52 in oakland. it is 10 degrees warmer hatch moon bay. 54. 50 los gatos, fog and 48 san jose. visibility reduced certainly up in the north bay with the mile and mile and three quarters. san jose also looking at fog. we are looking at a hazy afternoon once again from our sutro tower camera. high pressure allowing for the poor air quality and another spare the air day. upper 50s to low 60s with plenty of cloud cover along the inland valleys. mid-60s around the bay. it's mild out there. getting milder in the days ahead. will we see any rain? i have the answer to that and a look at your temperatures, your dewpoint temperatures for the highs today coming up. chris. >> thank you. we will check in with you in a little bit. an investigation is underway in fremont after police opened fire killing a man they say was carrying a large knife near a neighborhood park. witnesses describe the terrifying moments leading up to the shooting. if all started near lake

arrowhead avenue and the avenue and ended at the park. katie marzullo has more. >> i looked at his face and i thought he looks kind of scary. >> joann lives near harry park in fremont. she thinks she saw the man the police killed and witnessed him fighting with another man. >> he kept saying get away from me, get away from me and he was backing up and the other guy was going forward and the other guy backing up >> the man back away was a young contractor working on an empty house. at one point he called out. the guy said call the police, he has a knife. >> alison did not see a knife. it was someone else who called the police. that caller reported there was a subject walking down the street with a large knife, and he had pulled it out and was advancing toward young -- a young kid. >> three officers arrived and found the man at the park. one officer fired his taser. another fired his gun and the

man, described only as being in his 40's, was killed. >> we do know that the subject had the knife in his hand at the time of the encounter. but as to what exactly happened at that point, it's still to be determined through the investigation. police continue to interview witnesses and they ask anyone who might have surveillance video of the shooting to come forward. >> in fremont, katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> the third shooting in the past three days. richmond police shot a man after they say he pulled a handgun on an officer thursday. the 20-year-old man gonzales is in critical condition. police sad he was arrested for -- before for dealing drugs and possession of a firearm. and in fairfield police shot and killed a 36-year-old man, jose thursday morning after responding to a disturbance call. officers say he charged at them with a knife. 6:303 is our time. protesters marched in san francisco last night to demonstrate against police violence.

[chanting] >> a crowd of more than 100 gather in front. police station in mission. earlier in the evening the crowd chanted "black lives matter" to dining customers. they marched for several blocks, stopping at cafes and restaurants along the way. police looked on, but did not interfere, as the protests remained peaceful. >> it's a crime that left many shocked and disgusted. so much so an entire community came together to help the man -- or the family of a man that was hit by a truck and then robbed by witnesses. 25-year-old greg lowrie was struck while riding his bike tuesday in oakland. abc7 news reporter alan wang, reports on just how much the community really cares. >> oakland police are still looking for the suspects who robbed cyclist greg lowrie. it happened while he was lying on the street unconscious after being hit by a truck on tuesday at the intersection of 8th and union street. another group also robbed the

driver of that truck. >> are you getting any response? >> no. no response. he coughs once in a while. >> his mother said her son is still in critical condition at hyland hospital with brain trauma, broken bones and lacerated organs. >> i think it's my fault. if i hadn't lost my dog and home we would have had a vehicle and he wouldn't have been on street here. >> lowrie and his mother have been living in an rv. he was battling heart problems and was riding to the hospital for treatment when he was truck struck. it's a sad story that compelled a lot of people to reach out and do something. >> and oakland is a great place, there's great people in oakland. >> kyle had no problem mobilizing his neighborhood watch group. >> i put on my facebook page and right away 50 people all -- i'll give him food, you give him money, i'll organize it you

make it happen. >> a gofundme account has been set up to help the family. meanwhile greg's mother said she has seen the very best of humanity and the very worst in just a few short days. in oakland, alan wang, abc7 news. a lucky driver just barely escaped getting hit by a falling eucalyptus tree in the east bay. tree came down around 6:00 last fight on corliss drive inmer august ga. the driver wasn't hurt because the tree fell on back side of the car. the tree, however, did knockout power in the area for more than a couple of hours. part of corliss drive is still blocked off while crews remove the tree. >> three women who played basketball for a community college has been expelled from school after being accused of attacking a roommate. they have been charged with three felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon. the father of one said they were close but his daughter had a falling out with the other women. they went to the park in fairfield monday to settle their differences. and that's where he was hurt.

she had a fracture and a cut that required stitches. >> just like watch me get beat and be a part of it is just a sad thing. >> her car was also damaged. 6:07 is our time. the protests on bart yesterday morning may only be the beginning. in san francisco, protesters banged metal spoons on subway pillars and blocked passengers from getting off trains. there are plans to make it a weekly event every friday. protesters are demanding charges be dropped against a group that chained themselves to trains last november. they say there has to be a better way. >> missings one day of work, that's my cell phone bill that's food in my mouth. they might as welcome to my home and take the food out of my fridge. >> we have plans to have it become a regular thing.

because of the protests, 23,000 few are people took bart yesterday morning compared to a normal friday. some people may have decided to stay home while others may have made alternative plans. east bay ferries and highways leading to the bay bridge were unusually crowded >> marches and rallies are planned throughout this martin luther king, jr. holiday weekend. there's an anti-police brutality march starting at the fruitvale bart station in oakland at 3:00. that's today. tomorrow at 5:00 there's a homeless rally in san francisco at the pow street cable turn around. we will have the details on abc7news.com. drivers crossing the bay bridge and heading into downtown san francisco will probably face some delays this weekend. fremont street will be closed between howard and folson street from a short time. this is for construction work fork the new transbay transit center. 6:08 is the time.

io the issue of same sex marriages is going back to the supreme court. the justices will review cases in four states that are appealing a ban on same sex marriages. this time they seem to be saying it may be time to rule as a nation. here is abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez. >> the supreme court's announcement caught san francisco city attorney by surprise. he paused to ask an aid. once briefed, herrera, who has been at the forefront of the legal battle for marriage equality, has this to say.

>> it is an issue that needs to be settled once and for all. and i'm very confident that it will be. and i do believe it is going to be the end of it. >> the court cases from michigan, ohio, kentucky and tennessee will be consolidated and heard in april. it involves couples who lost their appeals to marry or to have their marriages recognized in those states. today only 14 states ban same sex marriages. chris perry was the plaintiff behind proposition 8, which cleared the way for six sex marriages in california. she spoke to us over the phone from washington, d.c. >> it's a really joyous day to see the possibility that another group will have that opportunity. and i am extremely hopeful that they will rule the right way they will rule in the way of fairness and equality. >> the question before the justices would be do gays and

lesbians have a constitutional right to marry or do states have a right to ban them. experts say the four liberals will vote in favor of same sex marriages. >> together with justice kennedy, who sits in the center of these cases and makes them 5-4. then i think the chief justice john roberts, will actually realize that history is on the side of same-sex marriage. >> bill may welcomes the opportunity to debate the matter once again. >> we are so pleased that the supreme court is going to give the people of california and so many other states their day in court per their right to define marriage between a man and a woman. >> many in san francisco's castro district believe this will be the most significant ruling ever on gay rights. >> it's finally coming to a validation of what we all support, and that's freedom to marry who you love. >> and after the case is argued in april, a decision is expected in late june. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez, abc7 news.

in february, 2004, san francisco began issuing same-sex marriage licenses until an order to stop from the california supreme court. in 2005 the state legislature passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. it was then vetoed by governor arnold schwarzenegger. three years later proposition 8 passed, banning same-sex marriage. in 2010, prop 8 was ruled unconstitutional. the supreme court upheld the decision in 2013, make same-sex marriage legal in california. then yesterday the supreme court agreed to decide the issue for the entire nation. 6:15 the time. the oakland raiders are closer to signing a one-year extension to remain at the coliseum for the 2015 season. the owner, mark davis, said an agreement has been reached and it's awaiting formal approval from the city, county and nfl before the team can officially sign it. the raiders are searching for a long-term solution to their

stadium situation as they look for a home to replace the coliseum. davis said his first choice is getting a stadium in oakland but he has talked to officials in san antonio and is also monitoring the stadium situation in los angeles. >> the free wi-fi for people in underserved communities is going offline. wi-fi 101 is expected to go offline in the coming months due to ages and declining use. it used to have about 8,000 users a month and it's dropped to 2,000. officials say the cost of repairing and replacing equipment that's nearly a decade old is also a factor in the decision to take wi-fi 101 offline. a san jose family is offering a reward for the return of a very sentimental video. someone stole a camera that contained their son's first steps and first words. abc7 news reporter alyssa harrington has more on what happened from san francisco's mission district. >> this one-year-old isn't camera-shy. excited to show off his favorite

sfo. oakland 51 degrees, san carlos 50 and from our roof camera, temperatures range from the low 40s where the fog is the biggest problem by the delta with 48 petaluma, more fog toward napa and santa rosa and mid-50s on the coast. 2.5 visibility half moon bay petaluma petaluma, and a quarter mile by the delta. and toward santa rosa. pretty moist air around the bay with the higher dewpoints. we are starting out milder. in fact, ten degrees warmer than you were this time yesterday in the livermore valley. concord, 3 degrees warmer and 5 degrees warmer at the coast, novato and napa. even though we are underneath this ridge, we certainly have a moist atmosphere and hazy conditions. with the ridge in lays, it's trapping the pollutants closer to the surface. so in the north bay, also the coast and the central looking at poor air quality. others parcel of air moves

overhead into next week. it's not what we are hoping for in terms of the cold front but it still should bring us better air quality into tuesday and wednesday. so look for temperatures to continue to stay mild throughout the next several days. a spare the air outlook at just been out of control here for january. it's been hazy. i don't need to tell you that. it anti even looked like the bay area. and it lacks like another gray day on tap for today with a also more sunshine in the south bay. the exploratorium camera the forecast highlights, foggy and drizzly in spots to start the weekend. we will look for the spare the air again today and a kansas of showers into the north bay. a better kansas tomorrow. so we could see some sprinkles this morning but that cold front, another one heads our way tomorrow. and with this weak ridge in place right now, not a whole lot going on. but it is a system we are watching for perhaps maybe a little bit of rainfall. so in terms of our rainfall

>> new details. the number of confirmed cases of measles in orange county has risen to 16, prompting health officials to predict that the outbreak will continue to spread. according to "the l.a. times," ten of the cases are related to visits to disney theme parks last month in anaheim where more than 30 people were infected.

>> good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. we will take a look at the forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, we are waking up to hazy conditions across the bay area? >> yes. hi everyone. despite the conditions, you see a little bit here from our sutro tower camera. we do have a haze over the city and airport delays of 42 minutes at sfo and 52 downtown. oakland, 51 and 50 morgan hill. you are probably feeling the temperatures not quite as chilly. 40s and 50s are the dewpoints but the fog is a problem from the delta all the way down to san jose. better visibility here but still

fog in the area from mountain view to san jose. three quarter mile in santa rosa. look emeryville with the cloudy skies, maybe sprinkles out there in the afternoon. a per chance of rain for the second half of the weekend. notice the number of 60s and on the mild side. we will talk about the likelihood of the rain and the extended outlook coming up. chris. >> thank you 6:31 is our time. we have new information on the terrible shooting eight days ago in san francisco's western addition. four people were shot execution style while they sat in their car. their killers are still at large, but abc7 news learned police have made an important discovery. here's reporter vic lee. >> reporter: the car was rented from the hertz office here on main street in walnut creek friday night before the massacre. the four victims, three identified members of a gang were shot at close range in

their parked stolen car on laguna and page street. police say that their executioners likely used four guns and took off before police arrived. sources tell us the suspect's car was returned to hertz early this week. san francisco police later took possession of it. they asked hertz to call them if the person who rented the car came back. on wednesday morning a possible sighting of some of the suspects resulted in the search of a neighborhood in walnut creek. two men and a women came to the hertz office asking for another rental. an employ' notified san francisco police that he thought one of them was the person they were looking for. at the request of san francisco, walnut creek police, using k9s responded while homicide officials were on their way. one fled on foot as officers arrived, lead to go the search of the area. two nearby schools were locked down. police found him hiding in a garbage bin near contra costa school.

they later released the two men and the female companion. the official reason for the release is it was a case of mistaken identity. but sources say there may be more to it. we learned investigators have developed names of people they are looking for. they believe there were four gunmen and they were most likely members of a rival group. police declined comment because the case is still under investigation. vic lee, abc7 news. happening today, there will be a memorial service to remember the victims of violence throughout the bay area. the archdiocese of san francisco will conduct an interface memorial service and prayer walk for victims and their families. it gets underway at 10:00 at saint anthony's catholic search. it will be followed by an interfaith memorial church at mission dolores church at noon. there will be a community meeting today over the police department's proposal to use unmanned drones. critics have voiced privacy concerns but police say the drone would be used in emergency

situations such as active shooters and hostage scenarios. today's meeting is the latest discussions to get feedback over the drones' use. it gets underway at 1:00 at the san jose public library. new this morning, after several weeks of work, bay bridge crews are finishing up repairs on the western span. last night crews continued work to replace concrete damaged by expansion joints that deteriorated. expansion joints allow the bridge to expand and contract with temperatures and movement. repairs began in november after cracks were discovered in the upper deck. joints are state of the art units made of silicon. they are expected to hold up for decades. what this will do with the new expansion joints in there, this will make it we don't have emergency closer for a good, long time. late last year, early last year we had an emergency closer right around here of this upper deck. the concrete had cracked badly. and there was actually a hole

there. >> the original expansion joints were installed nearly 80 years ago. 6:35 is our time. it's been a tribute to the late martin luther king, jr. for decades, the annual freedom train from san jose to san francisco but the tradition will come to an end this holiday weekend. >> for more than 30 years it's been the local journey connected with dr. king. but come monday, the freedom train will run its final course. >> there's so much history. we need to pass it on. we don't want to lose it. we want to promote the african-american history. and culture. >> for him of the african-american heritage house and history park, a personal connection. he was on the first train ride back in 1984. >> people of all different walks of life with this energy. >> the caltrain called freedom train is the last officials

commemorative train service in the united states. it honors the a 4-mile march from selma to montgomery alabama, led by dr. king that proved instrumental in the passage of the 1965 voting rights act. dr. clay carson is from stanford university. from the king research and education institute. >> the thought of what is the status of human rights and civil rights and social justice issues today? because i think what king was talking about 50 years ago is still relevant today. >> the upcoming trip from san jose on the station up to san francisco will be the last one putt on by the mlk junior association of santa claraa&ek"x+alley. organizers cite a lack of community interest and decline in ridership the last decade for the main reason for the decision. some riders say the train has served its purpose. >> a person who doesn't come out to celebrate martin luther king probably doesn't know about him. they aren't aware of what he's done to make this country the great country that it is today.

>> the freedom train departs from san jose station to san francisco on monday at 9:45 a.m. in the morning. free admission to muer woods monday. sounds like a dream come true for nature lovers but it could be a nightmare because of traffic. according to our partner, the marin journal. part of highway 1 remains closed after it was washed away after the heavy storms last month. that means travelers will be forced on to upon rammic highway, which could cause backups. there's free admission monday at national parks across the country, including at the muir woods national monument for the mlk holiday. still ahead on the saturday morning news, the end is near for candlestick park. find out why a major developer though, has changed its plan for blowing the space up.

stadium? >> i think there was a lot of community pressure, and if they want to have friends in the neighborhood, they have to be friends in the neighborhood. >> lenar has a per mit to go ahead with the mechanical demolition as soon as they remove all the asbestos and lead paint. but they will have to constantly spray the area with water to keep the dust from spreading. >> the dust can be controlled but we still need to be here making sure that that dust is controlled. >> and they will be. the neighborhood association has been talking about mounting a camera on one of these rooftops. in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. hot and getting hotter. n.a.s.a. scientists say 2014 was the hottest year on record. ocean and land temperatures are the warmest they have been since 1880. most scientists say global warming is caused by us. we are creating higher levels greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide and that gets trapped in the atmosphere and warms the planet. nine of the ten hottest years have happened since the year 2000.

n.a.s.a. said global warming is a big reason for the california drought. in just the last 15 years the average temperature has become 1.25 degrees warmer than the 20th century average. and speaking of the drought, we bring in meteorologist lisa argen. mother nature is not going to be helping us in putting a dent in that drought in the upcoming week? >> not at all. the temperatures for december are about average but it's been so dismal for january. we are looking at no rain for possibly the entire month. and that along with the spare the air days has really aloud january to stand out in terms of more unusual weather here. so the wind flow, and yesterday a few sprinkles in the north bay. lou abc news the live doppler 7hd you notice there is moisture up to the north and also some dense fog in the san joaquin valley. we are sitting in between. we have a ridge of high pressure, a weak one overhead. here's the view from mt. tam.

you see the cloudiness out there. and we are looking at bad air once again in the north bay in particular. 352 with airport delays of 42 minutes. san francisco. 50 san carlos. good morning morgan hill. and half moon bay. this is the way it looks this early morning. the sun coming up at about 7:24. 50 in santa rosa and fog from santa rosa napa, petaluma and we are looking at pretty good visibility toward livermore at 352 degrees. pretty mild out there. 10-mile visibility for friends in livermore. look at the coast. 2.5 miles here. .75 up in santa rosa. it's gotten a little better through napa and the delta but it will be variable throughout the next several hours with the low sun angle, a lot of haze in the atmosphere. and looking at mild temperatures this morning. hayward and mountain view, 4 degrees warmer. fog around mountain view as well. again, it's been so dry out

there and so hazy, it's been more reminiscent of southern california. but as we go through tomorrow we are looking at the possibility of more bad air. but we are looking at better air quality into the middle of next week. even though it is another ridge of high pressure that will build in for the week ahead. our exploratoriumium camera foggy and drizzly to start out but otherwise hazy conditions today and a better chance of showers comes your way in the north bay tomorrow as a weak cold front pushes on through. yesterday we had one system with some sprinkles, gray skies. right now a bits of a ridge rebuilding but north of i-80 you could see some sprinkles up by mount shasta, some showers. and then tomorrow this system will get a little closer bringing us the possibility, hopefully, of maybe some measurable rain. but overall the month has been looking unbelievably dry. this is the second wettest month for san francisco in the rainy season.

in 2013 we had about a half-inch of rain for january. 2014.06, and now looking at nothing for 2015. highs today well into the 70s for southern california. 60s on the coast. pretty mild out there with low 50s. a lot of folks are headed up to the sierra nevada for martin luther king holiday and no real worries in terms of travel conditions. you might see a little bit of wintry mix precipitation through tomorrow. 60 today in concord with 64 in san jose. maybe a stray shower up toward clear lake and cloverdale. accuweather seven-day forecast spare the air today. hazy out there. chance of showers better in the north bay tomorrow. martin luther king day looking nice. and by friday we could see some record warmth around here and in southern california. once again, in the news for our drought, our no rain, our spare the air, and in this unbelievable january. >> the sierra snowpack is

affected as well. >> yeah, not too good. >> thank you. turning to sports the there is a new coordinator. he could be considering a couple surprising options, including former raiders head coach lane tippen and mike shanahan who held the same position 20 years ago. yesterday the raiders introduced their new coach. here's larry beil with this morning's sports report. >> good morning, everybody. the raiders may have made their best move in years hiring jack del rio to take over at their new head coach. the owner mark davis needed to find somebody who understands the raiders culture. del rio grew up in hayward going to raiders games as a kid, so check there. he needed experience. del rio spent nine years as the head coach in jacksonville. check there. and he also needed somebody who could instill toughness. del rio played linebacker in the nfl for 11 years.

he was rugged and understands you need mental and physical toughness to win in the nfl. so another check there. and at his introductory news conference, del rio called this opportunity a dream job. >> this is an organization that has been an excellent organization for a number of years. it's fallen on some hard times recently. but the foundation is in place for us to be great again. >> i told jack that i think i'm going to move a different direction and i'm thinking of going more offensive as the head coach because we have a young quarterback and jack said, whoa, whoa, stop. i know about offense, as well. and when we met and he dissected the raiders roster and was able to tell me about each offensive player, that showed me he's ready to be here. take that part of the anxiety out of me about going with another defensive coach. >> the raiders have reason to feel good about their situation going forward. on to the warriors and the coach steve kerr took a page from the gregg popovich play by
