until the work is complete only pedestrians, cyclists and buses can cross the bridge. here's the latest on the work. the project involves placing 3500 steel clad concrete blocks to separate the north and southbound lanes. more than 80% of those blocks are now in place and bridge officials say the project is on schedule. they anticipate a first run of the zipper truck tonight the truck that places the blocks. and there have been no major traffic incidents today. cornell bernard is live now at the bridge with more on he progress. reporter: no cars on the bridge makes this a very, very quiet place tonight. but far so so good. the bridgees scheduled to re-open 'monday morning at 4:00 a.m. let's go in sky 7hd where the piece office the puzzle are in place.

restriping to the pavement hassles begun. the countdown to a safer bridge underway. >> the golden gate truly a bridge to nowhere this weekend. not a car in sight. he rode the span on his bike twice to take it in. >> it's stir reel. there's no car traffic. usually you ride across and have all the background noise. today you just hear the tourists and pedestrians and walkers and construction crews. >> sky 7hd was over the span as crews hammered the new moveable barrier into place. 1.7 miles of steel and concrete. engineers say the project is on track. >> we are on schedule and as of 3:00 p.m., we have -- we installed 10,000 linear feet of the barrier. so this is about 87% of its length. >> the barrier is designed to prevent head-on collisions. bob says it's long overdue. >> i think it's good that the barrier is being put up. surprised it took this long, but

i think a lot of things take a long time to get done. >> you can park there and walk there. >> the marina district confusion and questions. traffic control officers are very busy. >> what's the biggest question today? >> how do you go to the golden gate bridge. i say, it's closed. i didn't know that. >> it's hard to say you warrant warned. these traffic signs are virtually everywhere. detours in place. >> did you know it was closed today? >> no. no. >> all weekend. >> disappointed. >> those who ditched their cars and hikes up to the iconic span say the experience totally worth it. >> it's historical. it's phenomenal. we leave here and this is something that never happened in my time of being here. so it's great. reporter: back live on a very empty golden gate bridge tonight. there's been 1 28 head-on collisions and 16 fatilities on

the bridge since 1970. the new barrier could eliminate those altogether. traffic around the bay area not too bad. i commute on the golden gate bridge mitchell commute to san francisco takes about 3035 minutes -- 35 minutes. today's commute on the richmond san rafael bridge and bay bridge, about ten minutes longer. we're live, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> not bad at all. thank you. another option for commuters, taking a ferry or bus across the bay. some pictures for you. this is the 8:20 a.m. fer groom larkspur. ferrieses are running until 1:00 a.m. tomorrow. golden gate ferry says it has ten two and a half time the tip al demand on the line but added more than enough service to cover that. while buses are running on the regular weekend schedule. many passengers tell us they gave themselves extra time. >> i had to wake up really early to catch the bus. i was afraid it would be cried about it wasn't.

>> -- cried but it wasn't. >> buses are not running through sausolito. instead free shuttles are offer between the downthe marin city where people can catch the bus. another option is taking the bay bridge. a live look for you right now at traffic from our bay bridge toll plaza. you can see pretty slow going at this hour but also kind of typical for this hour. the westbound lanes of the bridge are typically congested on saturday afternoon, but it does appear the backup a little longer than normal. the metering lights were turn on today. a live look at the richmond san rafael bridge. no problems here right now at all. hardly any cars on the road in fact. let's take a look at live drive-time traffic. a rare sight. the purple indicating the bridge is closed, and you see the traffic trouble spots in the red there, including a portion of interstate 80 in the east bay.

nick smith spent the morning with construction crews on the golden gate judge has a closeup look at the work and what commuters can expect come monday morning. >> on monday people should go slow. >> this is the reason why. engineers are calling it the largest safety construction project the golden gate bridge has ever seen. a new $30 million moveable barrier system of high density concrete, timely pinned together, intended to reduce or eliminate crossover collisions. >> this is a great improvement and that's why we are very excited. we making a big step forward. >> a big step and for some a tight squeeze. each block is 12 inches wide, and 32 inches high. >> the center lane of the bridge is supposed to be ten feet wide but with the barrier in place it's less than nine feet. >> we're encroaching six inches into the center lane where you'll be adjacent to the barrier, and if you follow the speed limit itit won't feel

police investigating the killings of four men. they were shot to death in a storm car last night. the car was on laguna street between haith and page in hayes valley. officers trying to determine if another car that witnesses saw speeding away is linked to the shooting. >> i was good together complain about the helicopter and then i raileesed it must be something -- a crime going on or the helicopter wouldn't be here that long. they weren't just snooping. they were doing their jobs. >> police are still looking into a motive for the shooting. they say the year has had issues with gang violence. >> caltrain officials re-opened the southbound tracks near the millbrae station where a northbound train hit and killed a person this morning just after 9:00. officials stopped all cars operating in the area for more than an hour. no word on why that person was on the tracks. no one on the train was hurt. a massive maphunt and huge rallies nowed france in the aftermath of two deadly hostage standoffs.

another live look at the golden gate bridge. scheduled to be closed until 4:00 a.m. monday so crews can install a moveable median barrier. so far work is on schedule and there have been no major traffic delays. we'll have an update at 6:00 and always on twitter at abc7 bay area. a congregation in saratoga will be listening to music from a new sound board and drum set at tomorrow's service because of this generous donation to the west hope presbyterian church from a local drummer. someone stole $10,000 worth of musical equipment from the church just days before christmas, including a drum set, microphones and equalizer and mixer. church officials are very grateful for the donation since
