>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday january 11th. let's start with a quick look at the whether from meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. plenty of dense fog down to salinas. it's not everywhere. we are looking at rain in southern california. unfortunately this rain will not reach us. maybe mist and drizzle around monterey. but a closer look at the fog shows the quarter mile visibility over in milpitas. a little better by mountain view. you head up toward the north bay, the delta very, very foggy for santa rosa and napa. so right now sfo doing fine but we are looking at mountain view

2.5-mile visibility. mile and a quarter by the delta and six miles in oakland and hayward. we will keep you updated on navigating through the fog but we will also talk about the clouds clearing on out by the afternoon hours bringing more sunshine with hazy conditions spare the air and temperature forecast coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. being. >> the longest closer of the golden gate bridge continues this morning as workers install a new median barrier. we have a live look right now at the bridge from the marin county side. the closer began at midnight friday. the span is schedule today reopen in time for tomorrow morning's commute. abc7 news reporter nick smith joining us live now from the san francisco side of the bridge. who are you talking to nick? what's the latest? >> i was just talking to chp. i wanted you to see them but they didn't want to be on camera. people have obeyed the traffic

signals and that's one of the things we had to be concern about yesterday. my colleague talked to people who honestly did not know the bridge was closing even though we've been talking about it for weeks. they weren't paying attention they didn't know or they were visiting. we spoke to ot only the golden gate bridge about that but chp about redirecting the traffic and how people were being affected. but all of that is nothing they need to worry about because by this time tomorrow morning everything will be back to normal. take a look at the video we shot yesterday afternoon. sky 7 was over the scene. the last place was put in place and engineers took an opportunity to snap a picture or two. the project chief engineer told me things are on track to open in time for tomorrow, but they still have a few things they need to do. >> you see when we make estimates how long it will take, we are on the optimistic side of our schedule. but we still have to take into

consideration any unforeseen situation because we have other work to do. so i am very happy because everything is going so well. >> last night, crews ran the zipper truck along the barrier multiple times to position the various pieces correctly and to create the proper tension between them. earlier someone asked me if the zipper truck makes a lot of sound and i told them it doesn't make a lot of sound. we heard it going back and forth. it's not a sound that you would necessarily be aware of. but it moves very slow. so it's not anything you need to be concerned about because you will definitely have plenty of time to see the bright yellow truck coming in your rear-view mirror. and they also have plans to operate it during times when there is lower traffic flow. so you don't need to worry about seeing that zipper truck moving right at the height of the 5:00 a.m. morning commute. at the golden gate bridge, nick

smith, abc7 news. >> there probably will be a learn curve there though. thank you nick. well, the ferries from san francisco to the north bay were busier than normal yesterday. golden gate ferry said it's seeing two and a half times the typical demand on the larkspur line. for service was added to cover the demand and attention we talked to don't seem to mind taking a weekend off from driving because they know this will make the bridge safer. >> i do think it's necessary and it's okay. i don't think everybody has to do to the city every weekend. there's plenty to do on the other side. i'm from marin. >> you know, what can you do? >> bus service is the only traffic aloud on the bridge this weekend. the alternate route from marin county is eastbound 580 across the richmond bridge to westbound 80. and from san francisco it's eastbound 80 across the bay bridge to westbound 580. and across the richmond-san

investigating a homicide. a dead body found inside a car just after 11:00 yesterday morning on east williams court near mclaughlin avenue. officers say the man had been shot. the motive and circumstances are not known, and no suspects have been identified. the man's identity has not yet been released either. a troubling quadruple homicide in san francisco's hayes valley neighborhood. police are calling it gang-related. and there's a warning for residents in the normally quiet area. here's lisa amin gulezian with the story. it's a small, but painful reminder of the violence that erupted on leguma street. this is in honor of four people who were shot to death. >> it's scary because that doesn't happen around here very often. >> what happened was a targeted attack on the four young men who police say were in a stolen honda civic.

>> one witness said he heard about 50 gunshots being fired into the stolen car that was double parked here in the middle of the street. you see all the broken glass on the ground. by the time help arrived, three were already dead it inside the car. the fourth died soon after. according to police, the shootings were gang-related. kim barnett said one of the four killed was her 21-year-old nephew, manuel o'neal. she called him a smart boy who made a bad decision. >> he chose to get in that vehicle with his friends. >> inspectors went door to door asking for help in solving the case. they even posted signs in the neighborhood. this witness told police what she saw. >> i was right next to it, and i didn't know where the bullets were coming from or going. yeah, really freaky. >> two bullets went into a nearby business and now police are preparing for the possibility of gang retaliation. extra patrols will be in hayes valley this weekend and residents don't know what to make of it.

>> who knows what will happen or if anything will happen. i don't think you can walk around scared. >> it may not even come into play at all. >> police have made no arrests. in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. a motorcyclist is dead, a pedestrian hurt this morning after an accident in san francisco's civic center neighborhood. it happened just after 5:00 last night near vanness avenue and mcallister street. witness say the motorcyclist sideswiped this black lexus. the motorcyclist died at the scene. the car's driver was not hurt but a pedestrian did suffer nonlife-threatening injuries. san francisco police are investigating a body found on the north side of lake merced yesterday afternoon. the instructor of a crew team practicing in the lake spotted the body around 3:00 and called police. fire crews arrived, pulled the body from the lake. the victim has not been identified.

kaiser permanente is preparing for a statewide strike by mental health workers starting tomorrow. they will walk the picket line for at least a week. they are represented by the national union of healthcare workers and they are leading the strike. they said kaiser needs to hire more mental health workers because current staffing levels are putting patients at risk. kaiser said it has improved services and accuses the union of using the strike as part of its negotiating strategy for a better contract >> dozens of big name performers athletes and politicians were out last night in mission bay celebrating the upcoming opening of the ucf medical center of mission bay. former 49ers joe montana was ronny lott was there, along with country music star tim mcgraw. san francisco mayor ed lee and house majority leader nancy pelosi. the $1.5 billion hospital is a

finishing. >> he's so close to it, we just all want to be here this morning. we're extremely proud of him. katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> they hope the two men will reach the top by midweek. and here's a note, although they aren't using climbing gear, they are using safety gear to prevent a deadly fall. lisa argen is here now talking about maybe some rain in the forecast. >> yeah. the fog has gotten much worse and the national weather service has issued a dense fog advisory for north bay valley, santa clara valley and around salinas. live doppler 7hd the highlighted areas are gilroy and 101 and the north bay is where it is particularly foggy. the last report san jose just an eighth of a mile visibility. so some railroad dense fog that goes all the way down along the central coast. east bay valleys right now not doing too bad, as well as sfo. would you believe no delays there. here's a closer look where the fog is around 680 101 fremont,

also up in the north bay from petaluma, santa rosa, over toward the delta, napa, and about a quarter mile visibility or less highway 5 in sacramento. rain in southern california. in fact heavier rain in the interior valleys around bakersfield, highway 5 and very light rain from santa barbara and los angeles. on and off rain. here's another look at our own local foggy spots. san jose at an eighth mile. a half-mile up in santa rosa quart mile napa, and the rest of the bay is not as good as it was earlier. the fog is with us this morning as high pressure still over the northern portion of the state. very little wind and temperature and dewpoint spread. not much of it. you see the trees with no movement here from our roof camera. 51 san francisco. san carlos, good morning, 45. mid-40s from san jose, morgan hill and half moon bay. looks like some of the clouds will hang around half moon bay

today, keeping it one of the cooler locations. and more changes ahead for you along the coast for the upcoming work week. emeryville, it's foggy and 43 with low clouds along the coast and just mid-level clouds here. santa rosa 43, as well as the delta and livermore. and the final look at sfo where you can see it a little more than in the other spots. you can see the poor air quality. the santa clara valley. the forecast for the days ahead just a little bit better. we need a good weather system to come in and mix out this stagnate air. we do have a cold front on the way later on in the week. hazy start again today. a mild and quiet weather pattern right on through thursday. then we will see some rain. it may not be widespread all the way down to the central coast and it could favor the north bay but it's still a long ways out. right now you see the clear sky off the coast and the rain in southern california where the northern portion of the state

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn hi everyone. we have a dense fog advisory until 9:00 for the north bay interior valleys. also parts of santa clara valley, including san jose, down through northern and southern salinas valley. you can see monterey looking foggy. we go for a closer look around san jose, highway 101 looks like right on to 1:00 you will see reduced visibility, less than an eighth mile. and the north bay you see from petaluma over toward napa and further through i-5 and the airport, very foggy conditions. in southern california it's the rain they are worried about this morning. just light rain, santa barbara bakersfield. you see the northern edge. and maybe some sprinkles for

monterey. but for the bay area it's the early morning fog, afternoon haze, and the tenth consecutive spare the air day. you see at the coast there's seven mile visibility, ten mile at sfo so no delays at sfo. we will talk about the specifics coming up. carolyn. >> all right lisa. thank you. >> by this time tomorrow the golden gate bridge should be open for traffic. it's been closed since midnight friday to install a new median barrier to prevent head-on collision. here's a live look of the golden gate bridge from the marin county side. abc7 news reporter nick smith is joining us from the san francisco side of the span with the latest. how is it going there nick? >> it's going well carolyn. we just started to see the first group of runners to move through. they open the gate at like 6:00 a.m. so bikers and runners take that opportunity to cross the bridge and get in their morning

workout. if you look over my shoulder you see the zipper truck. that's the new things people will have to look out for because the truck will be moving up and down the lanes. and it takes up a lane itself as it increases and moves the configuration around. take a look at this video. we were over the area last night as they put the last piece in place. crews took a picture or two to show off their fine work because this is history in the making. the new barrier will recon figure the bridge to six lanes during rush hour commute. the new barrier is the first thing you will see but there is other work being done. >> we completed installation of new crush atennuators here at the toll plaza. we completed priming the new tollbooth. tollbooth number 8, which is a new follow and wide tollbooth. it will allow us to allow for

the passage of the wide trucks and other oversized vehicles. >> last night crews had plenty of work to do, including running the zipper truck along the barrier multiple times to position the individual barrier pieces. and create the proper tension between them. teams will have to familiarize themselves with all the aspects of using the zipper truck on the golden gate bridge roadway in day and night conditions. and i can tell you the only thing out here with me right now are runners bikers and i did speak with the chief engineer, eva bauer. eva told me the guys and girls have to get used to operating the truck in all kinds of conditions and it's absolutely imperative that drivers using the bridge tomorrow during the morning commute take their time because there will be a new lane configuration. now coming up today at nine i will have the opportunity to

it's called vaping. exhaling and inhaling vapors of nicotine from a battery-powered device. it has the health department very concerned. >> it contains heavy metals like cigarettes do, contains carcinogens like cigarettes do and most importantly, it contains nicotine. >> the health department is posting hundreds of billboards like these on muni buss and bart trains to educate the public. former smoker, shauna anderson visiting statey vaping in oakland, said e-cigarettes helped ween her off her camels. >> cigarettes are a toxic waste dump that you put in your body and cigarettes like this is a little less of a toxic waste dump. for me, i don't care. >> last year san francisco supervisors passed an ordinance regulating e-cigarettes, the famous traditional smokes. sponsor eric is especially concerned about the thousands of teenagers lured by the

here around san jose milpitas and as you go to the north, not much better. from petaluma, up through santa rosa napa, and then it extends through sacramento i-5. look at the activity in southern california. it's not fog. rainy from bakersfield. and santa barbara. not a lot happening in los angeles. but rain is had the forecast throughout the day today, throughout the southern california and san diego area. but for the bay area we are plagued with low clouds, a stagnate air mass and another spare the air day. most of the fog around the perimeter. sfo, believe it or not, is doing just fine and a little fog toward livermore. we will look for it to improve around 10:00. we are left with sunny skies and still poor air quality today. here's the view from mt. tam. can you make out the fog from below? it's there. the official sunrise about 30 minutes away. 51 here in san francisco. 45 in san jose with all that fog, half moon bay 46. the coastal clouds will hang

along the shoreline. it should be cooler at the shoreline today and we will have more sunshine as this fog -- about the midmorning hours. the east bay camera, you see from vollmer peak all the fog. look at napa. dropped to 48. 46 concord and a chilly start no livermore. heading out early this morning do take your time. it's foggy and it's cool. sfo, though, no problems so far and we look for the visibility once again north of the golden gate and the santa clara valley to just be the worst around the bay with the hazy conditions. we will still have dry conditions the beginning of the week monday, tuesday and wednesday. but with a little bit of wind it looks like the atmosphere should be just a tad better. here's sutro. you can't even see the city beneath because of the low fog. hazy again today and mild and quiet weather pattern right through thursday.

but then it looks like by friday we will have a chance of rain into next saturday. here's a look at the radar and satellite composite. high pressure off the coast. that's going to build in, and there's the rain. southern california maybe some sprinkles up through monterey. but we are looking at this system to also bring some higher elevation snow. 7500 feet for the southern sierra and another system behind that one could bring this snow to lake tahoe tomorrow. next chance of rain comes friday into saturday, and then we will be looking at this moving into the mountains by next sunday. 59 vallejo, 52 san jose, 57 in the city. and the accuweather seven-day forecast dry and mild. unfortunately right after the middle of the week, and hopefully we are getting rain next friday and saturday. >> all right. fingers crossed. let's check out sports.

the nfl divisional playoffs wrap-up today at 10:05 this morning. the cowboys battle the packers at lambeau field. and the colts face the broncos in denver at 1:30 this afternoon. last night the seahawks advanced to the nfc championship game. here's rick quan, he has the highlights had this morning's sports. >> good morning. carolina won just seven games during the regular season but for three quarters gave the super bowl champs seattle all they could handle. the panthers came out throwing but this cam newton pass will be picked off by former stanford player richard sherman. believe it or not, it's his first playoff career interception. and russell wilson to baldwin. 7-0, seahawks. carolina was not intimidated. newton with the quick toss to calvin benjamin. he takes the hit but hangs on for the score. about five minutes left in the half. seattle comes up with the big play. and jermaine curse, he's gone 63 yards. 14-10 at the break. after a scoreless third quarter, the seahawks finally broke it open.

rolled to the tight end luke wilson made it 24-10. they then put the game away as newton is going to be picked off by kam chancellor. he has nothing but green in front of him. chancellor brings it back 90 yards for the touchdown. so seattle is going back to the nfc championship game for a second straight year. 31-17 was the final. the seahawks will now play either green bay or dallas for the nfc championship. in the afc, the patriots got by baltimore, but to do so they had to be the first team in nfl history to come back twice in the playoffs. and new england is so touch to beat. temperatures in the teens yesterday. after an early 14-point lead the ravens went back up by 14 in the third. he goes in untouched. the patriots were down, but not out. tom brady with the dart to his tight end rob bronkowski. he finds him wide open. tied the game at 28.

after the ravens kicked a field goal, brady comes through again. this time a perfect toss to rafael. his 46th postseason touchdown pass makes him the all-time pass makes him the all-time leader, passing joe montana.. placco goes for the pom. picked off in the end zone. new england will play either the broncos or colts for the afc title. don't forget in college football it's oregon verses ohio state for the national championship monday night. >> it's a 5:30 kickoff on espn and on the watchespn app. >> the sharks played host to the red hot rangers last night. joe thornton was back in the lineup after his shoulder injury dan boyle missed the last six games with san jose. got a nice ovation. and he scores his 14th goal of the year. up 2-0.
