>> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks nor joining us on this sunday january 11th. let's start with a quick look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. here's live doppler hd where we have fog around the bay and patches of fog. but it is raining in santa monica. and some of these may push up to the north and get us wet in monterey. elsewhere eye the cloud cover this morning. the temperatures not as cold. mid-40s for santa rosa and napa. that's where we have the fog. 45 fremont, 46 san jose and it's another spare the air day today.

quarter mile visibility for san jose and half-mile for santa rosa, 2.5 in napa. throughout the morning hours with the cloud cover maybe a few light sprinkles and by the average we are hazy again. temperatures seasonal. we will talk about some changes which include rain in the seven-day outlook. that's coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. the longest closer in the histories of the golden gate bridge continues this morning as workers install a new median barrier system. take a live look right now at the bridge from the marin county side. the closer began at midnight friday. the span is scheduled to reopen in time for tomorrow morning's commute. i can't feel 7 news reporter nick smith is with us from the golden gate bridge with the latest. good morning there. >> good morning carolyn. i was wondering if i ran on to the middle of the highway there if you would see me from the marijuana bridge camera. but you know what? i thought the better side of me said just stand here.

the sane behind me reads closed but by this time tomorrow it should say "open" pause they tell me they are ready to open on time. heavy lifting is done. take a look at this video. we were overhead last night when engineers put the last piece in place. they even took a moment to snap a picture or two. the new barrier will recon figure the bridge to six lanes during the rush hour commute. but the chief engineer said things are ready to open on time but we want to make sure everything somewhere it should be. >> we make estimates how long it will take we are on the optimistic side of our schedule but we have to take into account any unforeseen situations because we have other work to do. so i am very happy because everything is going so well. >> last night crews had plenty of work to do, including running

the zipper truck along the barrier multiple times to position pieces correctly and create the proper tension between them. the plans are in place to move forward with the ribbon cutting ceremony later today. the new barrier is the first thing you see. but there is other work being done here at the toll plaza. in the next 30 minutes i'll tell you about some of the other things they are doing while they had an opportunity to address them with the road closer. carolyn, good morning to you and good to see you on a sunday. >> nice to see you. did you take some selfies with the bridge closed? >> oh, you know i did. you know me. typical demand on the larkspur line. for service was added to cover the demand and attention we talked to don't seem to mind taking a weekend off from driving because they know this will make the bridge safer. >> i do think it's necessary and it's okay. i don't think everybody has to do to the city every weekend. there's plenty to do on the other side. i'm from marin. >> you know, what can you do? >> bus service is the only traffic aloud on the bridge this weekend. the alternate route from marin county is eastbound 580 kay cross the bridge. and from san francisco eastbound 80 across the bay bridge to westbound 580 and then across the richmond san rafael bridge. visit us online at abc7news.com for the alternate options.

you can also download waze. it's free. overnight, five people are injured after being shot outside a san jose nightclub. it happened around 1:30 this morning on monterey street outside the fiesta nightclub. when police arrived they found four people with at least one gunshot wound and a fifth person showed up at the hospital. police say they have detained several people in connection with the shooting and are continuing to investigate. our media partner the mercury news reports r & b kris brown was at the club for a vip event when the shooting took place. san jose police are also investigating a homicide. a dead body found inside a car just after 11:00 yesterday morning on east williams court near mclaughlin avenue. officers say the man had been shot. a motive and circumstances are

not no one, and no suspects have been identified. the man's identity has not yet been released either. a troubling quadruple homicide in san francisco's hayes valley neighborhood. police are calling it gang related. and there's a message for residents in the normally quiet area. here's lisa amin gulezian with the story. >> it's a small reminder of the the -- what happened on laguna street. four people were shot to death. >> it's scary because that doesn't happen around here very often. >> it it was a targeted attack on four young men that police say were in a stolen honda civic. one police officer said he heard about 50 gunshots being fired into the stolen car that was double parked here in the middle of the street. you see all the broken glass on the ground. by the time help arrived, three were dead it inside the car.

the fourth died soon after. according to police, the shootings were gang relate the. kim barnett said one of the four killed was her 21-year-old nephew, manual o'neal. she called him a smart boy who made a bad decision. >> he chose to get in that vehicle with his friends. >> inspectors went door to door asking for help solving the case. they even posted signs in the neighborhood. this witness told police what she saw. >> i was rate next to it and i didn't know where the bullets were coming from or going. yeah really freakky. >> two bullets bent into a nearby business and now police are preparing for the possibility of gang retaliation. extra patrols will be in hayes valley this weekend and residents don't know what to make of it. >> this won't even come into play. >> police have made no arrests. in san francisco, lisa amin

gulezian abc7 news. a motorcyclist is dead, a pedestrian hurt this morning after an accident in san francisco's civic center neighborhood. it happened just after 5:00 last night near vanness avenue. the motorcyclist died at the scene. the car's driver was not hurt but a pedestrian did suffer nonlife-threatening injuries. san francisco police are investigating a body found on the north side of lake merced yesterday afternoon. the instructor of a crew team practicing in the lake spotted the body around 3:00 and called police. fire crews arrived, pulled the body from the lake. the victim has not been identified. kaiser permanente are preparing for a strike starting tomorrow. they will walk the picket line for at least a week. they are represented by the

national union of healthcare workers and they are leading the strike. they saidizer needs to hire more mental health workers because current staffing levels are putting patients at risk. izer said it has improved services and accuses the union of using the strike for part of it's negotiate'g for a better contract. they were celebrating the upcoming opening of the ucf medical center at mission bay. former 49ers joe montana was there and along with country music star tim mcgraw. san francisco mayor edelman lee and house majority leader nancy pelosi. the $1.5 billion hospital is a more upgrade for ucf. >> it's not only san francisco's, but people throughout the cities in

out. the irs sends out officials notice necessary the mail to people who fully owe money. >> two men are free climbing a vertical walk space and they have now cleared one of the most difficult stretches. after two days of failed attempts and waiting. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> it's getting pretty rowdy. >> a glimpse into life on the mountain. >> there's this crazy windstorm happening. >> 30 year old kevin of santa rosa made a major move reaching a razor harp hold that had eluded him. he's one of two climbers who has attempt today reach the 3,000-foot summit from the vertical wall. the men are relying only on their strength and dexterity. they are two weeks in and they are believed to be the first to do it.

livermore. but santa rosa, half-mile, 2 1/2 in napa. this morning navigating should be extra tricky but about the afternoon the clouds do clear. here's a look at sfo where things are quiet and another spare the air day with the worst air quality in the north bay. but the forecast in the next four days calls for medium air quality. we should get a little bit of wind in here. the high pressure weather maker still with be with us and with hazy skies again today the mild pattern takes hold throughout much of the upcoming work week but we do have a chance of rain. in the north bay it looks like that may be by friday night and the rest of the area could get wet as well. eats too far out to say with certainty. there's the california system. through the bay area we will see partly cloudy skies today with temperatures pretty seasonal. but as we take you out to the 17th and 18th, notice

and her husband would attend a sales pitch in a nearby office and consider joining a travel club. >> they promised us that we were going to have the best vacation at the cheapest price we could ever believe. they could get a five star hotel room for $45 a night. we could get airfare $100 round trip. >> she forked over $6,000 for a lifetime membership but she was never able to book a discounted trip and when she went back to the office to complain, the company had disappeared. consumer reports has problems with travel clubs have been found throughout the country. >> the attorneys general of several states have gone after at least six of these clubs obtaining settlements from $50,000 to $7 million and in at least one case an owner was sentenced to prison. >> the scheme she fell victim to had many. red flags you should watch out to. an offer like the postcard promising free air fare, a high

. >> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi carolyn. good morning. it's pretty foggy out there. more fog than we saw yesterday. although it is another spare the air day. live doppler 7hd showing the clouds around. but unfortunately rain is falling in southern california, not northern california. so we have areas of rain from bakersfield to santa barbara, los angeles. could see a few sprinkles around monterey. but overall temperatures very similar to yesterday. low 40s in the north bay with 50s closer to the bay. although this is the difference. a quarter mile visibility in san jose. three quarters up in napa and just a half-mile in santa rosa. more fog out toward the east bay

teenagers from starting. it's called vaporing. exhaling and inhaling vapors of nicotine from a battery-powered device. it has the health department very concerned. >> contains heavy metals like cigarettes do, contains carcinogens like cigarettes do, and most importantly it contains nicotine. >> the health department is posting hundreds of billboards like these on muni buss and bart trains to educate the public. former smoker, shauna anderson, said e-cigarettes helped ween her off her camels. >> the waste you put it in your body and stuff like this is a little less of a toxic waste dump. for me i don't care. >> last year san francisco supervisors passed an ordinance regulating e-cigarettes, the famous traditional smokes.

morning. thanks for joining us for the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a look at the golden gate bridge from the marin county side. rather foggy right there. it's closed, as you know, to all but pedestrian bicyclists and transit buses this weekend while a median barrier is installed. we will have a live update on the progress of that work coming up in about 15 minutes. let's check out sports. the nfl divisional playoffs wrap-up today at 10:05 this morning. the cowboys battle the packers at lambeau field. and the colts face the broncos in denver at 1:30 this afternoon. last night the seahawks advanced to the nfc championship game. here's rick quan, he has the highlights had this morning's sports. >> good morning. carolina went just seven games during the regular season but for three quarters gave the super bowl champs seattle all they could handle.

the panthers came out throwing but this cam newton pass will be picked off by richard sherman. believe it or not, it's his first playoff career interception. and russell wilson to baldwin. 7-0, seahawks. carolina was not intimidated. newton with the quick toss to benjamin. he takes the hit but hangs on for the core. about five minutes left in the half. seattle comes up with the big play. and jermaine curse he's gone 63 yards. 14-10 at the break. after a scoreless third quarter, the seahawks finally broke it open. the tight end luke wilson made it 24-10. they then put the game away as newton is going to be picked off by kam chancellor. he has nothing but green in front of him. chancellor brings it back 90 yards for the touchdown. so seattle is going back to the nfc championship game for a second straight year. 31-17 was the final. the seahawks will now play

either green bay or dallas for the nfc championship. in the afc the patriots got by baltimore but to do so they had to be the first team in playoff history to come back twice. and new england is so touch to beat. temperatures in the teens yesterday. after an early 14-point lead the ravens went back up by 14 in the third. he goes in untouched. patriots were down, but not out. tom brady with the dart to his tight end rob broncos -- bronkowski. he finds him wide open. tied the game at 28. after the ravens kicked a field goal brady comes through again. this time a perfect toss to rafael. his 46th postseason touchdown pass makes him the all-time leader passing joe in the.

the rangers won 13 of their last 15. that's sports for sunday morning. i'm rick quan, she you again tonight at 5:00. well, it's raining but in southern california. >> yeah. where they say it never rains >> yeah, and we need it. >> light rain, but it's just to the south of here. northern california, we have the fog from santa rosa to salinas and maybe monterey may pick up a few light sprinkles. but it's an area of low pressure that's split from the main branch of the jet stream. that's why the energy is headed to the south here from santa barbara through bakersfield. looking at a few light showers, hot springs and san diego. they have the light rain. we have fog. and in between maybe a few sprinkles here and there. look at san jose right now. looking at anywhere from a quarter mile visibility through milpitas and even sunnyvale looking pretty foggy. back in san francisco

temperatures are mild in the low 50s. oakland 50 right now. no problems at the airport. but that could change. 45 in san carlos, 46 with the fog in san jose and 46 on the coast. looks like coastal clouds will linger along the shoreline today. and fog up in santa rosa, napa, novato. up on the delta, 45. a little cooler in livermore. here's a look at the fog. the visibility in miles from san jose that might be a little per, 2 1/2 miles by the delta down to a quarter mile napa and half-mile up in santa rosa. so do take it easy. it will be after 10:00 when we improve things in terms of visibility, but then the skies will remain hazy. here's the air quality forecast the next four days. looks like today should be the worst day in the north bay and the santa clara valley. then we look for high pressure, even though it's a stagnate air mass. we will get a little more wind and it will be a new parcel of

air that moves in overhead. although it's not the strong cold front we hoped for we have rain come next weekend in should help clean out the atmosphere. hazy skies, mild and quiet right on through the middle of the week, even toward thursday. and then we will look for our next chance of rain. it could be as early as friday in the north bay. and it doesn't look like it's going to be as heavy in the south bay but still seven days out. here's the area of low pressure bringing the moisture in southern california at the bay area. we are starting out foggy and then the clouds will return and we will see a return to seasonal weather. with the rain in southern california mid-60s there. 52 yosemite. up in the northern portion of the state looking dry and quiet with 50 degrees in lake tahoe. right now 30 in truckee. the long-range forecast shows this piece of energy continuing to stay together right on through friday and saturday. so that will be some good news. highs today around the bay, 59 in richmond.

58 in oakland. with low 60s santa rosa. 57 san francisco and 62 in morgan hill. the accuweather seven-day forecast spare the air today and then we are looking at more dry sunny, mild weather. it looks like thursday should be the warmest day with mid-60s. then look for increasing clouds and hopefully some rain late friday into saturday. so still above average in terms of rainfall, but, you know, we are lagging far behind with our drought. >> yeah. and we are getting tired of all the spare the air days, as well. >> exactly. >> all right. thank you lisa. there is a new exercise program aimed with patients with parkinson's disease and it's having a positive impact. it's easing some of the symptoms of parkinson's disease with a workout that might surprise you. abc7 news anchor ama daetz has the details. >> most boxers at san francisco polk street gym are training to fight opponents in the ring but a few are training to fight an
