live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. petition drive by angry taxpayers and county employees leads to a change of heart. contra costa county supervisors are rescinding a big salary increase. >> thanks for joining us. the supervisors veto take ambassador the pay hike they gave themselves comes after a huge public uproar. amy hollyfield is at the county administration building in martinez. has the vote happened yet? >> they passed a motion, kristen to rescind the salary increase and will have a second reading of it next week.

this morning there was plenty of defensiveness and scolding and laughter at one of the supervisors. they voted to give themselves a 33 percent raise which trigger add wave of anger. the supervisors say they have not had a raise since 2007 and they conduct add salary survey before coming up with the figure. the people were so upset they started a petition campaign collecting about 40,000 signatures and convinced the board to come back to the drawing table and rescinded the increase today. they got scolded in public comment but supervisors say they do need a raise. >> today's reconsideration of that ill conceived ordinance is a good step forward, it never should have come to this. if you recall over the three meetings which the ordinance was discussed public opposition was machine and passionate. >> it sounds high but part of

the situation is the supervisors did not take care of this earlier and we need to deal with the reality that everyone needs fair pay. >> the supervisors want a surprise they do not want to vote on this any more and tie it to the superior court judge's salary set bit legislature. they want their salaries to be 70 percent of what the judges are paid. they will consider next steps at the next meeting how much of a raise to give themselves and what amount of time. this was defensiveness. one supervisor said not to call this a raise but a salary "adjustment." some in the crowd laughed so a tense situation that the board needs to resolve and hoping not to deal with that again. >> california attorney general cam that paris the first -- attorney general kamala harris will going to try and replace

crashes. >> the union for san jose firefighters is concerned about the safety of rescuers after a booby trap was found at homeless encampment. over the weekend, crews responded to a first and a firefighters stepped into the football by trap and it was filled sharp sticks. he was not injured. it could have caused a serious injury. the union is asking for it to be more aware headed to calls because there is a new trap never seen before. >> we have new detail on the controversy over closing the tourist attraction coit tower in san francisco. looking at a picture beautiful skies today and the shutdown is because a commercial was shot using a drone. it was supposed to be closed yesterday and today but something changes. nick? good morning, new information. i confirmed with the production company that coit tower will not be closed this afternoon because they expect to wrap up everything they need to do here

january 7 after 600 images and video were found of child pornography on his computer. russell specializes in internal medicine. the receptionist said he abruptly retired last week and investigator say they tracked his excessive downloading activity to his home address where he lives with his wife. his next door neighbors saw the arrest. >> i woke up in the morning and it was a lot of cop on the street and that is not normal. it is quiet. a nation area. >> the district attorney says there is no evidence that the 74-year-old daughter committed crimes again the parents or minors. russell posted $150,000 bail and will be in supreme court march 2nd facing a maximum of five careers in prison. >> french man with linked to one of the "charlie hebdo" attackers appeared in court this morning in bulgaria. authorities arrested the 29-year-old man on january 1 as he tried to cross into turkey.

one warrant credited his links to a terrorist organization and for kidnapping his three-year-old son and smuggling him out of the country. french president hollande paid tribute to three police officers killed last week in the deadly attacks. he said they died so we could live free. back in the states, new york city police officers have a temporary memorial to pay respects to the victims. >> a new way to help find missing children simply by logging on to facebook. our plus investigators zero in on a likely cause of a fatal fire in washington dc, subway stations and what caused the train to fill with smoke. >> the fog was late to lift and a look at the bay from the exploritorium camera and meteorologist mike nicco is coming up

lifeboat and save the passenger the no word on how he ended up in the water in the first place. disney is the parent company of abc7 news. did you notice the fog hanging around never? >> it was there and it was low. what is going on, mike? >> the pattern was interesting where the fog developed in the santa clara valley and the light breeze moved it up the east bay shoreline and it hit a nice light eastern breeze and came across the bay bridge and took over the golden gate bridge and took over the mouth of the east facing valleys and quickly dissipated in the last half hour or so. it did cause flight arrival delays into sfo and those are over. our thickest fog was at the oakland airport where it was a half mime. you can see how rapidly it changes as the visibility is up to ten and everyone look good until you get into the central valley. that will start lifting at the noon hour and it is the central valley that will look at for our fog tonight. we will have a nice light

eastern breeze that will bring fog and the normal areas or the normal way we did it during the winter which is in the east bay valleys and that will spread through the delta and bay into the rest of the neighborhoods tonight. look nor a repeat tomorrow and the south bay you may not be so foggy as this morning. look at the lens they are light and variable and showing us that high pressure is right on top of us and you can see the eastern wind keeping the clouds well offshore and blowing away from the shore right new. san jose and 101 and 880, that was a nice picture but this is 87 and showing, also how clean the air is to the south and walnut creek, you are cloud tree but tomorrow morning expect more fog. here is a look from the exploritorium and a wisp of fog under the bay bridge the case for the next hour as temperatures climb from the 52 at oakland and get more like the 62 in livermore and the 63 in half moon bay. you can see the princess ship is

floating on our bay area fog this morning and we will have mild highs with sunshine this afternoon and fog will return the next couple of nights but mostly sunny and our worse fears, the models are continuing to make the weekend dry. low-to-mid 60's today with the warmest weather over the coast at 64 at half moon bay and you can see the clouds creeping to the coast with light eastern breeze and it will keep them away with the fog developing in the central valley. that moves in, in the morning rush. mid-to-upper 30's inland and low-to-mid 40's around the bay and to 48 in san francisco. dominant area of high pressure has to be, because look at the three swirling masses to our west and this high pressure is going to push to the north so on friday we have rain across the north, saturday rain up in oregon and sunday rain up in oregon and monday, it is over. that was our best chance of rain the next seven days. temperatures are low-to-mid 60's through sunday. upper 50's to low 60's on monday. it looks like it will be a sunny day. be prepared. become to you.

>> thanks california officials reported the first death of flu season last weekend. someone from southern california. california flu season has yet to peak. we are a few weeks behind the east coast so the next few weeks will bring more infection. we spoke with abc7 news chief medical editor and he suggests getting the flu shot if you have not and if you catch the flu? >> why think you should race off to see the doctor. the last thing i want as a doctor for every patient of behind who has the flu to come in because they will spread it to everyone in the waiting room. if you think you have the flu give a call, some doctors will prescribe antiviral medicine over the phone. >> the doctor says if you have had the flu you are not immune in catching it again in the same season because there are different types. if everyone stays home for school or work when they are sick it would help curb the spread of the virus. >> super lazy dog owners.
