i'm katie marzullo. it does appear to be smooth sailing for the most part but there are those drivers who were caught offguard by the closure. cornell bernard is live on the san francisco side of the bridge with a progress check. reporter: not everybody got the e-mail on this. what we just learn the project is on track. that is really good news. to make the deadline of monday at 4:00 a.m. sky 7hd is live over the span tonight. where the work is continuing. we just learned the last barrier piece has been fitted into place. still lots of work ahead but the bridge, juan step closer to being safer. at the going bridge, a virtual ghost up to. not a car in sight. laura and jeff journey yesterday the santa clara to see it up close. >> gentlemen woke up -- we woke up and said, let's go check out the bridge. >> i was born here in san san francisco it's a great experience to see the bridge --

it's landmark and it's just amazing. >> sky 7hd was over the span as crews hammered the new moveable barrier into place. 1.7-miles of steel and concrete. engineers say the project is on track. >> we are on schedule and as of 3:00 p.m., we have -- we installed 10,000 linear feet of the barrier. so this is about 87% of its length. >> the bay area designed to prevent head-on collisions. there's been 16 fatilities since 1970. >> i think it's good that the barrier is being put up. surprise i it took this long. i think a lot of things take a long time to get done. >> you can walk there. >> in the marina, lots of confusion and questions about the bridge closure. traffic control officers had their hands full. >> what's the biggest question today? >> how due you go to the golden

gate bridge. i say, it's closed. i didn't know that. >> hard to say you weren't warned. these traffic signs are virtually everywhere. detours are in place. >> trying to see the golden gate bridge. >> did you know it was closed today? >> no. >> no. >> all weekend. >> disappointed. >> those who ditched their cars and decided to hike up to the span say the general was totally worth it. >> it's monumental. it's historical. it's phenomenal. we live here and this is something that has never happened in my time of being here so it's pretty great. reporter: back live. sky 7hd over the golden gate bridge where the last barrier has been fitted into place. what happens next? well, bridge workers have to practice moving the barriers with zipper trucks to reconfigure lanes and we're told that takes a lot of program. let's come back live at the visitor's center where the sound of silence is everywhere. with an occasional bus, though. but i do have to say no cars

makes this a very quiet place this weekend. we're live at the golden gate bridge, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> thank you. let's check some of the alternatives to get around the bridge closure. this is the bay bridge toll plaza in oakland. traffic had been slowing smoothly most of the day, but you can see for yourself right now, a lot of backup. the cash paying lanes as well as fastrak. traffic almost at a standstill there as cars approach the toll from oakland. from these bay. and at the richmond san rafael bridge toll peninsulas, should problems to report. you can see how smoothly traffic is flowing. not even that many cars on the road. our camera along 101 in san rafael shows traffic moving kind of slowly as well, but no major problems, at least they are moving. those who typically don't take interstate 80 into the city the full so many street exit is closed for a construction project. so you can still use the offramp

to exit the bay bridge, but you'll have to veer to the left and take the fremont street exit. you can see traffic backed up in the area today. the folsom and it is expected to re-open in april. >> tike a look at these maps. you can see a lot of red on the traffic map, and most of that red concentrated on the bay bridge, as you saw in the live pictures there also along the east shore freeway. so do give yourself extra time if that is your route tonight. right now the ferries from san francisco to the north bay are busier than normal. with the bridge closed people are packing on to boats to get across the winter. there are extended hours until 1:00 tomorrow morning. golden gate ferry says it is seeing two and a half times the typical demand on the larkspur line but it added service to cover that. passengers don't mind taking a weekend off from driving because that's know this will make the bridge safer. >> i think it's necessary and okay. i don't think everybody has to

come into the city every weekend. >> it was kind of fun. we went by the prison. it was interesting. and what can you do? >> bus service is the only traffic allowed on the bridge this weekend. so far, golden gate transit has not seen an uptick in passengers. here's a closer look at exactly what you can expect. once all the work is finished on monday. there will be a new $30 million moveable barrier system in place. it's made of concrete and engineers say it will reduce or eliminate head-on collisions, major safety concern on the bridge. each block is 12 inches wide and 32 inches high. it does take up slightly more room in the center lane. >> encroaching six inches into the center lane where you'll be adjacent to the barrier, and if you follow the speed limit it won't feel different.

the hayes valley neighborhood. reporter: as you can see small memorial has been set up. it popped up this morning. meanwhile, san francisco police posted this sign today, asking for help in solving this quadruple homocide. four young men were so the and killed inside a stolen black honda civic last night parked at laguna and page police say at least two people shot into the car and killed everyone inside. today inspectors from the san francisco police department have been going door-to-door, asking anyone if n this normally quiet neighborhood saw anything that might help them solve this crime. i spoke with one woman who drove by just as the victims were being shot. >> i'm at jared right now that i witnessed that. i wasn't -- i mean, i wasn't sure what it was at first, but now that i see it i'm a little freaked out. >> she also gave police details

a wok thought someone was trying to buy and sell her baby but turns out it was a giant misunderstanding. police in screech narks outside of -- covina released surveillance individualover of two men who approached the woman in a parking lat. the men are a pastor and a successful businessman who were trying to payed forward and help the woman. she took it the wrong way, got scared and called police who opened a child trafficking investigation. >> i'm trying to help somebody and then what a situation. just pulled out the $100 without thinking out of my pocket, say here you go. she say no, no, i say yes for

your child. her face was kind of shocked and then i said, i been blessed by god. >> wow. garcia called police after seeing himself on tv, and he explained what happened. detectives say his story checked out. yikes. the san diego dog owner thought all hope was lost in finding her beloved boxer who disappeared eight years ago. that was until this week. leila taylor was reunited with her dog chance on friday. chance was stolen from an out -- kennel in 2006 and was found a couple of weeks ago by san diego animal control officers. they say he was wandering the streets and was microchipped so officers scanned the chip and contacted the rightful owneres. the emotional reunification happened yesterday. she says chance was and still is her best friend. >> coming up next once abc7 news at 6:00, packing up and moving out. this beloved oakland institution has a new home tonight.

two daredevil rock climbers hoping to complete a grueling quest up the el capitan are reporting progress. tommy caldwell and santa rosa resident kevin jorgingson could complete the climb in a few days. last night kevin wrote on his pace he is still trying to scale one wall. he has had the most difficulty with the climb but is vowing not to give up. a renowned oakland watering hole is on the move literally. a moving company picked up the king fish bar located on claremont avenue in north oakland and moved i it 35 yards down the street to telegraph
