a "stay in marin"

developing news, a search is underway for suspects as four people were shot to death in san francisco. it happened around 10:00 last night in the city's haze valley neighborhood. police say four males inside a car were shot and again all of them died. police say more than 10 shots were fired and right now they are talking to anyone who may have heard or seen anything. >> i am quite surprised because of the area. we have restaurants and a residential area so you never would imagine there would be a shooting there. >> police say they are still looking into the motive for the shooting. police are searching for an older man who has been missing since yesterday. take a look at your screen. police say 71-year-old timothy james was last seen on shad dock avenue around 4:30 in the afternoon. james is described as a white man with white hair.

he's 5'6" tall with a thin build. he was last seen wearing a gold button-up shirt with a dragon design and blue jeans. a "7 on your side" story about a marin county woman who fell victim to a ruthless scam artist just before christmas hit a nerve with people here in the bay area. it touched their hearts so deeply they just had to help her. here's michael finney with a big surprise that gave her story a great ending. >> this is the story that touched the hearts of so many. carolyn collins in her room at this assisted living home received a shocking phone call. >> i'm a place -- policeman. my name is zach miller, and you are under arrest. there's a warrant out for your arrest. >> the man said carolyn failed to show up for jury duty. she had to pay $500 right away sore she would go to jail. >> i was stunned. i believed him. he was a policeman. i trust policemen. >> the man ordered her to go to

her bank withdraw $500, and load it on to a green dot money card. he stayed on the line the whole time as carolyn walked to her bank then to cvs to buy the money card. >> he told me don't tell people why you are taking this money out. the bank and going to cvs. don't tell them at cvs or they will have you arrested. >> when she got home the man told her to scrape the silver lining off the money cashed. >> there's a number there and i want you to give me that number. >> she did. and the crook used it to steal all the money loaded on the card. it wasn't until later that a friend told her that was no cop, it was a scam. she had just lost all her savings. >> i live on ssi, and i don't have that much money at my fingertips. >> the story came on about carolyn and how she had been taken for $500 by the person. it really annoyed me. it actually it ageerd me. >> these two felt so outraged he

vowed to help her restore her savings. >> i just wanted her to know that despite all the not so desirable people that are out there in this world, there's a lot of people who do care. >> i felt really sad and i tired up. i was really moved about what really happened to her. >> this woman of san jose contacted me asked how she could help. and offers poured in from all over the bay area. paul ray in san jose wrote, my heart was broken when she said she's been saving and living on ssi. i want to give her a 500-dollar gift. one in san francisco said it's so sad that there are folks out there who will would do such a thing. and ray in santa rosa writes i'm not a wealthy man but i would like to donate to resurrect her faith in human kind. donations flowed in. legal aid of marin collected the money on carolyn's behalf and today i surprised her with a

>> because of the drought large bay area businesses and other organizations are under orders to cut their water usage by 10%. but this morning abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez said san francisco unified has gone well beyond that goal. >> public schools in san francisco with large green areas and gardens have been working on water conservation for the past several years. to do that they have had to find ways to be more sustainable. >> the system has drip irrigation which is really the way to go. but if it's leaking, you are not saving any water. >> students at lincoln high have helped to replace the drip

irrigation lines for their garden. lincoln and other high schools have also shortened the watering time for their football fields. rick is the lead gardner and oversees the landscaping at all 135 schools within the district. >> we ran irrigation tests and readjusted heads replaced heads, changed nozzles. >> the district also has she's rainwater systems at roughly 30 of their schools. the recent rains filled the cistern at jefferson elementary and the water is used for the garden. those efforts have paid off. in san francisco the san francisco public utilities commission told all big organizations, if you want to continue to use water for landscaping purposes, you have to reduce consumption by 10%. since that mandate schools in san francisco have dropped water consumption by 43%. the district is doing more than just conserving wet out in their

picking up on the cloud cover. we are looking at a weak system to the south of us. right now it's some fog that we are dealing with. in napa, santa rosa and also san francisco. no delays yet here but that could change with the cloudy skies. then a hazy afternoon on tap. 50 oakland. good morning morgan hill, 46 for you. 46 along the coast with 48 in can carlos and a foggy roof camera shows how still the atmosphere is. very little mixing. none at all with high pressure overhead. that's why we have another spare the air day. temperature dropped to 39 in napa with some fog up toward santa rosa, as well. 47 by the delta. mid-40s concord and 48 livermore. it's a little cooler this morning out toward concord. 5 degrees cooler with 2 to 3 degrees cooler compared to 24 hours ago. along the peninsula, south bay and up in napa. the 39 really bringing your temperature down to the chilly mark for sure.

the ex-moratorium camera. pretty foggy out there. we won't see much change this afternoon as the haze stays around and the unhealthy air is with us today. we could see a chance of sprinkles tomorrow from a system that will dive to the south of us. but i don't think it's enough to mix out the unhealthy air. we need a strong cold front. and it looks like the mild weather we've been having will stay with us more or less. so yesterday they were well into the upper 60s. today it should be a little cooler. final stop a desolate golden gate bridge. our spare the air includes the entire bay area but the poorest air quality will be the north bay and the santa clara valley. today you certainly can see it out there if not feel the implications of all the pollutants. with our pacific satellite picture you see the cloudiness out in the pacific. nothing really too well-defined. an area of low pressure that's going to sink to the south of us. as it does it looks like santa barbara, san luis is looking for

the pest chance for sprinkles but the counterclockwise flow will spin up more clouds and a possibility of a sprinkle or two. that's about all we can must are out of this system. another system moves in behind it and high pressure reestablishes itself for the rest of the week. but as we go through the rest of week, look at next sunday. by late friday into saturday we could see some showers around here. and although we aren't expecting much, it might indicate a pattern change and allow for a subsequent system so we can help with that. highs today across the state. dense fog in san diego. 66 later on. then the moisture from the system. 54 in yosemite with 52 in the northern sierra. highs today ranging from the upper 50s half moon bay and vallejo to 60 in napa. look for 62 san jose. and low 60s for oakland. accuweather seven-day forecast spare the air today. little change tomorrow. maybe a few sprinkles. dryer conditions with a stronger area of high pressure and offshore flow monday and tuesday.
