t . >> good morning, everyone i'm carolyn tyler. thanks nor joining us on this sunday january 11th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn we have fog all around the area and the senate weather service extended the dense fog advisory until 11:00 in the south bay. san jose you haven't seen visibility for the last eighth of a mile. here we are a little closer there. 2 1/2 miles san carlos airport one and a half miles in oakland

so it's foggy there. and concord, you have fog but at least it's four mile visibility. same with livermore. less than a quarter for santa rosa and napa. the southern portion of california dealing with rain. flooding around bakersfield. another hazy afternoon for us and the fog lifts at 11:00. we will see sunshine today, upper 50s to low 60s. we will talk about a little bit better air quality and rain that's all included in the next seven days. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. longest closer in the history of the golden gate bridge continues this morning as workers install a new median barrier. here's a look right now at the shrouded in fog bridge from the marin county side. the span is scheduled to reopen in time for tomorrow morning's commute. abc7 news reporter nick smith joins us now on the san francisco side. nick, what's the word on the

progress? >> right now the word on the progress is all good. carolyn, i just spoke to one of the chief engineers and he told me the only thing they have left to do are two pieces of information to take away from this. they have it remove the metal casings that once held the metal pylons. those still need to come out but it's not are imperative before they open the bridge. it means a lane closer or two down the line. and, two the operators that need to use the zipper trucks every day still have not had a chance to operate those. everyone else had been assigned everyone else operating the trucks have been those are the actual company that makes them. take a look at some of the videos we shot last night. as soon as they close the bridge, our sky 7hd was over the scene. we were there to capture them putting the last piece in place and engineers even snapping a picture or two proud of their work. the project chief engineer told

me things are on track to open in time tore tomorrow but there's still a little bit of work to do. >> you see, when we make estimates how long it will take, we are on the optimistic side of our schedule. but we still have to take into consideration any unforeseen situation because we have other work to do. so i am very happy because everything is going so well. >> late last night crews had plenty of work do, including running the zipper truck along the barrier multiple times to position the barrier pieces correctly and to create the proper tension between them. the crews are extremely pleased with the progress they have made and they tell me all they have left to do is make sure the team at golden gate transit has an opportunity to operate the zipper truck, do a little practice, practice the tension practice the spacing. but all is clear for an easy

commute if people slow down carolyn, tomorrow morning. >> and they are going to need to do that, nick, because it's going to be a bit of a learning curve for motorists, as well. >> absolutely. you know we will be here tomorrow morning live starting at 4:30 a.m.. you can join christian eric and me. we will do live reports talking about the progress and reminding drivers it is a new configuration so take your time. >> good advice. the ferries from san francisco to the north bay were busier than normal yesterday. you can imagine with the bridge closed. the golden gate ferry said it's seen two and a half times the typical line on one line. more than enough service was added to cover it. passengers we talked to, though, don't mind taking a weekend off from driving because they know this will make the bridge safer. >> i do think it's necessary and it's okay. i don't think everybody has to do to the city every weekend. there's plenty to do on the other side. i'm from marin.

r & b singer chris brown was at the club for a vip event when the shooting took place. san jose police are also investigating a homicide. a dead body found inside a car just after 11:00 yesterday morning on east williams court near mclaughlin avenue. officers say the man had been shot. the motive and circumstances are not known, and no suspects have been identified. the man's identity has not yet been released either. the injuries are not considered life-threatening. the police have taken several people into custody for questioning and they are continuing to investigate. >> san jose police are also investigating a homicide. a dead body found inside a car just after 11:00 yesterday morning on east williams court near mclaughlin avenue. officers say the man had been shot. the motive and circumstances are not no one, and no suspects have been identified. the man's identity has not yet been released. a troubling quadruple homicide in san francisco's hayes valley neighborhood. police are calling it gang-related. and there's a warning for residents in the normally quiet area. here's lisa amin gulezian with

the story. >> reporter: it's a small, but painful reminder of the violence that erupted on laguna street. this is in honor of four people who were shot to death. >> it's scary because that doesn't happen around here very often. >> what happened was a targeted attack on the four young men who police say were in a stolen honda civic. >> one witness said he heard about 50 gunshots being fired into the stolen car that was double parked here in the middle of the street. you see all the broken glass on the ground. by the time help arrived, three were already dead it inside the car. the fourth died soon after. according to police, the shootings were gang-related. kim barnett said one of the four killed was her 21-year-old nephew, manuel o'neal. she called him a smart boy who made a bad decision. >> he chose to get in that vehicle with his friends. >> inspectors went door to door

asking for help in solving the case. they even posted signs in the neighborhood. this witness told police what she saw. >> i was right next to it, and i didn't know where the bullets were coming from or going. yeah, really freaky. >> two bullets went into a nearby business and now police are preparing for the possibility of gang retaliation. extra patrols will be in hayes valley this weekend and residents don't know what to make of it. >> who knows what will happen or if anything will happen. i don't think you can walk around scared. >> it may not even come into play at all. >> police have made no arrests. in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> this morning kaiser permanente is preparing for a state-wide strike by mental health workers. kaiser employees will walk the picket line starting tomorrow for at least a week. the therapists and psychologists and social workers ripped by the

national union of healthcare workers are leading the strike. they said kaiser needs to hire more mental health workers because current staffing levels are putting patients at risk. but kaiser said it has improved services and accuses the union of using the strike as part of their negotiating strategy for a better contract. better big name performers, politicians and athletes were out last night in mission bay celebrating the opening of the new ucf medical center at mission bay. former 49ers joe montana was ronny lott was there, along with country music star tim mcgraw. san francisco mayor ed lee and house majority leader nancy pelosi. the $1.5 billion hospital is a upgraded, more modern facility for ucf, replacing the old one. >> it benefits not only

people report getting calls from a 202 area code. the caller says they work for the fbi and you are unpaid taxes. michael finney has reported on these typesn of calls in the past. police say do not give out any personal information, just hang out. the irs sends out officials notices in the mail to people to people who actually owe money. >> now to yosemite park where two men are going where no man has gone before. the two men are free climbing a vertical walk space and they have now cleared one of the most difficult stretches after two days of failed attempts and waiting. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> it's getting pretty rowdy. >> a glimpse into life on the mountain. >> there's this crazy arctic windstorm happening.

>> 30-year-old kevin jorgeson of reaching a razor harp hold that had eluded him. he's one of two climbers who has attempted to reach the 3,000-foot summit from the vertical dawn wall. the free climbing, meaning no gear or anything except rope to help them in their decent. the men are relying only on their strength and dexterity. they are two weeks in and they are believed to be the first to do it. >> he started off thinking it was probably impossible, but he might work at it anyway. so it's pretty neat. >> 36-year-old tommy caldwell from colorado is the second climber. his uncle is cheering him on from the ground. he's several segments ahead of jorgeson. he's about 1,000 feet from finishing. >> he's so close to it, we just all want to be here this time to support him. we're extremely proud of him. katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> support crews hope the two men will reach the top by midweek. and here's a note, although they aren't using climbing gear, they are using safety gear to prevent a deadly fall.

lisa, the fog looks so thick out there, but you say it will clear? >> yes, it will clear. the fog advisory has been extended. 10:00 oakland 11:00 in the south bay. the fog is more widespread than the sun and it will take a little while. the sun angle in january pretty low. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. we have the highlighted areas where it is certainly very, very foggy out there. delays at sfo. you see a mile and a half. oakland and bay bridge, you can barely see it. very foggy. and from san carlos and then we go north around the delta and parts of the north bay very foggy, as well. southern california, they have had rockslides, mudslides near bakersfield. the rain has been light further south and extends as far north to this beach, some bris he will.

this will playing much of southern california today. we will have to wait five six days until we see a return to widespread rain in the bay area. pretty neat shot of an inversion in lake tahoe. fog is everywhere from the mountains to the valleys and looking at 40s and 50ths for temperatures. we will hold on to the cloud cover at the coast today. elsewhere, finally some sunshine burning through. but it is a spare-the-air day so it will be hazy and the air quality in the south bay will be poor, as well as the north bay. here's a look at emeryville. it is very dicey out there. pea soup. 46 novato the visibility in the north bay is less than a quarter mile as well. and some sunshine has made it into concord and livermore although reports of fog for you as well. here's a look at san jose. you can't even see it. it's been like this all morning long. by about 11:00 we will see hazy conditions. it will be quiet and with high pressure building in over the next couple days with it somewhat of a stronger easterly

wind may help to mix out the atmosphere just a little bit. we are going to wait until next saturday until we see rain. but it does look promising. sfo, 40 minutes away on arriving flights and the air quality. once again, looking to be just a little bit better into the days ahead. so we are looking at this weak system in southern california. then there's another one behind it. that's going to bring some light snow to the sierra nevada later on today, into tomorrow. and then behind that that's when we get the high building in, bringing breezier winds. there's a look at the state by sected with the rainy weather and foggy weather to the north. we have rain friday across the bay area. sued last right on through sunday. boy, do we need it. by this time next week it will be 21 days since it's rained. high today 59 vallejo. 61 palo alto, 62 san jose. the accuweather seven-day forecast lots of sun shod and then we will see dryer, milder

configuration on the golden gate bridge. right now the span remains closed as it has been all weekend, so workers can install a new median barrier to prevent head-on collisions. here's a live look right now he is golden gate bridge from the marin side. abc7 news reporter nick smith joins us near the golden gate bridge. nick, you have been talking to the experts this morning. what do they have to say? >> carolyn i've been talking to the experts and two take aways for tomorrow. one, there will be a new configuration on the bridge. it will be four lanes headed into the city. they will be using the new median barriers to do that. and the second take away for that pour tomorrow is for people to remember that they need to slow down because all of that new configuration. engineers tell me things are moving exactly how they had planned it. they are planning to move forward with the ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon. my colleague cornell bernard is attending the ceremony right now.

and they are doing that right now. take a look at the video we shot last night. we were here when they put about the last piece in place. the engineers are excited about having completed the project that they believe will be a major step in moving forward. they even took a wick tower to show off their work. a few minutes abc news i spoke with the bridge manager. he said, nick, we cannot wait to have people experience the golden gate bridge. >> the next 12, 14, 18 hours, the construction is done and we are going to be operating this thing several times a day every day for the fore seeable future. so in the next twelve hours or so, what's going to happen is there is going to be some final fine-tuning on the barrier itself. >> okay. you came to check it out with mom, right? >> you guys, i'm going to come back here live because i want you to know one of the things we had the opportunity to do also, carolyn, is speak to people would live in the area and came to check it out. hayden is with his mom. tell me, what do you think is cool about the new median going

the bridge and the traffic reports tomorrow starting at 4:30 a.m.. police all over the nation are cracking down on drivers who abuse disabled parking placards. undercover investigators for the california dmv recently staked out an area in los angeles known for drivers parking illegally. it's near a canyon hiking trail in the hollywood hills. parking near the gate is legal, but only for nearby residents or the disabled. but as you can see many able bodies use it for premiere parking. >> i will ask him why he was using the placard to park here and go hiking. obviously you are not disabled. are you handicapped. you are on a street that requires a permit or handicap. >> authorities say that guy was using a disabled placard registered to an older person. violators could face fines up to $700 and community service if

they are caught. san francisco has become the first city in the nation to formally kickoff a new public awareness campaign against e-cigarettes. the campaign is called "curb it." it is to tell people where they can use e-cigarettes at the curb and to try to discourage teenagers from starting. it's called vaping. exhaling and inhaling vapors of nicotine from a battery-powered device. it has the health department very concerned. >> it contains heavy metals like cigarettes do, it contains carcinogens like cigarettes do and most importantly, it contains nicotine. >> the health department is posting hundreds of billboards like these on muni busses and bart trains to educate the public. former smoker, shauna anderson

said e-cigarettes helped ween her off her camels. >> cigarettes are a toxic waste dump that you put in your body and cigarettes like this is a little less of a toxic waste dump. for me, i don't care. >> last year san francisco supervisors passed an ordinance regulating e-cigarettes, the same as traditional smokes. sponsor eric is especially concerned about the thousands of teenagers lured by the candy-like flavors. >> the e-cigarette companies and big tobacco are trying to use the new frontier of vaporizers and e-cigarettes to hook a new generation and it's the health departments role to protect the public health. >> it should be regulated, but it should be regulated fairly. jeff, the owner of tasty vapor, is also a member of the smoke-free alternative trade association. >> you cannot penalize the large number of adults who have been resigned to smoking out of fear of a couple of kids picking this up.

>> a new exercise program aimed with patients with parkinson's disease is having a positive impact. it's easing some of the symptoms of parkinson's disease with a workout that might surprise you. abc7 news anchor ama daetz has the details. >> most boxers at san francisco polk street gym are training to fight opponents in the ring, but a few are training to fight an opponent in their own body. >> pivoting with your weight and pivoting with your foot. here she is taking a class known as this boxing. it helps patients suffering from parkinson's disease. >> boxing it a forced exercise

and they find it just helps with balance, coordination, gait issues. >> as with many degenerative diseases, the symptoms can vary in severity from patient to patient. veronica said she often experiences tremors in one arm when she's using the other. she believes the rapid-fire hand exchanges and footwork helps her. you know, to injure the brain is probably not good for someone with parkinson's. as you work it, it gets easier to do overtime. i feel like i move better. the poke street gym is the first location in the bay area although the program started three years ago. although there's no data on the program itself, most studies

minutes, san jose has improved from an eighth of a mile to one mile visibility. livermore five miles. but eye right inside the bay from the san carlos airport to hayward and oakland where we have some problems. and up in the north bay very foggy. petaluma napa, santa rosa. but there's sunshine and they will be look at that for the rest of the day today. here's the rain. heavy rain in bakersfield and even in the deltsa around partsville, and palm springs looking at light rain all wait down to san diego. this will impact southern california today. we are in between two systems. san francisco 51. still delays there of 39 minutes. 36 san jose. the delays have been lifted. 54 on the coast. and look at emeryville. 46 in napa. 50 by the delta. and river more and concord in the upper 40s.

so couldn't even see this building about 5 minutes ago. hazy skies on the way today. probably the next hour to two hours maximum. a little bit of morning fog tomorrow and then milder temperatures throughout the week. the next chance of rain comes our way coming together late friday into saturday. sfo, you see the air there not looking good from the north bay. but the forecast for the next couple of days looks a little better. there's a system to the north of us that will dive down behind this exiting suggests earn california system. as it pushes through, it will bring light snow to the mountains but, more importantly high pressure builds in that could bring just enough wind to mix things out a little bit. another look at the rainy conditions in the southland, and for the bay area today, and points in between, look for 50s and 60s. a suggestion of snow -- a dusting of snow today and tomorrow. look at the rain from l.a. through san diego.

position. the nfl divisional playoffs wrap-up today at 10:05 this morning. the cowboys battle the packers at lambeau field. and the colts face the broncos in denver at 1:40 this afternoon. last night the seahawks advanced to the nfc championship game. here's rick quan, he has the highlights had this morning's sports. >> good morning. carolina won just seven games during the regular season, but for three quarters gave the super bowl champs seattle all they could handle. the panthers came out throwing but this cam newton pass will be picked off by former stanford player richard sherman. believe it or not, it's his first career playoff career interception. and russell wilson to baldwin. 7-0, seahawks. carolina was not intimidated. newton with the quick toss to calvin benjamin. he takes the hit, but hangs on for the score. about five minutes left in the half. seattle comes up with the big play.

and jermaine curse, he's gone 63 yards. 14-10 at the break. after a scoreless third quarter, the seahawks finally broke it open. rolled to the tight end luke wilson, made it 24-10. they then put the game away as newton is going to be picked off by kam chancellor. he has nothing but green in front of him. chancellor brings it back 90 yards for the touchdown. so seattle is going back to the nfc championship game for a second straight year. 31-17 was the final. the seahawks will now play either green bay or dallas for the nfc championship. in the afc, the patriots got by baltimore, but to do so they had to be the first team in nfl history to come back twice from 14-point deficits. and new england is so touch to beat. temperatures in the teens yesterday. after blowing an early 14-point lead, the ravens went back up by 14 in the third. he goes in untouched.

after missing four games with a shoulder injury, joe thornton was back in the lineup. dan boyle missed the last six games with san jose. got a nice ovation. and he scores his 14th goal of the year. up 2-0. the rangers were looking to add to their lead, but antti niemi makes an amazing glove save. wow, that was great. in the third period, this goal and cut the lead in half. he tied the franchise rookie record by scoring in his fifth straight game. san jose falls short. rick nash puts in an empty netter. 3-1 was the final. the rangers have won 13 of their last 15. that's sports for sunday morning. i'm rick quan. i'll see you again tonight at 5:00. >> up next, dreaming of riches. the big mega-millions jackpot coming this week.

the bridge engineer said the project is ahead of schedule. they say the final barrier is in place. crews have been going over it with those zipper trucks to adjust the tension on each piece. and the crews have also been driving the new lanes and are expectinged to have a ribbon cutting ceremony later this morning. the bridge is scheduled to reopen at 4:00 in the morning. we still see the fog. >> very foggy across the bay bridge and oakland. san jose, you are getting better. visibility improving. later on today you will see the sun. another spare the air. low 60s for concord. san jose still foggy from santa rosa to napa. upper 50s san francisco. that's the weather seven-day forecast. a little bit of fog tomorrow morning and high temperature builds in for sunny, warmer dryer weather. but we are looking at a system that going to hold together looks like it by late friday and early saturday bringing welcome rain by next weekend. good news. >> much-needed. thank you lisa. thanks force joining us on the
